No Premier League Side in the Semi-Final of the Champions League! Is it a Sign of EPL’s Fall?

Firm followers of UEFA competitions and most especially the Champions League, can attest to the reality that there have been EPL sides in the semi-final of the champions league for the previous six seasons i.e. 2003-2009.

In the past six seasons, EPL sides regular in the champions league (Liverpool FC, Manchester United FC, Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC) have all some way featured in the semi-final of the champions league in the past six seasons, which made English and even foreigners marvel at their absence this season, in the semi-final of Europe’s elite club competition.

In 2005, Liverpool (the all red) and Chelsea (the true blues) locked horns in an entertaining semi-final with both sides led by managers who have managed his team for barely two seasons, Liverpool went on to win the encounter, after a closely contested semi-final match. Liverpool eventually emerged triumphant in that year’s Champions league, after defeating Ac-Milan in an epic final which saw one of the greatest comebacks in football history, 3-0 to 3-3 and then victory.

The proceeding year, Arsenal featured in both the Semi-final and final of the Champions league, to mark a turn-around in their footballing history, but were not so lucky to win the trophy after only qualifying for their first final match in the champions league. They battled with Barcelona in that year’s final, i.e. 2006 final, but got beaten by 2 goals to 1, with Jens Lehmann sent off in that match.

In 2007, Liverpool and Chelsea once again were drawn to do battle in the semi-final of the 2006/2007 season. With the first leg drawn to be played at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea had the opportunity of progressing, and they took full advantage of the home factor by defeating Liverpool by a lone goal after a highly contested fixture. At Anfield, Liverpool played with caution while also surging forward in search for the goal that will put them on level terms with Chelsea, luckily for Liverpool the goal came. A low cross from Steven “general” Gerard found an unmarked Daniel Agger, who sliced the ball through the bodies of Chelsea players and bang into the net early in the first half. Liverpool preserved the one goal lead even after 90 minutes until the extra time was over, then it was time for the ultimate decider; penalty kicks, Pepe Reina was the hero of the day as he saved the deciding spot kick to send Liverpool into the final for the second time in three seasons and a replay of 2005 final with AC-Milan, that dispatched Manchester United in the other semi-final clash by 5 goals to 3 on aggregate.

The final was a highly anticipated one, as two of Europe’s power houses in club football go head-to-head to decide the winner of the 2007 Champions League, eventually two Pippo Inzaghi goals, which made him the highest goal scorer in the Champions league, won Ac Milan the trophy for the seventh time in their footballing history.

The following year saw the best from English teams in the Champions League. All four English representatives made it to the quarter final, with three (Liverpool, after ousting Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United) out of the four progressing onto the semi-final, Liverpool were eventually dumped by fellow English team Chelsea. The progression of Chelsea into the final in 2008 was the first time they were playing in the Champions League’s final; they battled with Manchester United for the coveted trophy, matched United strength for strength, skill for skill, technique for technique, but were just unlucky to miss out in the spot kicks, as United went on to win their third and Sir Alex Ferguson’s second UEFA Champions League trophy, which also aided Cristiano Ronaldo in winning the world player of the year award.

The year 2009, saw a different football style displayed by a team. 2009 Champions League was won by Barcelona of Spain, after showing the footballing world how the game should be played; neat defending, accurate passing, and clinical finishing: characterized the play of Barcelona en-route to winning the trophy for the third time in their history, after triumphs in 1992 and 2006.

2010 came with a lot of promise for the English sides, after bright starts from all the sides in their respective groups; Liverpool won its first game against Debrecen at Anfield, by a lone goal scored by Dirk Kuyt, which made him the club’s third highest goal scorer in Europe with 12 goal to his name. Chelsea also won its first game against FC Porto by a lone goal scored Nicolas Anelka, in a dull encounter due to the water soaked pitch.

Manchester United didn’t do badly in its first game; same was the case for Arsenal, all the English representatives representing well to the delight of English stalwarts. Things started becoming shaky as the competition progressed further to its crucial stage. Liverpool were ousted very early in the competition, as they were ousted in the group phase, even before the last group game. The victory of Fiorentina over Olympique Lyonnais in the game before the last, meant Liverpool were forced to the Europa league were they have solace recently, making an impressive run to the semi-final, having not scored lower than three goals on aggregate in the previous rounds, i.e. round of 32, round of 16 and quarter final, which has earned them a clash with Athletico Madrid away in Spain.

