Did John Rolfe Witness the First African Slaves Arrival to North America?

John Rolfe was an Englishman born in Heacham, Norfolk, in 1585. During his early years Spain held almost a world monopoly on the highly lucrative tobacco trade, a subject of which he had a particular interest.

The Spanish crops were mostly grown in their southern colonies of the New World where the climate was ideal for the growth of tobacco, England being a particularly prominent customer for their product.

Rolfe in his formative years studied the tobacco trade in detail and managed to ‘acquire’ some of Spain’s unique tobacco seeds, this was remarkable as in Spain selling them was a crime punishable by death.

This Spanish strain of tobacco had a number of customer satisfaction benefits over other countries crops, firstly it was sweeter, yet most significantly it was far stronger in nicotine, a narcotic, the stimulant value of which and addictive properties not being understood for many years to come, users only felt compelled that they wanted more.

To successfully compete against Spanish growers Rolfe recognized the need to move to a more favourable climate than England’s and so he set sail for the New World

English colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in North America. This colony had been formed in the May of 1607 although unbeknown to Rolfe it was as yet struggling to survive.

In 1609 Rolfe boarded the ‘Sea Venture’ heading for Jamestown, however as they approached Bermuda a hurricane struck and wrecked the ship, some travellers were saved but among the dead were Rolfe’s wife and baby daughter.

Rolfe himself had survived and in the May of 1610 he left Bermuda and finished his voyage in a repaired ship that had been a part of the small convoy of which the Sea Venture had been the flagship.

Upon Rolfe’s arrival the British colonies in Virginia were already producing a grade of inferior tobacco, but finding markets to buy their low quality produce was proving to be a problem. But when Rolfe’s Spanish seed crop succeeded and became available for sale the local and export markets demand started to rocket.

John Rolfe named his brand ‘Orinoco Tobacco’ thus paying homage to one of tobacco’s greatest advocates, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Orinoco being the flagship on his exploratory voyage to find the fabled city of El Dorado.

Rolfe’s plantations were well situated alongside the St James River outside of Jamestown for the benefits of irrigation, these lands were originally uncultivated and so allowed for inexpensive expansion when trade and profits allowed, he named his plantations under the group banner of the ‘Varina Farms’.

In 1615 he re-married but this time to the daughter of an indigenous Indian chief, her name was ‘Pocahontas’ who later became famous in her own right as the pagan squaw who was converted to become a refined Christian bride, her tale became so well-known that she was invited to visit England to meet with the royal family.

So up until the August of 1619 the English colonies in Virginia had used only indigenous Indian labour or Europeans who had been enticed to migrate to the New World to find a better life than living in squalor in their own country.

Then late in this month an English ‘privateer’ ship named the ‘White Lion’ sailed into the St James River to drop anchor in view of Rolfe from his properties.

John Rolfe was undoubtedly not the only person to witness the unusual cargo standing aboard the ship, but he was the author of very detailed and accurate journals of events which to this day are used as creditable educational materials of the time.

His writings describe ‘Twenty and odd’ dark skinned natives, which he presumed to be of African origin. They were promptly disembarked and offered for sale in the market to the highest bidder.

Rolfe also went further to note that the purchasers of the African slaves were the Governor of Jamestown, Sir George Yeardley and one of the primary town merchants, both of whom kept their new purchases to work on their own significant plantations.

It was later established that these particular African’s originated from the kingdom of Ndongo, (now Angola), and could only speak the language of ‘Kimbundu’, thus being totally incapable of pleading their case for help or release.

Needless to say that they had been brutally kidnapped by slave traders, themselves being of African descent, and then forcibly marched to the coast to be sold to one of thirty-six Portuguese or Spanish Transatlantic slave ships.

In this case the ship had been the Spanish ‘San Juan Bautista’ which had stopped at Veracruz in Mexico to take on water when the English ‘privateer’ The White Lion and her sister ship the Treasurer had attacked.

Finding the Spanish ship in poor repair and not worth taking for a prize the victors searched for valuables but found none, in desperation to turn a profit the privateers divided up the best slaves, the White Lion then headed up the North American coast to Virginia to hopefully make a sale worthy of resupplying their ship with essential food and supplies.

Although John Rolfe’s journals from 1619 are now commonly used to describe the origins of slavery in North America, other less prominent tales exist which infer that African slaves may have been present in other parts of the Americas from as early as the 1400’s.

