Betting On Horse Racing – Setting Your Correct Staking Levels for Backing Horses

By now you will have set up your initial Betting Bank and are now making your selections or following the ones I provide on my website. In this article I will look at how much you should be staking and how to work out your correct staking level.

Are you making LSP?

Before I look at staking, it is important that you are using the correct selection process. The important point when developing your own selection system is that it must make a Level Stakes Profit, that is to say over a period of time if you bet a set level stake of £10 on each of your selections you would show a clear profit.

This is the most common reason most people lose money in their betting, simply their selection process is not making a Level Stakes Profit and to compensate for this they are adjusting their staking levels to make it profitable, in this scenario, it is only a matter of time until they lose their banks and go bust.

The next important step is for you to set your stakes at the correct level. In a strategy where we are both” backing” horses to win or each way and also “laying” horses to lose it requires two very different approaches to staking.

Setting your staking levels to “back” horses

When backing horses to win a race or each way, to place, you need to decide a staking level which will give you both a good return but also protect your bank in the event of a long losing run.

The balance between the two is clearly important and a basic mistake that many “punters” make is to get greedy and set their stakes too high, leaving themselves open to losing runs devastating their betting banks. Other conservative “punters” set their staking levels too low, so they fail to take advantage of wins and their betting bank grows far too slowly.

I recommend that you look at your bank and set your betting level as a percentage (%) of your bank.

Increasing your staking level as your bank increases

As you are building your bank up, you can increase your stakes in proportion to the new bank level, however I would recommend to keep things under control, you increase your stakes in increments of 10% increase in your bank.

As an example, you have a bank of £1000 and are staking, maintain your stakes at £5 per point until your bank hits £1100, then increase your stakes to £5.50 per point, which is 0.5% of the new bank of £1100.

What if my betting bank decreases?

If you find yourself on a losing run, which will happen regularly in your career, then you have two options. You can either reduce your staking levels to the level of your new bank or maintain them at a set figure to help your bank grow again.

The way I have always approached this is by maintaining a set staking amount, unless my bank reduces by 10%, I would then reduce my stake in proportion to the new bank level, until I pass the 10% mark again and then increase my stakes back up.

As an example. Your bank has risen to £1100 so you are now staking at £5.50 per point, but you have a losing run of 4 or 5 bets, so now your bank is back around the £1000 level, now you reduce back to the £5 per point staking level until you build your bank back up over the £1100 and can return to £5.50. Don’t panic and reduce your level back down to £5.00 per point as soon as you drop below the £1100 point.

Just keep in mind that it is very natural for your bank levels to rise and fall throughout your betting career, it is the smart bettor who adjusts their staking levels to match this.

Summary

So in summary when backing horses you should be using no more than 1% of your bank per point, preferably 0.5% per point -when your bank gets to this level.

As with everything we do as a Betting Professional, you must stay disciplined with your staking levels – never get greedy. Your mantra should always be to build your bank slowly but surely and increase your staking levels accordingly.

In my next article I will look at the importance of setting the correct staking levels when “laying” horses to lose and the difference between using Level Stakes vs Limited Liabiliity Staking.

Golf Putting Tips For Golfers Of Every Level

Everybody needs to work on their putts. I don’t care how long you’ve been playing golf, or what kind of pro you are. We all need to practice putting. Here are some tips from the pros that will help you get your putting up to par. Try some of these and see what works best!

– Always do a couple practice putts before you start your game. Don’t try to make a hole; just get the ball in the general direction. Focus on your swing, not making the hole. By doing some practice putts, you can also get a feel for how fast the ball will run on the green.

– Practice easy putts. Don’t worry about making a long shot. Definitely practice a few long ones, but for the most part, stick to within 6-feet. Missing every practice putt will only hurt your confidence, and there’s more to a good putt than just making the hole.

– It’s amazing how much confidence has to do with putting. In golf, more than any other sport, player confidence is key. And, it’s a problem that amateurs and pros alike have to deal with. Keep this in mind when you’re putting, and train yourself to stay confident, even when the ball doesn’t go where you want it to.

