High School Track & Field – Yes, There is Phenom Jordan Hasay, Here Are the Best Preps of the Rest

It’s good to be Jordan Hasay of Mission Prep in San Luis Obispo (CA). She captured the heart of America’s running community by competing as a junior in the U. S. Olympic Trials last year, not qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics team but setting a national age-group and high school record by clocking 4:14.50 in a 1500-meter semifinal heat.

Hasay is a phenom, but there are other incredibly gifted high school track and field stars who will test their talent and skill in competition this spring. Here are some of the best of the rest:

Laura Roesler of Fargo South High School in Fargo (ND). Jordan Hasay wasn’t the only high schooler at the U. S. Olympic Trials. Roesler (pronounced “Race-ler”), a sophomore, was there as well. She clocked 2:03.08 in an 800-meter semifinal heat.

Hasay is from California on the West Coast, the nation’s largest state with a population of 35%2B million. Roesler is from North Dakota in the Midwest, a state with not even a million population (641,000%2B at last count). Roesler is a phenom too; she just has not received as much press. In her freshman and sophomore years, Roesler won state titles in the 100, 200, 400 and 800, not bad for a day’s work.

Chalonda Goodman of Newnan (GA) High School. Goodman is on fast track to success, having ripped through the 100-meter dash in 11.31 and the 200-meter in 23.22. She is the 3-time defending state champion in both the 100 and 200 and is looking to capture the titles again during her senior year.

Donique Flemings of Saginaw High School in Fort Worth (TX). Donique is stepping out in style after her junior year, having set career best marks of 13.60 in the 100 hurdles, 40.96 in the 300 hurdles and 58.66 in the 400 hurdles. Her 300 time set the Texas high school record. Flemings is on the fly and will be tough to catch.

Top times of 5 fast 400-meter runners include two runners from Poly High School in Long Beach (CA), Jasmine Joseph (53.15) and Akawkaw Ndipagbor (53.35) and three runners from Florida, Robin Reynolds of Miami Beach (53.10), Ebony Eutsey of Miami (53.23) and Lanie Whittaker of Miami (53.25). How about any 4 of these gals on a 4×400 relay team?

Looking for stick-outs in the field events? Look no further, try these young women athletes:

Shanay Briscoe of Cypress Christian High School in Houston (TX) in the high jump, she went 6-1.25 as a sophomore while placing 10th in the World Juniors Meet in Poland last year. Shade Weygandt of Mansfield (TX) High School pole vaulted 13-10. Anna Jelmini of Shafter (CA) High School threw discus 183-11. Lauren Chambers of Kell High School in Marietta (GA) threw the hammer 184-9. Hannah Carson of Dobson High School in Mesa (AZ) threw the javelin 173-7.

Elijah Greer of Lake Oswego (OR) High School shines bright. Greer ran 1:47.68 as a junior last year during the World Juniors in Poland. He won the Oregon 1500 title in 3:57.76 as a sophomore and the 800 title in 1:50.60 as a junior before going to the Worlds. Zachary Melon of Buffalo (MN) High School ran 1:48.64. Unless you are down on the track when these guys run by, you cannot appreciate how fast they are moving for 800 meters.

Rynell Parson of Stevens High School in San Antonio (TX) ran 10.23 in the 100 meter. Randall Carroll of Cathedral High School in Los Angeles (CA) covered 200 meters in 20.91 last year. Tavaris Tate of Starkville (MS) High School toured 400 meters in 46.39.

Wayne Davis of Southeast High School in Raleigh (NC) ran 13.65 in the 110 hurdles and Reggie Wyatt of La Sierra High School in Riverside (CA) clocked 35.71 in the 300 hurdles and 50.10 in the 400 hurdles.

Connor McCullough of Chaminade High School in West Hills (CA) is dead serious about the hammer throw; you know because he cranked a 260-0 throw last year to set the national record.

Mason Finley of Buena Vista (CO) High School put the shot 68-0 and threw the discus 222-1. Marquise Goodwin of Rowlett (TX) High School jumped 25-4.75 in the long jump. Bryce Lamb of Chandler (AZ) High School jumped 52-2 in the triple jump. Jack Whitt of North High School in Norman (OK) pole vaulted 17-0.

