How To Achieve Self-Realization, The Mother of All Knowledge?

The knowledge of the self is considered to be the best method to realize the True Knowledge of the world, particularly the human beings. In every religion, self-realization has been given the highest place. In Gita Lord Krishna said,

“I shall fully explain to you the Self-knowledge together with Self-realization after knowing that nothing more remains to be known in this world”.

Every religion including Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism emphasize the need of the self-realization through different methods like meditation or yoga. The importance of self-realization is not limited only to the religions. All poets, artists and scientist have realized the highest truth by self-realization. One of the greatest scientist and astronomer, Galileo has rightly said “You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself”. Even the greatest scientist like Einstein did not acquire the knowledge of their theories by experiments but the knowledge of the self by which he could capture the spirit of the Universe. In a letter to a child who asked if scientists pray, Einstein said,

Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe-a spirit vastly superior to that of man…. In this way the pursuit of science leads to a religious feeling of a special sort, which is indeed quite different from the religiosity of someone more naive.

Self-realization is the secret of all the creative people in the field of art, music, literature and poetry. In the words of the world famous poet Kahlil Gibran,

“Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms.”

If the knowledge of the self is really the mother of all knowledge, we must all be extremely knowledgeable as all of us seem to know at least one person very well, i.e. ourselves. Why then we do not have all the knowledge of the world.

It is, therefore, evident that there is a mystery contained in the “knowledge of self” and the self-realization is not same as knowing you as a person who has a body, desire, passion and mood that is changing with every moment. What is that, we need to discover in the process of self-realization?

Realization of the Self

When we see the world, from our eyes, we find it continuously moving and changing. People are getting older, new persons are born, old people are dying. If we happen to visit the world after few decades, perhaps we would find none in the same condition as a few decades ago. If we visit, the same place after a century, we may not find any known person. The dresses, the culture, the language, the houses and the lifestyle of the people undergo total change in few decades. Yet there is something that does not change with time and place amid all the changes in the world. This we call this “unchanging reality of the world” as the Spirit of the world.

In the same way, when we try to know ourselves, we find that we too are constantly changing. The changes are quite noticeable on the body as we advance from our childhood, to youth and then adulthood and days of old age. Almost every cell of our body is replaced in few months. Yet there is something in the human body that connects the past, present and future and which does not change.

Like our body, our thoughts and feeling too are changing every moment. Our thoughts today are not same as what we used to think a decade earlier. In some days, we feel happy but on the very next day, we may feel bad and even depressed. All feeling seems to come and go like the fleeting moments. We have sometime noble thoughts that lead us to do the noble deeds. Yet on the very next moment, we seems to be doing just the opposite. We seem to love a person more than our life in one day, yet hate them or become indifferent to them after sometime.

Thus, when you ask this basic question, “Who am I?”, you can hardly get a consistent answer. Unless you know yourself, you can never predict your behaviour and feelings in a particular context or in the future just like one can not predict weather or solar eclipse unless one has the full knowledge of the nature and planetary motion.

However, if we happen to pay close attention to know ourselves, we would soon start noticing that amongst the hundreds of changes going on in the body and mind every, moment, there is something that remains unchanged throughout our life. This unchanging reality is our True Self that gives us our identity and the goal of self-realization.

Thus the realization of the self is no easier than realization of the world. G.K. Chesterton, said

“One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star”.

Thus the realization of the self is possible only by paying close attention to the self and the world as both seems to be in the continuous state of flux. However, when one pays close attentions to the world around him, with a goal to find a connection between the apparently different events, he soon starts noticing a pattern within the dissimilar events. This pattern is the realization of the Ultimate Reality or the Ultimate Truth. In the words of K.T. Jong

It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.

Steps to Achieve Self-Realization

The first step to self-realization is close observation of the world without and within and making an attempt to find a reason for everything. When we meet different people or observe different events in our life, we often treat them happening by chance on random basis. Thus we fail to learn anything from the happening around us. However, if we believe that all effects are arising out due to some cause and due to some reason, we shall gradually discover the cause and reason behind every happening. There is a cause for your good and bad mood, your happiness and depression, love and hate emotions. However, the necessary condition of the self-realization is that the knowledge has to emerge from within unassisted by any external agent or agency and not on the basis of some theory propounded by any expert or specialist or scripture. In the same way the cause and reason for the all happenings in the outside world also has to be analyzed with the effort of the self knowldge.