– Don’t look at the ball when you’re making your target – look just ahead of the ball. Focus on a spot right in front, a spot that you want that ball to roll over. After you hit it, you’ll know if you’ve made the shot or not by whether you see it cross that spot.

– Don’t move! Check your position before the shot and make sure it’s perfect. But, don’t move out of your position until the ball is well on its way. If you get impatient and want to watch that ball fly toward the hole, you may straighten up too fast and lose control over your putt.

– There are some ways you can keep yourself from naturally following that ball and ruining your putt. For example, look at the spot the ball was on, after it rolls off. To practice this, you can lay a coin under the ball, and keep your eyes on the coin after the ball has rolled completely off.

– When you’re practicing, there are putting drills you can do. For example, put in 5 balls from a distance of 1 foot; then move back a foot. Then another and another, and if you miss one shot, you have to start the whole thing over again from one foot.

– For some really deep, heavy-duty putting practice, close your eyes when you putt. With your eyes closed, you’ll be more aware of the way the rest of your body moves. You’ll feel your torso twist and your shoulders swing steadily, just like a pendulum with the club swinging from it.

– Practice like crazy. That’s the best golf putting tip anybody can give you. The longer you’re out there practicing, the more you’ll develop a feel for it. Like everything else, practice makes perfect!

Dungeon Leveling Guide – Utilizing Dungeons to Level

World of Warcraft was first introduced almost five years ago, and in the beginning, folks did not do a lot of Dungeons. It had been something which the guilds ran through, and not something which normal gamers seemed to get into. It was subsequently really hard to locate additional gamers who would be willing to team together with you and then journey half-way around the world in order to go into the Dungeon with you. Also, getting a Warlock to join your party seemed to be practically necessary in order to teleport folks to the dungeon, or else your team could not get going.

There are plenty of great low lvl dungeons but the majority of people never take a look at them since it is actually tougher to get low level gamers to team with because everyone on the server seemed to be already at lvl eighty. Luckily that has changed with the introduction of the brand new Dungeon Finder method in Patch 3.3.

Should you go into Warcraft right this moment and go into the “Looking for” Group window, you will see the brand new ‘Dungeon Finder’ instead. The Dungeon Finder seems pretty similar to the way the “looking for” one was organized. There are the role choices at the top. Then you have the choice of being the leader of the team, if you want.

The Dungeon Finder program will then quickly locate a team for you and teleport the whole team into the dungeon so you can start playing instantly. That’s right, it finds you a team AND gets you to the dungeon! Talk about time savers!

If you have ever actually stuck to the quest narratives in WoW, you probably already realize that ultimately the storylines guide players into the dungeons. It used to be irritating back in the day to have tons of great quests just waiting in the log-book that you just weren’t able to accomplish on your own. Waiting around until eventually you were high level so that you could so it solo essentially took the excitement away from it and by that time, you didn’t even need the rewards from it anymore.

When Blizzard introduced the new dungeon finder, I realized that it could really help me with leveling-up. Now it’s a pretty common move to make. A lot of gamers reach lvl fifteen and then they basically just do a ton of different dungeons until finally they reach lvl eighty.

Although this is a well established technique for lvl-ing, I actually think it’s pretty monotonous just running dungeons for 65 levels. It’s so much like just grinding your way up. Just slaying monsters all the time, without any specific purpose other than lvling, is not really my idea of “fun.” Blizzard designed the storylines so that the dungeons are the final location which players go to in order to finish the quest series. So hey, novel idea, that’s precisely what I decided to do.

Before going to run a dungeon, I generally finish each of the quests needed for that dungeon. Usually, there are about three to five quests for each dungeon with a number of them requiring players to finish a string of solo quests first.

Dungeon quests are obviously harder than the basic quests so you’re compensated with two times the exp pts and rare items. So basically, finishing five dungeon quests is the equivalent of finishing ten quests by yourself. The blend of the quick grinding exp you get inside Dungeons and the Dungeon quests provide you with the quickest lvling possibly. I frequently lvl-up about one or one-and-a-half entire levels simply by turning in the quests. And I’d get about one-and-a-half to two more levels just finishing the dungeon, and then there’s the rare items you get, which are on par with, (and often better than) Heirloom items.