Chelsea were next up for elimination, after a partly successful run in the group onto the round of 16. Chelsea had great scares during a few of their group phase games, Athletico Madrid away in Spain was one those, where they had to settle for a 2 all draw after going through Didier Drogba, only to see a Sergio Diego Aguero brace give Athletico the lead, but Drogba proved to be very clinical in finishing when he slotted his second past Athletico’s goal. The most surprising of Chelsea’s group phase result came on the last day of the group. Apoel Nicosia making only its debut in the Champions League held all conquering Chelsea, with a full first team squad, to a 2 all draw at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal had the most impressive group phase performance where they picked up 16 of the 18 available points in a group which consisted of Olympiakos, Standard Liege, and Az Alkmaar, which are low pedigree teams with frequent Champions League due to inability to make it through the preliminary.

Manchester United, I would say, had an indifferent group campaign. Had a great start, but flattered during the crucial mid games, needed the last game to confirm qualification but put threw any doubts into the thrash after a Michael Owen hat-trick cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s opening goal, for VFL Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.

With the progression of three tops teams from England into the round of 16, hopes and expectation were extremely high. The English teams, however, didn’t get the perfect draws, Chelsea were billed to face Inter-Milan, tutored by Jose Mourinho, Manchester United drawn to do battle with 7 times European champions, Ac-Milan, and Arsenal getting a re-match of the 2009 group game against Porto Fc, 2004 winners.

The first legs saw the English teams face real test of strength, skill and technique.

Manchester United were tested for all the mentioned above against Ac-Milan, first in Giuseppe Meazza, San Siro and then in Old Trafford, but then they emerged victorious on both legs, winning 7-2 on aggregate, with Wayne Rooney scoring four of the seven goals, i.e. 2 goals in each leg.

Arsenal had a similar situation, against Fc Porto, the Portuguese representatives giving them a good run for their money, most especially in Portugal, where the first leg was hosted, which Fc Porto won by 2 goals to 1, in a match which Porto’s second goal by Falcao, was a bit controversial, appearing to be an offside goal.

At Emirates stadium, Arsenal showed no mercy, firing 2 goals past Helton in goal for Porto in quick succession, and at half time, it was Arsenal 2 Porto 1. Porto started brightly in the second half of the game, attacking Arsenal from all angles of the pitch. As the game grew, Arsenal became for more confident, and began playing like the Arsenal we are use to watching in league games. Samri Nasri threw the Emirates into ecstasy, when he dribbled past three Porto defenders and slotted past helpless Helton, who tried to rush out to prevent the goal, but all to no avail. Super sub, Emmanuel Eboue, came on minutes later and sealed the victory, with a clean finish, after he outran the Porto defenders and was set up by Andre Arshavin, with only the keeper to beat, he rounded him neatly before netting Arsenal’s four to cap a fine performance from truly smoking gunners. Nicklas Bendtner, who had earlier netted 2 superb strikes, added a third to mark his first hat trick in his Arsenal career.

It wasn’t a bed of roses for Chelsea neither, as they had to suffer defeats in the hands of Inter-Milan on both legs, which put paid to their Champions League campaign. At the magnificent Giuseppe Meazza, Inter tested Chelsea for wits, work rate and technique, as both teams played out their lives to progress in the competition. Chelsea partly outplayed, but all the “ball possession” could not fetch them the win which they set out to achieve. The ball possession favoured Chelsea in the first leg match, but these were not translated into goals neither were they translated in the goal attempt, shot-on-goal, and so on. Of all the teams which started European campaign in September, Liverpool can be deduced to be the most disappointing of all, due to the fact that it was knocked out in the group phase.

Presently, there are only two English teams in European competition, Liverpool FC and Fulham FC and they both have interesting fixtures in the semi-final, having to face Athletico Madrid and Hamburg, respectively.

There is the possibility of an all English Europa league final, a feat which has not been achieved for over 6 seasons.

The absence of premier league teams In the semi-final of the champions league, in my own estimation, does not connote the fall of the premier league, rather the sole reason is the reality that we have come to face, which is the fact that teams form other countries have sat down and reviewed the methods of English teams, which they have applied, and it has worked magically and very effectively too.

English teams were neither totally outclassed, outpowered nor outplayed, but rather the element of luck was against them, and also the English teams have had a good run in the past, so let other teams enjoy same, so people won’t say the Champions league is an English competition. The English teams will rise up to take what’s rightfully theirs, which is the prestige it has earned over the years, a prestige which in my estimation, is in jeopardy considering the inability of making it to the semi-final of Europe’s elite club competition.

Upon this I settle, the absence of English teams in the semi-final of the champions league is by no means equal to the fall of the premier league, and besides which other league is so unpredictable as the premier league? A league where any team can beat any team, home or away; name the league.

