Face Painting Safety – Do’s And Don’t’s

It’s not hard to understand why simple face painting is a fun project that many people enjoy getting into. You don’t even need any artistic inclinations – both amateurs and professionals can do it. It’s something children of all ages can also do and is an activity that people of all ages enjoy very much.

Whenever you involve kids in any activity, safety becomes a primary concern. In kids face painting, I have listed down some safety precautions that you need to take into consideration. In this article, I have chosen to put emphasis more on the “Do Not’s”, as these often tend to be overlooked.

DO choose art supplies carefully. There are a lot of so-called face make-up and paints out in the market today, but not all of them are safe. It may be comforting to see the “Non-Toxic” sign on the label, but don’t fall for it hook, line and sinker. Not everything labeled that way is safe for the skin, especially for very small kids.

DO NOT USE acrylic paint! This type of paint is not meant for the skin as it could contain very harmful chemicals and colorants that are normally used in craft painting.

DO NOT USE “washable” or watercolor markers! Like acrylics, these also have chemicals which can cause an allergic reaction on the skin or worse, respiratory distress (for kids who aren’t used to paint chemicals). A lot of people are allergic to craft paints, even though they only have a little amount accidentally spilled on their hand or other body parts. Imagine what it can do to a child.

DO NOT use metallic craft glitters for (as the name suggests) these are just used for arts and crafts, never for the skin painting or molding. The FDA has also mandated that glitters – often used with face paints – should be 0.008 microns in size or even smaller (very, very, very small indeed) as these would be the only ones safe for skin use.

DO make sure to buy FDA-approved face paints; these are the only ones that are safe to buy and safe to use on children.

DO make sure your that the children you will be painting on doesn’t have any allergies to the products that you’ll be using. The common make-up and face paints have ingredients that are similarly structured. So if you are a mother who has make-up at home, the simplest way to test for allergies is to smear some lipstick or gloss just below the child’s wrist. If it doesn’t break out in a small rash after 10 minutes, then you may proceed with face painting. If there is some redness and swelling, then you may need to postpone your session for the meantime.

DO NOT put paint on a face that has even the smallest of pimples. You should only paint on a face that is clear of acne. Remember that a painted face will eventually need to be cleaned. Rubbing on a sensitive part of the face may cause more soreness. Suggest painting on either the arm or another part of the skin that is blemish-free.

DO watch out for head lice. As a face-painter, it is your responsibility to check the child (your child or not) for head lice. To avoid a lice-epidemic in your work area, make sure that you (yes, you, the artist) tie your hair back (if you have long hair). If possible ask the child to pull back or put a band on their hair too. Wash your hands in between each child to avoid infecting the next child. Use alcohol or baby wipes to be sure.

DO thoroughly clean the brushes and the sponges that you use. Clean these materials with warm soap and water. Do not use alcohol as your cleaning agent to prevent bacteria from growing on your tools. It is good practice to throw away moderately used sponges to avoid bacterial and fungal contamination.

If you follow these safety protocols, rest assured that you and your child (or children) will have a happy, fun-filled face painting activity all the time.

How to Become a Clinical Psychologist

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical psychology refers to a branch of psychology that deals with the diagnoses and treatment of mental disorders, abnormal dispositions, and psychiatric problems. It is a combination of psychological science and treatment procedures of critical and complex human problems. A clinical psychologist is the person who deals with the complete process of prevention, estimation, analysis, and healing of mental disorders.

The American psychologist Lightner Witmer was the first person who coined the term ‘clinical psychology’ in a paper written in 1907. Witmer defined the subject as a study carried through ‘observation or experimentation’. At present days, it is one of the most popular sub-branches in the psychology field.

A clinical psychologist must be a sound person who is able to think objectively and neutrally. S/he must be wise and prudent enough to sort out the problems of people who are going through difficult stages of their life and guide them to the right way, so that they can overcome their troubles.

What Does A Clinical Psychologist Do?

The main duty of such professionals is to reduce the distress and improve the psychological condition of patients. They have their own unique ways to find the causes of mental distress and apply the means to bring positive changes to the patients’ lives.

