May 2009 sees the new Star Trek movie getting rave reviews – I happen to think the most notable performance is a little cameo by Randy Pausch, read on to find out why…

I first came across the name of Randy Pausch via someone who knew I liked the area of goal achievement. Pausch was a professor at the Carnegie Mellon University in the US, who knew he was going to die pretty soon from pancreatic cancer.

He gave a lecture called The Last Lecture in 2007, which became and still is a huge success on YouTube.

When you watch it, (and I suggest you go to YouTube and search it out) you’ll see why it’s so popular.

Pausch gives a humorous account of his dreams and how he went about achieving them. He covers some mental attitude techniques, about how you can defeat yourself, or help yourself via your attitudes, and finishes by saying the lecture is for his children.

He died in 2008, but after the success of his lecture, in which he had joked about wanting to be Captain Kirk as a kid, director JJ Abrams had asked him to film a short cameo to be included in the next film.

Pausch did so, and that cameo is featured in the film – at the beginning Pausch appears as a crewman and says the line ‘Captain we have a visual’.

Normally the kind of appearance not worthy of note, but in the context of his lecture and theories of what can happen when you take certain actions, it’s dynamite to watch!

If you watch the film, try and spot it, and as I said before go to YouTube or Google and search fro Randy Pausch, and you’ll see why I think his is the most notable performance!

On the 40th Anniversary, the ship and crew loved by millions is now back and the New Star Trek Trailer tells it all. The director David LaFountaine mentions that they are not trying to re-imagine the show, that they are just restoring the show. Mike and Denise Okuda are the visual effects producers for the show and they mention that they want to preserve a lot of the original looks but bring it more into the 20th Century.

Later in the New Trailer John Burlingame, a music historian mentions that he never thought the day would come to hear the original music played live again in the exact same arrangement as the first composer wrote it. Greg Smith a conductor of the show said that most of the musicians that are playing the music for the New Star Trek Trailer and were the same musicians from the original Movie.

They’ve gone back into the archive and pulled out the original arrangements, they are just using modern digital technology and better microphones. They are definitely being very faithful and coherent with the original music notes played on the original because it’s sacred hollow ground. People are amazed at how authentic sounding the music in the New Star Trek Trailer is. This movie is remastered from the original 35mm negative in high definition.

As a Trekie you might say it’s the same Universe viewed from another dimension. They really want to respect all the Star Trek Fans with the new visual effects and high def touch they can only do in Hollywood. Measurements were taken off some of the models found at the Smithsonian and advanced video editing work was done at that point. We really feel that the new New Star Trek Trailer will prepare you for the real movie coming soon and hope it will be a truly unforgettable experience.

Star Trek Online seems to have died and been reborn. It was first developed by Perpetual Entertainment. However, as has happened recently with many other software developers they could not stay afloat and were purchased. At that time the game was shifted to a more “casual approach” including the dreaded free to play approach. This style, while popular in Asia, seems to only be a last ditch approach in US MMO’s to stave off bankruptcy (See Archlord.) In free to play, gamers don’t have to pay a monthly fee as in say WoW or Everquest. Instead, they play for free and then have the ability to buy items from an in-game store for real money. This usually has the effect of unbalancing the game, as any advantage in the game naturally progresses from skill based to who has spent the most money buying items. Then, shortly after that announcement another was made that the game was no longer in development.

However, there is now some hope. In January the title was transferred to “Another Bay Area Development Company” according to Perpetual Entertainment. As shown in the quote below from Wikipedia, that company appears to be Cryptic Studios, makers of the popular MMO’s City of Heroes and City of Villans. This would be a very fortunate turn of events and means that perhaps Star Trek Online does indeed have a bright future ahead. We can only hope.

“In early March 2008 the official website for the game posted a notice of ‘coming soon’, implying that the domain had been transferred to a new company and the game was once again under development. Cryptic Studios did in fact pick up the game and it was released on February 2, 2010. Cryptic studios decided to not use any of the previously created programming by Perpetual Entertainment and instead started from scratch. The game is split between ship combat and ground combat where players take the role of an ensign that has received a battlefield promotion to captain durning a Borg invasion. According to the product page on Direct2Drive:
