Water gardening like several other gardening practices came out of Egypt around 4800 years ago. If you are thinking of adding some beauty to your backyard, consider a pond. Depending on the size and complexity, you have the option of hiring a contractor or buying a kit and doing it yourself.

As is the case with all types of gardens, adding a pond for your own water garden will require following plan.

The plan includes the following segments.

a) Choosing the right place

b) Siting the pond

c) Determining the Size of the pond

d) Constructing the pond

e) Stocking the pond

f) Maintaining the pond

Constructing a pond takes a fair amount of work. Choose a pond that fits in with the existing motif in the area where you want to put the pond. Is the area casual, formal, etc? Consider the amount of maintenance required and don’t forget the safety factor. Any area of standing water can be dangerous and lead to an accident and possibly to something much more serious such as drowning.

Place the pond in an area where it can be enjoyed by the family. The ideal place for a pond is at the end of the garden where it is secluded. Here, there won’t be a lot of foot traffic and the pond is likely to attract more wildlife.

Do you want your pond in the sun or shade? This is the next decision to be made. A thriving pond is a balance of plants and wildlife. Oxygen creates a healthy environment for everything that lives in the pond. Oxygenating plants provide the oxygen for a fresh and clean pond and oxygenating plants require sunlight.

Don’t place your pond close to trees and shrubs. Leaves will fall into the pond, rot and foul the water. Tree roots can grow into the pond and puncture the pond liner.

The size of the pond depends on the size of the yard. The pond must be proportionate to the yard. The depth of the pond should be at least 2 feet deep if you intend to put fish in it. Shallow water is more likely to evaporate in hot weather and freeze in cold weather. Marginal plants grown along the edge of the pond will require shelves to stand on. You may want to consider building a fountain in the pond. Fountains add beauty to the pond and are very relaxing.

To construct the pond, dig the hole and line it with a water proof liner. There are several ways to do this. A pond liner made of polythene or butyl rubber can be used. The pond can be lined with concrete or clay. And, a pre-formed plastic pond liner can be used. Incorporate the pumps, skimmers and waterfalls required to keep the water clean and aerated and flowing at the quality level required to support the plants and aquatic life in the pond.

When stocking the pond, it is best to have a mixture of submerged plants, emergent plants and floating plants. Submerged plants live completely under water. These are the oxygenating plants. Marginal plants live around the edges of the pond in containers standing in the water. Deep water plants have their roots underneath the water up to a foot and a half, approximately 18 inches of water. Then there are the free floating plants which float on top of the water and dangling their roots in the water. These plants shade the water and help control the temperature of the water. They also act as breeding places for wildlife.

Pond management is best done from the middle of fall into the first three weeks of winter. Pond management includes removing excess plants, taking out a small percentage of the wildlife (up to one third), topping off the water and maintaining a hole in the ice in the winter.

When planning to build your pond you will need to look at several things. These things will determine the size, placing, building, stocking and management of your water garden. All of these tasks are relatively easy. When you perform these several tasks in a quality fashion you will be rewarded with a beautiful water garden which will bring you many hours of satisfaction and joy.

Many projects seem a little daunting in the beginning. The construction of a pond and water garden may strike you the same way. Start! As you get into the project, you will find that is not as intimidating as you thought. In fact you may end up enjoying it.

With the surplus of new power tools having recently entered the industrial market, many of which being quite incredible, the short-list of this year’s most exciting new power tools has been surprisingly difficult to compile. With comprehensive tool line-ups (Makita, Dewalt, and Milwaukee each introduced a new line of cordless 12v power tools) and some acute power tool innovations that will change the way power tools are henceforth produced (like Bosch’s articulating miter saw and Senco’s pneumatic fusion technology), it seems there are more bar-raising power tools to kudo than can feasibly be mentioned. But, with effort to show no favor to any particular manufacturer or tool type, and in no particular order, let me briefly honor this year’s picks for the most intense, most innovative, or simply most awesome new power tools.