Big Business is No Help to Ghana’s Grassroots Engineering Enterprises

Suame Magazine in Kumasi is Ghana’s largest informal industrial area and its main vehicles repair centre. It is home to thousands of small engineering workshops that offer a wide range of basic repair and manufacturing facilities. From the opening of the Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit (ITTU) in 1980, many efforts were made to forge links with large formal-sector businesses and international companies but with little success. Kwame Main reviewed progress on a visit to Suame in 1996.

When Kwame asked about the progress of his work Stephen said that the collapse of Yugoslavia had robbed him of his best customer, the Tomos motorcycle assembly plant. It was the Tomos plant in Kumasi that had provided GAMATCO with regular orders for hundreds of gear wheels and chain sprocket wheels for new production. Now GAMATCO was reduced to making replacement parts for imported Japanese motorcycles. It was for this reason that he was keen to introduce new products like the gear-generating attachment.

Kwame asked if any other assembly plant had shown interest in buying parts locally, but Stephen replied that none had approached him or anyone else he knew in the magazine. Kwame recalled that when the participants of the first engineering drawing course had visited the Neoplan bus assembly plant a year before, some collaboration with the magazine had been suggested. Stephen said that as far as he knew nothing had happened since. It seemed that multinational corporations had little interest in assisting grassroots industries. ‘It’s up to us to help ourselves,’ added Stephen, and Kwame had to agree.

‘What’s new here?’ Kwame asked. ‘Have you seen the big casting Edward Opare has made?’ replied Stephen. The two engineers walked around the ITTU to where the little Akuapem chief technician had established his foundry. They found the proprietor and his assistant fettling a casting that appeared to be a replacement part for a large earth moving machine.

‘It was ordered by the British contractor on the Tamale road,’ Edward explained. ‘But it must weigh over a hundred kilograms,’ said Kwame, ‘How did you cast it with a furnace of only sixty kilograms capacity?’ ‘I fired up my furnace and the ITTU furnace in parallel,’ Edward replied, ‘Then we poured the cast iron from both furnaces together.’

‘Well done!’ Kwame said, impressed by his colleague’s resourcefulness.

Kwame knew from his experience with GRID in Tema, where they had produced many replacement parts for water pumps for the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC), that such efforts can save months of delay in ordering spare parts from manufacturers overseas. When they needed a replacement part in a hurry, big foreign firms were eager enough to take advantage of local technical capability. He wondered aloud to his companions why foreign companies weren’t more interested in helping to establish such capabilities.

How to Find Success in Business, No Matter What Business You Are In

After thirty-five years of running my company, Mid-Hudson Marketing, I’ve come to realize a few truths about what brings success in business. Regardless of what business you are in, if you give the clients what they want, the clients will be happy. And happy clients come back. They also refer other clients to you.

Now, you would think that in a marketing business, a client would come to me in order to bring him business. But, ironically, when a client comes to me for marketing services, there is a lot more to what the client wants than is obvious on the surface. Clients need confidantes. Clients need friends. Clients need reliable helpers to do the things they themselves cannot do, and to do them well. Clients need dependable business partners they can lean on in times of need to provide them with guidance and advice. Clients need all of this but do not want to be overcharged for it. And clients need these things exactly when they need them, at the precise moment they ask for them, without having to wait their turn. After all, clients are busy people with many important tasks at hand including making a success of their own businesses. It is a rare client that recognizes that you and he or she have that in common.

No, clients by definition are usually quite selfish with only their own concerns in mind. When they call you, they need you. Otherwise, they don’t call. Of course, in the present state of the economy, getting a call from a client in need should be regarded as a blessing if you are running a business. This is your bread and butter. And furthermore, the reason they can be excused from their myopic vision is that they are paying you to help them. Not the other way around.

Never mind that they may be interrupting you from serving the needs of other important clients whose calls may have come in first. It is an exercise in tact and diplomacy that provides you with the right things to say to satisfy the demands of all clients within the time constraints given. No single client wants to be told that he must wait, and all deserve your very best efforts to perform whatever it is they expect of you.

Luckily, the laws of probability usually dole out these calls in a rather random fashion so you are not overwhelmed with immediate urgency that is impossible to deliver on. And in a business like marketing, there are a multitude of different tasks clients may need, all requiring different skills, allotments of time, and expectations for completion.

And of course, not all projects come in as phone calls. Many come in as emails in today’s world. But in either case, an immediate reply is the most important course of action for you as business owner, to provide the solution each is looking for. I find that most clients just want to know that they are important to you and that you are grateful for their call, and that you intend to address their requests right away. This is usually accomplished by a prompt call back or email reply confirming receipt of their message and how you intend to fulfill what they need. I also always promise to confirm when the job is completed. Having done this, my stress level for the moment is reduced because the immediacy of the demand has been taken care of. However, as anyone running a business knows, chronic stress is part of being successful, since it drives us to do the work the clients ask for, as quickly and expertly as possible!

