There are many ways to bet on a football match. Increased competition and the ability to lay bets on Betfair have made it possible to take the same bet at different prices depending on the market.

The most obvious one is the -0.5 Asian Handicap (AH) and the straight win on the 1X2 market. You are betting on exactly the same thing if you take these bets. As the margin is lower on the AH, its almost always best to take the AH. It baffles me why some bookmakers put the bets adjacent on a coupon with different prices.

A draw no bet is the same as an AH of +0. Again, the AH is usually the best. However, if one team is highly backed on the AH the odds may drop and betting on the draw no bet is better value.

Unders/ overs, goal line and total goals are sometimes the same. There’s one bookmaker I know that offers all three of these on the same coupon but sometimes at different prices. I’ve seen 3 or more goals on the total goals market priced better than the overs on a goal line of 2.5. They are exactly the same bet.

An X2 double chance is the same as laying the home win on Betfair. As Betfair operates with a margin of 2.5% (5% commission but you will on average lose half), its going to always be better to lay the bet on Betfair than taking the bet on X2. Some double chance bets are the same as the AH. Take the best odds.

A +1 European Handicap is exactly the same as a +0.5 Asian Handicap, which is exactly the same as laying the team on the 1X2 market. I’ve seen times when European Handicap has offered the best value. As this market is the smallest, the prices don’t move if a bookie gets in wrong. I once found an arbitrage that paid 10% using a European Handicap. The price didn’t move at all because not many people bet on it.

No first goal scorer is almost the same as 0-0. NFGS is slightly better as own goals do not count. It doesn’t happen often but as these markets pay the same odds, its best to go with the NFGS bet. Djimi Traore scored an own goal when Liverpool played Burnley in the 2004/2005 FA Cup. Liverpool lost the game 1-0. PSV scored an own goal and lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the Champions league the same season. Its rare but it does happen.

I could go on but I expect you to get the message now. Next time you are placing a bet on a soccer match it could pay to just check the odds on other markets.

This morning is another blissfully wonderful powder day at Mammoth Mountain, my home ski resort. Mammoth Mountain just got 62-88″ of fresh powder over its already generous snow base. Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort now boasts a snow base of 12.5-19 feet.

Most Mammoth Mountain skiers know it gets tons of snow, but they are a little in the dark as to how to avoid crowds on the mountain after a big dump.

I have for you 10 tips, tricks and tactics I use to avoid waiting in really any lift lines when I ski Mammoth Mountain my 80+ days per year:

1) Ski midweek if possible. Mammoth Mountain Ski resort is visited most on weekends by hoards of Mammoth devotees from Southern California that have regular jobs and work during the week. Wednesday is my favorite day because you can most always ski right into any chair.

2) Get to the mountain early on weekends. The first hour is the best hour on weekends. I like to be standing in line when they open the chairs at 8:20-8:30 am. You can easily ski right into the chair for the first hour before the rest of the Mammoth devotees arrive.

3) Avoid the bottom of the mountain once you get there. Usually the biggest lift lines are at the bottom on chairs 2, 10, 8, 16, and the Village Gondola. Stay on chairs 3 and 5, or 22 and 23 to find smaller lift lines. The gondola is more crowded than chairs 22 and 23, which serve similar terrain.

4) Move around to avoid lift lines. My daughter and I ski most every Sunday together. We are able to move around the mountain and avoid all lift lines even on a Sunday. Learn which sequence of chairs works best for you. With the popularity of the Village Gondola, I stick nearer to the Main Lodge where there are less people these days.

5) Be prepared for wind and snow at all times. Mammoth Mountain has a history of underestimating the wind. If the website says it is calm or a “Slight breeze” that means nothing. Several days ago they said the winds were calm when they later closed the mountain due to wind. Check local wind gauges like the one on chair 1 for the accurate wind speed so you can dress appropriately. Wind chill is for real at Mammoth Mountain’s high altitudes.

6) Mammoth creates its own microclimate. Two days ago, I left my home 40 miles from Mammoth, and it was clear and sunny. The sun was out until I turned on the turn off to Mammoth Lakes. There I saw a cloud around the town and mountain. I continued to my favorite parking lot, and when I got out of my car and it was snowing. It snowed all day while I was skiing. And when I drove out of town, it became sunny out by Hwy 395 again. When you ski Mammoth Mountain you need to be prepared for any type of weather because you are likely to experience it.

7) Chairs 25 and 12 are perfect for intermediates, and less crowded than most.

8) Experts will love chairs 22 and 23, which serve the steepest terrain, and rarely have lift lines.

9) Wear a Fleece balaclava, or carry one in your pocket at all times. I can’t tell you how many times I thought I did not need face protection, only to do one run and feel like my face was going to freeze. By having a fleece balaclava in my pocket, I can put it on while riding the next chair, and not have to return to my locker or car to have the right gear.

10) Wear a helmet. You can never predict what will happen to you, or when you will need you helmet. It takes only an impact of 11 mph to be fatal when bodies collide with each other or a stationary object.

This question was posed on an archery forum the other day, and it got me thinking. The poster on the forum said, “why should I go to an archery range over a gun range, and what’s the difference?” I have personally shot at both so I know my own particular reasons. What would be some reasons that you should consider going to an archery range over a gun range?

I have to start by saying that if you specifically want to shoot a gun then you should head straight for the gun range. Shooting arrows and shooting bullets are similar, but they are also extremely different. If you are on the fence, however, then there are a few things that I believe sets this experience apart.

