How to Make Your Characters Sound Real

What makes a character in a novel memorable? The author’s description of the character, the character’s actions, or the character’s voice? Probably all three. Interesting and compelling conversation between the characters in the novel keeps you engaged and makes you want to read the entire novel. The uniqueness of the character’s voice makes the character come to life. Take for instance, a character from the Deep South. To make the character ring true, it is probably a good idea to give the character a southern accent. The same applies to a character of British descent. Speaking as the British do would make the character more real. To make a character believable, the character’s voice has to be believable.

Interesting dialogue can break up boring, lengthy narration and move the story along. By using compelling dialogue, your story isn’t just static. It is lively, animated, and energetic. Engaging dialogue keeps the reader turning the pages of the novel, instead of putting the novel down, never to pick it up again.

As you begin to develop the characters in your novel, try these simple techniques for writing believable and realistic dialogue.

Pay Attention to Everyone Around You

Listen to everyone around you. Go to your favorite restaurant, to the Laundromat, or to the mall, and just listen. Take notice of how different people talk and jot down anything interesting. Don’t be obvious with your eavesdropping. You don’t want people to think you are listening to their conversation per se, but you do want to find out how people express themselves and how they dialogue with one another. Listen to the various accents of the people. People from all parts of the country are living in close proximity to one another, making for distinct dialects and interesting speech patterns. If you are trying to make your character sound like a true northerner, zero in on a person with those particular speech patterns, and try to mimic how the person talks. Your character from the north will come across more believable if the dialogue is authentic to the region he or she resides.

Watch Your Favorite Television Program

Television programs are another way to examine the ways people from different regions speak. Listen to the inflections in the people’s voices and try to write their speech the way it sounds, not necessarily the way it would be spelled. A good example of a television station to listen to would be the BBC Channel. Watch your favorite British comedy and try to make your character’s voice match the television character’s voice.

Read Your Favorite Novel

Read some of your favorite novels and pay close attention to the dialogue used in the novels. How is the dialogue structured? How does the author make the character sound believable? Rewrite the dialogue for a character in one or more of the novels and see if you can make the character sound like he or she is from another region of the county. Does your attempt at the rewriting the dialogue sound more believable? More realistic? More authentic? If so, you are definitely on the right track to making your characters come alive.

Develop the Character’s Voice

Now taking stock of all the notes you’ve made, begin to develop your character’s voice and see how well you can make your character’s speech distinct. You don’t want static characters. You want characters that come alive and keep the reader engaged. Good dialogue keeps the readers wanting to find out what happens next, and believable dialogue gives your character authenticity.

Writing realistic dialogue is not an easy task, but keep at it. Making your character’s voice believable will make your novel stronger and will keep your readers begging for more.

Importance of Character in Sports Performance

I do not think there is a Viagra pill that can suddenly rid sports of all its ills and infuse such spirits that would catapult sportsperson to ultimate glory. Such short-term measures may show instant results momentarily, but not repeatedly. They will not make a champion out of you. There are no quick-fix solutions.

I am looking at a holistic view of improving sporting activity, nurturing the talent available, assisting them in achieving excellence in their discipline and also preparing them for a productive life after their “sporting life” is over. In the process of creating excellent sportsperson, I also have a dream of molding their character and personalities which would not only stand them in good stead during an active sporting carrier but throughout life. There is an incredible talent that we can ill-afford to ignore.

I have a vision that someone should take under their wings, without disturbing the existing structure of “training”, all young potential sportsperson in the age group of 8 years to 14 years and 15 years to 21/25 years, for imparting soft skills and emotional literacy. The literacy should be provided continuously as a ‘course’ during their sporting-skill training at Centers. Subject-specific workshops must also be conducted at regular intervals. The idea is to in-grain these skills into their psyche that they automatically begin to ‘live’ these skills. The sports fields should be their ‘classrooms’ where they learn to be soft-skill-and-emotionally literate sportsperson.