Next step for the business owner is the prioritization of tasks at hand. I approach this by figuring out how many steps there are in the process, how long each will take and how soon I can get them done while working on a multitude of jobs simultaneously. For the small business owner, or people who run their businesses single-handedly (like me), this usually means being a workaholic and working morning, noon and night, 24/7. That is not an exaggeration. I work every moment I can, subtracting out time for personal hygiene, eating, sleeping, and an hour of daily exercise every day, without fail! Of course, I admit I am very robotic about everything in my life which serves me well in business. The reason is that I can multi-task easily without breaking my concentration from the most important application of my attention.

An example would be answering the phone with my standard greeting without missing a beat, while using any one of my many software programs to design, write, produce, enhance or convert any number of the many jobs I juggle on a daily basis. People often comment that I sound like a recording. We laugh about that and move on. Not only is my predictability beneficial for my business, it is appreciated by my clients who are able to reach me on one or two rings without having to wade through the muck and mire of phone prompts or receptionists to try to speak to me directly. Sure, they sometimes get my voice mail but I always call right back and never keep them waiting.

I must reveal, though, that prior to a couple of years ago, when I maintained a formal business suite of offices in the largest city nearby, my working hours were quite different. Time to commute even on the worst days in winter ate up a good chunk of my availability to keep plowing through my workload. I used to believe that such time was well spent… as a “creative pause,” as one German professor of music I had at Bard College used to say. Time to reflect, plan strategy, get an overview of business as a whole. Now, however, since I was prescient enough to realize that closing that overhead-heavy office I had taken pride in for a 35-year career was an unaffordable luxury in today’s economy and moving home was the best alternative for many reasons, my time is much better appropriated.

First of all, I now have a life! How, you may ask, can I possibly have a life if I work 24/7?!! Well, since I love what I do for a living, I definitely enjoy working from home. Here are the major differences:

  • Instead of getting up at 4 a.m. to get dressed to the business hilt, reading several newspapers while eating breakfast and driving an hour to work, I now get up at 8:15 a.m. and run up and down my staircase for exercise for 20 minutes (2500 steps in all!) and make a small breakfast I eat as I check my email in my comfy office off my dining room wearing my shorts, a t-shirt and socks. My work day usually begins about 9 a.m. which is the norm for the majority of office workers.
  • Instead of having to wear high heels while driving to and from occasional client meetings which also killed a good portion of the day (not to mention my feet!), I now stay at home and avoid meeting anyone altogether. I am totally accessible by email and phone and seeing me in person is unnecessary in this day and age of Internet access and video-conferencing.
  • Instead of leaving the office late in a rat-race-paced drive home to cook supper after having stopped at the grocery store, a gas station and navigated through the occasional traffic jam and subsequent longer-than-usual detour, I now take a twenty-minute walk with my husband around 4:30 every day and after continuing to work until 6:30, begin making supper after a productive 9-hour day. I am lucky to have a retired husband/life partner who now does all the shopping.
  • Instead of ending my day at 9:30 p.m. so I can try to get enough sleep to wake up at 4 and start all over again, I now get to watch the end of the Yankee game most nights if they’re still playing around 10 p.m. which is when I stop working after dinner to enjoy a little TV exposure and eat an apple. Bedtime for the robot is now about midnight, giving me about 8 hours of sleep each night vs. my previous 5.5 hour average. That in itself has given me back my life!

But lots of things have changed in business since the economic downturn. It is not a surprise to hear of people working from home. Having an office was wonderful for many years when people would come in for frequent conferences or to check proofs. There was a time when I spent entire days doing high quality on-site photography, sometimes from helicopters, using gyroscopes and expensive rented long lenses while flying through now forbidden air space over Manhattan! Times have changed and my industry with it. We’ve become an online culture with everything accessible through affordable high quality digital photography and emailed PDF proofs. People are more conservative about business expenses than they ever were and the cost of gasoline and of everything has curtailed how we all do business. And, as a result, how much we charge has become an issue of sensitivity as well.

Having arrived at a place in my life where money is no longer a matter of life or death, sink or swim, I am fortunate to have the freedom to negotiate agreeable rates with long-term clients I respect who have expressed anxiety over loss of revenue due to the business reduction everyone has felt. Once you hit a certain age, you realize that life does not go on forever and it is more important to live life for the pleasure it can bring than for some arbitrary dollar figure to which you once may have aspired. Since my house and cars are all paid for and I have the security of some relatively satisfactory investments, it is more important to me to have clients who seek my intelligence and skills, and keep me busy with interesting work, than to try to amass a fortune doing it. I am also lucky (and have been for the bulk of my career) that I don’t ever have to look for work. It just comes in as it always has from clients with whom I’ve been working for most of my life. Those clients refer others. And, there are always new clients who find me through my website. Yes, my office was a beautiful representation of my polished business image, my brand…but I have achieved the same thing through my website, at a greatly reduced cost!

