Famous Psychologist – Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was a great personality who earned a good name during his life time and has made many helpful and famous discoveries that are still being used in the field of psychology to determine personality traits of people.

Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856 in Freiberg in Moravia. He was a son of a wool merchant who had a great sense of humor. Sigmund was a child of his father’s second wife who was just 21 years of age when she gave birth to him.

He was brilliant as a child and did very well in his academics. After his primary education he took admission into a medical school. He involved himself in research and neurophysiology. He spent many years in an attempt to reduce personality to neurology.

He was the one who made the concept of conscious and unconscious mind popular. The conscious mind of an individual is the one that he is aware of at any time and the present memories, perceptions, feelings, thoughts, and fantasies. While working on this concept he discovered the pre-conscious mind. The pre-conscious mind comprises of the available memory. The thoughts and memories that a person is not aware off at a particular time but can be readily brought to mind. Freud discovered that these two layers of the memory of mind are the smallest parts.

The largest part of the mind is made up of unconscious memory. This part of the memory is made up of things, thoughts, memories, perceptions that a person is not aware of including things that originate in this area of mind like instincts, drives and memories associated with a traumatic situation. We may not know about the presence of such feeling and emotions but they may suddenly appear when we see something tragic or traumatic happening to someone else.

Freud also explained the concept of Id, Ego and Super Ego. All these things apply to human nervous system. The Id works with pleasure principle. It understands the demands of the mind and tries to take care of it immediately. For example, when you feel hungry, you start looking for something to eat. If you ignore such demands for a time, there comes a point when the Id demands more attention from you to satisfy it. At this time the Ego of the individual becomes active and starts searching for food to satisfy the urge.

The Ego of an organism struggles to fulfill the Id and maintains the record of resources, rewards and punishments. The records that is stored for future reference such as what trick to follow and things to avoid becomes Super Ego.

Sigmund Freud also gave some more concepts like anxiety, depression and defense mechanisms to the world of psychology. These and such other concepts that were propagated by Sigmund Freud made him popular and famous in the field of psychology.

The Best Blues Songs Ever

It is entirely a matter of taste as to which are the best Blues songs. However it is possible to speculate as to the most influential songs.

It can be argued that Blues music bought about a greater awareness of the plight of African Americans, as new audiences became interested in its origins and originators.

I clearly remember as an adoring fan of Muddy Waters; Howlin Wolf and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, feeling outrage at the early 60’s news reports that a whole people were subjected to such terrible discrimination. The anti establishment feelings so typical of my generation, and empathy with subjugated Black Americans, would manifest itself in the aggressive British interpretation of their Blues music.

The adoption of Blues music by young British musicians, and their successful introduction of that music to white America, inspired a whole generation of white American musicians to rediscover the music and popularize it. This brought recognition to the Black musicians that had created it.

It is the ten songs that had the greatest influence on the “discovery” of Blues that I am presenting here.

Blues music was introduced into Britain after the war. Records came in through the sea ports, and well informed successful Jazz band leaders financed visiting Black artists to visit and play on their shows. Inevitably, their performance influenced the young British musicians who, were looking for something different from the pre war dance band scene.

Smokestack Lightening

Written and recorded by Howling Wolf.

Smokestack Lightening is based on a driving riff and has no chord changes. Released in Britain in 1964 by Pye Records, it reached the Top 50. In 1999, the song was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award

Boom Boom

Written and recorded by John Lee Hooker, the first American blues artist to do a club tour of Britain. Boom Boom was released as a single in 1961.

Boom Boom is a classic example of Hookers unique timing and chord structure.

The Animals recorded “Boom Boom” for their 1964 UK debut album “The Animals”. Their rendition generally follows John Lee Hooker’s version, except it conforms to a 12 bar sequence.

Worried Life Blues

The first song written and recorded by Maceo Merriweather in 1941

Inspired by “Someday Baby Blues,” recorded by Sleepy John Estes in 1935, however “Worried Life Blues” has gone on to become a Blues “standard” and has reputedly been covered by more artists than any other blues song.

I Got My Mojo Working

Written by Preston Foster and popularized by Muddy Waters. Possibly the most influential of the Blues artists to visit the UK. Covers of this were made by many artists but of special importance were Alexis Korner, a pioneer and possibly the first British Blues band with Blues Incorporated, & Manfred Mann, a highly successful commercial band. Both versions were released in 1964, in itself a testament to the impact of Waters original.