It is widely accepted that sports and games provide lessons for soft skill and personality/character development. In fact, games and sports serve as a resource to teach soft skills in management and other educational institutions. When a sportsperson participates in competitive games and sports, he tends to unconsciously learn and develop his soft skills. By the time he is proficient in these skills his active sporting life is over. He gets no opportunity to use these skills to contribute to excellence in his chosen sports discipline. It is too late. I recommend some ‘reverse engineering’ merely by changing the timing of his exposure. Whilst developing sporting skills, the sportsperson should be imparted soft skills and emotional literacy side-by-side. When he graduates into a team of some ‘level’, it must be with all these skills in place. Thereafter, he has ample opportunity to contribute to individual or team excellence as the case may be. And of course, his skills are not only used to achieve excellence, but also fine-tuned and improved upon with live experience.

I have tentatively identified important defining skills for sportsperson involved with:-

Team sports

– Reliability

– Constructive Communication

– Active Listening

– Active Participation

– Sharing Openly and Willingly

– Cooperation and Helpfulness

– Flexibility

– Commitment

– Problem solving

– Respectful and Supportive

Individual Sports

– Goal Setting

– Decision-Making

– Communication

– Conflict Management

– Time Management

– Execution

Emotional Intelligence/Literacy (both team and individual)

– Emotional Self Awareness

– Accurate Self Assessment

– Self Confidence

– Emotional Self Control

– Empathy

– Influencing Others

The final set of skills to be imparted will be decided consequent to a Detailed Needs Analysis and after necessary interaction with the athletes and coaching/support staff.

Most people involved in sport agree that proper behavior makes the sport better and that character matters. While there is a great amount of attention paid today to ideals of sportsmanship, or positive relational character – respecting self, teammates, opponents, and the game – little consideration is paid to the influence that an athlete’s or coach’s character actually has on performance. Besides the evolution of “sportsmanship” programs which are intended to heighten awareness about the realities of sport today – the relationship between character and performance is seldom addressed. Despite the logical link between character and performance, many coaches dismiss this as an intangible factor that is immeasurable!

Performance and relational character are not mutually exclusive. ‘Performance character’ focuses on the diligence, perseverance, and self-discipline necessary to a commitment to academic, athletic, and other areas of excellence. ‘Moral or relational character’ embodies the traits of integrity, justice, caring, and respect – needed for successful interpersonal relationships and ethical behavior.

Character strengths such as hope, perseverance, creativity, and zest are but a few traits which, when habituated, provide sport participants the greatest opportunity to improve performance and enjoyment. Hope is about goal-setting and optimism, creativity is about finding alternative strategies to improve performance, and zest is about the enthusiasm that players and coaches bring to the field.

An athlete who has developed a strong character can call on a foundation of well-formed habits in aspiring to true excellence. The competition of the sports arena, together with a personal goal to optimize performance, challenges the athlete to continually stretch his or her abilities through deliberate practice, a focused and effort-full rehearsal. We must ‘will’ good habits and improved skills; we cannot just ‘wish’ them to happen. What separates successful performers from others is the ability to make the most of what they can control in their aspirations for optimal performance. This does not mean that anyone can become an elite athlete, but it does mean that athletes can strive to perform to the best of their ability levels – aspiring to excellence as individuals and as members of a team.

deformed attitude and character, your choice should not be different if you most succeed

fulfillingly!

Introduction to Character Rigging – How to Prepare Your 3D Models For Animation!

Give your character a healthy foundation for his life. This Article covers the basic ideas of adding a rig to your model. The underlying bone structure enables you to animate a 3D figure.

Start with drawing

As with any step in 3D, begin with planning your rig in 2D. Sketch out the skeleton on a piece of paper and try to determine where to place the joints. Look at yourself or find some pictures of a skeleton on the internet. For any character, especially for cartoon figures, sketch the most extreme poses he needs to make during animation. This will give you a solid understanding of the joint placement. It is important to know that poses oftentimes might look too extreme in a still frame, but work great in the animation.