I have written this article, which is really more of a glimpse into my life, for the purpose of sharing the kinds of things that bring success. Not so much for the specific information, but for the attitudinal and philosophical truths that shape a person’s life. Always putting the client first; doing the best work you possibly can; respect for the client’s needs and timeframe; being frugal with spending; and above all, being fair in every way; these are the ways I’ve found success in my life. It doesn’t take a lot to make me happy, thank goodness. Not being destitute, having a perfectly ripe avocado available, a good apple, my favorite balsamic vinegar, skim milk, oats, walnuts, my Taster’s Choice decaf. These are things that make me happy. And, a kind word from a happy client now and then! Do I mind working entire holiday weekends keeping up with client deadlines and work goals? Not at all. I thrive on it. And this I would define as success in business.

Plea Bargains – No Bargain For Anyone?

Plea Bargains. A good deal for someone who is guilty?

A good deal for the state as plea bargains avoid an expensive trial?

Here are some plea bargains offered vs. actual sentences meted out in that I became personally aware of. I am omitting the last names of those mentioned.

Albert -sexual assault; was offered a plea bargain of reducing the felony to a misdemeanor, no mandated sex offender treatment, no annual registering as a sex offender, and a jail term of 4 to 6 months. He refused, saying, “I’m not guilty”. After 2 trials, (the jury deadlocked in the first trial-l0 for innocent; 2 undecided), the second jury convicted him and he was sentenced to 7-1/2 to 15 years.

Michael, sexual assault; was offered a plea bargain of 1 year with the stipulation that he had to complete sex offender treatment. He refused, went to trial, and is serving 2 consecutive sentences of 3-1/2-7 years, (i.e. a possibility of 15 years, total.).

Carl, sexual assault; was offered 2-6 years as a plea bargain. He refused, claiming innocence; was convicted and sentenced to 7-1/2 to 15 years plus 6-12 years, suspended, if good behavior under the first sentence.

Are these plea bargains fair to the defendant? Are they fair to the victim? Are they fair to the public?

In New Hampshire, case law governs plea bargains. “…(They) have been openly acknowledged as a proper part of the criminal process since 1970, even though they existed…..since time immemorial.” (State vs. Manoly., 1970) This is also the case in virtually all other states.

Negotiated pleas and plea bargains are used by both defendants and prosecutors. Why?

Obviously, if a plea can be negotiated satisfactorily, the expense of a trial can be avoided.

If the crime has traumatized a victim, a trial sometimes further exacerbates that trauma. Some victims refuse to testify, or dread the thought of facing their perpetrator again. Think-if you were brutally raped, or beaten, or terrorized for hours, pistol whipped, etc., how would you feel going through a trial for hours or days, seeing the person who offended you? Would you be able to face the unrelenting questioning by attorneys, about the incident, about your personal life-and with the public looking on-with the possibility of the details in the newspaper and on TV?

So, would you be thankful that a plea bargain was struck, and that the person who committed a crime would be punished without any further involvement by you?

Or, on the other hand: What if you were willing to testify against this person and you wanted to see him or her receive the full penalty under the law, and then the state offered a plea bargain? What if that sentence could have been 10 to 20 years if he/she was convicted by a jury, and the plea bargain was 2 to 4 years? Would you feel cheated? Would the public feel cheated, thinking this person should have had the full weight of the law applied, and should not have been able to receive a shorter sentence just for pleading guilty?

In anticipation of this article, I asked an inmate in Concord Men’s Prison how he felt about plea bargains. (He had refused one in his case, and had been sentenced to triple the plea bargain.) He said, “You are being punished for exercising your right to a trial, if you are offered a plea bargain of 2 years, and they tell you that you will get up to 20 years if you lose at your trial.” In other words, `If you insist that you have a right to trial, we will convict you and give you twice, three times, etc. more years in jail than if you take our offer.’

Atty. Michael Skibbie, former head of the Public Defender’s Office in Concord. NH, stated the following to a legislative committee:

“The overwhelming majority of cases in this country and in New Hampshire are resolved by plea, not by trial. Nationally 80 or 90% of felony cases are resolved by plea.” “Fewer than 10% of the felony cases that we (Public Defender) handle actually go to a jury trial.”

He went on to explain why this happens, including the difficulty of trying to predict how a jury would react to the evidence, the defendant and the alleged victim. He said, “I have won cases that I was sure I’d lose, and I’ve lost cases that I was sure that I would win. And most experienced criminal defense lawyers would tell you the same.” And prosecutors could say the same. “Obviously, both sides are taking a risk when they go to trial.”