Clinical psychologists generally offer treatments for:

i. Schizophrenia

ii. Depression

iii. Neurological disorders

iv. Addictive behaviors

v. Personal, professional, or familial relationship problems

vi. Eating disorders

vii. Learning disabilities; and many more

They may adopt a number of different treatment approaches. However, most of them have to perform some typical tasks, such as:

1. Using psychometric tests, observation of behaviors, interviews, etc. to assess patients’ behavior, abilities, and needs.

2. Be creative to devise and monitor perfect programs for therapy and counseling in collaboration with colleagues.

3. Developing and weighing up the provision of service for patients.

4. Acting as counselors and supporting caregivers.

5. Carrying out practical research in order to add to the evidence base of practice in various settings of healthcare sectors.

6. More experienced professionals may keep detailed paperwork about patients in order to track their progress.

In order to handle complex problems of patients, They often work in multidisciplinary team alongside other professionals.

What it Takes to be a Clinical Psychologist?

It is a long process to become a clinical psychologist. In fact, no other sub-branch of psychology takes so much time to be completed as this one does. However, the profession is worthwhile for investing such long period because they are allowed to enjoy a lot of freedom in their career.

The educational requirements for becoming a clinical psychologist are quite painstaking. After earning a bachelor degree, most clinical psychologists have to spend four to six years in graduate school.

Two kinds of degrees are available in the field of clinical psychology – a Ph.D. and a Psy.D. A Ph.D. program is theoretical in nature and is centered on research. On the other hand, a Psy.D. program is more pragmatic in nature and is practice-oriented. Without pursuing these two types of degrees, opportunities are also there for students to enroll into graduate programs that provide a terminal master’s degree.

In the USA, clinical psychologists have to pursue a doctorate degree. They are given training within clinical settings. In the U.K., students can pursue doctorate degree through programs funded by the National Health Service. These programs are very competitive in nature and are centered on both practice and research. Students who want to undertake any one of these programs must have to have experience along with an undergraduate degree in a psychology curriculum approved by the British Psychological Society.

Workplace

The work setting of clinical psychologists varies depending on the specialty or work area. The normal work areas for research psychologists are universities or colleges. They have to teach some courses in each semester besides performing their research responsibilities.

Some industrial psychologists work in corporations or companies. They help companies to manage their employees and key assets better.

Neuropsychologists and forensic psychologists are seen to work in private practice. Neuropsychologists also work in hospitals while forensic psychologists have to perform the clinical verification process in court and court settings.

However, clinical psychologists work in a variety of settings. They often go for private practice or work in public mental health sector. They also work in clinical counseling centers of universities and colleges where they help students to overcome some minor problems, such as adjusting to college life. They are also to be found in office setting working besides other types of mental health professionals, such as social workers and psychiatrists.

Salary

According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association in 2000, a licensed clinical psychologist earns an average of $87,015. In fact, the typical salary of a clinical psychologist ranges from $51,000 to $90,000.

The salary level may vary according to some factors such as years of practice and experience, level of education, workplace settings, and even on geographical location. A more experienced and highly educated psychologist will definitely earn more than a less educated and experienced psychologist does. Similarly, the salary of a psychologist practicing in a developed country will be higher than that of a psychologist practicing in a developing country.

Urban Industrial Furniture and Interiors

Industrial interior design style is characterized by concrete floors, brick walls, exposed wood ceiling beams and pipes, unfinished paint, rustic wood and earthy finishes. Mix it with some farmhouse styled furniture and urban polished surfaces and you get the trendier upstate look. A few industrial elements but tempered by smoother finishes such as gray sanded armoires and whitewashed cabinets with polished natural brass ornamentation. Create a careful balance of industrial style and refined elements with the aesthetic appeal of the rustic furnishings and colors that fuse into country style.

Using the Law of Attraction to Overcome Pain

Pain or Illness is a continuation of Negative Thoughts and Emotions.

We’ll show you how this works. First, you have a negative thought, which brings about a negative emotion. This happens a million times a day to most people. Second, this creates stress and resistance to the abundance of the cosmos. Third, if it is not corrected, this creates physical distress, pain and illness or disability. In this case, you have used the Law of Attraction to bring about pain. You can also use it to overcome pain.

What do we do if we have a pain? Immediately stop focusing on it and worrying about the cause of the pain. This is the worst thing you can do. Look at it, wherever it is, and accept that you are suffering from resistance. Say to the toe, or the joint, or your neck, whatever is telling you of the stress, “Thank you for informing me of this stress. I hear you well. I will soon let it go.”