At first, I was using still like wowhead and wowwiki to help me through some of the dungeons, but then I found Dugi’s Dungeon Leveling Guide and was amazed at how easy it was.

It’s an easy to follow guide for the Dungeons at each lvl. For instance, if you’re lvl25 and you’d like to run the Razonfen Craul quests and dungeon, you just select the Razonfen Craul guide and follow the super easy instructions, which will also tell you all the pre-req quests for Razonfen Craul.

This particular guide also advises you when you need to zone, queue and start the dungeon. It also tells you what to do after you’ve completed the dungeon. This guide instantly will give you complete directions about where you need to turn in the quests as well as exactly how to get there.

As soon as you finish a dungeon you can easily go to the following dungeon in the guide. Using this guide, I’ve been able to lvl super fast. Having the guide readable while you’re in the game is an amazing feature and it helps make finishing the dungeons, (and leveling up fast), super easy and quick.

Dugi’s Dungeon Leveling Guide generally cuts out all the unnecessary solo quests and only has you do the dungeon quests that are prerequisites. However, I did notice that Dugi occasionally provides info about solo quests that you don’t need for a dungeon but that was simply because you’ll already be questing in that specific location, so it totally pays to finish the additional solo quests while you’re already there.

So far, I have been loving every minute of leveling with this guide. WoW seems like a totally different game. A lot of the story lines in the Dungeons are totally legendary. Someone asked me what my favorite was, but I had a tough time deciding. I suppose I would have to say it’s a tie between the Scarlet Monastery Cathedral and Gnomeregan.

Hopefully, Blizzard will adapt the dungeons for Cataclysm cuz it’s be a pity to drop all of them permanently. Just in case, I’d suggest you finish the Dungeons before Cataclysm arrives, so that you can really experience the vibrant story line in Warcraft.

I’ve noticed a lot of folks getting to lvl80 without having any idea about how to play in their class. Running the dungeon quests is the most effective approach to understanding your class since as people level-up, the dungeon obviously get more difficult and you’ll progressively discover the way to perform your class function so that hopefully as soon as you do reach lvl80 you won’t get made fun of or booted from your guild and raids when you don’t understand how to play your class in dungeons.

Early Childhood Education Level Mentorship – Beginning of Holistic Human Capital Development Journey

Early childhood education mentorship is aimed at the practitioners. They are charged with the responsibility of taking care of the children at the centers like kindergarten.

It has become a necessity that even those parents that are not necessarily busy must see a need to send their children to an early childhood development centers like kindergarten.

Children are our future. They take care of our legacy, carry our culture, including languages, into the future. The teaching of the African languages, in the case of South Africa, must happen at the early childhood centers level. There are many linguists and retired professionals who could teach children pure African languages. By the way, this includes the tradition of delivering knowledge through story telling, plus fairy tales being told by the elders.

We must fight all the evil deeds like drug trafficking that are targeting the children. This kind of mentorship supports the initiatives of the practitioners against such ills in the society. All children, irrespective of their parents’ status are entitled to high quality early childhood care and education, plus professional mentorship.

The Early Childhood Level Education Mentorship Programme is the beginning of the Holistic Human Capital Development Journey. It is a foundation of a life long learning. If established well from the beginning these children becomes valuable members of the society. This is the level at which the society must throw all its resources and efforts to get the education of the society right.

Nobody argues with the fact that education at this level should without any doubt be free, including feeding scheme. We get it wrong here, the whole country will suffer the consequence in the future. The long-term implications are dire. Mentors must be made available by the state to support all those early childhood centers that are public and non-profit making. These mentors must be qualified and be credentialed by reputable professional mentorship associations.

