What Makes A Population Vulnerable To Disasters?

There are several groups within a population that are more vulnerable to disasters. From those that are economically disadvantaged to single-parent households and new immigrants. Below is our list of groups that have traditionally faced a much harder time preparing, responding and recovering from disasters and emergencies.

Economically Disadvantaged

Access to wealth is the strongest measurable indicator of identifying a vulnerable population. The wealthier a community (or family) becomes, the more access that group has to resources in helping them respond and recover from disasters and emergencies. A weather population can afford to live in areas with low crime, better buildings, access to transportation and food, etc. Those who don’t have access to wealth, risk living in unsafe conditions and become more vulnerable to the effects of natural disasters. Low-income families often have poorer health, poorer diets and chronic poor health leading to a much longer recovery from disasters and emergencies.

One way of narrowing this gap is providing emergency kits to families who wouldn’t typically be able to purchase emergency supplies. Emergency kits offer the opportunity to level the playing field and gives families access to basic human needs necessary to survive.

Single Parent Families, Infants & Children

Single parent homes are more vulnerable to emergencies than dual income families because of their reduced access to stable employment, transportation, and health benefits. Not having sufficient access to many of these necessities puts a single parent family at a higher risk of becoming a victim of a disaster. For example, a parent may choose to ignore evacuation orders because they can’t afford to be absent from work. Or they don’t have the means to evacuate their family and are confined to public transportation.

Isolated Individuals & Elderly

Those who are isolated may become more vulnerable to the effects of an emergency because they lack sufficient early-warning systems. Many times early warnings of a disaster or emergency are shared amongst family members and within social circles. Isolated individuals and elderly persons are more vulnerable because they lack those social circles that confirm an evacuation. Isolated individuals also tend not to stay informed of ongoing news cycles; as a result, they may not be aware of evacuation orders or any emergency at all.

Intellectually, Psychologically and Physically Disabled Individuals

Those that are psychologically and physically disabled are more vulnerable to disasters and emergencies because they may not have the capacity to recognize a threat. Furthermore, physically disabled individuals may not be able to transport themselves to safer locations. As a result, they will be more vulnerable. They may not be able to interpret environmental cues such as thunderstorms and high winds as danger signs. Furthermore, if disabled persons don’t have caregivers, often they may not understand official evacuation orders and risk becoming a victim of a disaster.

New Immigrants and Visitors

New immigrants and visitors to our country face a tough time coping with disasters and emergencies because of their lack of communication and social interaction. It’s essential for new immigrants to learn English, not only to become a citizen quickly but to communicate with neighbors and friends during emergency situations. Neighbors are often the first to respond to any disasters, and if they don’t know your family, they won’t be willing to help.

Controlling the Population of Koi in Your Pond

It is often a simple matter for pet owners to control how their pets reproduce. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Koi. Koi are able to spawn in ponds when the appropriate season and conditions arise. These conditions are typically easy for Koi to meet and can result in a sudden boom in your fish population. This can cause a lot of problems for the health of your pond.

Because Koi can grow to be so large, it is important that you take the time to control just how many fish are in your pond. While you may believe it is cruel to stymie breeding, it is far, far worse to over populate your pond. The more fish you have in a pond, the lower the water quality level is. In addition to this, Koi do not suffer from stunted growth like some species of fish. This means that they can reach their full growth in non-optimal conditions. This can result in sickness and death. Koi need room to swim. If you start off in a ten foot by ten foot pond with two Koi that can grow up to 3 feet long each, swimming conditions can become cramped quickly. Now, imagine your ten foot by ten foot pond with 50 fish that can all grow to be three feet long. These are not good conditions for your fish.

If your Koi have already bred, there are ways that you can manage your fish. First, a lot of small fish will not often cause many problems in a pond if you’re prepared for it. Watch how you feed your fish carefully. In addition to this, make certain you stick to your cleaning and maintenance schedules. Finally, make certain to do water tests at least once a month to watch your water quality. 20% water changes in your pond can significantly increase water quality if it is necessary. As your fish grow older, it will be necessary to remove them from the pond. It is suggested that you contact a water garden and inquire on whether or not they want your Koi. The older the Koi are, the more likely that a breeder or store will want them. Larger, colorful specimens can sell for hundreds of dollars to the right buyer. However, don’t breed your fish with the intention of trying to sell them for a lot of money unless you have the facilities to do so. Breeding for color and size takes effort and planning. It can also take years for one Koi to grow to sufficient size for sale.

If you have a sudden population boom in your Koi pond, it may be necessary to cull fish. Culling, or the process of selecting and killing fish with genetic mutations or poor chances of a healthy life, is an unfortunate but necessary part of keeping fish as pets. If you have the space and time to care for sick or mutated fish, you may be able to escape without having to cull any of your fish.