Line: I cannot speak for all gun ranges, because they all vary in size, but at the archery range, you should not expect a line. Most ranges will have ample open space for shooters and their archery bows. The range that I go to has 8 lanes. During the week, you can shoot as long as you want. Gun ranges tend to have reservation policies, or they will have lines.

Cost: Depending on what type of shooting you are doing, gun ranges can charge anywhere from $15-20 just to get in the door — per hour. After that, you have to pay for their ammo and gun rentals. This price can add up quickly. Most archery ranges charge anywhere from 15-25 for the archery experience. This training includes everything that you need hit the range. $25 should get you the rental of all of the equipment that you need as well as a 1 hour lesson with trained staff.

Service: I can only speak to my local ranges service. At my range, I can be sure that I will always get the coaching and the attention that I need. When ever I have a technical question, it gets quickly addressed. If you are looking for a local archery range, then I would suggest using a website like Yelp before you head over. This is how I found my range, and I can say that I am satisfied with my choice.

KId friendly: This is not an intimidating spot. When you shoot your archery bow on most ranges, you will not need to worry about recoil, ear plugs, or safety goggles. Shooters at a gun range typically have to be over 18, and some even require that the shooters be over 21. Most archery ranges will allow kids to shoot as long as they are over 8 years old.

The benefits that I came up were for my local archery range and the gun ranges that I have been to recently. I don’ t think that this pertains to each and every archery and gun range. It does however apply to many of the ranges that I have been to around Southern California. The lines are subjective to your area. You have seen them on the water, and maybe on the snow as well; riders racing along and boosting into the air at will, able to travel in any direct, and across any terrain while being pulled by the force of a giant kite.  Kite sports have quickly evolved in the last ten years to become the newest and fastest growing “extreme” sport.  So how does it all work?  What are these riders doing to control the massive kites, and how is it possible that a kiter can stand on the beach or walk around while still flying a kite that moments before boosted him forty feet into the air?  The secrets to controlling the kite all comes down to the design of the control bar, which is held in the riders hands and used to precisely adjust the tension in the lines attached to the kite.

Modern power kites like those used in kiteboarding today are built to fly on a four line platform, meaning there are two lines attached to the front of the kite one on either side of the center, and two lines attach to the back of the kite, one on each of the two wingtips.   Simply speaking, with the proper amount of tension of all four lines the kite will fly steadily and maintain its course through the air, pulling at an amount based on how hard the wind is blowing.  By adjusting the tension on one or more of the lines the rider can turn the kite to change its course, or alter the amount of wind the kite is catching to create more or less power, or pull, from the kite.  In order to control a kite with the potential to lift a person 40+ feet in the air or propel them more than 50 miles per hour across water or land (the current speed record over water is 54 knots (or 62 mph), a kiteboarder needs to be doing a combination of both these types of adjustments at all times.  For everything to work, the design of the control bar needs to be simple, and functional, and the solution turns out to be fairly simple.

The two back lines of the kite each attach to the outside ends of the kite control bar.  By pulling one side of the bar in towards the riders body, and angling the other side of the bar toward the kite, the rider can increase the tension on one side of the kite.  This causes the kite to rotate, or turn, around the wingtip being pulled on, changing the direction the kite is traveling.  The rider will pull on one side of the bar or the other to adjust the direction the kite is flying in order to keep it from crashing, or to change direction, or to steer it upwards in order to jump.

The two front lines of the kite come together before reaching the bar, and attach to a single center line called the sheeting line, which runs through the middle of the control bar and ends in a plastic loop which attaches to a special harness worn around the riders waist.  With the loop hooked to the harness, the control bar can be slid up and down the sheeting line, which has no effect on the tension of the front lines, but does loosen or tighten both outside lines simultaneously.   By pulling the bar down the sheeting line and closer to his body a rider is increasing the tension on the back lines and therefore on the back of the kite, which makes the kite hold the wind more effectively and pull harder, or feel more “powerful”.  When the rider slides the bar up the sheeting line and away from his body the back lines are loosened, reducing the tension on the back of the kite and allowing it to more easily spill the wind and “depower”, or create less pull. 

This simple system in combination with modern kite design improvements has not only allowed professional kiteboarders to push the limits of the sports, also made the sport more accessible to everyday athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike.  Of course even with an understanding of how the equipment works, aspiring kiteboarders should definitely take a few lessons before attempting to fly the massive kites on their own.

Tips for tuning a four line kite control bar

• Check to ensure the two back lines (attached to the outside ends of the control bar) are the same length, and that the two front lines (attached to the sheeting line at the middle of the control bar) are as well.  Front and back lines are usually but not necessarily the length as well.
• When first flying a kite you are unfamiliar with, attach the back lines to the ends of the leader lines on the kite (also know as pigtails), to allow for the most length possible in the back lines.  When flying the kite with the control bar pulled all the way in towards your body, if there is still slack in the back lines and the kite is not catching the wind or is unresponsive to steering, then land the kite and tighten the back lines by attaching them closer to the kite on the kite leader lines (pigtails.)
• Back lines can be tightened in this way until there is a lot of tension on them with the bar pulled in, and the kite feels very powerful and sensitive to steering input.  However, the back lines should not be so tight that when the bar is slid up the sheeting line and away from the riders body that the back lines are not loose and there is still tension on them, preventing the kite from spilling the wind and depowering.
• Too much tension on the back lines can result in the kite falling backwards out of the sky, or “stalling”.  With the control bar pulled all the way, or nearly all the way, in for power, the kite should not “stall”.  If it is then the back lines need to be lengthened a few inches.