Perhaps at this point we need to explain what mentorship is and what it is not. “The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves,” Steven Spielberg (Director, Producer, and Screenwriter). The term mentoring has its roots in Greek mythology. In Homer’s Odyssey, the hero Odysseus entrusts his friend Mentor to look after his son, Telemachus, while he is away at war and prepare him to be king. The word mentor came to mean teacher, educator or role model. So, a mentor is a trusted person who offers his or her own knowledge to support, guide and encourage another, known as the mentee.

We must clearly distinguish between training, mentoring and coaching. Training can be either internal or external, in which a trainer assumes the role of a teacher. He or she imparts special and needs-based competency and knowledge components. Training normally takes place in groups. It offers professional and behaviour-based development, i.e. it imparts specific learning content. Mentoring is mainly internal, and mentor functions as a role model. He or she offers specific and tangible assistance in practical situations. This is often offered on a one-on-one basis. Coaching is mainly external, and the coach assumes the role of a tutor. It develops general individual competence and problem-solving skills. The sessions are mainly delivered on a one-on-one basis, although team and group coaching are now offered as well. However, it is not every coach that is able to facilitate team or group coaching. The coach’s methodological knowledge supports the development process. Coaching is highly recommended for personal and professional development.

In the future articles we will look into the Basics of Mentoring like Methods and tools for Mentoring: (1) Competence Profiles – progress measurement in the mentoring process, assignment of mentor and mentee; (2) Mentor Guidelines – guidance for the mentor throughout the entire mentoring process; (3) Mentoring Agreement – confidentiality and commitment must be ensured in a mentoring programme; (4) Rules of the Game – agreement on personal interaction (e.g. behavioural norms or assessment standards); (5) Checklist – ensure safe environment for mentee, continuous processing and operational support.

Sudoku – Take Your Daily Puzzle to the Next Level

So you love your Sudoku, in fact, you are getting pretty good at it! Truth to tell it’s all getting a bit too easy – ‘fiendish’ puzzles just aren’t that scary any more, ‘devilish’ just isn’t that hot, ‘migraine’ doesn’t even give you a headache. You are ready to go onto the next level.

Super Sudoku

The first step up is the 16 by 16 grid, sometimes called Super Sudoku. Instead of 1 to 9, the grid consists of 16 squares either with numbers 1 to 16, or numbers 1 to 9 then letters A to G. The principle is the same as the classic Sudoku, just more of it.

Sudoku X

Then there is Sudoku X, 9 by 9 puzzle grids again, but instead of just using the numbers 1 to 9 in each square, row and column only once, the diagonals of the whole puzzle must also contain 1 to 9 only once. There is a special Christmas edition of these books by Christopher Monckton, cutely entitled Sudoku X-mas.

Samurai Sudoku

Also called Gattai-5 Sudoku, this is a variation on the 9 by 9 grid theme. This time the puzzle consists of five grids, one in the centre and the other 4 overlapping each corner grid of the central one. This means that your numbers must be placed correctly for all the five puzzle squares.

Dion Cube

If you are looking for the ultimate challenge try three dimensional Sudoku – the Dion Cube. This ‘Extreme Sudoku’ puzzle was developed by Michael Mepham, who compiles Sudoku puzzles for The Daily Telegraph. This is truly fiendish. Imagine 9 Sudoku puzzles piled up on top of one another. Not only must each digit appear only once in each row and column of each separate puzzle, but once only in each vertical column and on each face of the cube too.

There ought to be something there to appeal to the most jaded Sudoku enthusiast, and get you reaching for the headache tablets once more.

Age of Conan Guide – Level 80 Dark Templar PVP Build and Review

The level 80 PVP spec’ed DT

General comments on leveling:

While I made this guide, The Dark Templar (DT) seemed a little “gimped” from levels 1-25, able to handle his own, but not much more. From level 25 to 45 you will notice that the Dark Templar (DT) starts to come into his own strength, in this area you should be able to easily handle 3-4 mobs your level or 2-3 mobs a level above you. (This is with minimal downtime) From 45 to 65 the DT really becomes strong; anything your own level becomes a waste of time. Above 65 mobs even 3-4 levels above you are fair hunting game as long as you do not pull too many. You will find that more then other classes the DT becomes very dependent on properly placed feat points, even more then actual gear. The DT also seems to be a “late bloomer”, not really coming into his own strength until 65+.