The Huge Increase in Population and Why It Is Happening

While there is a way to stop pregnancies the facts are that many deliberately produce large numbers of children because they are guided by a different code. Whereas some see multiple births as unnecessary and an abomination others enjoy huge families while still others believe it is the will of God. In fact, the latter are correct. God is providing everyone who has lived before with a body and new life as promised in the Old Testament prophecies (Job 5:19-22 and Isaiah 26:19).

My reincarnation has alerted me to these facts and my strong link to the Spirit has provided the answers as to why. The overall plan of God is to produce a strong spiritual harvest at the end of the day, a time we are now in. In a vision I was shown that time as 4,000 years long and it is called the ‘day of the lord’ in the bible.

At the start of it a group of people were seeded with Spirit and with a life force that is not ‘normal’ for others. It is the voice within, their 6th sense, and their conscience, all of which have been given a different name and separated as if they are strangers to each other. This is because religions fear it.

The religious organisations depend on heaven and hell as destinies for what they call the ‘soul’. They present a regime of laws and conditions to preserve it and make it worthy of ascending to heaven after death. They enforce notions of magical words and rituals to ‘save’ souls that might have strayed from the ‘faith’.

‘Faith’ is belief in the ridiculous without evidence. There is no evidence for either heaven or hell and yet they are the building blocks of the World Order. They are also the force behind terrorism.

Now everyone who has lived is back and they are judged according to their deeds over the course of the day of the lord. Those who were murderers of God’s people are now being killed. Those who abused and terrorised others are having the same done to them. Those who slaughtered children before their parents’ eyes are now experiencing the same.

Over the course of that time and through many wars and disruptions, including migration, the people have been reincarnated in many groups, colours, and sex. As a man in my last life and female in this one it is easy to understand why so many now feel they are in the wrong bodies. Millions have memory or some recall of reincarnation and are now speaking out about it.

It is why we have such a huge spike in population because now we are all back and ready for the final act, which will see the world as we know it change forever. The scene for that event is already taking shape.

Homeowners Fall Prey to Bed Bugs As Population Nears Pandemic Proportions

Once thought to be extinct, the population of bed bugs has skyrocketed over the last decade. These insects have become an increasing nuisance, as reports of infestations have risen sharply. Dr. Michael Potter, a renowned University of Kentucky etymologist recently said, “Bed bugs are just going ballistic everywhere. It is going to really rock this country.”

These pests can thrive in a variety of locations, including homes, hospitals, delivery trucks, and dorms. Human blood is the food of choice for these parasites, as an infestation can flourish for months unbeknownst to the host. Although unable to transmit pathogens to humans, bed bugs can cause skin irritation and soreness, as well as obvious mental and emotional stress. The best defense against this sly pest is identification and detection.

What is a Bed Bug?

Bed bugs are nocturnal parasites that typically prey on human hosts while they sleep. A numbing and anticoagulant agent found in bed bugs saliva allows the human host to remain undisturbed while the parasite feeds. Adults typically measure ¼-inch long, and are wingless with a flat head and brown in color. During the day, these parasites lay dormant in tiny cracks and crevasses throughout a home or property. It is only at night when they rise to feed on the blood of unsuspecting humans.

Females can lay up to 500 eggs in their lifetime, and can store male sperm for up to six weeks. Pregnant females are commonly transported to new sites by unknowing human hosts. This practice has earned these parasites the title of “the ultimate hitchhiker”. Once established, adult bed bugs can live six to seven months without a blood meal, and can survive without humans by attacking rodents and birds.

Detection

Because bed bugs can easily find refuge in the smallest nook of a home, detection is often very difficult. To complicate matters, many homeowners may not realize they have an infestation for months, as these parasites feed only while their host sleeps. Early infestations often go ignored and it is only when the infestation is overwhelming that a professional is finally sought.

Early detection is always the cheapest and most successful solution. Specialized bed bug-detecting canines are used for early infestation detection. These hounds can detect an infestation as small as a single insect. Sticky traps and other monitoring devices present cheaper, yet less effective alternatives.

Control

Although the most efficient method of eradication is with a pest control professional, there are basic steps that homeowners can take to optimize their chances of complete eradication. When these parasites are found, the first reaction of many homeowners is to immediately purchase an insecticide. However, unlike cockroaches and others pests, insecticides do not easily stick to bed bugs. Rather, the first step should be the physical removal of as many bed bugs as possible. This means vacuuming all carpets and furnishings in the affected area. When finished, take the vacuum bag and seal it in a plastic container, then freeze it for at least a week before disposal. Next, wash all clothes and sheets with a borax additive and dry on high heat. Be sure to inspect all places were clothes are stored (dresser, laundry basket, etc.) for pests.