Once, we get some logic and reason for the actions in the world, which comes from within by the help of intuition, the next step is to test the knowledge. This is not very difficult. For example, if you have found that your particular action is the cause of your happiness, you can enhance that action and the happiness must be increase. In the same way, your sadness must reduce by curbing the action that you found causes sadness. If your “intuition” is correct, gradually you must be able to make yourself a better person as you can achieve what you like most while avoiding the one which you don’t like.

The third step of self-realization to experiment your self-knowledge to the world outside. The knowledge of the self is not only for the self satisfaction or for the purpose of spiritual aspiration of the self but also equally applicable for the outside worlds as the whole world is created from the single cause which we refer as God or Supreme Being. A man by the knowledge of the Self actually realizes the knowledge of the Universe since the Self or Soul or Atman of the person is an integrated part of the Universal Soul or Spirit. Thus the knowledge of the self is applicable not only to the self but to all the people of the world as the “Self” of every person is same notwithstanding the external manifestation of the person which seems to be different for each person and seems to be changing every moment.

Don’t Be Knowledgeable: Be The Knowledge

In the modern world, there is no dearth of information which is often confused with knowledge. However, if one acquires all knowledge of the world, he becomes at the most a moving library of the knowledge. This knowledge is hardly of any use since the acquired knowledge is often contradictory and confusing.

A self-realized person does not acquire worldly knowledge but acquired knowledge from the depth of his soul. Thus he taps the knowledge of the universe and become knowledge itself. He knows the fundamental of the universe as though his Self he connects the Self or Soul of the Universe. Thus the self-knowledge is the mother of all knowledge since all knowledge can be created automatically by a self-realized person.

It is therefore, no surprise that self-realized people are highly valued in the society. All prophets realized the divine knowledge through the self-realization and they have been given the status of God. They are the Gurus and teachers of the humanity who have provided solutions to the problems of the mankind.

You Can Eat When You Are Hungry And Lose Weight

Brought up to use food as a comforter (by my very loving family), when I had my own children, I searched for ways of instilling a healthier relationship with food in my own children. I heard of an experiment where toddlers were given unlimited access to a broad selection of foods, from the foods considered to be healthy all the way to those found to be unhealthy, such as sweets and soda pop. It was found that although the children could eat all the sweet and fatty things they wanted, over the course of a month, their choices worked out as a healthy, balanced diet. They somehow knew exactly what to eat without being told. In other words, we are born with this instinct, and it is only when it is tampered with that we lose it. So I applied these principles to my own children, as much as my budget would allow. The result is that both are naturally slim and never have to watch their weight or struggle with food cravings.

So, we are born with an instinct to listen to what our body is telling us. But through conditioning while we are growing up, no matter how well-meant, we lose this instinct. But, we can re-learn it. If you are trying to lose weight, consider re-learning this instinct. You can re-learn to hear your body´s inner wisdom by allowing yourself to eat whatever you want, whenever you need it.

The reason why most people panic when they hear this is that they expect to want plenty of sweets, cakes, soft drinks, alcohol, chips and so on. But they have never trusted their intuition before, so how can they know what it will actually be like? How do they know they will not actually choose an overall healthy and balanced diet? Another reason for panic is the worry that they will not be able to stop eating, if they eat whenever they are hungry. But if you re-train your mind to listen to your body´s signals, you will soon learn how to recognize when you have had enough, and you will easily stop eating when that happens.

The biggest trick here is to get the emotional conditioning out of the way. My favorite tool to do this with is EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Techniques. If you are not familiar with EFT, you can download a free guide to the method from many online resources, or you can have some sessions with a practitioner. If you already know EFT, here are a few suggestions for you to tap on, in order to remove this emotional conditioning.

Setup

Even though my parents said I must finish all the food on my plate, because of starving children in the world, as if by my eating I am feeding them, I deeply love and accept myself.

Reminder

Finish all the food on my plate

Setup

Even though I was given a high-sugar energy drink when I had a cold and still drink it now, I deeply love and accept myself.

Reminder

Energy drink to get better

Setup

Even though my parents told me I couldn’t have my pudding until I had finished my food or completed my homework, thereby elevating the importance of pudding in my mind as a special treat, I deeply love and accept myself

Reminder

Pudding became that special treat

I think you get the picture. Just tap on whatever comes to you, until you find yourself naturally in control of your eating. And then simply become an observer in this situation, observing your new food choices, as gradually but surely, you lose weight. There will be times when the weight might go up a little before it goes down again. This is a natural phenomenon that happens to even naturally slim people. Do not let that get in the way of your weight-loss confidence. You can observe your weight going in the general downwards direction, until it finally settles at a slim and healthier you.