I mentioned above that settling a case by plea bargain avoids huge expenses. Atty. Skibbie also stated how plea bargains relieve the court of a monumental amount of cases. Imagine-if 90% of felony cases are being plea bargained now and that stopped! If you think the court system is clogged now with backlogged cases, (which it is), think of what it would be like with 9 fold more cases!

He further commented about the prosecution’s justification of higher sentences if the defendant insisted on a trial and then was convicted. One reason is the effect the trial has on victims and other civilian witnesses. Likewise, the defendant’s attorney is motivated to negotiate a plea as “…that typically is going to be either a modification of charges, a recommendation of a sentence that the defendant is going to perceive as something better than he or she would get after trial, or both.” He said that in sex cases, there are additional factors for both sides to motivate plea bargaining.

“First, from a prosecutor’s perspective, these cases are associated with a greater uncertainty….” “They are hard cases for both sides. Even when the prosecutors get convictions, the reversal rate is higher than any other cases.” From the defense side, “The sentences upon conviction, after trial, are very, very high. If you are a 20 year old male, and you are facing potentially 20 years in prison if you lose this trial, there are a lot of people who think that’s the end of their life -to be in their 40’s.”

Referring to the difficulties of the victim having to talk about embarrassing and private matters during sex offense trials, he said, “But on the other hand, there is probably nothing that is harder (for the defendant) to admit in a public courtroom than a sex offense”, (in the case of a plea bargain).

Another big factor in sexual assault cases, is the potential for the defendant having to register every year for the rest of his/her life as a sex offender. If the prosecuting attorney offers a plea bargain which still mandates this provision, many defendants agonize about agreeing to the plea. Some say `no’, preferring to take their chances at trial. This `registration aspect’ is unique to sex offenses. If you rob a bank, brutally assault someone, kidnap a child, or even hold the police `at bay’ with an assault rifle, you may `cop a plea’, and when you have served your time, and are released, you’re `through’ with the system. There’s no registration every year at the police station and no easy way for the public to discover that you had been incarcerated for committing a felony.

If you move to a different community or state, you can virtually become anonymous as far as your past crime is concerned.

Would you accept a plea bargain? Would it be an easy decision for you? Atty. Skibbie put it quite succinctly: In a pleas bargain, “you’re talking about 5 years in prison vs. 10 years in prison-or 7 years in prison vs. 20 years in prison.”

“It’s very, very hard to make a decision to go into prison, even for a relatively very short period of time.”

And if you’re innocent? Say they offer you two years as a plea bargain, with a possible 20 if you lose at trial. Do you forget that you’re innocent, and accept the plea, because you have heard that justice is not always fair, and you may be wrongly convicted?

I’ll leave you with two more cases-actual cases in New Hampshire. These are direct quotes from the convicted.

(one) “I’ve been an inmate…since 1995. The day my trial began, I was offered a plea bargain of 4 years….the bargain was only on the table until the victim took the stand. Because I was innocent, I went to trial…” “I was convicted on 7 of the 12 counts. The judge sentenced me to 18-1/2 to 37 years, with 14 to 28 more years deferred. I could conceivably serve a maximum of 65 years.” “If I was guilty, I would have easily taken the plea, completed the sex offender’s (treatment) program, and as of today, I would be living back in the community.”

(another) “The prosecutor offered me a 5 year prison sentence…(as a plea).” “I declined… knowing my innocence (and)…wanted to clear my name (at trial).” “On January 30th, I was found guilty.” “Thejudge sentenced me to 33-1/2 to 67 years.”

It’s difficult to make comments on these specific cases unless one has read more about those cases. But they are all examples of our plea bargain system. That the state could offer such a small sentence under a plea, and then hand down such a long sentence if the case went to trial,

Is any crime less heinous because the perpetrator agrees to a plea bargain? If the prosecutor is certain the accused is guilty, is he doing a disservice to society by offering that offender a very light sentence vs a much stiffer sentence upon conviction by a jury?

The plea bargain system is indeed an interesting aspect of criminal justice, and one, I think, which may never truly be fair to all or even understood.

My New iPad: A User’s Guide Book Review – No Starch Press Book

Wallace Wang, best seller of My New Mac and My New iPhone for the No Starch Press publisher has written a new book detailing everything you need to know about the iPad in a book called “My New iPad: A User’s Guide.” No Starch Press provided a reviewer’s copy of “My New iPad: A User’s Guide” for this review.

“My New iPad: A User’s Guide” includes seven chapters including: basic training; customizing your iPad; getting on the Internet; sharing data with your iPad; video, music, and eBooks; organizing yourself and additional tips. Each chapter is small and comes in easily consumable chunks of information that can instantly help new users complete a certain task with easy to follow step by step instructions.

