Our eyes tend to get lots of abuse given the lifestyle that most of us have. Wearing glasses or contact lenses has its pros and cons. For those who prefer less hassle, wearing eyeglasses is the way to go. You can just put them on and take them on anytime you wish. • You won’t have any trouble getting into professions that require perfect eye-sight. Forget getting into the Navy if you don’t have a perfect eye-sight, especially if you want to get into a fighter plane. Even if you managed to get in, you will be relegated to less exciting jobs which do not require perfect vision. Other jobs that require perfect eye-sight include watch and jewelry-making and photography.

We all hate to get that notice in the mail that we have to go for jury duty. There are things you can do to get out of having to serve on a jury. The most important thing that you do is to call each day to see if you need to go in to possibly serve. Brainstorming is a very powerful method for generating lots of ideas very quickly about almost any problem or issue that needs an innovative or creative solution. However, brainstorming is also a very fragile process. It is intended to be a very free flowing non-judgmental exchange and list generator that sparks everyone’s creative fires but at times that is very difficult to achieve in an organized public meeting.

There are lots of distractions in most meeting situations. What another person says more often than not funnels down everyone else’s thinking rather than opening it up. There are almost always dominant and passive personalities in any given meeting situation. People who are normally afraid to speak in a meeting will often shut down completely during a brainstorming session. Only one person at a time can effectively speak in a group meeting and unfortunately that blocks other people from talking. The bigger the group, the bigger the blocking problem. Of course there is always someone in the group who will do and say whatever it takes to please the boss. Once that person speaks up others will be hard pressed to do anything but agree. We tend to think of groups as more effective than each individual but the power of social pressure and conformity is usually counter to the process of brainstorming. We may get a warm group feeling about the social exchange that goes on during a public brainstorming meeting but the reality is it usually stifles creativity.

To help overcome these problems a better method of brainstorming was created called brainwriting. As the name implies, you write out your ideas rather than speak them out. Extensive research and testing has shown that brainwriting generates 40 percent more creative ideas compared to traditional brainstorming. That is a huge increase.

The way it works is before the meeting starts blank forms are made that have the problem definition written at the top and a table below for listing ideas. You need at least one sheet of this form for every person that attends the meeting. There are a lot of different ways to come up with a form that makes sense for the problem you are dealing with but a common procedure is called brainwriting 6-3-5.

The 6-3-5 stands for 6 people, 3 ideas per person in 5 minutes. The table on the form is 3 columns wide with plenty of width for writing down the ideas. Number the columns idea 1, idea 2 and idea 3. Make the table 6 rows down the page for the 6 different people. When the meeting starts you divide the people up into groups of 6. Each person takes a sheet and takes 5 minutes to write out 3 ideas in the first row on the form to help solve the problem statement. Don’t put your name on the sheet. Then you exchange your sheet with someone else. Either give your sheet to the person on your right or put the six sheets in a pile in the middle of the table and randomly take one from the pile. Then take the next 5 minutes to add 3 more ideas to the next row on the new sheet. You can use the ideas that are already on the sheet to stimulate new ideas or create new ideas of your own, whichever works best for you. After doing this for 30 minutes you will have a total of 108 ideas from each group of 6 people.

Hollywood has never been known to produce factually correct movies, from historical events to the intricacies of animal interactions. Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie is a case in point. In Bee Movie, Jerry Seinfeld plays a young bee, male of course, who wants a life beyond the beehive. He joins the “pollen jocks” – the male bees who leave the hive to collect pollen, which the male and female bees in the hive, in their dull jobs, turn into honey.

Real life is quite different. It is the female bees that leave the hive in search of pollen, the males who remain as drones to do the work of the hive. The plot of Bee Movie could have been so much better if this little fact had not been obscured, but that’s a topic for another article.

Let’s get back to the truth about bees. Bees produce honey, which has long been considered nature’s perfect food, and bee pollen products and honey based products are becoming increasingly popular with today’s consumer.

Bee pollen products

Bees (female ones) leave the hive to find pollen from a variety of flowers. When they return, the worker bees (males) take the pollen and pack it into granules, adding honey (otherwise known as nectar), which is used as food by the hive. Humans harvest this bee pollen, otherwise called bee bread or ambrosia.