Baby Please Don’t Go

By Big Joe Williams, and covered by “Them” becoming the first “hit” record by Van Morrison in 1964. It became the weekly signature tune for the hugely influential television show “Ready Steady Go”. The “B” side of the single featured the now-legendary “Gloria”. It became a top ten hit in the UK, and launched “Them” and Van Morrisson to world fame.

Hoochie Coochie Man

Written by Willie Dixon and recorded by Muddy Waters in 1957 but covered by almost every blues artist since! The verse and intro are played over “stops” that were to become a feature of many blues recordings. The first cover version was released in 1962 by Alexis Korner on his album “R&B from the Marquee”

Crossroads Blues

Written and recorded by Robert Johnson in 1937 and largely unnoticed until Cream released their version in 1968. The song ranked #10 in the worlds greatest solo’s, contributed greatly to the world wide fame of the band and to Eric Clapton in particular.

This success bought Robert Johnson’s small but remarkable catalogue of songs to the attention of the music world and has earn’t him the acclaim he so richly deserves.

Sweet home Chicago

Robert Johnson 1937. This song has become the Blues “anthem”.

The list of artists who have covered the song is immense, including Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Status Quo, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Blues Band, and the 1980 Blues Brothers movie.

Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

Written and recorded by Solomon Burke in 1964, For many years it was the opener for the Rolling Stones live shows. They released a live version of the song on their 1965 E.P. “Got Live if you want it”. The Rolling Stones were to become the most successful Rock band of all time, and they have been fundamental to the wider awareness and appreciation of the early Blues artists. They took there name from a Muddy Waters song “Rolling Stone”. The songs riff was “borrowed” for the first “Small Faces” hit single “What You Gonna Do About It” also in 1965. The successful “soul” artist, Wilson Pickett covered the song and it entered the US charts in 1967. This song also features in the 1980 “Blues Brothers movie” The song, as are several of those mentioned, is ranked on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Hound Dog

A twelve-bar blues written by Jerry Leiber and originally recorded by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in 1952. In 1965 she toured Europe as a part of the American Folk and Blues festival that had become an annual event and had become so influential to the emergence of British Blues. The 1956 remake by Elvis was his second #1 hit and is possibly the first blues song to become a #1 hit record.

Strategies for a Productive Summer

In our busy and fast-paced world, summer is commonly the time when kids are off from school, people travel, weddings and graduations occur, and family reunions take place. It’s a time when the frantic pace of work slows down a bit, simply because the people who are typically driving are taking a break. This puts you in the driver’s seat! This gives you a chance to take advantage of the downtime and better position yourself so that you can play full out when the pace picks back up in the fall.

To assist you, I want to give you five strategies on how to maximize this “season” when you or others (clients, co-workers, vendors, etc.) are away so that you are prepared to “charge” for the rest of the year!

1. Rest. The concept of periodicity means that you allow your body a time to rest, re-engage, and recharge (or train) so that you achieve maximum energy and the results that you want during the periods that require you to push harder. If you continue at 150 mph 24 hours per day/7 days per week, you will burn out. More importantly, you will not get the results you want. So, plan time each summer for a period of rest. (For you workaholics out there, rest means no voicemail, no email, no clients, no “work mode”, and no initiatives that are not wholly enjoyable.) Turn off work 100% while on vacation! If you do, your ability to run full out when you return will be twice as great.

2. Clean up. The days before you leave on vacation are a great time to make a game plan for yourself when you return. Your departure date is a deadline that’s not likely to move. Start by challenging yourself to sort the emails, do all of the follow-ups, and close the open loops before you leave. As you do this, make a list for when you return of what you will do next. If you want to be most productive, schedule what you will do when, so you can resume your working habits quickly when you return.

3. Schedule “catch up” time. If you are able, allow a “phase in” plan that provides you with personal time in the office to go through email, mail, and other things that have accumulated while you were gone. Often, people come back to a full schedule with no time to “re-settle” which is why they work on vacation. Resist the urge to work while away. Instead, plan for the inevitable chaos that will be there when you return: block off part of a day when you first return to catch up.