The first chapter called “Basic Training” teaches you how to turn on and off the iPad, what the various buttons and slides perform and how to use and customize the virtual keyboard. Apple changed the Screen Location Lock since the book was published so information has changed since the publish date resulting in incorrect information.

“Customizing Your iPad” is the second chapter that details how to customize your home screen, set the date and time, restoring and resetting your iPad and installing and uninstalling iPad apps.

The third chapter called “Getting on the Internet” shows how to use the email client and web browser called Safari including some intermediate information such as how to use bookmarks and automatically fill out forms with Safari.

If you do not know how to transfer content to your iPad, chapter four is perfect for you. “Sharing Data with Your iPad” shows how to synchronize with iTunes to transfer media such as photos, movies, TV shows and even podcasts. The chapter further goes on to show steps to synch your eBooks, Audio Books, Contacts, Appointments, Mail, Notes, Bookmarks and even iTunes University Courses. The book is light on how to actually configure Yahoo! or Google services with your iPad however.

The next chapter focuses on content consumption on the iPad and it titled “Video, Music and eBooks”. This chapter shows you how to watch your photos to listen to your music to watching YouTube videos.

Chapter six focuses on how to use the iPad to keep yourself organized using included iPad apps and is called “Organizing Yourself.”

Finally, the last chapter called “Additional Tips” provides some additional miscellaneous tips including how to update the iOS or use foreign languages. This last chapter also includes a section called “Best iPad Apps” which includes some good apps but is dated. To keep up with the best iPad apps, you should watch for articles that continually are updated such as the Gizmos for Geeks Favorite iPad Apps monthly updated list.

I started and finished “My New iPad: A User’s Guide” in one afternoon. The book is geared towards new users of not only the iPad device but of Apple’s iOS devices including iPod Touch and iPhones and definitely not towards advanced user’s of the iOS. For example, this book would be ideal for my parents since they have never used an iOS device, but I found the book way to simplistic to really become engaged.

My Wife Has No Desire For Sex – Help!

Husband, what about your sex-life (or, as some guys say, “lack of sex life”)?

Does your wife seemingly have little to no desire for sex? Consider this man’s note:

“Help! For several years now, my wife has had virtually no desire for sex. At the beginning, things were great in the sex department but now, any sex we have is like she’s doing me a favor. And honestly, I’ve just about reached the point where I’m done with her. If she’d just be more sexual, I’d be happy with her because outside of sex, she’s a great woman. But, I’m just not the kind of guy who can go without sex for weeks or months at a time. Is there any hope for a man in my situation or should I just bring what could have been a really great marriage to an end?”

Now, I know for a fact that this man’s sexless plight is not an isolated case…that in fact, there are a LOT of men in the same situation. So, let’s consider this interesting question…

What does it take for a wife to desire sex with her husband?

Well, there are a whole litany of factors that impact a woman’s desire for sex. Let’s explore four of them:

1. How a wife feels about sex is largely dependent upon how her husband feels about her outside the realm of sex. Any time you find a husband whose only interest in his wife is sexual, you WILL find a wife who is NON-sexual — or one who soon will be.

So, if a man wants his wife to have a greater interest in sex, then the first thing HE should do is start having a greater interest in his wife as a person. Of course, his interest must be genuine and sincere.

2. In order for a wife to feel sexual desire, she must first GENERATE fun, exciting, positive, and sexy thoughts in her mind so that she INVOKES sexual anticipation within herself.

But, do you know, there are a lot of important and pressing responsibilities and matters that crowd into a wife’s mind…responsibilities and matters that crowd out all her fun, exciting, positive, and sexy thoughts.

So, the second thing a man must do if he wants his wife to desire sex more is help her in strategic ways so that she has the time, space, motivation, and energy to generate the kinds of thoughts that invoke sexual desire. This can mean all kinds of things from helping out around the house and with the kids to taking your wife to inspiring places that help her access her intimate side.

Now, as obvious and common-sense as this may seem, there is a world-full of husbands who are busy doing their own independent thing and who are leaving all the home / family / children responsibilities up to their wife which means she’s GENERATING sad, boring, negative, and NON-sexual thoughts in her mind so that she INVOKES a complete loss of sexual desire within herself.

Let me put this another way…it takes two to have great sex…it takes two to have a great marriage…it takes two to handle the responsibilities of a home / family / children and men who have a great sex life ALWAYS remember that.

3. In order for a wife to feel sexual desire, she must have a husband who is a MAN! This is where many men blow it. Sure, they are man enough outside of their home / marriage but as soon as they walk through the front door of their house, they turn into a soft, passive, apologetic, push-over that their wife bosses around, uses, and abuses…and their wife feels no desire for them.