Eric Kynard of Rogers High School in Toledo (OH) high jumped 7-3.75 and Ricky Robertson of Hernando (MS) High School cleared 7-3. Justin Shirk of Harrisburg (PA) threw the javelin 221-3 and Johann Swanepoel of Shawnee Mission (KS) recorded a 221-2 throw.

These are just some of the outstanding prep athletes in the United States. Every one mentioned in this article was a High School All-American last year and should be returning to competition this year.

Bachelor Party

The best man is responsible for throwing the bachelor party for the groom and his friends. The bachelor party is a tradition, which began in ancient Rome. It was the last farewell to being single party for the groom and his friends to enjoy themselves one last time before the groom committed himself to wedded bliss. A bachelor party can be loud and rowdy, with single women included in the merry making, or a bachelor party can simply be a gathering of friends, engaging in their own kind of fun, to enjoy a night out before the wedding. Although, the best man is in charge of the planning and the event of a bachelor party, the party is for the groom and his likes and dislikes are respected, in the theme and location as well as the guests to his bachelor party.

Planning a bachelor party takes some time that cannot be put off until the last minute, if you want to pull off an incredible bachelor party. Sometimes throwing a bachelor party can cause a bride to worry and may even cause problems for the soon to be couple, therefore, when deciding on your party theme, you will need either to take into the consideration the feelings of the bride, or simply not let her in on the bachelor party theme and agenda. It is hoped that the females will be able to throw a bachelorette party to get her mind off any insecurities she may have about her groom and his party. Nonetheless, the best man is in charge of the bachelor party and its proceeding.

Planning a bachelor party should be done with the groom. You should begin planning at least six months before the wedding and you should never plan a bachelor party the night before the wedding. As throwing, a bachelor party can be very draining on those who should show up at the wedding with a fresh face and clear eyes so the wedding photographs show a pretty picture, rather than a bunch of tired, red eye men with no real energy for the wedding.

While planning the bachelor party with the groom you will need to make a list. First, determine those whom the groom wishes to attend the party as well as the location for the party. The best man should also list the types of activates the groom enjoys, such as camping, fishing or hunting as well as any type of favorite games, such as laser tag or paintball. Keep in mind that the best man can also have help by delegating the duties to other men who are interested in helping to throw the bachelor party, as this will make things much easier and more likely to go over without to many problems. Although, when delegating responsibility, the best man is also to supervise the duties to make sure everything is ready on time.

Once you have determined the location and the guests to the bachelor party, you will need to consider the theme of the party. Depending on the wishes of the groom, the party can be outrageous or a simple get together. However, you do have the prerogative of throwing in a few surprises for the groom, if you wish. Just keep in mind that when there are alcoholic drinks being served that you will need designated drivers to ensure everyone gets home safely. Do this by arranging with other sober friends or a taxi service, to drive everyone home after the bachelor party.

Don’t Become a Lawn Care Horror Story

I have already heard two lawn care horror stories this year. Both were highly preventable, with the use of an actual, insured, honest, and knowledgeable lawn care professional instead of someone with a rake, and mower claiming to be a “professional”. I have even seen people driving around with a push mower stuffed into the trunk of a car claiming to be “lawn care professionals”.

The first lawn care horror story of the year came last week when a lady called me for an estimate. We got talking and she mentioned she has hired 5 “professionals” in the last 5 years. Last years “professional” took the cake… not only did he mow the lawn during the drought when nothing was growing not even the weeds and charge for it, but he was billing her for lawn care services that obviously were not being performed all the way into January and February.

This next one is really bad too. I got a call yesterday from a kind, senior citizen lady who had two lawn care “professionals” last year, which was the 1st year she had ever hired someone to take care of the lawn as she is no longer able to do so herself. Her first “professional” “dumped” her as she says because she paid him for the month of September, but he never showed up and his phone is disconnected. Her second lawn care “professional” sprayed weed killer along her sidewalks, driveway, around her shrubs, landscaping, and the beautiful maple tree in the front yard that is landscaped in beautiful red mulch (they sprayed the weed killer out about a foot from all these objects) killing off all the grass around them. The only reason to do this is because the “professional” is to lazy to use or doesn’t even own a weed whip. Not only did this “professional” do this but it was very obvious to me that she did not sharpen her blades regularly (or maybe she never sharpened them) as the lawn was not cut evenly, and there were even long lines of grass that had not even been cut because this “professional” missed them when they were “cutting” the lawn. Sharp blades are very important to the proper maintenance of a lawn because not only do they give you a beautiful even cut, but they actually cut the grass instead of tearing and ripping the lawn like dull blades will do.