A Dog Named Christmas by Greg Kincaid

The local animal shelter has come up with a new program called “Adopt a Dog for Christmas.” Todd McCray decides his family should take a dog from the program for the week before Christmas. However, there is one big problem with Todd’s plan. He is a 20 year-old, mentally handicapped, adult-child still living at home on the farm in Kansas with his parents and his Dad doesn’t want a dog. Todd can be very persuasive so it doesn’t take him long to convince his father that this is a good plan. George, his father, tells Todd that he will agree to the plan, but that Todd must realize Christmas ends on December 26 and the dog goes back to the shelter on that day. Todd understands and promises that the dog will be returned to the shelter.

While they are at the shelter picking out their dog, Todd asks the shelter director what will happen to the other dogs. He is very concerned when he learns that those dogs will spend Christmas in their kennels at the shelter.

It has been a McCray Christmas custom to hold an open house on the Sunday before Christmas and nearly all the families in their small town stop by. At that open house, Todd begins telling everyone about the shelter and the “Adopt a Dog for Christmas” program. Gradually he enlists enough families so that every dog is adopted for Christmas week.

Well, as you can imagine, in the week that “Christmas” stays with the McCrays, he worms his way into each heart, especially George’s. George, however, is determined to teach Todd that when you make a promise who must keep it. George has also had some heart-wrenching experiences with dogs in the past and he isn’t sure that he can survive giving his love to another dog.

There is no doubt that this is a Christmas story first, but it is also the story of a man struggling to be a good parent and a family that is fully supportive of each member. There are so many stories about dysfunctional families, it is wonderful to read about a real family working together to really help each other. If you are a read-aloud together family, a Dog Named Christmas was written for you! If you just want a Christmas story to enjoy, you will not find a better selection. If you get as caught up with George McCray as I did, you can read his story in the prequel, Christmas with Tucker. Be sure to add these to your bookshelf. Put them right beside Miracle on 34th Street.

5 Tips To Ease Stress In The Home

Whether it’s elder care, adult children returning to the nest, divorce, remarriage, or both parents working, today’s family is inevitably faced with a myriad of changes which can cause stress in the home.

My husband and I relished our time alone after our children were grown and gone. Although he was still working, we had plenty of free time to enjoy our home and small trips. Our children and their families seemed to be doing well; our only living parent, my mother, lived by herself a few hours away. We could not foresee any major changes in our lives

Without warning, Mother became ill during a visit in our home and was admitted to the hospital. Her situation became critical for several weeks; we weren’t sure she would get to come home. After that, the only recourse was to have her live with us. At first Mother’s care was minimal and we continued our daily routines. Soon our relationship suffered as I gradually had to take on more responsibilities. Her diet needs were different; her ability to care for herself was limited; and she seemed to have endless medical needs.

Yes, there were times when I wanted to throw up my hands and say, “I quit.” I loved my mother and my family and found it difficult to juggle all the responsibility. I hope you find the following tips helpful as you face challenges in your life; they helped me keep things in perspective on those difficult days.

1. Recognize your responsibilities. It is your responsibility to maintain a clean, healthy environment. You are not responsible for how each person adjusts to the changing situations. You will never be Wonder Woman making everyone happy all the time!

2. Shed the guilt. For instance, if you have insisted a parent leave their home, it is not your fault they could not care for themselves. While they may accuse you of taking their home away from them, you must continue to show love and respect, secure in the knowledge that you did the best you could. Keep in mind: You are not perfect and neither is the rest of the family. You will make mistakes and so will they.

3. Communicate with the entire family. Several years into Mother’s care, I realized my husband needed to be more informed about what was involved in her care. As I became more open with her needs, he began seeing small ways he could help. He felt good to be a part of her care. Even if your family members cannot help, you owe it to them to tell them what is going on.

4. Accept things as they are. We cannot go back and change events. I wanted my mother to hold me and tell me everything was alright. She, at that time, did not recognize me as her daughter. I had to love and care for her regardless of whether or not she knew who I was.

5. Find support. This is so important. The amazing truth is that, no matter what your situation, someone else has been there.

I continue to be amazed at the influence a mother has on the home environments. There is truth in the saying, “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” You have a responsibility to care for yourself as you care for others.

Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells to Treat Acquired Hearing Loss in Kids

Have you ever imagined how a unit of umbilical cord blood can treat your child’s hearing problem? As stated by Dr. James Baumgartner, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Florida Children’s Hospital, umbilical cord blood stem cells can be used to treat several critical conditions among children. With regards to treating acquired hearing loss in children, he had confirmed that acquired hearing problem or loss can be treated with autologous umbilical cord blood stem cells.