And then, set about finding a solution to the stress you have somatized in your body. Do not attack the apparent cause of the pain, but find instead a way to add more joy and well-being back into your life. Turn on the light in that dark part of your soul. Find a way to open the spigot to the Creator/Universe.

Opening the Spigot or Aligning with the Stream of Well-Being

Resistance is the only reason the spigot was closed, or seemed to be closed. Resistance is caused by focusing on lack rather than abundance. Allowing is caused by focusing on what is wanted.

Our desires are always in alignment with our Higher Power which is always in communication with Source/Divinity/Creator. When we allow our desires to fill us with joy, then we are in “allowing” and opening the spigot. But if we use our desires to fill ourselves with a sense of lack or poverty or ill health, then we are in resistance (closing the spigot) and this will cause negative emotions, stress and then physical distress as we have mentioned. So, let’s use our desires to open the spigot instead.

As Abraham teaches us through the Hicks, “make a commitment to yourself to feel good.” This simple act will inspire more productive thoughts and alert you every time you, as a force of habit, are thinking resentful or powerless thoughts. When this happens, switch to more harmonious and joyful pictures or feelings. Picture yourself with a warm buttered piece of homemade bread, or sitting in front of a beautiful fireplace, or standing on a mountain top, on a glorious sunny day on your new skis, deciding which perfect path to take down the mountain. You will see more clearly the way to step into your more healthful and abundant future.

Keep your abundance pictures and feelings close at hand to use any time you get that warning nudge that you have accepted a negative thought or feeling. You don’t want to erase the negative thoughts anymore than you can erase darkness, but you simply want to turn on the light in that corner of your heart or mind.

This will open the spigot of allowing abundance. This will activate the Law of Attraction and eliminate pain.

Appalachian Vineyard Flooring – Wine Name But Hardwood Floors

When Anderson Hardwood Floors puts time into making a new product line they think things through. Consumers asked for wider plank flooring with some distressing and a real “vintage” look. Appalachian Vineyard collection was the answer Anderson thought the whole country deserved, and they were right. Then the designers at the Anderson Design Center in Clinton, SC went to work creating the most beautifully hand distressed and hand stained hardwood products. The whole collection is absolutely breathtaking.

The main focus of the Appalachian Vineyard collection is the three maple colors available. The maple planks as well as the whole collection come in 6-1/2″ wide engineered construction. As well as being 6-1/2″ wide the Vineyard collection is distressed for the vintage or worn look that home owners have come to enjoy. In the maple the three colors are Vineyard Maple Chablis, Vineyard Maple Madera, and Vineyard Maple Chateau. All three have colors of wine related products and really appeal to high end consumers.

The next two products offered in the Vineyard collection from Anderson are the distressed hickory products. Hickory is the hardest domestic specie ranging in hardness from 1800 – 2300 psi on the Janka scale. This product on average is 30-50% harder than American oak products. Add that to a wide plank distressed real hickory wood veneer and you have got a dynamite hardwood floor that you and your guests will love discussing over a nice glass of wine and cheese. In the Appalachian Vineyard hickory products the two colors are Vineyard Hickory Cabernet and Vineyard Hickory Tuscany. Both colors are outstanding visually and will add significant value to your home.

Last but certainly not least is my personal favorite, the Vineyard Fumed Birch Pomerol. When you see this hardwood flooring product your bottom lip will actually drop. The fuming process brings out so many colors and marbles the wood grain so well that you will never find another floor that looks that this one. The fuming and distressing process creates a work of art right on your floor with tons of color variation. This floor will definitely be the talk of the cocktail party.

Appalachian Vineyard flooring comes backed by a brand new 50 year finish warranty. This is the longest finish warranty in the hardwood flooring industry to date. Put that together with a trusted name in flooring like Anderson hardwood floors and you could not go wrong. All of the distressing is done by hand as well as hand rubbed staining process. Vineyard hardwood is a classic addition to any home so find a sample today and start living the dream.

Broken Heart First Aid: Self-Help for Those First Few Weeks

The person you hoped to spend your life with has left you, for whatever reason, and your heart is broken. Initially, that pain and heart-ache is unbearable and you don’t know how you’re going to get through the next minute, let alone the next day.