Therefore it is not unreasonable to assume that John Rolfe may have been a genuine witness to the arrival of the first slaves to the thirteen colonies of Virginia in North America, but the Transatlantic Slave Trade, whilst still in its infancy had already begun to make significant deliveries of its African cargo elsewhere.

Myanmar’s Air Developments

Myanmar is a fascinating destination, which has been discovered by millions of tourists in recent years. There are several luxury hotels in Yangon and colonial-style properties in Mandalay, in order to meet the high demand for accommodation. In addition, Myanmar’s visa rules have been made easier and visitors from certain destinations can get their visas on arrival. All of that take effect in tourist arrival numbers.

The prediction is for an increase in annual visitors to 6,000,000 in 2017. By 2030, the number of passengers is expected to rise to 30 million. However, such growth in tourism really depends on infrastructure improvements.

There is a need for better airport infrastructure to cope with the development in the tourism industry. The large distances between the major cities and attractions, require air developments during the upcoming years. Because of that, Myanmar’s aviation industry has opened its doors to foreign investments.

Companies have recognized the huge potential of hotels in Yangon and other tourism-related businesses and are seeking for investment opportunities. The fast-growing airline industry in Myanmar, attracts many international air companies to increase their services to the country, which seems as the most underserved market in Southeast Asia.

There are eight airlines in Myanmar: Air Mandalay, Air KBZ, GMA, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan, Asia Wings and Mann Yadanapon. Three of them are already interested in running airports in Myanmar. Myanmar Airways International will buy new aircraft, in response to the massive increase in tourism. There will be also more flights from Yangon, Mandalay and the capital Nay Pyi Daw.

The first airplane of Mann Yadanapon airline landed in Yangon International Airport. A brand-new ATR 72-600 aircraft based, has started flying to domestic destinations such as Yangon, Nyaung and Heho. The new aircraft has arrived from Toulouse, France where it was manufactured. The second plane will arrive in Yangon at the end of March, and the third plane will arrive in November. Currently, more than 20 foreign airlines are operating in Myanmar. Bangkok Airways, for example, has launched new services to Myanmar’s capital Nay Pyi Daw.

Myanmar has 49 airports, three international and 46 domestic. Last year, there was a record of 4,000,000 visitors in domestic airports across Myanmar. The highest number of visitors landed in Yangon International Airport, followed by Mandalay International Airport and Heho Airport. By April 2014, Myanmar airports, including the state-of-the-art airport in the capital Nay Pyi Daw, will transfer to private sector use and will be open for foreign international investors.

Private investors have been invited to upgrade 30 domestic airlines in Myanmar. Initial access to this market has granted for Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China. Myanmar is also considered as a key market for low-cost carriers, as many workers in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Thailand are from Myanmar.

Your Pet And The New Arrival

A new baby disrupts and turns life upside down for everyone in the household including the pets in the house. The unused, untidy storage rooms, or the office is scouted out to decide which room is going to be rearranged to make space for the new arrival. The hustle, and bustle begins early on in the pregnancy. The house gets purged. There are many adjustments to be made. How do you let the pet in on what’s going on? He’s watching you and maybe he already knows as he picks up one of his stuffed animals and begins to shake it vigorously until the stuffing comes out. He may be showing us just what he thinks of the news and the changes it has precipitated. With all that goes on even a well trained pet may react negatively to the change in attention and focus. Remember he was your “first baby” How will he greet the “new baby” in town? Get you vets advice for what you can do to get Fido ready for babies impending arrival. Positive reinforcements of training techniques should be used consistently before baby arrives. Not being allowed in rooms the pet has spent time in, new smells and most importantly new sounds are things to prepare the pet for. It has also been suggested that you bring an item belonging to the baby home and allow the pet to smell it. Limit the dog and or cat from the chosen baby room before the baby arrives to give them time to make the necessary adjustments in their environment. Set up routines such as the times you will walk your dog and when he eats etc. Plan areas for play away from the babies room. This is the time to try new training techniques to correct problem behavior, use words and sounds in your training that the dog responds to best.Give lots of praise. Be sure that at all times you are in control of your pet.

Hopefully as time goes by your pet will respect your baby as a “new leader” in the family and bond well with your growing child.