These are the kind of men who provide for their family AND do EVERYTHING for their wife / home / children. And, while they are doing EVERYTHING, their wife sits around bored, unhappy, and non-sexual.

A MAN contributes to the marriage “team” that he’s a part of and he demands that his wife contribute too. He makes sure everyone on the “team” is putting forth concerted effort to make the marriage the best that it can be — starting with himself.

A MAN is open and positive about sex. He mingles fun, flirty, sexy talk into his chats and conversations with his wife. Sometimes, he even describes to his wife a deeply connected and highly sexual encounter he plans to have with her in the future so that she has something to anticipate. Of course, a MAN is balanced…his conversations with his wife have plenty of meaningful substance to them that’s well outside the realm of sexuality. Without the substance, a wife will come to think of her husband as shallow and sexually-needy and be turned-off by him.

A MAN is direct about what he wants from his wife sexually. There are plenty of men who are unhappy with their wife and their intimate life and yet, they’ve NEVER told their wife what it is that they want from her. So, a MAN tells his wife what he wants and helps her find a way to give that to him in a way that works for her too.

Think about it…how many times have you wanted to have a fun and sexual evening with your wife? Now, contrast that with this question…how many times you’ve asked your wife to sit down with you and plan out a fun and sexual evening — one that both of you can enjoy?

4. Many a wife has lost her desire for sex simply because of too much frustration and not enough fulfillment in the realm of sex. Certainly, their husband is capable of satisfying them but he hasn’t put enough planning, variety, or time into lovemaking to satisfy his wife. So, the fourth thing a man must do if he wants to ramp up his wife’s interest in sex is put more planning, variety, and time into making love.

Too many times, husbands initiate sex with their wife and 10 – 15 minutes later, they are done. Well, in 10 – 15 minutes, a wife hasn’t even had enough time to clear her mind let alone get into having sex. In 10 – 15 minutes, neither the man or the wife has had time to really connect emotionally. 10 – 15 minutes is NOT enough time to do something different than what you did all the other times before…which means you did the same thing you did the last time you made love with your wife…which means you are BORING…you’re a lousy lover…and your wife will soon enough start AVOIDING sex with you. The point is, walking into your bedroom, jumping in bed, engaging in sex, and cleaning up 10 – 15 minutes later is nothing more than a nuisance, irritation, and frustration to your wife.

For most men, if they did nothing more than just give their wife enough time to get out of her negative thoughts and feelings and time to associate into positive, sexual thoughts and pleasurable feelings they’d instantly become better lovers.

Now, drawing from the four points made above, here are two simple ideas that a man can implement within his own marriage:

* Plan out a day that’s entirely focused on you “spoiling” your wife. For an entire day, wait on your wife and serve her in ways that she enjoys and appreciates. If she likes breakfast, serve her breakfast in bed. For dinner, grill her up a nice steak. During the day, take her to a nice art exhibition and then take her shopping. Most importantly, make sure you tell her at least a week in advance what you’re going to do for her so that she has a week to enjoy the pleasure of anticipation.

* Plan out in detail an evening of fun and sex…something that’s definitely NON-routine…for you and your wife and “treat” your wife to that evening. Then, ask her to do the same and “treat” you to a evening of fun and sex that is a creation of her amazing mind.

How to "Cook" Ramen Noodles With No Heat

Most people think that you need hot water to cook Ramen noodles. For years now, I have eaten Ramen noodles on camping trips, car trips, and many other times when I have been away from a heat source.

Ramen noodles normally take 3 minutes to cook. The directions say that you simply add the package of noodles into at least two cups of boiling water, and you will be ready to eat within 3 minutes.

For Ramen noodles to be “cooked”, they need to fully absorb the water until they are soft. Heat helps to expedite this process, but it is by no means absolutely necessary. Ramen noodles can absorb cold water just as easily as hot water. The main difference is that it takes longer. Here’s a short guide to help you cook your Ramen noodles with no heat:

1. Find a container that holds a minimum of 12 or 16 ounces of water.

2. Empty the packet of noodles into the container

3. Fill the container with cold water

4. Wait 30 minutes

5. Mix in the seasoning

6. Enjoy!

That’s it. Pretty simple, right? I have found that 30 minutes is a good amount of time for the noodles to become fully soft. Sometimes I might wait up to an hour. The length of time can vary depending on the temperature of the water. If it is extremely cold, it will take longer than if it is lukewarm. Just check on it from time to time if you are in a hurry.

Of course, this whole method presumes that you don’t mind eating cold noodles, but I have found that they are just as tasty when they are cold as when they are hot.