With such a cryptic critter on the rise, it is important to stay protected. Regularly washing your bedding, and being wary of any temporary skin irritation or rashes are basic guidelines in the battle against these parasites. However, without the help of an expert, it is virtually impossible to be sure one’s home is free from this pest.

Characteristics, Types and Importance, or Reasons for Population Census

Characteristics

1. It must be conducted by government of the state or country where the census is taking place.

2. It must be conducted at the same time (simultaneously) throughout the country.

3. It must involve regular counting at specific intervals of time, eg, United state of America’s population taken in 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820… 2010 which is an interval of 10 years.

4. It must reveal the population of a country at a specific period of time e.g America’s population census as of 1790 was 3,929,214; as of 1890, it was 62,979,766; as of 1990, it was 248,709,873.

5. It must involve the physical counting of people rather than by proxy.

6. It must involve experts who are knowledgeable in population studies and they must be of high integrity.

Types of population Census

There are two main types of population census and they are:

1. Defacto Population census: This is the type of population census which involves the counting of only those who are present physically during census. In this group, only those who are present physically or seen are counted.

2. De jure population census: This is the type of population census which involves the counting of people who have been permanent residents of a specific area. It does not matter whether the person is present of not. This is population census commonly referred to as counting by proxy.

Importance or Reasons of Population Census

The importance or reasons for conducting a population census include:aiding the government to know the number of people living in the country and the structure of the population; helping in the determination of taxable adults so as to know the amount of revenue expected from that sector; enabling the country to forecast her future economic needs eg, housing, food etc and the provision of statistics to the government to determine the level of unemployment in the country

Further importance could be: its assistance in the determination of the standard of living of the people in a country through per capital income; using the statistics of the number of people in a country to formulate economic policies eg, revenue formula is at times based on population figures; the estimation of the number of immigrants in a country, the assistance to the government in the distribution of resources eg, areas of high population will get more resources than areas of Low population; giving the government an idea of the different population in various parts of the country and this can help in the provision of social amenities like housing, water, electricity, roads, schools, hospitals etc. It doesn’t just end there, Population census is also very vital in giving detailed information to the government on areas of the country where population per land area is high or low; reveals level of man power by helping to reveal the total number of people who are working-when the level of manpower is high, the economic development of the country is assured and assists international agencies and governments in giving aids and other assistance to countries; assists international investors in making investment decisions. In some developing nations, Population is often used to allocate parliamentary seats. States with high Population are given more parliamentary seats than states with low population.

So all said and done, population census as we can now see is far beyond just counting the population of a particular area at a particular time. It can go a long way in helping an area’s or nation’s economy to grow even as it varies from one year to another.

World Wide Populations of Vegetarians

What do Brad Pitt, Bob Dylan, Pamela Anderson, Martina Navratilova, David Duchovny and Brigitte Bardot have in common? All are vegetarians. With the exception of India, it is estimated that about 1% of the global population abstains from meat, poultry, and fish, and that about 0.1% are vegans, avoiding all animal products. Yet these figures translate into about 60 million people worldwide, excluding India.

A large 2008 study of vegetarians [Vegetarianism in America, published by Vegetarian Times] shows that 3.2 percent of U.S. adults (7.3 million people) follow a vegetarian-based diet. About 0.5 percent (1 million) of those are vegans, who consume no animal products whatsoever. In addition, 10 percent of U.S. adults (22.8 million people) say they follow a semi-vegetarian diet, which includes occasional consumption of fish.

This study showed that of the non-vegetarians surveyed 5.2 percent, or 11.9 million people, are “definitely interested” in following a vegetarian diet in the future. This shows that many people believe a vegetarian diet is a healthy diet.

The vegetarian study collected data on age, gender and other demographic factors revealing that:

– 57.1 percent have followed a vegetarian diet for more than 10 years; 18 percent for 5 to 10 years; 10.8 percent for 2 to 5 years, 14.1 percent for less than 2 years.

– 42.0 percent are age 18 to 34 years old; 40.7 percent are 35 to 54; and 17.4 percent are aged over 55.

– 59 percent are female and 41 percent are male.

The 2008 vegetarian study also showed that 53 percent of vegetarians eat a vegetarian diet to improve their overall health. Environmental factors were cited by 47 percent, 39 percent cited “natural approaches to wellness”, 54 percent cited animal welfare; 31 percent cited food-safety concerns, 25 percent cited weight loss, and 24 percent weight maintenance.

In Western Europe the number of vegetarians varies between 2% and 4% of the population according to to a 2006 Mintel survey (Mintel.com), with the United Kingdom as the exception. The UK is shown as having the highest per capita vegetarians in Western Europe at 6% of the population. The large number of vegetarians in the UK is accounted for to some extent by health scares relating to mad cow disease.