What’s interesting about bee pollen is that no two batches are alike. The “pollen jockettes” (if I may so term them) bring back pollen from many different sources, and this alters the composition of the pollen.

So, what do bee pollen products do humans make?

Bath and body products enriched with bee pollen are very popular today. They include products for moisturizing, for exfoliation and even shampoo.

Honey based products

Again, honey has long been considered as nature’s perfect food. Indeed, people have been eating honey since practically the beginning of time – it’s even mentioned in the Bible.

Today, people consume honey as a condiment on bread, on ice cream, or even on its own. It’s also used as a sweetener in honey barbecue, and honey mustard is very popular.

All bees produce honey, but only the honey produced by honey bees is edible by humans. Bees create honey by a process I won’t go into here (well, if you must know, they transform nectar (pollen) into honey by regurgitating it), but it is then stored in honeycombs as part of their food supply.

Honey based products include honey, of course, and even mead. Some of today’s beers also use it as a flavoring ingredient. It is also used to make aromatic candles.

Why we need bees

Lots of people find bees annoying and will kill them on sight, which is a pity because all bees perform an important service for mankind. Because they go from flower to flower collecting pollen, they also deposit pollen on these flowers, “pollinating” them, and insuring that flowers themselves survive!

So treat bees well!

First of all, in order to attain the perfect life, we must qualify what we mean by perfect. Perfection might seem at best elusive, at worst impossible in a world where everything we make is ultimately destined for the recycling bin. Even the most carefully crafted objects are prone to break down, and with them go our nerves. Yet there are moments when we glimpse perfection. In fact, perfection is all around us. Look at a brilliant landscape, or a grand tree, or a humble woodland animal. Go smaller and consider how chemicals behave, single atoms, or light cells, always with perfect outcomes? And a new-born, human, flora or fauna, never fails to excite cries of “perfect!”. All these things and millions of others provide clues to the meaning of perfection and prove that it is possible.

When we gaze out at our environment, we see countless examples of lives lived perfectly, from the tiniest cell to the largest mountain ranges (my definition of life includes everything natural). So, what is it about a tree that makes it perfect, or the endless travails of an ant, or the magic of a spider’s web, or the majesty of snow-capped hills? And why is it that, while a million daffodils can achieve perfection in their brief but gloriously golden lives, men and women struggle to achieve it every day?

A scientist who spends their days in the lab will know the joy of working with chemicals that never fail. Mix one chemical with another and a predictable response will occur. Perhaps even the scientist working with these chemicals might take this fact for granted, that chemicals can be relied upon to behave in a certain manner, no matter what. A space physicist building the next rocket to the moon will be aware that, as long as certain fundamental laws are obeyed, they will succeed. If they fail it is down to human error, not a failure of the physical laws. Mathematical equations always lead to the same conclusions. It is a great consolation to humankind to know that the thing we call science is constant, always operating in accord with pre-established laws. This knowledge has led to the incalculable improvements in medicine and communication and agriculture and travel we see around us every day.

But while our scientific endeavours are based on perfect laws, the results are often less than perfect; the manufacture of devices is frequently flawed; the same can be said of medicines and medical procedures; the same with new agricultural techniques; and so on. So, if we rely solely on science to perfect our lives, we will be waiting a long time. And what do we find in other spheres of endeavour? Perhaps philosophy has the answer or religion or art? Does culture have the ability to make us perfect, in and of itself? Perhaps for a while. But philosophy can lead to nihilism. Religion to bigotry. Art and culture to degeneracy. All these things are traps if we ignore one thing, something which is at the same time the simplest aspect of our lives and also the most complex: the basic code of life.

I call the basic code that which writes and governs all the laws which produce everything that we see and experience in the natural world. It is in us as much as it is in a rodent or a weed, or a mountain, or the planet as a whole. It is found right inside us – in our bodies, in our organs, in our genomes – and all around us. The air we breathe, the sunlight we see, the weather we feel. The reason why all animals seem to lead a perfect life perfectly lived is because they are instinctively attuned to the code. This leads me to wonder why, if a lion left undisturbed in its natural environment, is capable of a perfect life perfectly lived, why not men and women?