Don’t become a lawn care horror story, hire a true professional not just someone claiming to be a pro because they have a lawn mower, and charge people to cut their grass.

The Best Way to Cook a Tri-Tip

I have attended BBQ contests, mixed and matched spices and rubs and have tasted so-called winners “Best”. Honestly, few have lived up to their billing. While attending a BBQ contest last summer, I spoke with three competitors who all cooked their Tri-tip roasts differently. The first group smoked theirs in a hanging smoker. When served, the temperature was 135 and rare. The sauce a mix of ketchup. The first rule of thumb is…

TEMPERATURE; You need to achieve slightly pink in the middle and totally done around the exterior. In order to achieve this, I pull my Tri-Tip at 138 degrees. Let the meat sit for 15 minutes and it will come up 10 degrees in temperature. Remember, 140 is rare, 150 medium, 160 well. A well done Tri-Tip is chewy and lacks flavor and taste.

The second competitor called their entry “Santa Fe style”. They used a Santa Fe style rub on the beef. They also had a special red tree bark thrown on to smoke the last 10 minutes which was supposed to impart a special flavor on the beef. What I found was very little flavor from the rub, and no extra special taste from the bark.Dull and bland!

PREPARATION: I have found little to no difference utilizing countless rubs on Tri-Tip. Remember you are cooking a roast. If you really want to impart flavor, use a wet marinade. You have a thick piece of beef and you need penetration. Try to marinate for at least 24 hours with potent flavors to build character and flavor profile. You can add your spices to the marinade.

The last competitor and winner of this BBQ Tri-Tip award was a local winery, whose chef did little to no prep but creatively hid his trip tip in a small brioche bun with a bit of home made chutney. I thought it was smart, but far from showcasing the meat product. He hid it!

BUILD CHARACTER AND FLAVOR: the meat should be marinated to build a rich flavor. The longer the better but try for over night. Sear the outside of the roast first to help build a char and a crust. If you have a bit of a fat layer, this will help build a good crust. A total of 5-10 minutes over direct heat when you are getting the coals going should do the trick. Once the sear is complete, pull it across the grill and indirectly smoke it. Use chip and chunk and a mix of hickory, apple, cherry or other fruit. Hickory for its pungent signature and fruit wood for its mild taste. Watch your temperature and pull it at around 138 degrees. Sit it for 10-15 minutes before cutting into it ENJOY!

The Many Responsibilities That Are Included in the Key Job Roles of an Estate Settlement Lawyer

Estate settlement and estate planning are important parts of planning for the future and the security of one’s near and dear ones. These are part of an individual’s last will and testament. And in the preparation of all these, the role of a probate lawyer is important who are generally experts in executing the last will and testament of an individual as per his or her wishes. To help with estate administration duties, it is important to record and draft legal papers through the court and for this, the estate executors have full independence to hire lawyers who are experts in these documentation processes. There are generally two kinds of probate lawyers and they are probate litigators or transactional litigators. It is typically the transactional lawyers that handle duties which are related to the estate. On the other hand, when the heirs challenge the will or there are family disputes regarding the same the probate litigators are responsible for looking into the matter and coming up with an agreeable solution.

Transactional lawyers are sought out when there is a need for submitting the death certificate and the last will and testament. If there is no will and there is confusion regarding the last wishes of the deceased, generally the estate settlement lawyers are required by the transactional attorneys to assist in the estate settlement procedures. There are some common estate duties like obtaining affidavits for real estate transfers; sending creditor notification letters; filing final tax returns, and drafting ‘consent to transfer’ forms for financial accounts. If and when the heirs contest the will or if there are any lawsuits regarding the same then probate litigators are hired to defend the estate during the probate process. When it comes to the distribution of assets or properties and mediating the disagreements or disputes that might arise in the process the probate litigators can come in handy to solve all of it in an amicable manner. There are even some probate lawyers who have the skills and the qualifications of handling both the litigation and transactional cases. But it is always wise to check out at least three or more attorneys when someone is thinking of seeking the services of an attorney. There is no point in hiring the first one that comes along if ultimately he or she is not suited to do the duties which are best suited for the interests of the estate.

