The Effectiveness of Chiropractic Care in Work Injuries

Injuries from work can cause severe and debilitating symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling. A worker may also experience reduced work productivity, temporary or permanent disability, inability to perform job tasks, lost time from work, and an increase in worker’s compensation costs. Such problems may result from work that includes lifting heavy items, as well as from office work, such as sitting at a computer for long periods of time.

Musculoskeletal disorders related to work are the leading workplace injury in the United States. Chronic musculoskeletal conditions are a major cause of morbidity, disability, psychological distress, and sleep disorders. Musculoskeletal problems are the most common cause of chronic disability, with over 50% being accounted for by low back pain which is a complex condition, involving contributions from personal and work related factors. The increase in work related back pain and disability occurs faster than any other form of disability.

Low back pain is among the most common medical complaints in the United States. An estimated 65% of low back disorders are work related. They have been reported as one of the most expensive conditions for working-age adults. Ergonomic and postural techniques of bending, twisting, and heavy lifting, and prolonged certain positions and actions such as sitting, standing, walking and motor vehicle driving have been associated with occupational low back pain.

Often viewed as musculoskeletal system specialists, chiropractors have the knowledge and training to deal with work injuries. Chiropractic is one of the more widely used and accepted practices within alternative medicine. It has been increasingly accepted in recent years, as partially evidenced by widespread health insurance coverage.

The effectiveness of chiropractic treatment has been shown by returning injured workers back to work quicker and more affordably than other forms of care. Several studies found that chiropractic patients experienced fewer lost workdays compared to medically treated patients. It was reported that patients who received chiropractic care returned to work on average 2-3 days sooner than patients who received medical care.

Chiropractors favor spinal manipulative therapy to reduce pain, increase mobility, and restore the biochemical and anatomical relations between spinal segments to facilitate rapid recovery. The spinal manipulation therapy has been reported to prevent the development of a chronic disorder associated with immobility and result in successful recovery, especially when combined with strengthening and conditioning exercises and good body mechanics to help restore and maintain health.

Other work injuries that chiropractors treat include knee, hip, and joint injuries, rotator cuff injuries, and a variety of injuries unique to construction workers and firefighters. While many workplace accidents can turn into the types of work injuries that cause long term pain and damage, visiting a chiropractor is the best way to help relieve the pain. Even the mildest injury can sometimes cause permanent disability. Considering chiropractic care will not only help heal the injury, but it will also provide serious stress relief as well.

Facial Hair in Women – What Can You Do About It?

Facial hair growth in women is something that many of us find concerning. Assuming that you are not genetically inclined to facial air (Mediterranean, Jewish and Eastern European ancestry) or have a family history of facial hair growth in women), it could be a number of things.

One of the most common is hormonal imbalance. Women have both estrogens and androgens (male hormones). As we age, the levels of both hormones naturally decline. However, the ratio between the differences declines and it can look as if we suddenly have more of the male hormones, and therefore stray hairs. In addition, there are some medications that can stimulate the growth of stray, darker, coarser hair such as phenytoin, cyclosporine, anabolic steroids, combination medications with testosterone such as estratest, and minoxidil (used for high blood pressure as well as baldness in men).

Sometimes though, excessive facial/body hair can be a result of physical and medical issues. For example, polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity (adipose tissue can produce androgens). Occasionally it can be related to adrenal tumors. In these cases one will see more than just the occasional stray hair on the face. If this is happening to you, see your health care provider.

So what can do you about it? Women have been looking for ways to permanently remove hair for years. There does not seem to be an easy fool-proof permanent way to deal with facial hair.

Treatments include:

  • Makeup Radio frequency
  • Hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
  • Shaving
  • Waxing
  • Laser
  • Electrolysis
  • Medications – Vaniqua – a prescription cream

According to many dermatologists, electrolysis seems to be the only method for permanent removal. Vaniqua, which is relatively new in the past few years does not seem to work for all women. The long term effectiveness is unknown at this time.