The answer lies in a faculty that is present in humans but not present in other animals nor indeed in any element belonging to nature; the faculty of rebellion. While every other thing blessed with life silently obeys its intrinsic code, humans have been busy for thousands of years learning how to rebel against it. Humankind alone has the ability to strike out and counter the code which governed its creation in the belief that it could improve its lot by doing so. No chimpanzee ever got up in the morning and decided he needed wheels. No giraffe ever thought their life could be improved by striking up a fire. No elephant decided of its own accord that by applying paint to a cave wall she could produce something both significant and inspiring. Men and women did all these things and more, but while for the most part these developments benefitted our species, they also brought with them another concept absent from the rest of nature, the concept of failure.

Failure is not “things not working out the way you want them”; failure is feeling bad about “things not working out the way you want them”. It’s an emotion like any other and one that needs to managed. And with age and with experience, this feeling stacks up, like a tottering tower ready to collapse at any moment. When people say “forget the past” they mean “forget the failures of the past.”

This would not be a problem in itself except for the fact that we now live in a culture which demands perfection in every respect and at all levels. The higher we set our goals the more likely we are to fail, and the more we succeed the higher we set our goals. It’s a vice-clamp of expectation. The effect of failure influences everything we do. If we use philosophy, art or religion as antidotes to failure then we misuse and abuse those things. The answer is not to stop achieving, stop creating, stop having new ideas, but the opposite. We can achieve more and better if we learn to manage failure.

The key to escaping the vicious cycle of achievement and failure is to understand that failure is not something to be abhorred but embraced; failure is an important part of experimentation. The person who fails the most is the person who has done the most. That being the case it ought to be encouraged. But have we now arrived at a juncture in our social evolution which is so demanding of success and so abhorrent of failure, not only in our manufacture of new devices, but in the way we behave toward each other and even in the way we present ourselves to the world, that we have made it impossible for any member of the human species to find contentment?

What, then, is a blessed state of perfection? A lion that has just feasted on a zebra knows; a camel filling up with water at an oasis in the desert understands; a tree that grows to a degree of impossible complexity that is endlessly beautiful feels it. Perfection is obedience to the code of life. As a species we have forgotten this. And if we pay homage to science first, above the homage due to the code of life on which science is predicated, if we let financial considerations take priority over the whispers of the natural code, then we come unstuck. Three centuries of enlightenment have led us to forget one important thing: that we are already perfect, we are born perfect, and we do not need science to make us any more so.

To achieve a perfect life perfectly lived, then, we must first remember and honour the origin of our existence, and do it every day, be it in the name of God, Gnosis or Gaia. The name we give it is optional. Living by its laws isn’t.

Isn’t this what Matthew meant when he said, “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (5.48). This is perfection not as never failing, but as being part of an eternal plan that will inevitably succeed no matter what.

Creamy Potato Soup

What you need:

• 2 1/2 kg. potatoes, peeled and sliced into bite-sized chunks
• 1/2 kg. diced bacon
• 1 medium carrot, grated
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 1 can evaporated milk
• 2 chicken bouillon cubes
• 6 cups water
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 4 teaspoons minced parsley
• 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1 teaspoon ground mustard
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon red cayenne pepper

Heat a large pot over a campfire then cook bacon in the butter until tender. Set aside. Cook the onions in the bacon grease until tender then set aside with the bacon. Pour 6 cups of water in the pot then add potatoes and chicken bouillon cubes. Bring the mixture to a boil then allow to simmer until potato chunks are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Stir in the carrots and cook until tender. Add the evaporated milk, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, nutmeg, mustard, salt and pepper. Finally, return bacon and onions to the pot and heat 10 minutes more before removing from heat.

Campfire 6-Can Soup

What you need:

• 1 can meaty chilli
• 1 can diced tomatoes
• 1 can tomatoes and green chilli mix
• 1 can kidney beans
• 1 can pinto beans
• 1 can corn
• 1 cup processed cheese
• Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Mix together the meaty chilli, diced tomatoes, tomatoes and green chilli mix, kidney beans, pinto beans and corn in a large pot. Stir and cook over a campfire and bring to a boil. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to simmer to mix the flavors together. While the soup is simmering, dice the processed cheese. Stir the cheese into the pot and stir until it melts and combines with the soup. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and serve immediately!

• Stress your people skills.