Add bones

Now go into your 3D program. Use the drawings as a guide to put bones into your character. This step requires some testing to find the right position. For example if you put the shoulder joint in the wrong place, you won’t be able to rest the arm against the body. If it is too close to the neck, the arm will disappear into the body when rotating downwards. If you put it too far away, there will be a gap between arm and body.

IK or FK?

There are two ways of animating a rig. Let’s say you want to animate your arm. In forward kinematics mode you rotate the upper arm bone, then the lower arm bone and then the hand to achieve a certain pose. With inverse kinematics, you may grab the characters hand, move it around and the whole arm will follow.

Both IK and FK have their strengths and weaknesses, so you want to be able to switch between them. IK is a great time saver, because you need to animate fewer controls. It also allows you to plant the hand firmly on the table while the rest of the body is moving. A downfall of IK is that a circular motion – such as an arm swing in a walk cycle – is hard to create. With FK you only need to rotate the shoulder joint back and forth and voila, the arm is moving in an arc!

After making bones and creating IK and FK controls, it is time to assign the rig to your 3D model.

What is weight painting?

Each point in the geometry of your 3D model may be assigned to one or more bones. By painting the weights of a point, you can specify to what extent it follows different bones. This way you may control the sharpness of the bend between two or more bones. For the bending or twisting motion of the back or neck, you might have to paint a very soft gradient, so that one point follows up to three or four bones. When painting the weights for an elbow, you want to have a very sharp bend, so a point at the crease might be assigned ninety percent to the lower arm and just ten percent to the upper arm.

Create facial expressions

This is a fun process, because you get to do some modeling again. Sketch a couple of drawings or take photographs as a reference for your characters facial expressions.

In 3D add a shape key to your characters head. Then modify the face until you are satisfied with the expression. Your can now morph between the blendshapes with a slider for each target.

Additional Thoughts

I don’t care what people say about rigging, never place restrictions on the animation controls! During animation you will be doing things with your character that are anatomically impossible, just to make it look anatomically correct in a certain camera angle and lighting situation.

Same with movement automation: don’t use it! People tend to put things like an automated foot roll or automated shoulder movement into their rigs. The latter example automatically raises the shoulder when you raise the arm. In the end this kind of stuff is a pain in the ass for the animator, because it is nothing else than a restriction. Some might argue that automation is great, if you can turn it off at times. I say, for a small production it is not worth the effort, you are faster and more precise by hand.

NCIS Character Analysis – Agent Tony DiNozzo

The senior field agent of the NCIS team is Anthony DiNozzo. He has a humorous and laid-back style, that amuses all of the other team members, and himself. It is nearly impossible to find a topic that Tony will not make into a comedy, or movie reference. Although he is all laughs on the outside, he is a stone cold agent on the inside. He is intelligent, courageous, and difficult to trick. DiNozzo is fitting as the senior field agent, because of his ability to lighten the mood with humor, and his incredible leadership skills.

Tony loves making fun of McGee; it has become a necessity for him! From Agent DiNozzo, we learned great words like ‘McGeeky’,’McCranky’, ‘McGoo’, ‘McFlabby’, and many other golden nicknames for Agent McGee. Tony is a huge film buff, apparently spending most of his free time watching movies. He loves talking like his favorite characters, and making situational references to his favorite movies. This is vintage DiNozzo, and possibly his most admirable quality.

When it comes to serious matters, Tony is all business. He is not afraid of violence, and could use it when necessary. Like Gibbs, Tony does not show his fear. Instead, he uses is to enhance his overall ability as an agent. He is extremely protective of his fellow team members, as seen by his fear for Ziva in Season 6. When he suspects a relationship between Ziva and Rivkin, he confronts Rivkin multiple times, warning him to stay away from Ziva. When he does not heed Tony’s warning, Tony comes to arrest him, and a brawl ensues. This is all because Dinozzo was afraid of something bad happening to Ziva. Agent DiNozzo sure is a talker, but when it comes down to business, he lets his actions speak.