As with most things, there does not seem to be a one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of the stray facial hair. You will most likely need to try various treatments and see what works for you. However, keep in mind if the hair seems excessive or you have concerns, please speak with your health care provider for further evaluation.

The Poor Man’s Lobster No More, Pollock is Going Gourmet

As fish go, Pollock has often only been considered an economical choice is a sea of high-end alternatives. Featured in recipes like Poor Man’s Lobster, which calls for your to boil it in salted water, sprinkle it with vinegar and then boil it again before serving it with melted butter, just like the lobster it isn’t.

However, Pollock recipes are resurfacing in the droves with a gourmet twist thanks to the economic crisis and ecological consciousness. With classic recipes like fish and chips going green and gourmet, requiring top grade sustainable fish, groundnut oil, micro brewed beer batter, and “chips” baked and served with rosemary, Pollock recipes are getting a facelift too.

Gone are the days of pretending to be lobster, today Pollock can be added to a chowder or shine as the main star. With its fisheries tightly managed, its sea-friendly ranking high, and its flaky white meat, it is a choice that satisfies all parties (and pocketbooks), winning praises from consumers, chefs and ocean advocates alike.

Browsing cookbooks, online or in print, it is easy to find Pollock recipes that scan taste buds and ethnic influences. Marinated in a combination of soy sauce, rice wine, and a spice combo of fennel seeds, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, anise, and peppercorns, Five-Spiced Alaska Pollock is a recipe rich in flavor and a far from bland.

Lean and firm, low in fat and rich in protein, Pollock is also the basis of many heart-healthy recipes. Bake simply with a salt and pepper rub and serve with garlic and ginger sauteed broccoli florets. If you are looking for a breaded recipe, but don’t want to fry, crust your Pollock instead with potato and serve the fillets with a side of stewed tomatoes and baked macaroni and cheese.

Pollock can also replace Halibut, like in a summer fish taco, calling for fillets of Esther. Marinade fillets for a few hours in a combination of peach sauce, white wine, and canola oil before grilling. Break apart and serve in warm tortillas, along with a mixture of shredded cabbage, salsa and avocado, plus a touch of fat-free sour cream.

When looking for Pollock recipes, you should feel only as limited as your culinary preference. Quick dishes and gourmet spreads are all options with this versatile and delicate fish.

Face Lightening Creams

Since time immemorial, humans have been trying to not only lighten the dark color of their skin but also to reduce the dark spots and blemishes (moles and birthmarks) on their faces. (Face lightening cream, skin whitening, skin bleaching, cosmetic whitening, etc. are all cosmetic methods used trying to whiten or reduce the dark complexion on your face or skin.) But, be careful about what you apply on your skin, especially your face. The best methods are preferably the ones used by our ancestors-natural products, as much as possible.

Face lightening products today come in different forms-creams, lotions, soaps, etc. However, as the blemishes occur owing to the production of melanin (a pigment triggered by an enzyme that produces color) in your body, you need to use lotions or gels containing ingredients that are melanin-inhibiting combined with sunscreen and a course of retinoid. Subsequently, follow this with a chemical peel depending on the results of this face lightening cream.

Topical treatments-Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone inhibits the production of melanin in your body and is considered by many dermatologists as a safer and cheaper option than the other face lightening cream (described above). Conversely, with constant use, hydroquinone can cause minor irritation to the skin. However, as many skin whitening creams contain glucocorticoids or mercury iodine, hydroquinone’s reaction on the skin is considered to be minor. Furthermore, this product does not bleach your face; it only lightens the color of your skin.

Tretinoin, Kojic acid, Azelaic acid

Hydroquinone, used with a combination of tretinoin and cortisone, acts as a powerful face lightening cream. Azelaic acid, an extract of grains, such as barley or wheat, acts as an inhibitor of melanin in your body. This product is not only used to reduce acne, but also as a skin lightening cream. Kojic acid is a by-product of rice. But, owing to its unstable conditions, it is not used much by the cosmetic companies as an ingredient in a face lightening cream. Finally, there are also other combinations that you can use as whitening for your face with hydroquinone. Although it is not as effective as you would expect, azelaic or kojic acid combined with glycolic acid and hydroquinone has shown results in whitening of the face.