4. Create a project plan. This season, if you will not be traveling and are left at the office while others are away, you may find yourself in the “summer lulls”. Before this slower season even hits, have a plan for what you want to accomplish during the down time. This is your “off season.” Use this time to do the projects that are important, but not urgent: this is the time for the projects that you just never seem to get to, such as updating your website, reading, taking personal development classes, etc. Know in advance how you will use this time so that you are prepared to dive into these projects once the slower season rolls in.

5. Take “time off” at home. Take a week off at home. Put aside all of those long term projects, household chores, and yard work. Spend a full week clearing up all of the tolerations that keep you frustrated and discouraged, such as fixing the printer that always prints crookedly, organizing your pots and pans, buying a calendar to organize your family, or moving the chair that you stub your toe on each morning. Plan one week where your focus is on streamlining, simplifying, and organizing your home and personal life so that during the rest of the year, you can charge forward!

Remember to allow yourself a true rest, clear up the clutter before you go and have a plan for how you will handle coming back, productively use the slower season in the office, and tidy up loose ends at home. When you are active and intentional during this slower season, employing the strategies that we’ve discussed here today, you too will have a winning, successful year!

ADHD Tip – Will More Medication Always Be The Answer To Treat Symptoms That Still Persist In ADHD?

There I was watching television one afternoon, and a commercial came on that reported, “X% of people who suffer from depression and take medication, continue to experience symptoms of depression.”

I was on the edge of my seat… I couldn’t believe it!

Were they finally going to suggest other treatment besides medication? Was someone going to finally blow the lid on treatment and actually suggest the importance of therapy and better understanding the behaviors?

All that excitement was suddenly lost the moment I heard the commercial recommend the need and use of additional medications.

I felt deflated…

It just didn’t make sense.

“Treat ongoing symptoms of depression with more medication instead of going after the root cause,” I asked myself?

That was the last straw.

What does this mean for ADHD?

Like depression, ADHD is thought to be biologically based. Research has suggested, and theorists believe, that there are abnormalities with the absorption of chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain that lead to behaviors like we see in ADHD and depression.

This is one major reason why prescribing medication is often a first step for the individual diagnosed with ADHD.

Medications are specifically engineered and researched to target these specific chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain to aide in the process.

Yet, many people with ADHD still experience symptoms of the disorder even while taking their prescribed medications.

Ask yourself what else might be going on?

While I am no expert on medication and how the brain functions, I can tell you that if your medication is not addressing the symptoms you are struggling with, then you really owe it to yourself to ask what else might be going on.

Can medications make a difference? Yes, absolutely.

But at the same time, disorders like ADHD and depression also have a very strong and powerful emotional or psychological component.

And while there is no set standard for what might happening, there has been a theme to suggest that the events in our lives, and those immediately around us can contribute to how we behave and interact with the world.

This is particularly true in children and adolescents.

Does this account for ADHD? Maybe yes, maybe no. But, I can guarantee you that regardless of the presence or absence of a disorder, we are all affected by our environment and what we are experiencing.

Disclaimer: In any discussion of medication, I feel it is of critical importance to remind you that any and all medical and mental health decisions continue to be made with your or your child’s physician, psychiatrist, or therapist who is an expert in ADHD.

Tips for Planning St Lucia Holidays

Holidays in the Caribbean are always filled with natural beauty – gorgeous white sandy beaches lined with palm trees, gently breaking waves from the clear blue waters and of course the perfect tropical sunshine. But with a holiday to St. Lucia, there is even more to see. The stunning coastline has been created by volcanic activity, and the rugged beauty of the Caribbean is all the more dramatically evident on a St. Lucia holiday. To get the most out of your holiday, here are a few tips on planning a holiday of a lifetime on this idyllic island.

• St. Lucia is well known for its jazz festival, held in early May. It has attracted many famous jazz musicians over the years, and is famous throughout the Caribbean, itself a jazz mad region. Music enthusiasts may well wish to time their trip to coincide with this festival. Indeed, all types of people, even with no interest in jazz could be attracted by this festival, with its colour and chilled out street party atmosphere.

• Quite apart from the jazz festival, May is an excellent time to plan your St. Lucia holiday for. The Caribbean high season for tourism runs generally from December to April, and accommodation and flights tend to be at their most expensive in this period. In addition, the hurricane season begins in June and runs to November – making May easily the most attractive month to travel in, combining beautiful weather with cheaper prices.