Obviously, you need to go through a grieving process for the lost relationship, and that will take time. However, you can help yourself through the first acute stages of pain and distress with these simple, natural remedies and healing exercises.

Crystal Healing

Take a piece of Rose Quartz or Rhodochrosite crystal. Cleanse it in running water, and then keep the crystal with you at all times. You can also hold the crystal and focus on its energy while breathing slowly for a few minutes. Mentally make a connection with the crystal, and ask its energy to interact with your own. The energies of these crystals resonate with the heart centre, and the pink colour has the energy of love. It will help to heal and nurture the energy of your Heart Chakra.

Bach Flower Remedies

Get yourself the following Bach Flower Remedies (available from any health-food store): Rescue Remedy, White Chestnut and Sweet Chestnut. Rescue Remedy helps with the shock and trauma, White Chestnut helps quieten the thoughts that go round and round your head, and Sweet Chestnut helps alleviate extreme anguish.

Add four drops of each remedy to 10ml of brandy or vinegar (choose vinegar if you are taking other medications) and then make the mixture up to about 30ml with water. Take four drops of the mixture four times a day, or more frequently if you feel distressed. The remedy is perfectly safe and you can take as much as you wish without ill effects. It does not need to be refrigerated.

If you feel extremely distressed, take four drops of undiluted Rescue Remedy directly on your tongue. Repeat this every fifteen minutes until you feel calmer.

Coral Colour Therapy

The colour energy which will help you most is coral; coral is a mixture of pink and yellow. In colour psychology, pink is the colour of unconditional love, and yellow is joy. The resulting coral colour is very special in colour healing. Contained within coral we have self-love, self-acceptance and self-respect. This colour makes us feel good about ourselves. It honours our sensitivity. It nurtures us, and it allows us to blossom. Whenever you are feeling vulnerable, devastated, dejected or rejected, the energy of coral is like being given a big hug. Use as much of this colour as you can, as it will be hugely supportive to you at this time: wear coral clothes and jewellery, find some coral-coloured bubble-bath, wrap yourself in a coral blanket, if you don’t like the colour, you can wear coral underwear!

This healing exercise is also very supportive. Sit or lie quietly, and imagine that you are completely surrounded by a soft coral-coloured light. Visualise the colour soaking through your skin, sinking into your muscles, your bones, and your blood. Imagine that you are breathing the coral energy deep into your lungs. Let the energy soak into your heart. Imagine it getting stronger and stronger with every in-breath. Feel your heart pumping the colour around your body. When you feel that the coral energy has filled every single cell of your body, imagine the energy cleansing the pain and heart-ache from you, making your cells clean and renewed.

Using these simple healing techniques will take the edge off the anguish of those first few days and weeks. It will also clear the energy signature of shock and trauma from your cellular memory. This is particularly important if you want to avoid the trauma sabotaging your life and relationships in the future.

As the shock wears off, you will move into the next stage of processing the loss, and will begin to regain your well-being. Remember that whatever the reason for your relationship breakup, you are worth looking after, and are deserving of being loved for who you are.

If Broccoli Is So Good for Me, Why Does It Make Me Sick After Weight Loss Surgery?

People in pursuit of healthy weight management know to stick close to the veggie tray at parties and buffets. After all, vegetables are good healthy food full of beneficial vitamins, nutrients and fiber. But some vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables like the ubiquitous broccoli and cauliflower, can cause severe gastric upset when eaten raw by patients of gastric weight loss surgery. In fact, there are many examples of weight loss surgery patients who have experienced gastric distress so severe after eating raw broccoli or cauliflower that a trip to the emergency room was needed.

The reason weight loss surgery patients of all procedures (gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, adjustable gastric banding or lap-band) are prone to discomfort after eating raw cruciferous vegetables is a matter of balance. The vegetables are rich in enzymes which are believed to aid digestion. However, due to the shortened gastric tract and loss of stomach acid the vegetables cannot be fully digested in their short trip through the intestinal tract. The problem is compounded by the presence of cellulose, the dietary fiber in the vegetables that requires intestinal bacteria to process. Even without gastric weight loss surgery many humans lack enough intestinal bacteria to break down the cellulose enough to avoid symptoms of gas, bloating, and cramping.