Tony, however, does have a problem. He does not know how to have a proper relationship with women, and it sometimes can be seen in the way he works. Moving from one girl to the next may be fun, but DiNozzo soon realizes that he is looking for something more in his life. He is looking for stability. When he finally finds someone, it is under the wrongest of circumstances, and the relationship does not work out. Tony’s problem remains in his psychology to this day, and it is adding an unwanted element to the way he works. He is sometimes heavily distracted by women in his interviews, and Gibbs sends someone else to do it.

Agent Anthony DiNozzo has many admirable qualities; like strength, courage, humor, and ability to incorporate all 3 at the same time. This combination of traits makes for an excellent senior field agent, or a team leader. He can be either one, depending on the situation. Tony does have relationship issues, that affect him on a deeper internal level. Overall, he is one of the most entertaining characters on the show, and he has the most traits in common with Gibbs. Who says you can’t pull pranks as a Federal Agent?

Now that we know who he is, let’s answer a basic questionnaire about what Agent Dinozzo would do in certain situations:

Q1. Your best friend has just lost a loved one, how do you handle it?

A. Tony DiNozzo is not as strong as Ziva, in the sense of feeling emotion after the loss of a loved one. He feels wrecked after the loss of Agent Todd, and Director Shepard. Tony knows how difficult it is for his best friend, so he would be there to help his friend get through.

Q2. You just won $1,000,000 from a lottery ticket that you bought. How do you react?

A. Of course Tony would parade around the entire NCIS building, bragging about his lottery win, exactly what he is going to do with the money, and taunt McGee and Ziva. What would he do with the money? Tony would buy his dream car.

Q3. Your best friend has just achieved his or her dream goal. How do you show your support?

A. Tony is type of person who feels happy for his friends accomplishments, but may be the jealous type. He would probably congratulate his friend on the phone, and make a remark about how he would be able to do the same thing. DiNozzo has cockiness, and self-confidence. His large ego would have something to say.

Q4. On your deathbed, how well did you live your life? Is there anything you would have done differently, given a second chance?

A. DiNozzo would probably regret not watching every single movie ever made! Not really, but what Tony would really regret, is his inability to find stability in his relationships. Assuming that he dies a single man, he would have wished to be able to have a life partner. For someone to share the experience of life with, and possibly have children. DiNozzo is not one to regret many things, but his love life would probably be one of them.

8 Key Character Traits That Make a Great Leader

There are certain character traits found in all good leaders and we have listed 8 key ones below.

Some great leaders are born and it is their destiny to lead. On the other hand, there are other great leaders who made the time and effort to become one and you can to.

If you think you’re not quite the finished article as a leader, then this article is for you.

Here the 8 character traits that all great leaders possess.

1. Trust & Respect

If you lead you don’t need to be liked on a personal level (although most good leaders are)

You simply need to have the characteristics that make you trusted and respected in the leadership role that have assumed.

There is a key difference between generating respect and trust and being liked personally.

People don’t have to like you to trust and respect you.

Many people who know nothing about leadership try to hard to be liked on a personal level and this leads to ineffective leadership as their goal of being liked interferes and weakens their role as leader.

2. Communication

Leading on from the above you need to be able to communicate with your team and treat them with respect, encourage and be firm when needed.

A good leader tries to get the best out of their team by being understanding them, inspiring them and rewarding effort. A good leader never rules by fear.

A good leader however needs to firm and stop anyone from upsetting the team reaching its ultimate goal and take swift decisive action when it does.

3. Enthusiastic

Good leaders always have the character trait of enthusiasm about getting the job done.

People will respect a person who shows hard work, passion and dedication.

Leaders are there to motivate and inspire and people will respond to these character traits.

Although the roles of a leader may be different, the leader is the leader of the team and the team will only get behind someone they see as “one of them” and able to muck in with the them.

4. Confidence.

If you are not confident you wont get anywhere as a leader.

Rock solid confidence in your ability is a must to inspire dedication, trust and hard work from your team.

Confidence should not be confused with arrogance.

Arrogance shows a non team player and will cause resentment.