Steps for Helping Your Pet Adjust to a New Baby

Before the Baby is Born

  • Make sure your pet health needs and vaccinations are up to date. A healthy pet is a happier pet. Make sure your pet has had a physical exam and that no underlying health concerns exist.
  • Take care that your pet is well groomed. Keep your pets nails clipped. Long nails may accidentally scratch your baby.
  • If you haven done so, consider having your pet spayed or neutered. Doing so now will help decrease the jealous feelings that may cause both dogs and cats to mark their scent around the house.
  • Consider obedience training for your dog. Every dog should understand the commands of come and sit. There are many books to help you teach your dog these basic commands, as well as many dog obedience courses for you to consider. Contact your local pet supply store or veterinarian for information about dog obedience classes in your area.
  • Address any serious behavior problems. If you have problems disciplining your pet or your pet has anxiety, seek the help of a specialist before the arrival of your baby and be sure to get the specialist opinions of how your pet will react once the new baby arrives.
  • Consider behaviors you will want to change after baby arrives and begin working to change them now. If you allowed your pet to jump freely into your lap before, now is the time to teach your pet not to do so. Block access to areas that will be “off limits” for several months before the baby arrives, for example, no longer allow your pet to enter the room that will be the nursery when the baby arrives. Consider laying double stick tape onto furniture to discourage your pet from jumping on it.
  • Begin to spend less time with your pet. Attempt to set a schedule that will mimic the one you will have after the baby arrives. This will prepare your pet for the decreased amount of attention it will receive.
  • Invite friends with babies over for visits. This interaction will allow your pet to get accustomed to the look, smell, and sounds of a baby.
  • Start “playing house”. Carry a baby doll around with you and take care of the doll as if it were a real baby. Change its diaper, pretend like you are giving it a bottle, and rock it to sleep.

After Baby has Arrived

  • Allow your pet to sniff the baby’s belongings before bringing home baby. After the baby is born, bring home a towel or blanket that has the baby’s scent on it and allow your pet to become accustomed to the new baby smell. Do this before bringing home baby from the hospital but after the baby is born.
  • Don’t scold your pet for being curious about the baby. This is natural. Allow your pet to sniff the baby’s feet – a little lick won’t hurt the baby and a positive introduction will go a long way towards a healthy relationship between baby and pet. Brushing your dog or cat away each time your pet comes near your new baby may cause feelings of resentment.
  • Consider having someone else introduce the baby to your pet so that Mom can show the anxious pet needed attention at this time.
  • A gradual process of introducing the pet to the new baby is often recommended. Some experts suggest isolating the pet from the new baby for a few days so it can get used to the idea of Mom and baby together in the environment.
  • If you are contemplating a new puppy or a kitten for your new baby first playmate, you may want to reconsider. Puppies and kittens also have demands that must be met. Consider carefully whether you want to spend time training a puppy or a kitten or if you would rather spend that time with your new baby.

And Most Importantly

  • Do not leave your newborn unattended with a pet.
  • Never leave a dog and a young child unsupervised.

The Arrival Of The South West Monsoon

The onset, advance and progress of the South West Monsoon is a treat to watch and fills one with joy and excitement; especially in south Asia.

The best country to observe the progress and advance of the monsoon is India. Here, since the days of the Raj, monsoon onset days of each station are clearly defined. For instance, as far as mainland India is concerned, Kerala coast is the first to get the rains on June 1. Goa gets hit about June 5 and by the 10th of June monsoon rains must be expected in Mumbai. Kolkata has more or less the same date as that of Mumbai. Then the monsoon starts its westward march.

The area from Patna in Behar to Ahmedabad in Gujrat is covered between 10th and 15th of June. It includes famous central and South Central cities of Bhopal and Nagpur respectively. New Delhi gets its first shower by the 25th of June and by 1st July area up to Amritsar, in Punjab is covered by the South West Monsoon. West Rajasthan is the last to receive monsoon rain and typically no rain is received until the middle of July.

In Pakistan, Lahore is one of the first stations to be hit by monsoon in the first week of July. Then comes the turn of the piedmont plains and Islamabad. Peshawar does not get any rain of importance and the monsoon normally does not cross Attock.

In the south, Karachi has but a little rain by the second week of July but westwards to this station, little or no rain is received and the complete Province of Baluchistan is out of pale of a monsoon.

Having said this, if we return to India then the Andaman Islands are the first to get rains from the South west Monsoon. Here the date of onset of monsoon is May 15th. The rain is more in intensity and duration than that of mainland India; Cherrapunji in Meghalaya being an exception.

The most sort after place, however, is the tip of Kerala coast where hotels are reserved for observing the first monsoon rain. People from all over the world come to this coast and wait impatiently with full of excitement for the thick dark clouds of a monsoon accompanied with cool pleasant wind to arrive.