After weight loss surgery many patients are intently focused on becoming healthy and in control of their weight through proper diet and nutrition and increased daily activity. These are admirable pursuits which often lead to the conundrum over eating good healthy vegetables at the risk of severe gastric distress. Frustrated patients wonder, If it is so good for me why does it make me feel so bad? Good question. There are a few measures that may be taken to reduce the discomfort that follows eating raw vegetables so we can have our nutrients and enjoy them too. Take a look:

  • Experiment cautiously. If you do not know how you will respond to raw vegetables go easy at first and avoid discomfort or embarrassment that may come from eating too much of a good thing. In addition, remember that from day to day foods will sit differently. Always practice restraint while you get a feel for how food is setting with you that day.
  • Lightly steam or parboil vegetables to begin breaking-down the cellular structure thus helping the intestinal acid get busy more quickly with digestion. Remember, if you cannot digest the vegetable you will not be able to absorb the vitamins and nutrients in the vegetable. To serve the steamed or parboiled vegetables chilled simply prepare them in advance, drain of water and pat dry. Plate, cover and chill. Then serve cold with a lightly seasoned veggie dip made from yogurt which contains healthy bacteria that will aid in digestion. Avoid dairy-based dips, such as those made with sour cream, as this may increase the chance of stomach discomfort.
  • Take a digestive enzyme as directed prior to or shortly after eating raw vegetables. There are many digestive enzyme supplements available at reasonable cost. Many weight loss surgery patients report that papaya enzyme is effective in reducing digestive discomfort. According to one maker of papaya enzyme the dietary supplement contains “papain, a proteolytic enzyme and a popular ingredient in dietary supplements used for digestion. Taken after meals, it is a perfect natural supplement that may assist in digestion and may help reduce the effects of poor digestion, including heartburn and gas.” As with all dietary supplements keep in mind the FDA does not evaluate these claims or approve supplements for their claimed use. Consumers should consult with a health care professional before using any dietary supplement.
  • Chew, chew, chew. Remember that digestion begins in the mouth and it is critical to chew completely all raw vegetables in order to give your gastric system the best conditions under which to digest food and benefit from the vitamins and nutrients it contains.

What Are Primitives? Collecting Primitives To Decorate Your Home

Primitives: Time Worn, Simplistic and Very Collectible:

Primitives are items that convey a more simplistic lifestyle and a time gone by. With warm and muted colors and natural distressed wear, each piece has a story to tell. The primitive piece may have represented a well used item or toy in someone’s life that lived many years ago. Some primitives are just hand carved wood objects that serve no purpose other than as a novelty.

Your interest in Primitives may have begun from simply stepping into a shop or antique mall and finding a old, time worn piece that caught your eye and started an interest in items from the past. Many people these days decorate their entire homes to recapture that time-worn, comfortable look that reflects a simpler time.

The great thing about collecting Primitives is that perfection is not required, unlike many other types of antiques. In fact, the less perfect the piece the better. You may find yourself drawn to pieces with more distress lines and character, the appeal of chipped paint, and surfaces worn smooth by years of use.

Dolls are another wonderful example of Primitives. You can imagine, back in the olden days, children from families of meager means cherished these faceless and less than perfect dolls which were made for them by their Mothers or other relatives using whatever materials were available at the time. Today, many artists make reproduction Primitive Dolls. These dolls may not be authentic but they do capture the time-worn appearance that their authentic counterparts had.

The world of Primitives is so extensive it is impossible to go into detail on all the wonderful Primitive pieces out there. Some collectors enjoy collecting and displaying crockery, quilts, toys, wool rugs, hand made tools, and dolls. Other people collect Americana primitives, old kitchenware items, pails, baskets, butter molds, washboards and hand painted boxes and chests.

Creating reproduction Primitives is also fun. You can find that items from any time period can be made to look Primitive. For example, you could take a brand new dresser and transform it into a reproduction time-worn piece simply with a bit of paint and a sander or paint and specialty finishes such as crackle.

Simple is the word when it comes to describing Primitives, second to “worn or distressed”. Times were simple in the 1800-1900’s and families worked hard and with what little they had. They were creative in making available materials into useful things and nothing was wasted.