Most great leaders have a combination of confidence and humility.

5. A Cool Head

When things are going wrong you look for a leader to take control of the situation.

They need to show confidence, but do so in a cool, calm collected manner with the aim to putting things right or getting the job done.

No matter what the situation a good leader never loses his cool and this is critical to maintaining team confidence when the chips are down.

6. Focus on Key Elements

A good leader thinks analytically and can view the overall goal or aim, but also break down the sub elements of what needs to be done to reach the goal.

They organize, prioritize and workout the smaller parts into a logical pattern to reach the ultimate goal in the best possible manner.

7. Motivation & Innovation

A good leader is always looking to improve and to innovate to get better results even when things are going well a true leader is looking to take himself and his team to the next level.

8. Improve Their Skills

Leading on from the above, a good leader will know they are not perfect (no one is) and they will be constantly trying to improve their skills and look at their past results no matter how good they were and see how they could have done better.

The above character traits are ones that all great leaders have and you can to if you dedicate yourself to becoming a leader – You never know you may even become a great one.

Scooby Doo – Which Character Had the Best Catch Phrase?

Scooby Doo has been around for decades and during that time we’ve all gotten a chance to get to know the characters and their most commonly spoken phrases. But of all the Scooby Doo characters, who had the best catch phrase? Here they are in order from lamest to best, and the reasons why they ranked where they did.

6. Jeepers! – Daphne

Seriously? That’s all you have to say Daphne? Her character was usually portrayed as the most vulnerable, often being captured or finding herself in some kind of trouble. In keeping with the fact that her character contributed very little to the solving of mysteries, her catch phrase contributed nearly nothing to any conversation.

5. Let’s split up, gang… – Fred

Well, if nothing else the guy had a plan. Divide and conquer right? True, he used this plan over and over and it usually resulted in one or more of the gang being captured. But it is definitely more interesting than “jeepers!” and was at least an attempt to try and accomplish something.

4. My glasses! – Velma

Poor Velma. The poor girl was constantly finding her glasses knocked off her face, leaving her groping in the dark in a desperate attempt to try to find them. Of course, this usually happened at the worst possible moment. But the super smart Velma always had much more to contribute than the bumbling Fred and Daphne, so even when finding herself suddenly blind, she was more interesting than those two.

3. Scooby Doo where are you? – Shaggy

Somehow Shaggy and Scooby, the two characters least interested in solving scary mysteries, ended up in the thick of things constantly. And when the villains were closing in, it was inevitable that those two would end up losing each other. “Scooby Doo where are you?” usually was met with a shaky response from a scared Scooby, “over here!” This memorable catch phrase evokes vivid images of a very frightened Shaggy and Scooby.

2. I would have gotten away with it too, it if wasn’t for you meddling kids. – Villain

This phrase is not attributed to one character in particular, but was often used and is often quoted. It has become part of pop culture as a great catch phrase in general, not just amongst Scooby Doo fans. Most likely, you would hear this utterance just as the mask that the villain had been wearing had been removed to reveal who the real culprit was.

1. Scooby Dooby-Doo! – Scooby Doo

Yes, the star character had the best catch phrase, which is only fitting. Scooby was a loyal friend, even if he was a bit of a chicken. At the end of the day he could always be counted on to call out “Scooby Dooby-Doo!” to mark the end of a mystery successfully solved.

Writing Strategy: Dealing With Character Bullies in Your Writing

Stories are just reflections of real world– either of the writers’, or of the readers’.

Yes, we have myriad sob stories of bullying around. Even our family members could bully us, workmates, or even between/among nations, and so on bullying is present and wrecking havoc to psyche, economy, peace. This kind of beastly behavior known as “just power tripping over someone or group” is kinda manifestation of being insecure, jealous or envious, or purely a behavior of maladjusted individual, or a nation who knows nothing about respect, empathy, humanity and so on. And, bullies have same profile: they are not contented with their own skin. They are always looking for other people who could be their victim, and in the process, making them feel good about themselves. Pathetic.