Natural Alternatives

Yes, there are natural ingredients that can inhibit melanin production in your body. Extracts from bearberry, mulberry, white and paper mulberry, and Mitracarpus scaber contain arbutin, a very natural form of face lightening cream. Research in extracts from licorice and pomegranate, Vitamin E and C, etc. could be used in face lightening creams.

AHA (Alpha hydroxy acid) is what we all are familiar with. But, even though it does contain some melanin inhibiting ingredients, it is used mainly as a sunscreen and does have the ingredients to exfoliate your facial skin. There are other forms of treatments, such as the laser and cryosurgery (usage of liquid nitrogen) treatments. But, here too, there are debilitating side effects.

There are many face lightening creams in the market. A note of caution- the vast literature available on the negative side effects of many of these creams is true.

Take the precaution of taking your doctor’s advice before going in for a face lightening cream.

Daredevil Ski Holidays – Speed Riding

What’s the quickest way to get from the summit of Mt. Bellecote, whereon sits the popular ski resort of La Plagne, to its foot, 3400m below?

By skiing, of course. But before strapping on a brand new pair of Fischer skis, taking a moment to repent your sins, and launching yourself from the heady perch with the careless abandon of a man or woman who has nothing left to live for, there’s another piece of equipment you’ll need. A parachute.

This combination of ski and parachute means that you’re no longer skiing, but speed riding.

Speed riding takes the familiar principle of skiing down a slope and transports it to the mountainside, throwing in rocky outcrops, sheer drops and the risk of avalanche for good measure. Obviously, anybody attempting this under normal circumstances would be on a fast track to a broken neck, but the element of paragliding that the parachute adds ensures an as near to smooth descent as is possible. Basically, when you run out of agreeable ground you take to the air.

This most exhilarating of extreme sports was invented late in 2003 by a group of paragliders, including amongst their number Francois Bon who has gone on to become one of the leading lights in the sport. Early in 2008 Bon could be seen on the BBC’s flagship Top Gear show, putting the sport of speed riding to the test when he raced Richard Hammond, driving an Audi RS6, down the side of a mountain. The combination of skiing and paragliding won.

Specially customised canopies are utilised, around half the size of the ones used in paragliding, which causes the daring skier to skim along the surface and when the time comes effectively float over any oncoming obstacle. This is achieved by tugging a cord which causes you to lift into the air, but not high enough so that you’re sent sailing off at a tangent for an abrupt meeting with an opposing cliff face. That is why considerably smaller canopies are used. They’re also used for braking, which can be quite handy when hurtling face first down the side of a mountain at speeds of up 75mph.

As with any extreme sport, speed riding is extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, and dangerous even when you do. However, it has a better safety record than other similar pursuits and it is possible to buy insurance if you’ve the inclination to take it up.

Something which a great many skiers are doing. The popularity of this literally breathtaking variation upon the more familiar pastime of skiing has swept across the ski resorts and communities of Europe, spreading from its birthplace in France, along the Alpine backbone to Switzerland, and onwards to Italy, Germany and Austria. Equipment is designed and sold specifically for the purpose and there are tournaments, events and championships springing up all over the place.

An ability to ski is naturally a prerequisite for anybody seriously considering swelling the ranks of those already entrenched in the sport of speed riding, and some experience of paragliding is also a benefit. There are instructors available and designated practice slopes to bring you up to speed.

So next time you’re on a skiing holiday and you’ve taken time out to scale one of the nearby mountain peaks, only to realise you’ve left your chalet door open; strap on your skis and parachute and take to the air. You’ll be home before you know it.

Vestibular Disorder Or Migraine With Vestibular Symptoms?

The term “vestibular migraine” is not a real medical classification. A more accurate description would be a migraine with vestibular symptoms.

The vestibular system in the inner ear, is one that maintains balance and equilibrium. Therefore vestibular symptoms are dizziness, vertigo (a sense of spinning or motion when at rest), or loss of balance and disequilibrium.