• Make sure to sample the local culture on your St. Lucia holiday. This tiny island has a unique combination of different cultural heritages, with both British and French colonial pasts as well as African and indigenous cultures. The main language spoken among locals is a form of Creole based on French, and there is a vibrant culture worth seeing in this language – the most accessible form to tourists naturally being music. Taking time out to try some real local culture will make the trip feel all the more worthwhile.

• Safety is not a concern for most tourists travelling to St. Lucia. A hepatitis A jab is required, but this is standard procedure across the Caribbean and does not represent any risk other than the short pain of the injection! Crime has risen slightly in St. Lucia in recent years, but still remains low by any standards, and tourists have nothing to worry about in general.

Things You Didn’t Know About Log Cabin Maintenance

Log home manufacturers often anticipate settling and shrinking of the homes after a period of usage. As such, they use measures such as scribing drywall around the logs to help further increase the life of such structures. Once you buy the log house, the responsibility of maintenance comes your way and unfortunately, there is not enough information on how to go about it. More often than not, the info proffered is not the right route to follow if you wish to maintain a log house for decades on end. Let’s uncover some ways you can use to manage your home.

What you need to know

Wood treatment

You may think that the initial wood treatment applied to your house is adequate to protect it from weather elements. However, this is not true. Most treatment films used on the wood are hard such that when a log moves, the film cracks, thus exposing the wood to weather elements such as rain. Over time, fungus and mildew incubate in these spaces, leading to wood rot that could cost you a home. The sound thing to do is to get rid of the film as opposed to waiting for it to wear off.

Quality matters

Always investigate the manufacturer from whom you source your log homes. Some people like taking shortcuts so that they can maximize their returns and they conduct construction with dead standing trees. Once a tree dies, internal rot begins, and over time, it starts to show, long after you bought the house. To make the situation worse, some of these manufacturers will finish the log home in a film treatment, thus locking in the rot and accelerating the breakdown process. You can save yourself a lot of difficulties by getting a high-quality log home from a trusted manufacturer from the beginning.

The takeaway

Trees have enemies which they can fend off when they are alive. However, once a tree gets cut down, it is up to humankind to protect it from weather elements to ensure that it can offer service for a long time. Look for a manufacturer who uses borates in their treatments as well as any other non-toxic substances without color or smells. CCA also comes in handy in wood preservation.

Let’s get down to the maintenance now that you know what to avoid when getting a log house.

Maintenance practices

Frequency

If you regularly maintain your home, you will protect it from getting damaged by weather elements and pests. You should carry out maintenance practices on your home at least twice a year, preferably during fall and spring. Springtime is best for checking for any damage to the house accruing from freezing water, and it also gives you adequate time to prepare for the hot months ahead.

Fall time enables you to check for damage resulting from heat such as fading and any pest infestations as you prepare for the cold months. It is imperative that you conduct maintenance during these seasons. Over time, you will realize that a fixed schedule is more effective and costs less as compared to irregular maintenance practices. It also takes up less time.

Inspect the home

Before embarking on maintenance, inspect your home to figure out what needs fixing. Start at one point of your house and move around in the interior before examining the outside. You should look for things such as damaged pipes, cracks, mold and other damages that can affect your house. Be sure to inspect the roof for leaky gutters, cracks on the chimney and any other factors that are deleterious to the stability of your home.

Cleaning up

When cleaning your cabin, you will notice a lot more than you did during the inspection. Not only is it an excellent means to be thorough in your check but it also gives you a chance to get rid of dirt such as animal feces, dust, spider webs and other such deposits in your house. A soft bristle brush, warm water, and a mild detergent are enough to clean the cabin without interfering with the aesthetics. Start by wetting surfaces before using soap on them in circular motion such that the logs do not get streaks. Hose down the cabin and let it dry for about three to four days before moving on to other steps.

Staining

Your cabin may or may not require staining, and this will be up to you once you inspect the results of your cleaning. Staining once every three years is enough if you use a high-quality stain. However, this will vary based on a cabin’s exposure to sunlight. The side which receives the most sunlight will often require a new coat before the three years are up. You know it’s time to get staining if your cabin has a dull appearance.