As an author, don’t have any problem with character bully. Yes, have met several of them: from silent types to audicious ones.

“I am just joking.” This lame excuse or alibi from a bully is too familiar to me. Many could relate over this, and who, in his sane mind, would be doing such a thing? A narcissist!

Narcissist is a bully to the core. Sans remorse, nothing can stop this person from doing such, especially if bullying is being done in a subtle manner.

Fleshing out a character bully is liken to literally skinning a real bully alive and putting such as a covering to a fictional characters’ body, and viola, a bully personified, in different dimension, even in an imaginary world. You may now add unique actuations, habits, and the works — so as to be convincing and relatable.

Liken to the making of Frankenstein where head sewn to torso, gotten from different cadaver forming a stitched body, a physical vessel of moving zombie — a monster!

Effective character delineation is making readers feel the tension every time protagonist and character bully meet till the climactic phase where such character bully succumbs to defeat, or realizes something right or good — at the end!

Yes, bullies die and their bullying stops with their death, unless they reincarnate under new skin, or had passed bullying virus to their children down the road. Oh my, generational bullies be like!

In my novella, evil giants exist in Imacus Island, where secrets are being revealed: bullying after bullying till Lily, the protagonist, has put an end to it. But, is it not bullying addicting, and such behavior might be present in all of us? Yes, in different ways and degrees though.

Three-Dimensional Villains – Finding Your Character’s Shadow

If you’ve ever had to get up in front of a group of strangers and speak, you’re familiar with the fear that you’re going to embarrass yourself while all eyes are on you. Worse, all that attention seems to magnify your every quirk, and your flubs can feel like they overshadow what you get right.Even when we’re not on stage, stress makes us flounder. It’s easy to live our lives according to our values and beliefs when everything is going right; it’s a lot harder when we’re under pressure and in the spotlight.

Carl Jung named the face we present to the world, the public façade we use to hide things we don’t like about ourselves the persona. The flipside of the persona is the shadow, which is like a three-dimensional version of our physical shadows, packed full of things we’re trying to hide, sometimes even from ourselves.

To become whole, each of us needs to individuate, or integrate, all of our archetypal parts into a cohesive whole. That includes the persona and the shadow.

In any story, the mark of a good villain is his ability to force your hero into the proverbial spotlight, where he will find ways to magnify and criticize the things your hero would most like to hide.

The Dark and Light Sides of the Shadow

Psychologist Carl Jung believed that in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness–or perhaps because of this–the shadow is the seat of creativity.

Author Ralph Keyes argues that most people never publish because they’re not willing to find and face their shadows. Rather than acknowledge our fears about what we might find inside ourselves, we project the anxiety onto others and obsess about what they will think. Good writers push past the fear, Keyes says, in spite of the repercussions: “One reason so many good writers have such tattered personal lives is that they write as if they have no one to protect. Lucky for readers, not so lucky for writers.”

Recognizing Your Own Shadow

Since the shadow is, by definition, upsetting to acknowledge, we shove our awareness of it down into the unconscious. That means that the only way to truly know what’s in your shadow is to think about the things that infuriate you, disgust you, and horrify you more than anything else. If cruelty just makes you sick, Jung would say that cruelty is in your shadow.

Does that secretly mean you’re a cruel person? No, but it does mean you’ll have an awfully hard time accepting that you really are capable of the kind of cruelty that makes you so sick. (And before you insist you aren’t, read a bit about Phillip Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment.) Many, many people are riveted by true crime and serial killer stories because they give us a way to indulge the shadow without actually acknowledging that the shadow is part of us.

If you’re reacting to the last two paragraphs with skepticism or irritation, you’ve found the feeling that means you’ve touched your shadow. If you can’t face it, Betsy Lerner says, “you[‘ll] think you can’t write, but the truth is you can’t tell. Writing is nothing if not breaking the silence.”

And remember: writing about it is not the same as doing it.