As you continue on your journey of interest in Primitives you will find pieces of history that give you comfort and remind you that the simple things in life are the most important. Primitives warm your home, are restful to look at and most of all they warm your heart.

Dogs and Psychosis

The dictionary defines psychosis as:

“…a mental disorder characterized by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality.”

Psychologists and psychiatrists may argue indefinitely as to where to draw the line between neurotic and psychotic behaviors, and it is no doubt difficult to discern symptomatic differences at that common junction; but, when one focuses upon the outside extremes of each condition, the differences become obvious, even in dogs.

A neurotic dog may exhibit chronic anxiety, fear, hyperactivity, obsessive behavior, and inappropriate responses to stimuli. Truly psychotic dogs, however, are deranged. Their behavior is acute and unpredictable. It ranges the spectrum from manic highs to deep depression, and tends to be dangerous and destructive to the dog as well as to other animals and humans with which the dog comes into contact.

Many of these behavioral characteristics are sometimes exhibited by non-psychotic dogs that are “having a bad day.” Others may be troubled by some distressing ailment that is temporarily affecting their behavior. When the distress is gone, the behavior returns to normal. The difference between these dogs and the truly psychotic animals is that the psychotic animals seem to be completely unaware of the nature of their destructive behavior. The psychotic dog is not misbehaving; it is simply not able to control its actions.

Dogs suffering from psychosis often have periods of intense violent rage for no apparent reason. They injure themselves, attack inanimate objects, and attack anyone unfortunate enough to be in their aggressive path. They often do not respond to outside stimuli. Their moods quickly change from manic to depressive. Some psychotic dogs will not eat to the extent that they will actually die of starvation.

A dog’s erratic behavior more likely to be diagnosed as psychotic if one or more of the following conditions are present in the dog’s history: an accidental overdose of drugs, extensive corticosteroid drug therapy, distemper before three months of age, a serious parasitic infection before six months of age, diabetes, a history of severe beatings, an injury to the spine or the head, and extreme psychological trauma.

The pattern of the occurrences of psychosis in dogs fairly well parallels the occurrence of psychotic disease in humans. Some dogs have a genetic condition that reveals itself with destructive behavior early in life. Others lead normal lives until, at a certain age, serious psychotic behavior is exhibited.

The mental health of dogs is of interest and concern to veterinarians. Some specialize in the evaluation and treatment of these mental diseases, but psychosis in dogs does not enjoy the same level of scientific research that is invested in studying human psychiatric problems. Most owners, while willing to invest considerable sums of money to treat physical ailments with the proven hope of a cure, are not willing to incur similar costs to speculatively treat their dog’s mental disease. Truly psychotic humans receive professional psychiatric care, in a secure residential facility if necessary. Dogs that exhibit serious psychotic behavior are euthanized.

EFT For Babies

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is like acupuncture without the needles. It works by stimulating the flow of energy through the body. There is little medical proof of the effectiveness of EFT but the results seem to be quite astounding. Many people have claimed complete cures from medical conditions which traditional treatments had not been able to relieve.

Whether you believe in EFT or not, the treatment is non-invasive and has no known side effects. Therefore, it is a very safe treatment for babies. Obviously if the baby is ill or distressed, a medical opinion should be sought. This treatment is only advised as a way to comfort a healthy child, not as an alternative to proper medical care.

There has been some success in treating colic or wind pains. There are also stories of success in getting newborn babies into a regular sleep pattern in a short period. Distressed newborns have responded to medical staff using EFT as well as traditional methods.

Babies may fear separation or lack of milk. There may be a fear of pain or illness, which is distressing the baby. If these fears are addressed while tapping, they seem to ease the baby. When tapping a newborn, use a very gentle touch. It is also a good idea to tap with the mother as often the bond between baby and mother is still so strong any upsets or discomforts for the mother may be transferred to the baby.

Some babies do not like to be tapped, but respond well to gentle circular rubbing. If the baby does not want to be touched in any place, just skip that point and move to the next. EFT has been quite effective in relieving the discomfort of teething in babies. It is less invasive than pain medication, and the baby seems to sleep better, without having to wake up in pain when the medication wears off during the night.

Gary Craig has an excellent website with many updates from professionals who use EFT. There are stories of good results in the treatment of babies using EFT.