Skill points:

Bandaging and Fast Healing I have at 500. This seems to work fine with getting HP up between fights.

Recovery and fast Recovery I also have at 500. Stamina is the primary problem with DT’s when leveling solo. You might even consider taking 100 points from bandaging and 100 points from Fast Recovery and putting them into Recovery and Fast recovery.

I have 200 in Endurance and 200 into Run Speed. These were both used until I bought a mount. For end game PvP, you may wish to put 400-500 into run speed. (You DO NOT use sprint in end game PvP, unless you are happy with popping stam pots.)

Climbing has 450 only because of a climb point in Aztel’s Approach. (There is a shortcut there that you need to climb in order to use it)

Hiding has zero as this skill is not needed at all, in end game PvP you want others to see you, in order to come after you instead of the healers and nukers.

Perception has zero as I simply did not have enough points to place here. If you are going to use perception you will need to have this capped at 80 to be used effectively, and with a DT you cannot afford to do this.

Taunt has zero as this is not a PvE build.

I do have 152 points left over, however I am saving these in case there is a climb point in a raid/group dungeon that has a 600 point requirement. If this turns out not to be a concern, it will go into run speed.

The Feats:

Trained Feats

  • Blighted Touch5/5
  • Blighted Soul5/5
  • Dark Hand5/5
  • Devouring Blood Frenzy3/3
  • Devourer’s Might5/5
  • Incinerate Ether1/1
  • Dissipate Ether3/3
  • Dread Lord1/1
  • Combo – Mind Wrack1/1
  • Hexer’s Might5/5
  • Touch of Death5/5
  • Combo – Mind Shatter1/1
  • Unholy Strength5/5
  • Dread Shadow1/1
  • Trained Feats
  • Devouring Touch5/5
  • Spell – Covenant of Arms5/5
  • Vigor Leech5/5
  • Curse of Gwahlur5/5
  • Ether Leech1/1
  • Corrupt Weapon2/2
  • Approach of Death1/1
  • Improved Soul Covenants1/1
  • Spell – Soul Barrier1/3
  • Recovery5/5
  • Improved Frenzy Stance2/5

General:

I did have some reservations about putting any points at all in this tree. As such I only put 5 in recovery, since the Regen is half decent for the 5 points. The 2 points in improved frenzy stance are “left overs” that I did not see a better place for. The rest of the tree seems mostly for defense with the exception of Sustained Rage, which I did not have enough points to get. Remember this is a PvP build, NOT a PvE or raid build. In PvP you are not a prime target, healers and nukers are, and as such you can sometimes afford to be in frenzy stance to take down the enemy healers and nukers.

Desecration:

  • Devouring Touch 5 points: This beginning tree skill adds to your lifetap.
  • Covenant of Arms 5 points: This, IMO, is the best Covenant to run for DPS.
  • Vigor Leech 5 points: This is not an optional skill, the bane of a DT is stamina, and this stamina leech is a must have for PvE and PvP. This also leads to Ether Leech.
  • Talisman Mastery 0 points: I have not found a single decent talisman, and losing the shield does not seem to be intelligent.
  • Curse of Gwahlur 5 points: Decent skill that gives you health, causes damage, and seems to proc decently.
  • Ether Leech 1 point: Only 1 point here is awesome for a mana leech. (Note I do have Soul Barrier)
  • Corrupt Weapon: 2 points: A little disappointed here as it does not do much damage and it does not proc much, however I was forced to place 2 points to get the later Soul Barrier)
  • Improved Dread Fury 0 points: I cannot even cast a basic buff of this as I get an error that a more powerful spell is currently in effect.(Covenant of Arms) So there was no need to waste points here, I use Aura of Infusion which is awesome for survivability.
  • Approach of Death 1 point: Only 1 point needed here, I do notice it once in a while, not a huge benefit though.
  • Improved Martyrdom 0 points: I am not a healer, although this does do a good boost to health, I did not wish to spend the points in this.
  • Improved Soul Covenants: 1 point: Awesome skill for only 1 point, it is supposed to raise the proc % of the covenant itself.
  • Soul Barrier 1 point: This is a controversial skill, when you cast this (Lasts 20 seconds) damage is applied to your mana pool before your actual health pool. If you do have time to cast it, it is an awesome spell. The only bad thing is the cast time, if you get jumped you do not have time to use it, however if your group is initializing the PvP, this is a very nasty bonus. Note that I did take the two stuns in the other tree, using one of them does give me time to cast it in solo PvP, and popping a mana pot works wonders while under its effects.