The number of vegetarians in Eastern Europe varies between 0.3%% and 1.9% of the population according Mintel, which is a much lower percentage compared to Western European countries. Regarding the rest of the world, data is incomplete and estimates vary between 0.2% and 4% vegetarians as a percentage of population, excluding India and Israel.

Israel, at 8.5%, has the world’s second largest percent of vegetarians, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health, which equates to a remarkable 595,000 people in such a small country. India holds more vegetarians than the rest of the world combined. A 2006 survey by the Hindu newspaper found that 40 percent of the population, or 399 million people, are vegetarians.

It is estimated that today, more than 400 million Indians are vegetarian, mostly driven by class and religious concerns, with the Brahmin class expected to not eat meat, the Hindu religion suggesting vegetarianism and the Jain religion demanding it.

The Jain religion does not believe in harming other forms of life. With over 7 million members, they prohibit consumption of any kind of flesh, eggs, or honey; root vegetables (which might harm soil insects when harvested); and fruit or vegetables that have been on the ground, and those that are more than 3 days old (including pickles and preserves). Water must be boiled before drinking, and all liquids must be strained before consumption, usually with a cloth held over the mouth.

There are different types of vegetarians, depending on dietary restrictions. For example, some vegetarians exclude all cooked food, others may exclude milk or eggs, and so on.

It is interesting to note that when vegetarians are compared with non-vegetarians in the same demographic (same socio-economic-cultural background), research shows that vegetarians are less healthy. In fact, peer-reviewed research shows that vegetarians have a higher incidence of cancer, dementia, obesity, heart disease, stroke, eating disorders, infertility and other ailments.

How Many Vegans Are in the World? Exploring the Global Population of Vegans

Looking to Continue its Economic Growth – China Opening Flood Gates Population Growth

Well, it looks as if we will all be speaking Chinese in the future and China will surpass the World as the largest super power with the most people. Why? Because China plans on sun setting its one child per couple rules and that means explosive population growth. It has long been hypothesized that a growing population is intimately related to long-term GDP growth and economic prosperity. Indeed, the opposite has been proven as well. Failure to grow the population will cause an economic slowdown and even collapse.

China is looking forward on a 100, 150 or even a 200-year plan. Some, may be very alarmed at this, especially those who study Human Habitats and Urban Slums at the United Nations, nevertheless, at the present time China probably does not see another choice. Personally, I would suggest looking into the robotics of the future to insure economic output, even with a decreasing or negative population growth rate. Is the World ready for the future Chinese Super Power, well, I guess it does not matter, as it is going to happen either way.

If I were running China, would I call for increased birth rates from within? Yes, probably, just like presently the US is allowing some 30 million illegal aliens to find their way to citizenship now. Otherwise, the US will end up like Japan, with an aging population and nowhere to go. Europe will be next, same scenario, although immigrants from Eastern Europe and Muslims immigrating, some legally, some not. China is doing what it feels it needs to do, even if many environmentalists are worried that surpassing 10-billion humans on the planet is going to be the death of us all.

Population and Population Census

Population is the total number of people living within a country or a geographical area at a particular time. Population in other words, refers to the total number of children, adults (men and women), youth (boys and girls) living in a given geographical area, which may be a town, village or country, at a specific time.

The study of population is very important for many reasons. Such reasons include the determination of the working population, allocation of resources, the availability of labor, etc. As of 1982, the world population was put at 4.5 billion people. With the world average population growth rate at 1.8%, it was estimated that by the year 2000, the population of the world would have been 6.25 billion. This is not far from the truth as it is about 6,697,254,041, base on world statistics from the site “100people”. In terms of continents, Asia is the most populous continent in the world, followed by Africa, Europe, North America, South America and lastly Australia and the Oceania and Antarctica. In terms of countries, China is the most populous country, then India, United states, Indonesia etc. In Africa, Nigeria is the most populous country.

Population Census

This is the head count of all nationals of a country at a particular time. It refers to the counting by the government of all children, boys, girls, men and women, including the disabled in a country at a given period of time. Censuses are usually taken every 10 years when a series of censuses has been undertaken properly, it becomes easier, using the rate of growth, to estimate the population between the periods of counts. Population census provides information about age, sex, occupation, residence, etc. Let’s take Nigeria foe example. In Nigeria, several population censuses were taken by the government, The census of 1952/53 was given as 3.12 million people. This figure, according to observers at that time was underestimated. Another census conducted in 1962/63, which put the country’s population at 55.670 million. This figure, as of that time, was over inflated. This raised a lot of controversy regarding its reliability and acceptability. In 1973, another count gave a population of 79 million people. This figure was rejected due to double counting and overestimation. In 1991, another population census, was taken. It was given as 88,514,501 people. Since then there has been no ‘true’ census and the current estimate of Nigeria’s population as of 2004 is put ar 120 million, 2008- 140 million, 2010- close to 180 million.