Finding Your Characters’ Shadows

Good characters have shadows, just like you do, and your characters’ shadows should repel them as much as yours does you. What that means is that channeling your own shadow through your characters will help you create the kinds of villains that have made writers famous. If Stephen King had hidden from his shadow, The Shining would never have been written. The same goes for lots of other famous stories. Dante’s Inferno. Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. The Exorcist. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Frankenstein. Dracula.

Exercise: Find Your Hero’s Shadow (and Your Villain)

Worksheets to help you do the exercises can be found at Archetype Fiction Articles

Directions

For each part, work as quickly as you can. Try not to think too much about the answers; your unconscious does better work when you’re not wondering if you’re doing the exercise right or criticizing the answers you come up with. You can write as many answers as you like for each part, since there is no right or wrong number. You’ll probably find, though, that coming up with at least five will help you get more out of the exercise.

PART 1. List the qualities and values that make your hero a hero.

Examples: Is he brave? Is she selfless? Does he speak his mind even when it will get him in trouble? Does she stand up for those who have no voices of their own?

* If you have trouble coming up with words for characteristics, try Sandy Tritt’s Personality Components chart (scroll about halfway down the page) at http://users.wirefire.com/tritt/tip8.html

PART 2. List the qualities and values that make your villain a villain.

* Don’t worry about your hero, or shadows, or anything else we’ve talked about for now. Remember, it’s important to come up with at least five qualities or values. Again, you may find Sandy Tritt’s chart helpful.

Examples: Vengeful, dishonest, power hungry

PART 3. Next to each quality or value you’ve written for your hero, write the exact opposite quality.

Examples: Let’s say that some of your character’s heroic traits are charm, intelligence, confidence, and a good sense of humor.

Ex 1. Quality: Charm – Depending on just what you imagine your character’s charm to be like, opposing traits might be things like rudeness, pushiness, abrasiveness, clumsiness, or crudity.

So depending on which “opposite” feels right to you, you might put “rudeness” or “pushiness.”

Ex 2. Quality: Confidence – Opposing trait possibilities might include insecurity, narcissism, fearfulness, embarrassment, or shame, which leaves you with:

Heroic Trait………………..Opposite Quality

Confidence……………………..Shame

or

Confidence…………………..Insecurity

Ex 3. Value: Honesty – This time we’ll use a value rather than a personality characteristic or quality. Values that are in opposition to honesty might include deceitfulness or dishonesty

Heroic Trait………………….Opposite Quality

Honesty…………………………Deceitfulness

or

Honesty………………………….Dishonesty

PART 4. Add a Behavior

Beside the positive qualities and values you’ve written for your hero, to the right of your list of the exact opposite qualities you wrote in Part 3, write an example of a behavior (not a thought or feeling) that demonstrates the opposite (non-heroic) quality or value .

Ex 1. (Note: The examples are simple for the sake of space, but you can write as much as you like, or give examples of more than one “opposite” or “behavior.”

Heroic Trait…………….Opposite…………….Behavior

Charm…………….Rudeness…………..Telling crude jokes

Confidence……….Insecurity…….”Fishing” for compliments

Honesty…………Deceitfulness……Burning a letter that “tells on” your character

PART 5. Compare Your Hero’s Shadow (the Opposite column) to your Villain’s Characteristics

Check the second list you made, the one in which you wrote down the qualities that make your villain a villain, and see if any of them match you’re hero’s Opposite traits, values, or behaviors. Since the Opposite qualities and behaviors are your Hero’s shadow, they should be personified by your villain.

If you don’t see a lot of overlap, it’s time to start thinking about how you can incorporate the “dark sides” of your hero’s qualities into your villain. In most cases, that means you need to think of ways in which your villain can manipulate or force your hero to express or embrace the shadow qualities you’ve listed under “Opposite.”

Villains Should Personify Heroes’ Shadows

A good villain is always the dark side of your hero; the greatest danger your hero faces should be that under the right pressures and given the right circumstances, your hero could embrace the very qualities that make the villain a villain–and at some point in the story, she should start to do exactly that, even if she does it by accident.