Acquired hearing loss is a devastating condition in children, which does not remain present at the time of birth but acquired later. It’s believed that half of the children, suffering from the illness, received it from their genetics while half acquired it due to external factors like too much of antibiotic exposure, prematurity, and recurrent ear infections. And to make it worse, the severity of the condition is gradually progressive for many kids.

Dr. Baumgartner explained how a child learns to speak while hearing from others. He told that it takes 12 months of normal auditory input for a child to speak. During this period, a child’s brain develops an understanding of spoken language. If the child does not get exposed to auditory input for 18 months, the chances of speech is bleak. If he remains deprived of sound for over 3.2 years, he is probably never going to speak. That is the reason that acquired hearing loss is considered a critical condition in children.

Wondering what factor leads to acquired loss of hearing? Well, there is an organ, called corti, which is located in the inner ear and is considered the microphone of our body. Our auditory nerve fibers are situated just beneath the hair cells in corti. And its main function is to pass signals to our brain. The loss of hair cells in the organ of corti leads to acquired hearing loss.

The most-practiced treatments to treat acquired hearing loss in kids are cochlear implants and hearing aids. However, both of these solutions only address the symptoms and don’t provide any cure. Now let’s come to how stem cells can treat acquired hearing loss. Researchers believe that umbilical stem cells can regenerate new hair cells in the organ of corti, which are responsible for hearing loss.

A trial, inspired by a Duke University research with 30 patients, suffering from acquired loss of hearing, shows that cord blood transplants can be a treatment for sensorineural hearing loss due to mucopolysaccharidosis. The findings demonstrate that hearing loss can be easily measured. The unit is called ABR that is a count of functioning hair cells. If the transplant shows an improvement in ABR, it suggests the functioning hair cells are growing in number. In a previous trail, human umbilical cord blood stem cells were used to treat loss of hearing in a mice model, which resulted in replacement of hair cells. Baumgartner added, “There was a pretty significant improvement. In particular if the stem cell transplant was done before 25 months of age.

What Is An Autoclave Sterilizer?

What is Autoclave

An autoclave is possibly, one of the most important devices in the medical field. Autoclaves are used in sterilization. The benefit of using an autoclave is that it can reach temperatures higher than boiling water alone, so it can kill not only bacteria but also bacterial spores, which lean to be resistant. The autoclave is used in industry to “cure” some products during the manufacturing process. Autoclaves are also exercised in laboratories to declare items such as glassware and surgical equipment are disinfected. The autoclave comes in several types. One of the simplest autoclaves looks a great deal like a pressure cooker. It is a large pot with a gauge on top and bolts that fasten the top to the pot.

History

An autoclave was first created in 1879 by French microbiologist Charles Chamberlain. He worked with the famed Louis Pasteur on his study into sterilization and pasteurization.

Significance

Autoclaves are based on the principal that the boiling point of water increases when it is below pressure. At 15 pounds of pressure per square inch, the boiling point of water increases from 100 degrees Celsius to 121 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, all life forms are killed within 15 minutes.

Uses

Autoclaves are generally exercised in microbiology, medicine, sterilizing instruments for body piercing, veterinary science, dentistry, podiatry and metallurgy. The huge carbon-fiber combined parts for the Boeing 787, such as wing and fuselage parts, are healed in large autoclaves.

Features

Autoclaves are filled with water and work through creating steam within a surrounded environment, which builds up pressure. The air within the autoclave is gradually swapped with steam, which can reach higher temperatures than the air. High-temperature steam can surround and infiltrate the items, even reaching within the splits in stainless steel instruments. This process kills all bacteria, viruses and bacterial spores.

Benefits

Autoclaving allows materials to be sterilized within a qualified short time frame without the use of reagents. It also allows substances such as surgical and dental equipment to be recycled. Therefore, autoclaving is an ecologically friendly option.

Warning

Autoclaves can be tremendously dangerous. Pressure builds up inside the autoclave and if the door is not sealed correctly it can open with great force and cause injury. If liquids are autoclaved, care must be taken to have sufficient head space in the container and to not have it sealed. Liquids also have to be cooled slowly behind the procedure is finished.

Should I Home School?

“As parents we ask ourselves many things when it comes to raising our children…we worry about what they eat, what they watch, who they play with, how they behave themselves when we’re not around. Of course, we also worry about their schooling. But how many of us feel confident enough to take charge of our children’s education and what advantages are there to doing so?”