Depravity:

  • Blighted Touch 5 points: Awesome feat adds DPS and procs decently.
  • Blighted Soul 5 points: Basically makes Blighted touch an AOE; however the other skill in the tree is useless.
  • Crystallized Ether 0 points: Total waste, the only time you use mana is to buff, even if you have Soul Barrier, the shield will drop faster then this skill will replenish it, use a mana pot instead.
  • Dark Hand 5 points: Basic DPS add to your melee weps.
  • Devouring Blood Frenzy 3 points: Since I do often hit frenzy prepping for PvP this seemed to be a decent investment of 3 points. I have not noticed a significant difference so I may investigate this more in the future. It is supposed to give you some health while in frenzy stance.
  • Consuming Bulwark 0 points: I do not do defensive stance in PvP so this is a waste.
  • Pact of Malacodor 0 points: Since I already frenzy I did not want to take a large health hit to cause more damage.
  • Devourer’s Might 5 points: DPS boost to an already powerful combo, I had no problem spending the 5 points here.
  • Dark Burden 0 points: I originally had this feat, however you had to be very close and I simply did not seem to have time to use it in PvP. As a tank class I am chasing healers and casters, I can stun them. Even if I am stuck chasing them, what good is a healer/nuker to the enemy team if they are constantly running?
  • Dissipate Ether 3 points: Needed this to cause double damage with incinerate ether. (Mana and HP)
  • Incinerate Ether 1 point: 1 point to double damage? Heck yeah.
  • Vile Soul 0 points: I have quite a few reservations about Sadism with a DT, the PBAOE is only double digit damage when it procs, almost useless in the fast pace PvP battles.
  • Sadistic Glee 0 points: Another Sadism feat.
  • Dread Lord 1 point: For 1 point you cannot complain about lowering cooldown on combos, even if it is not a massive reduction.
  • Reaper of Malacodor 0 points: Need Pact of Malacodor for this.
  • Mind Wrack 1 point: 1 Point for a stun ability, awesome.
  • Ether Reap 0 points: Will not waste 5 points for the tiny mana Regen when I use Mystical Bane.
  • Hexer’s Might 5 points: Another feat that adds DPS to a powerful combo.
  • Gore Fiend 0 points: Sadism Feat
  • Masochism 0 points: Sadism Feat
  • Touch of Death 5 points: Awesome skill for one shotting (Combo) casters
  • Air of Death 0 points: Decent skill however you must use Touch of death to trigger it. TOD has too long of a cooldown to justify this feat.
  • Sadistic Vengeance 0 points: Sadism Feat.
  • Mind Shatter 1 point: 1 Point for a more powerful stun, easy point placement here. Note the two stuns are on different cooldown timers.
  • Unholy Strength 5 points: Raises DPS of ALL combos.
  • Drain Strength 0 points: Wanted to place one here, but since I hunt healers and caster strength is meaningless to them.
  • Ravenous Eater 0 points: Did not have the preq for this.
  • Dread Shadow 1 point: This was the largest disappointment. Yes the skill works, however the pet spawns for a very short time 5 – 10 seconds. This should have been a 3 point feat at 10 seconds per point. Only 1 point, but almost useless.