If your villain’s qualities are truly the things your hero hates most–especially if they scare him–he’ll do anything to bring the villain down, even if that means becoming the villain. Remember, shadow qualities are the things that infuriate you the most, that make you the sickest. We’re drawn to fight the things we hate, which means that your villain can become your hero’s nemesis only if the villain’s character and behavior really arouse an obsessive drive in your hero. The Line Between Hero and Villain is Thinner than You Think.

What makes the hero different from the villain, in the end, is choice: the hero chooses not to become his shadow, and instead acknowledges and incorporates his shadow qualities into the rest of his personality.

In many cases the villain is a fallen hero, someone who would have been just like the hero if he’d been able to resist the draw of evil. Even in real life, the more we hate someone or something, the more likely we are to become the very thing that we hate. Consider the irony of killing someone to stop murder, as in the cases of fanatics who kill doctors who perform abortion. There’s irony, too, in the venom of those Christian anti-gay-rights activists who insist that “God hates gays.”(So much for “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so…”) Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of those rare heroes who never swayed from practicing what he preached. He believed so strongly in peace he refused to hurt others in his pursuit of it.

Consider the words of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb” and the scientific director of the Manhattan Project responsible for the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasakai, when he saw what his creations had done: “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” Though some believe that the “Little Boy” and “Big Man” bombs dropped in Japan ended WWII, even Oppenheimer viewed the deaths as unconscionable as all the others. For years after, he was a vocal opponent of the development of more nuclear weapons. Examples

Fiction is filled with examples of heroes and their personified shadows, some more obvious than others.

Star Wars

In the Star Wars saga, both Anakin (episodes 1-III) and Luke Skywalker (episodes IV-VI) are seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin succumbs and embraces his Shadow to becomes Darth Vader; he later tries to talk Luke into doing the same thing. Though Luke is tempted, in the end he not only resists but is able to redeem Anakin as well.

Lord of the Rings

In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Ring essentially draws each character’s Shadow to the fore; Gollum is consumed by his and the evil in the Ring, and when Frodo carries the Ring, he nearly falls prey as well.

The Matrix

In the Matrix trilogy, Neo has to become Agent Smith and acknowledge, embrace, and overcome his own shadow to defeat the machine world.

Se7en

In the film Se7en, Mills not becomes wrath, in so doing he becomes the killer he’s pursued, thus falling prey to his own shadow.

The Prestige

In The Prestige, Angier becomes a murderer to avenge the accidental murder his wife.(You’ll notice he has to kill off his own moral side to do it.)

The Wizard of Oz

In The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch is Wicked because she wants revenge on Dorothy for killing her sister; instead, Dorothy becomes a killer by killing the Witch

Fairy Tales

Fairy tales are actually sociopolitical propaganda (see Bettelheim’s classic book The Uses of Enchantment), so Cinderella and Snow White epitomize the “good girl’s” moral path while the villainesses epitomize the “bad girl’s” path.

* Snow White: If Snow White embraced the kind of vanity the Queen did (her shadow), she could become just like the Queen * Cinderella: If Cinderella indulged herself in self-pity and a sense of entitlement (her shadow), she could easily become like her wicked stepsisters and stepmother

How Heroes Fall When Villains Push

The trick to moving your hero from the side of good into the gray area between good and evil is to have your villain push your hero’s proverbial buttons. Marriage is the most important thing in the world to your hero, and the very concept of divorce outrages him? The villain will try to find a way to damage the relationship by introducing temptation or doubt into that relationship.

The hero’s most obvious reaction will be rage, and probably not just at the villain, but also at herself and her spouse for being affected. The more the relationship is damaged, the more hurt and anger will be involved and the less likely the couple is to repair that relationship, which causes the likelihood of divorce to skyrocket. If the divorce happens, a part of the foundation on which the hero bases her life and identity has been destroyed, and unless she’s able to acknowledge and incorporate the new, uglier parts of herself, she’s on the way to becoming a villain herself.