Seriously, have you ever thought about teaching your child? It’s quite a concept, isn’t it? The truth is, most people never dream of taking on the responsibility of their child’s education, at least, not in this day and age. It doesn’t even enter into the heads of most parents. Most don’t consider it an option because they have so much faith in the school system and the teachers who operate it. Well, is that truly the case or do most parents overlook the option of homeschooling their children because they simply don’t feel qualified. Most parents who think about homeschooling feel overwhelmed by the very idea. They stop dead thinking about how much work will be involved; how much patience they’ll have to maintain. They wonder, can I be the parent and the teacher? Will I have to learn all of the subjects? Why should I home school? These questions and more have risen every time I speak about homeschooling, every time I discuss the great benefits of this educational approach.

Home schooling does require time and energy, there’s no getting around this. But if you play your cards right and focus on getting your kids excited about learning, in time, you can leave most of the teaching up to them. What I mean by this, is the first few years of their life until the age of seven, you teach your children to read, write, and apply basic math skills..

Here are some other things to consider:

o Once your children have mastered the basic skills of learning, once they know how to read and apply numbers, then you can have them start working independently.

o Gradually, children can learn to teach themselves.

o In the beginning, homeschooling requires three to four hours of work a day, supplemented by the odd field trips.

o By the time your kids reach seven or eight years old, however, homeschooling only requires about one hour from you and about five to six hours from them every day.

o The major advantage of this approach to learning, however, is that your kids eventually develop a habit of studying independently.

Of course, most parents worry about having the patience to teach their kids the basics study skills. As a business woman, the idea of staying at home with my kids every day never really occurred to me as a lifestyle unto itself. On the other hand, I was very focused on raising my kids the proper way did. When I first started home schooling, the whole process took some getting used to; the process was both difficult and demanding, with the first two months being the hardest, like most new things we begin. Once my kids and I had settled into a routine, however, things started to become a lot easier. Only seven months later, homeschooling for me and for my kids is a piece of cake. It’s thrilling to see my kids really benefiting from the experience.

At the end of the day, the curriculum you choose also helps you to teach all the subjects relevant to a rounded education. As the teacher, all you have to do is follow the curriculum and the agenda that is written for you on a daily basis by home school advocates. You will learn as you go.

When it came to distinguishing between school and home, I began my homeschooling odyssey by explaining to my kids that when I am a teacher I will speak English only, and when I am a mom, I will speak Dari only. However you establish it, you need to make sure that your kids know that you have two different roles. In school time, my children get to be students who ask thousands of questions; as their teacher, I have to answer. In home time, I am teaching manners, and showing them what good behavior is. Above all, I’ve found that it’s important to always be the best person you can so your children have a good role model to follow.

So, why should you home school? There are many reasons:

1. To allow your child to learn at their level, and excel at their pace.

2. To teach them all the things you think are important, including religious studies.

3. To let them become creative and find the gifts they were blessed with.

4. To give them confidence in their abilities.

Pet Friendly Travel: How to Familiarize Your Pet With a Travel Carrier

Whether you’re planning a move with your pet, planning a getaway to a pet friendly hotel, or just taking Spot or Fluffy with you to run errands around town, making sure they are properly secured in your vehicle is essential.

One of the best ways to ensure that your precious pet stays safe in your vehicle is to have him travel in a pet travel carrier… also known as travel kennel and crate. However, before you do, it’s important to know the right way to do this. You must be sure to properly familiarize your dog or cat with the carrier before you set out on your road trip. The time it takes to do this depends on your pet.

It’s best to start your dog or cat out at an early age. It generally takes longer for your pet to become comfortable in a travel carrier as they get older. The first step is to choose the proper carrier. When shopping for a travel carrier, be sure it has proper ventilation and sturdy construction. In addition, the carrier should have a secure latch so that your pet cannot escape. As far as size, the carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. The price of a pet carrier varies depending upon the size, whether it’s hard sided or soft sided, and the brand. The starting price is generally around $20.

To familiarize your pet with the carrier, open the door of the carrier and place it in your home. Place your pet’s bedding, some favorite toys, and maybe some of his favorite treats in the carrier. Allow your pet to go in and out of the carrier at their leisure. Do this until your pet feels comfortable. Again, this may take a little time so be patient and don’t rush him.

When you are confident that your pet feels comfortable in the carrier, you can then place the carrier in the car. Start off by taking short rides and gradually build up to longer rides. Gauge the stress level of your pet and don’t push it. Short rides can be up and down the driveway if need be.

Ensure that your pet travel is safe. Pet travel carriers are a great option to ensure the well being of your pet when traveling by car. Just remember to start the familiarization process early if you have upcoming travel plans. Safe travels!