Basilar migraines can also present with vertigo and tinnitus. Menieres disease (a condition with similar symptoms) is often diagnosed when in fact the patient my be experiencing migraines with symptoms of vestibular disorder. It is known that people with migraines are more apt to experience Menieres and vice versa.

Patients with migraines with these symptoms can experience just vestibular symptoms or the symptoms along with migraine head pain. The MRI brain scans of these patients are usually normal.

Though there have been NO control trials demonstrating efficacy for migraines with vestibular symptoms, the following drugs are used by physicians. For frequent or chronic vestibular migraines, daily calcium channel blockers (a blood pressure medication), SSRI’s (a type of anti-depressant), and anti epileptic drugs. Also triptan drugs are used for acute attacks but once again there are no trials showing that they help with the vestibular symptoms.

Though there have been organized clinical trials demonstrating the prophylactic efficacy of high-dose riboflavin and magnesium for treating chronic migraines, there are NO trials showing these ingredients, either alone or in combination reduce or eliminate vestibular symptoms.

Several chronic migraine patients with the symptoms of vestibular disorder who were using a combination of high dose riboflavin, magnesium and feverfew extract in a supplement called MigreLief, report a decrease in these symptoms and an increase in the time they felt their balance and equilibrium were closer to normal.

If additional patients report these benefits a clinical trial of this combination may be warranted.

Genealogy Video – Just One Word Can Unlock a World

When it comes to genealogy video, a single word can make a world of difference. A single word can be like a compass direction, or the combination to a safe. The right word and the right combination of circumstances can start a journey, unlock a world. Because like all genealogy, genealogy video is a quest and a quest whose goal is often obscured.

So, what do we mean by “one word can unlock a world”?

Take a simple example. Let’s say that you are researching your grandmother for a genealogy video you have in mind. Let’s say you find out Grandmother’s maiden name. That will help you track down a whole bunch of ancestors through, say, old census records. It can reveal even more. Take the Italian name “Fortunato” – the word means fortunate. It was very common for the Catholic clergy to give orphans that name. If you have a name like that turn up in your searches it is likely that you have an orphan. Sadly, it probably means that you cannot go back any further.

One word may be a place on a map. Can you find out the town where your ancestors came from? Knowing the town may help you discover customs and traditions; history; birth, death and marriage records; and maybe even distant cousins. It’s a great bonus to include footage of the old family town, and maybe some relatives still living there, in your genealogy video.

It maybe that during your research for your genealogy video, you discover a cause of death. With all the recent discoveries in genetic medicine, the condition which caused an ancestor’s death could make an important difference to someone’s medical diagnosis or even treatment. One word about a cause of death could also link a person to a specific time and place – Spanish Flu in 1919? An industrial accident perhaps? More than one death was connected to dust inhalation during the Great Depression.

A single word – the answer to a simple question – can also help uncover a personality that you may be featuring as part of your genealogy video. What about their favorite song? Knowing the answer to that might reveal the subject’s lighter side and help locate them in the culture of their time. Maybe you can find it and download it! Sometimes a particular song can help define a person – the Paul Anka song “My Way” speaks to more than one person who forged their own path in life.

That word might be a number too. Let’s say that one word is the number of children born to a grandmother. Children mean cousins. And cousins can be your best friends when it comes to your genealogy video. If you are wondering where all the family photographs went, more than likely they are they are with one of your cousins. And if you get really lucky, one of your cousins will turn out to be a genealogist with a whole trove of information that you can use in your genealogy video.

Another head start provided by a single word is the name of a passenger vessel. Ocean liners have records, passenger lists, ports of embarkation and destination – even personal information about the passengers. From ship lists you can find out if your ancestors were literate, what village they came from, how much money they had in their pocket on embarkation, who they were staying with then they arrived, and who they traveled with.

In the military context, that one golden word may be a service number. The military across the globe usually keep marvelous records (if you ignore that terrible fire in our National Archives in 1973 that destroyed about 20 million personal records – especially Army personnel discharged between 1912 and 1960). So if your genealogy video will include service personnel, a word may unlock the government’s vault.