WoW – Power Level the Way Underpaid Chinese Power Levelers Do

We all know those companies and site that advertise power leveling. Half of them simply uses a bot on your character to make it level. You account will be at risk of being banned. The other half of this websites simply hire some Chinese or other people that are willing to work hard for a few dollars an hour.

However, there are risk involved when hiring these guys. As with everything in life: ‘if you want to have something good, you must do it yourself.’ The best way to level as fast as possible is to do quest a t lower levels. Take all of them in the same area, fulfill the requirements and come back to collect the reward. This way you will waste less time by traveling.

At the higher levels you are going to grind until your fingers fall off.  Be sure to set the offensive macro’s, area of effect macro’s and target switching macro’s. Make macro’s of skills you often in sequence and make macros for support skills. Macro’s will save you a lot of time and will save you from a sore hand.

Stack as much food and bondage as possible. If you are grinding, you don’t want to go back because you run out of them. This is the number one way to waste your time in World of Warcraft. Don’t go back every half level to check the auction house either. This is a waste of time and gold. You should only check the auction house if you need to go that way.

Fastest WoW Leveling Guide – Finding the Quickest Way to Level 80 in World of Warcraft

If you are like many people leveling an alt, or starting fresh, you are probably looking for the fastest WoW leveling guide. There are many great guides out there, in fact I would be hard pressed to talk bad about any of them. What you need to do is sit down and determine your needs, and what you are willing to give up for the fastest WoW leveling guide.

Each guide has its own strengths and weaknesses. If you sit down and evaluate the guides you can easily find out which is good for what, and needs work in other areas. A couple of the guides are really only good for a couple of classes. Others only rely on free programs for any form of in-game functionality. Simply knowing what you need in the guide will go a long way to helping you here.

A big concern with many people at this stage is price. Many of these guides start out around fifty bucks. This may seem like a bit of money, but I can tell you that it is a good price. But this is a decision that you have to make, I cannot make it for you.

I will tell you that I have used a couple of the free guides myself. They were fairly well written, and did me well, but having used the paid methods I can say that I will never go back. The key feature that you get with many of the paid guides is an in game add on that will practically hold your hand while you level so there is no confusion. The guides are often written in text, so you can print them out, but is often it is not needed.

The Three Levels of Language

There are three levels of formality in spoken and written language. These levels or tones of language impact on communicative style. Every speaker or writer adjusts her language to the various contexts in which she employs it. I am speaking here about the notion of style and the related dimension of formality.

In our speech or writing, at times we are more careful, and at times we are more relaxed, just as at times we are more relaxed in other kinds of behavior. In other words, different modes of writing and speaking call for different usage of language, just as styles of dress are appropriate to different social occasions. Each language has its own way of doing this. The more formal a situation, the more attention we pay to our language. Every educated native speaker has the possibility of conscious choice of a less or more formal style. The forms and functions of any language vary, not only according to geography, but also in synchrony with social and cultural levels.

There are three usage dimensions of English: informal, semi-formal, and very formal. The levels of formality in which the English is used are called registers. These levels reflect the context in which they occur. No one style of vocabulary and grammar is superior to another. It’s their appropriateness to the context that matters. But we shouldn’t settle for substandard English. Standard language should be a universal goal in education.

In the following situations, you might find:

1. Informal – colloquialisms, slang, informal vocabulary, regional words and expressions, and casual expressions. Slang is the most informal level of language. We use informal language all the time in everyday conversation. It is used in everyday writing and speaking.

2. Semi-formal – standard vocabulary, conventional sentence structure, and few or no contractions (full forms like I have, do not, etc.). In the semi-formal writing, colloquialisms are much less common. For example, the indefinite pronoun one appears in place of the more conversational you. You will find this tone in assigned essays to students.

3. Very Formal – standard vocabulary (or more learned words), technical jargon, and complex syntax. Formal words occur more often. This style you will find in a professional journal.

It is important to note that an author’s tone and attitude are the combination of diction, vocabulary, syntax, and rhetorical devices used to create the specific writing piece with which she intends to inform her public.