When a near one expires the whole family goes into mourning and it is a difficult time for them to say the least. It becomes a torture to think about estate planning and settlement when one is going through the process of grieving. Therefore, it is wise to seek the assistance of the estate lawyer who was involved in executing the will of the departed soul. But, it is also important that the estate settlement lawyer has the necessary attitude and personality for the proper administration of the estate. It is a sensitive matter and therefore the lawyer should be empathetic and should understand the dimensions of the family relationships so that the process is handled in a compassionate and gentle way, or otherwise the entire settlement process becomes a harassing experience. By engaging in estate planning strategies previous to death, individuals can avoid probate and all the disputes that result when there is no will and testament. It is a complex matter, to say the least when it comes to handing over the ownership of assets and properties and therefore all the documentation should be done in a proper manner so that there are no gaps while they are required to be filed at the court of law. Hence while appointing a lawyer many factors should be considered and then only the right attorney should be employed who can do justice to their roles.

James Lai As a Leo

The intro I want to give you about James Lai is this quote from the mouth of the leo himself, “I am really good at multiple choice”. To me it feels important. It could be because the first time I met James he pulled out multiple – maybe four cameras loaded with different films and took photo after photo of Nina Escalante. It could be because visiting him to do this interview I got to flip though a whole box lid filled with polaroids. When it comes down to slicing and story telling, shooting on film, means you take a risk a digital photographer does not. James is just so casual about that.

ALEXIS

JAMES

Where is the last place you went with the specific intention of taking a photo?

I’m trying to think… Sometimes I do that but usually, I have my camera and I just take photos whenever I feel like it. There are times when I need to go out because I’ll need to find the right timing for the light and stuff. But the last time I remember is the financial district.

What where you there chasing after for a photo?

I want to take photos that represent different people in Toronto and I feel like Bay Street is something that is interesting to take photos of. Also, the light is pretty good there.

How do you explore photography as a medium beyond snapping a photo?

Usually I go to the library and I look at books. For me, I guess beyond taking the photo there is also looking at the photos. So I predominantly shoot film which means that I don’t get to see what the photos are like until they are developed. Usually, I don’t develop until I save up at least eight rolls. It means I end up with a library of photos I can look at after. So I think another good way to explore the photos is to recognize that 99% of your photos are bad. So what you want to do is to try and find the good ones. That is actually really hard.

One of the artists whose work you showed me last time I was here was Araki, And you said what you liked about him and a lot of other Japanese photographers was that they are prolific in their work. What does it mean to you for an artist to be prolific in their art?

What most impresses me is their volume. That it becomes an excess. A lot of Japanese mentality and design is actually in minimalism. But then when you separatists like Araki or DaidÅ Moriyama just blast out hundreds of books or things like that. It’s interesting to me because it becomes a stream of consciousness. It becomes something other. It definitely showed Japan very well.

When you exhibit your photos what is it like to exhibit work and have the people who are the subjects of the photos actually be at the show and see their photos?

James laughs here. So I haven’t done too many shows but I realized the trick is to just get really drunk. Then you don’t really remember anything from the show and it’s usually a positive thing.

A subject matter you seem to like exploring beside people is flowers. What is it about flowers that interest you to study?

So it is actually more of a burgeoning interest. What interest me in flowers is that I feel like a lot of other photographers have explored flowers. A lot of photography is about trying to find the way you make photographs. The way you as an individual makes photographs. If you look at flowers from Maplethorpe or flowers from Araki or there are plenty of other photographers; they all look very different. They have sort of found their own thing in flowers. What I am trying to do is find my own thing in the flowers. I don’t know I just like doing these exercises.

As a photographer who is always snapping photos do you ever feel that there is a greater risk in not taking a photo than in doing something physically extreme like climbing a tree for an angle?

Yes I would climb a tree! If I needed to. There are many different ways to approach the moment of taking a photo. Some people are very measured and they like a tripod and all those things. I like running around like an idiot and pushing the shutter, trying to get it at the right time. So if I need to I will climb trees or run around with my head cut off.

Do you usually take one photo, and feel settled that you have captured that moment?

So I am a very bad photographer. I need to take a lot of bad photos in order to get a good photo. For me, I try to keep taking photos until hopefully its done.