Sealant application

Chinking seals the joints between logs and thus protects your home from weather elements. If done right, chinking should serve you for two decades. However, this will depend on the kinds of temperatures to which your log cabin has exposure. Luckily, there is elastomeric on the market which works far better than the previously used cement-based chinking. Elastomeric requires less maintenance and thus brings the maintenance costs down.

Pest control

Do this annually for the best results. Timber cannot defend itself from infestations by insects, and if such pests go unchecked, you will incur a lot of costs in maintaining your cabin. As such, make it a habit to clean, dust and fumigate your cabin as often as possible to make infestation difficult for pests.

Annual maintenance

It is essential that you often clean your gutters and control water run-off because back splash affects the appearance of your home. Effects include darkening of some parts of the cabin and encouraging decay and infestation. These problems are costly in the long run.

If you have not maintained your cabin in a long time, it is best to start with the restoration process. It involves preparation of the surface, preservation techniques, staining, and sealing. However, it is always best to protect yourself from having to incur costs for restoration by adequately maintaining your house on an annual basis.

Dangers of Baby Oil

Who would ever think that a product made for babies could also hurt them? Unfortunately, baby oil-a staple of the nursery-contains almost 100% mineral oil which has many hazardous side effects…

First of all, mineral oil is a petroleum ingredient. It comes from crude oil and and is used as a metal cutting fluid.

It coats the skin like plastic wrap. When applied, mineral oil can promote acne and other skin disorders. Mineral oil also slows down normal cell development and causes the skin to prematurely age.

The most significant hazard is that mineral oil blocks the pores of the skin. This does not allow the skin to breathe and prevents the natural release of toxins from the skin. Since the skin is the body’s largest elimination organ, this is a serious health hazard, especially for a baby.

Another significant problem with mineral oil for babies is that it may possibly cause vitamin deficiencies because it is absorbed into the skin, gets processed by the liver and then nutrients get bound by the oil, blocking their absorption.

According to the International Agency for Research into Cancer in Geneva, mineral oils are probably carcinogenic as ‘analyses of mineral oils used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes reveal the presence of several carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are in the Eighth Report on Carcinogens, including benzofluoranthene, benzofluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene.’ They’re noted as a human teratogen by inhalation which has caused testicular tumours in the foetus. They are also skin and eye irritants and may be implicated in aspirational pneumonia.

I cannot recommend strongly enough that you do not use mineral oil for yourself, but especially not on a baby. Instead, choose a natural vegetable oil alternative. It will work far better and be safe for your baby.

Startup Compare Bear Helps Kiwis Save on Broadband

Startup New Zealand website comparebear.co.nz has expanded its services to help Kiwis get the best prices for their broadband needs.

The recently launched website, which offers utilities comparison, initially offered only power comparison, but has now expanded to include broadband comparison. The new service launch has already seen thousands of users compare, switch and save on their broadband.

Compare Bear was founded this year by Michael Speight – a former Facilities Manager – and Denis Tyu’kov – a former Financial Auditor. Both decided to quit their career jobs to dedicate their time to helping Kiwis save on their everyday bills.

“In the small amount of time the website has been running, we’ve had tens of thousands of New Zealanders use the Compare Bear website.” says Speight. “From those, thousands have found a better deal on their broadband using our online comparison tool. We saw many users switch and save on their electricity providers using Compare Bear, and now the broadband comparison service is proving to be working just as well!”

“Being able to help everyday Kiwis save on their bills is a really great feeling for us.” adds Tyu’kov. “We set out on a mission to save our customers time and money, and the feedback we have got from them has shown us that we are achieving this mission! There’s not many services available out there that gives users the tools they need to get unbiased price comparisons, and we are happy to now be providing that service.”

With Compare Bear, users answer a few questions – such as their location, usage and speed preferences – and are presented with a range of options best suited to their needs. Each option has a full breakdown of what’s included, so that each plan can be compared by the same standards. If users choose to sign up with another internet service provider, it’s a simple process to make the switch.

With the success of the power and broadband comparison service, founders Speight and Tyu’kov predict more utilities comparison services to come. “The next comparison services we plan to launch is mobile phone plan comparison and travel insurance comparison.” Speight says. “And we won’t stop there either – we can’t wait to continue adding more valuable free comparison services to our website!”

There are no charges to users to use the Compare Bear website – it’s 100% free and easy for everyone to use.