– Bosch’s GCM12SD Axial Glide Articulating Miter Saw:
Producing a virtually unparalleled smoothness of cut this Bosch saw is unbelievably precise and offers optimal operator control throughout every conceivable working condition. Tame the Wild Land is a book after my own heart. As a descendant of seventeenth and eighteenth century French Canadians, I’ve always been a lover of the period of history when those ancestors lived and have wanted to know more about it, but while most of what I’ve read has been about Quebec and the Great Lakes region, I’ve known little about the other French settlements, especially in Louisiana. This novel filled a huge gap in French-American history for me, and it was also highly entertaining-exactly what historical fiction should be.

The author, Patrick Shannon, has chosen for his main protagonist, Louis de St. Denis, a man I’d never heard of, but I should have. Shannon also happens to be a descendant of St. Denis. As an author myself, I have used my family history as source material for my own historical fiction, so I completely understand why Shannon would make such a choice, but I also know the pitfalls that can be encountered. Shannon avoids all those pitfalls, completely distancing himself from any romantic or exaggerated ideas about his ancestry to tell a story of heroism, adversity, difficulties, and star-crossed love.

Louis de St. Denis was born in Quebec but came to Louisiana to help a struggling French settlement survive and prosper. The novel opens in 1700, the year Louis arrives in Louisiana, in what is now Biloxi Bay, near the mouth of the Mississippi, and where a settlement was founded the year before and has been struggling. The novel is divided into two sections, the first documenting how the settlement struggles to exist during its first six years. A huge part of the challenge is dealing with the local “Indians”-a term Shannon does not shy away from for the more politically correct “Native American.” In fact, I admired that Shannon did not try to insert modern-day sensibilities into the story or his characters’ mouths as too many modern novelists do. Instead, he lets his characters be representative of their historical counterparts and the beliefs and prejudices of the time. I found the interactions the French characters had with the Indians to be fascinating-not only did I not realize so much of the area (Alabama, Natchez, etc.) was named for local Indian tribes, but I found the Indian customs rather horrifying-at one point, a chief dies, and it is customary to have forty Indians killed to go to death with him; when a French priest tries to prevent this unnecessary killing, a war nearly ensues.

Indians become a primary motivator for the second part of the novel as well. To keep the colony alive, the French realize they must trade with the Spanish, even though the Spanish have long refused to do so. A door to possible trade opens when a Spanish priest, who is denied missionary help by his own government, writes to the French, asking them to send priests to aid in his converting the Indian tribes. Louis de St. Denis heads up this mission, hoping it will allow him to introduce trade with the Spanish.

A series of complications ensue during Louis’ mission, including his being taken prisoner by the Spanish, being seen as a traitor by the French, and falling in love with a Spanish girl more than twenty years younger than himself-a star-crossed match that leads to opposition by the girl’s family.

I won’t give away how the story ends, but the novel left me wanting to know more about the history of Louisiana, Texas, and the French and Spanish presence there in the early eighteenth century, as well as more about Louis de St. Denis and more famous personages like Cadillac and LaSalle, who also influence the novel.

Shannon’s style is refreshing and entertaining for the reader. Rather than bog us down with historical details, which too many well-known historical novelists do, including James Michener and Ken Follett, Shannon remembers that his first job is to entertain us and to tell a story about his characters. He is sparse on description, but generous in writing dialogue that moves the story along, while sprinkling in occasional narrative passages to carry the reader to the next scene. I was rather reminded of the style of Evelyn Waugh in this respect.

I congratulate Shannon on this fine novel, and I look forward to reading more of his work as well as further exploring French-American history now that he has whet my interest. Ultimately, a good historical novelist should not educate so much as open the door for his reader to want further education about the historical period the novel has been set in. Shannon has done that very well, indeed.

If you are a resident of the United States there is no doubt that you may be vary familiar with the concept of Dragon Boating. Contrary to popular belief Dragon Boating is a concept that originated in the deep lands of China and was probably taken to the lands of the US by the Chinese immigrants and has developed into a great and exciting sport there.

A dragon boat consists of a narrow and very long boat that is powered by about 22 men seated in a line behind each other. This is a racing sport with many teams competing for the first position and decorating their boats with dragon heads and tails making it look like a Chinese dragon. This is why the name ‘Dragon Boat Racing’ came into being.