You mentioned going to the financial district and being interested in that type of person. You actually have a background in economics. Do you think that is going to or has played an influence on your experience of art-making?

There is some experience there. I think what’s most compelling about me. Because I am pretty cool is that I get along with so many types of people. I have always seen myself as someone who rotates around circles. That includes when I worked as an analyst, an energy analyst. So you have your circle there. I realized there are stories in each circle that are pretty interesting. I try to find photos in all the different places.

Do you have a favourite photo you have taken?

Uh… No, I think they could all be better.

Excel Tip – Calculating A Rolling Or Moving Average Using The OFFSET Function

Calculating moving averages can be a really useful way to look at trends in your data, and we can easily set up a formula in Excel to always look at the last 3 or 6 or any numbers of months in your data.

They are one of the most used and popular indicators. The best place to start is by understanding the most basic type of trend the simple moving average (SMA). No matter how long or short of a moving average you are looking to plot and track, the basic calculations remain the same time and time again.

Let’s take a look at an example. I want to know the last 3 months average sales of my Beanie Hats… always the last three months even when my new monthly sales data is added into my spreadsheet.

I have entered the number of months I want to use for the moving average in cell G6. (In this way I can easily change the number of months I want to look at in my formula- I may at some point want to look at 6 months or 9 months). The formula in G5 ( where I want my formula result to display) reads –

=AVERAGE(OFFSET(C7,COUNT(C:C)-G6,0,G6))

Date Volumes

Jun-14 50

Jul-14 65

Aug-14 35

Sep-14 87

Oct-14 99

Nov-14 89

Dec-14 150

Jan-15 250

Feb-15 257

Mar-15 146

Apr-15 150

My Dates re in Column B and my values are in Column C and begin in row 7.

Let’s break this down and work out what Excel is doing.

First of all, the OFFSET function returns a range in Excel, and we want this to always be the last 3 (or however many specified in our G6 cell). OFFSET takes the following arguments –

reference,rows,cols,height,width

So, we will tell the OFFSET function to create a new range with the starting cell being 7 cells below C4 (the first volume cell), and continuing for 3 cells down. How does it know to start 7 cells down?

By entering COUNT(C:C)-G6 as the reference, COUNT(C:C) returns the amount of cells containing numbers in the column C.. in this case 10. Subtract 3 as we want just the last 3.

Then…

Wrap it all in the AVERAGE function. We now have a moving average calculated automatically by Excel, we can change the number of months easily by changing the value of Cell G6.

The Last Case Of Smallpox On A Passenger Liner

In 1971 I was surgeon on the P&O liner Orcades. On Christmas morning early the phone rang, could I come and look at someone with weird rash. The patient was Goanese, and was one of a batch of 20 or so that had been flown in to Singapore some 5 days ago to relieve others due leave. His problem was spots and slight fever. They were on the young man’s arms and chest, raised from the surface of the skin, with a central dimple, and in medical jargon ‘umbilicated’. This was big jump from treating seasickness.

All the internal red lights went on at once. The differential diagnosis was both mundane and terrifying. Chickenpox was favourite, followed by insect bites, or a sort of skin infection commonly called impetigo, but and it was a very big but, the spots themselves matched the classical textbook description of Smallpox. Was there smallpox where he came from? It was still very early in the morning, about 7am, and at last the ship was fixed and just setting out on its way to a stop at a top tourist spot on the Great Barrier Reef, Hayman Island. This was a good 2 days sailing away. Now smallpox anywhere is a terror, on a passenger liner it is a disaster of Hollywood proportions. Smallpox is one of the most infectious diseases we know of, it also has a truly frightening mortality, varying from nearly 100% to at the best 20-30% depending on the strain of the virus and the susceptibility of the community it struck. In recent years we are accustomed to think of it as a weapon of terrorism since the disease itself was wiped out by the WHO’s vaccination programme, the last non laboratory case being in the early eighties. Even at the time of which I write it was rare, and confined to poor populations in hot countries.

He needed isolating. We were lucky in that respect, the ship’s hospital was situated over the propeller at C deck aft. There was a small self contained room there designed for just this purpose, known as the Brig, as it also doubled as a cell should the need for restraint arise in aggressive crew or passenger.