In short, the arrival of a monsoon is a treat to watch especially in India where common people are tired of the excessive heat of the Pre-monsoon months.

Choosing the Right Wedding Music

Music is important in our life. The wedding music is an essential part for a successful wedding arrangement, both during the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. Music is all about feelings and a wedding represents the greatest of all our feelings; love. The music you choose should therefore reflect this. Here are some tips you can use when you choose music for your wedding.

The arrival of the wedding guests

Live music or pipe in music should be played while guests arrive. The purpose is to relax the atmosphere and make it cosy for the guests. For this purpose slow, smooth instrumental music like cool smooth jazz can be selected. Once as the guests arrive, one or two solo’s should be performed. Songs like “I will always love you” and Baccarach songs like “The look of love” or “This Guy/Girl’s in love with You” might be a good choice.

The Wedding Ceremony

Trumpet sounding when bride is ready to enter. “Trumpet Voluntary” or “Trumpet Tune and Air” (Henry Purcell) would be great or even the traditional “Here comes the Bride” by Wagner. During ceremony, one wonderful song should be performed for example “You are my Everything”. Remember too much music could tire the guests, and make for a lengthy ceremony.

The Wedding Reception

At Reception, choose a great song to walk in on when announced to the guests. Married couple must choose their first dance song which can be slow and romantic or wild and crazy. This is their “special” song. Live DJ’d music is a plus especially if the DJ has good talking skills. This can keep the reception exciting and guests will have a great time, a time remembered for years to come. A nice touch is a song dedicated to the families of the Bride and Groom by the Bride and Groom.

The Wedding Wrap up

One last song just for the Bride and Groom before they leave and followed by at least 15 – 20

minutes of relaxing instrumental music for guests to settle down before they leave.

In order for you to save money on hiring a minicab or taxi, book yourself in advance minicab through transfer specialists. Hiring a chauffeur service has lots of perks and here are just some of them.

Disaster Preparedness Plan – Presence Of Mind Is The Key To Survival

Becoming panicky when disaster strikes is not a good thing to do, as this would even worsen the situation that you are in. If you want to be ready to face any kind of calamity that might hit your area, having your own disaster preparedness plan would truly serve you well.

Before anything unpleasant happens, make sure that you equip yourself with the proper knowledge and tools that you can use once calamities arrive. For instance, during fires, you should know that staying down on the ground would prevent you from inhaling noxious gases and at the same time keep you away from hot air. Since cool air is denser than hot air, it tends to stay at the bottom and therefore, the ground would be a wise decision to stay at when the building you are in is on fire.

A disaster preparedness plan that will give you a walk-through when the tragedies arrive would be a good thing to keep in handy. If you are the type of person who tends to panic at times of trouble, then this kind of plan would help you gather your thoughts as it will give you direct instructions that you could follow. You can create one yourself today while you are still not in a panicky mode.

You must always remember the basic necessities that would help you survive any kind of calamity. You should store water in containers that would prevent any kind of contaminant from entering and mixing with the water. Aside from this, you can also save some water that you would use to wash yourself with.

Keep foods in stock, especially ones that do not expire easily and last for many years. Avoid storing foods that are high in salt content, as these would not be beneficial for you when you are in a situation when you cannot easily find a source of drinking water. Approximate the amount of food that you would need to provide for everyone in your family.

Clothing would also be essential in times of calamities, especially during cold weathers. Keep coats and blankets ready all the time so that you would have means to warm yourself and keep your core body temperature from dropping to unfavorable levels. Setting aside as many warmers as possible for you and your family would ensure that you have enough protection from the cold.

In creating your own disaster preparedness plan, you can make diagrams of your house or of the location that you are in so that you can create routes when you need to move to a different location. You can create sheds that would be sturdy enough to hold the things you have prepared and store it until the time when calamity arrives. Asking your neighbors to help you with working this plan out would also make them ready to face any kind of tragedy that might come along, and your community would all be aware of what to do in times of crisis.

Ordering Fresh Flowers

Ordering fresh flowers is an incredibly useful thing to be able to do. Whenever we are stuck for a gift to get someone, flowers are always a great option that anyone will appreciate. Here is something that will look great in someone’s home and can brighten up their rooms, but at the same time won’t take up too much space or be permanent. This is great for the person who seems to have everything as if you were to get an ornament for someone with an already cluttered house you would risk them not having any space for it, or having to display it on their side board or windowsill when in reality they can’t stand the site of it – which isn’t good for anyone.