Then we radioed the Darwin Port Health, who said we could not go back, and suggested talking to the Authorities in Brisbane. Eventually the Captain spoke briefly and I was handed the radio to talk to the Australian Chief Medical Officer. He was a cross sounding man with no discernable sense of humour, not that the situation was funny. He insisted all on board should be inspected 24 hourly, but 12 hourly within 48 hours of landfall and yes all on board without a valid certificate must be vaccinated, no excuses tolerated. He did give the impression that he was as certain as he could be that our diagnosis was wrong and this was probably a storm in a tea cup and of course it was only chickenpox in an Asian man. We were to move out of Australian Territorial Waters and make our way to Brisbane for further instructions.

The CMO had insisted only the Ship’s Doctors could do the inspections but the nurses could help with the vaccinations. There were only 2 doctors, 2 nurses plus Ron the ex naval dispenser who counted as a nurse as far as I was concerned. Fortunately there already was an established inspection routine pre docking in Australian Ports. The Port Health ruled that any ship from Non Australian Ports must undergo a full smallpox inspection prior to being allowed to dock, so that we were used to doing such inspections. There was an established routine, and even an expectation of such from both the passengers and the crew, but doing it for four days, twice a day for the last 2 days was going to severely test everyone’s patience.

Medically we decided to combine the first inspection with the mass vaccination; we did the crew first to get our hand in as it were. We decided to vaccinate all of the Goanese crew whatever their smallpox certificate said. This was because to a man they were all notorious needle haters and it was well known that most of the certificates were forged. It was a cottage industry in Goa. Vaccinating was done by placing a drop of serum on the skin, and scratching two parallel lines at right angles and rubbing the stuff in to the scratches with a needle. It was not a painful procedure but the reaction of many would belie that fact, we brooked no excuses however elaborate

We eventually got to Brisbane and were also instructed to fly two yellow flags. Normally only one yellow flag was flown prior to being cleared by Port Health, two yellow flags signified we were a dangerous pariah. Our patient was trussed like a cooked chicken, unceremoniously grabbed and dumped on the trolley and whisked away, his breathing tube poking through the wrapping. He looked like an insect chrysalis. We never saw him again. Though we made several enquiries Brisbane Port Health Authority never confirmed it as smallpox, but they never said it wasn’t either. I remain convinced we saw the last case of smallpox on a passenger liner.

The Sense of Pride and Possession in the Duke of "My Last Duchess"

The Duke of Ferrara in “My Last Duchess” is the embodiment of pride and possession that is verbalized through his attitude and collection of paintings. Robert Browning chooses the best way to present the self representative Duke through his Dramatic Monologue which he fathered. Hiring of Fra Pandolf and Claus of Innsbruck, two imaginary sculptors, collection of paintings, fame of ‘nine-hundred-years-old name’, Neptune taming a sea-horse all represent his pride and controlling attitude.

The Duke likes the painting of his last Duchess more than her when she was alive as he has full control on her portrait now. He can uncover the curtain and enjoy her smile when he wants. He wanted her to smile only to him and did not tolerate it with anybody else. He thought his fame of ‘nine-hundred-years-old name’ should make her happier. But she was common and smile with common present of any common person. Her heart could be made glad with anything common. She did not distinguish between the ornaments of the duke, ‘the dropping of the daylight in the west’, and the ‘bough of cherries’ of ‘some officious fool’.

The duke did not want to stoop himself correcting her rather gave command and ‘all smiles stopped together’. Her portrait is ‘alive’ but when she was alive she was nothing but a subject of shame to the duke. As a duke he did not love his Duchess rather gave command that reflects his heartlessness. He regarded the Duchess as a thing of possession expected her to follow none but the Duke.

Of course he has aesthetic sensibility and love for art. He described every details of ‘the depthe and passion of its earnest glance’ of his Duchess to the envoy. But it is worthless searching liveliness killing a living one. In the downstairs of the Duke there is a sculpture of Neptune taming a sea-horse that expresses nothing but the taming and controlling mentality of the Duke. It is what the Duke desired for and it is what he will desire for as well.

The Duke has also possessiveness and it is declared with his indirect expectation of dowry form the Count. He says ‘though his fair daughter’s self’, but it is for his own self actually. His sense of pride is that he is the Duke, not the common one. His sense of possession is that he believes that everyone is under his power and command.