The other great bonus of ordering fresh flowers is that you can do so from the comfort of your home and can get them delivered anywhere at any time. This is of course very useful for if you want to send your flowers long distance – for example maybe your recipient lives a long way away and you want them to receive the flowers without them having to wait until you arrive. At the same time ordering fresh flowers is great for someone who has forgotten an event such as an anniversary, birthday or valentines day. This way you don’t have to run out last minute to find a present from an ill-suited shop, but can instead reassure your partner or friend that their gift is on the way – and the fact that they’re fresh will make sure it doesn’t seem like an afterthought. In fact, by ordering fresh flowers online from certain websites it can be possible to avoid ever missing a special occasion again. This is because it’s possible to order fresh flowers in advance to arrive at a certain date. This way as soon as your remember that someone’s birthday is coming up, you can then order the flowers to arrive for that date. Alternatively an even better method is to set a standing order for flowers to arrive at certain dates, this could mean that your recipient receives their flowers every year on their birthday without fail and you don’t have to do anything to make this happen. Ordering fresh flowers finally makes a great surprise gift – we all love receiving post and imagine how happy your recipient will be when they get a knock at the door only to be presented a fresh bunch of flowers from you. It’s a great way to give someone a good start to their day and to let them know you’re thinking of them.

Choosing your flowers when you order fresh flowers is important and you need to imagine what the flowers will look like when they arrive in the flesh (as it were) rather than online. If you happen to know that the person has a favourite flower then this is always a great bet as it will mean that you can get them something that you know they like and will also tell them that you listen to what they want and that you care enough to remember which is very flattering. Finally for something different try looking into ordering fresh flowers as part of gift baskets to give them a more creative and considered present.

Compatibility Numerology Reports

Using compatibility numerology reports will help to you lead your life in the right direction whether it is your career, your love life or your personal interests. The origin of numerology is sometimes thought to be within ancient Jewish mysticism while others tend to believe it had an origin amongst mathematicians. Numerology utilizes numeric values associated with your name and birthdate to arrive at conclusions regarding your character, your interests and your destination in life and love. A compatibility numerology report is generally composed of all the significant numbers and personality characteristics that will help you to find that special someone. If you use your chart in the right way, you can more efficiently and definitively find your way in life.

What are Compatibility Numerology Charts?

Compatibility numerology involves utilizing your month, day and year of birth as well as your given name to define pertinent qualities to your characters. You begin by taking a look at your birthday such as August 2, 1977. You then convert it to its numeric format- 8/2/1977. You then begin to add the digits, combining 8 and 2 to arrive at 10 and 10 and 1977 to arrive at 1987. You then add the 1 and the 9, the 8 and the 7 to reach 25 and then finally add the 2 and the 5 to arrive at the number 7. A traditional number 7 in numerology tends to stand out in a crowd. This doesn’t necessarily mean a 7 is a leader, it simply means that attention is inadvertently and inexplicably directed towards a number 7’s personality. If handled incorrectly however, this inadvertent attention can be overwhelming or even negative all together.

Finding What is in a Name

An entire numerology chart can have multiple numbers that identify your qualities such as a Name Number. This particular number is also called an expression number and it is comprised of the letters and numbers designated by your name driven down to a single numeric digit. It is based on associating the alphabet with a number, beginning with the letter A as 1, B as 2 all the way to the number 9 for I and then the cycle repeats itself with J being 1, K being 2 and so on. The Name Number is typically thought to describe the manner in which you behave or express yourself and it is also considered to be a good representation of where your most intrinsic personal talents.

In a numerology compatibility chart there are also subsets of a the Name Number such as the Motivation Number. While still using your name, you take things a step further and analyze the vowel letters found within the characters (a, e, i, o and u). The type of motivation this number refers to is that elusive explanation behind your actions. The next time jealousy shows up out of no where or your persistent nature is admired, you can attribute it to your Motivation Number.

By using a compatibility numerology chart, someone that is a number 7 will have the opportunity to see their qualities, strengths, weaknesses and then hopefully they will have a better picture of who will be most compatible in their love life or even what career choice would be a great fit. Consider for a moment if you had the chance to have your entire future laid out in front of you… would your life be made easier? Would you have some simple reassurance that you were heading in the right direction? Would you have the chance to re-direct your life instead of watching in swirl around, wandering in front of you with nothing deliberate or meaningful? The answer is that is simply depends on how serious you take the science of numerology and whether you regard the amazing truths within your numbers with respect, or if you merely regard it as a coincidence.
