Entrepreneur – What The Skillionaire’s List Can Teach YOU

If you are like me and wonder how your life would have panned out if you had been given the chance to earn a degree, spare a thought for those who defied the odds and made themselves a massive fortune from their entrepreneurial skills alone. If you feel denied because life didn’t give you a high five, read on for more on ‘Entrepreneur – What the Skillionaire’s List Can Teach You!’

Hairdressers, Cooks, chefs, motor racers, and footballers (to name but a few) have all found their way onto the latest ‘skillionaires’ list using nothing but a skill and zest for life. Choosing the vocational route instead of university, each one has hauled themselves up by their entrepreneurial bootstraps to become a success in life.

So what is a ‘Skillionaire’ anyway and what can the list teach you? Good question – I’m glad you asked!

A ‘Skillionaire’ is one of a 100 vocational millionaires living in the UK who didn’t attend university, didn’t marry into money, didn’t wiggle their way into Big Brother, didn’t rob a bank or steal from others, but still managed to earn wealth totalling a massive £17.6bn (around $28.79bn) between them. Some are old and a few are young – but all are very wealthy indeed!

Unfortunately, there is not enough room to list all the names here, but you can Google it for yourself. None of the 100 names on the list ever received an academic qualification in their life.

The famous names include Eric Clapton, Jamie Oliver, Delia Smith, Rick Stein, Stella McCartney, Billy Connolly, and many others, but the point is – all managed without a degree and chose the vocational, entrepreneurial route instead of university.

The phrase ‘Skillionaire’ might make you pause for thought. You might really fancy seeing your name on the Skillionaire’s List some day as an entrepreneur, but are not sure what to bring to the table. Where can you start?

1) The first place an entrepreneur starts is right where you are. If you are in work, be thankful – you have something that millions of others can only wish for. Then, become a person of excellence in the work place. Pretend the business is your business and act like an entrepreneur. Go the extra mile, put more effort in, treat everything and everyone around you as if were your own company. Review the company objectives and goals. Have you spotted a solution to a problem that no-one else has? Roll it out and put it into practice.

I dare you – see the difference living like this makes to your work life.

2) Next, review your use of time at home. It’s said that winners and losers are distinguished by their use of time. So what do you do with yours? Check out the following: which category do you belong in?:

Winners

  • Use Time
  • Value Time
  • Spend Time
  • Make Time
  • Read Books
  • Keep Learning

Losers

  • Kill time
  • Lose Time
  • Squander Time
  • Can’t Find Time
  • Watch TV
  • Think They Know Enough Already

Hummm. Enough said!

3) Entrepreneurs need to learn how to focus in on the one thing they enjoy and do really well. If you want to become an entrepreneur, use the ability you have now and research a way to use it to help other people. As an example, one of the names on the Skillionaire’s list is a man who emigrated from India. He began his career as a cleaner in an Indian Restaurant and gradually worked his way up through the ranks until he owned a string of restaurants himself.

The one thing the Skillionaire’s list proves is that you don’t need a degree to succeed in life, so if you don’t have one, you can celebrate along with the rest of us! Just make sure you have the necessary equipment in your entrepreneur toolbox to create some changes in your life. If you don’t think your toolbox is fully equipped, get some help – everyone needs training at some point in their life. I hope ‘entrepreneur – what the Skillionaire’s List can teach you’ has been helpful.

What is APA Format and Why is it Important?

Many book and scholarly journal editors as well as grant reviewers and others require that manuscripts they consider for publication be prepared in APA (American Psychological Association) format. This is true in many disciplines, by no means limited to psychology or even the broader social sciences. What is APA format? Why is it used in areas outside of psychology? And what do writers need to do in order to get their manuscripts into this format?

APA format is a standard set of conventions for formatting manuscripts. It contains detailed instructions for in-text citation references, references lists, pagination, margins, hierarchy of subheadings, running heads, etc. It has been adapted across a large number of disciplines (notably not including medical texts and journals, which have their own set of standardized conventions) for two reasons. First, there is a recognized need for standardization of these formatting parameters in order to make it easier for readers to be able to understand scholarly texts with the greatest possible ease and efficiency. Second, given this need, APA has developed an extremely thorough and comprehensive manual to accomplish this, and editors in other disciplines don’t need to waste time reinventing the wheel by developing alternative parallel formats. In addition, APA is conscientious about periodically updating their format manual, for example to incorporate references to material found on the world wide web, which did not exist when the first version of the manual was published.

The APA format manual is lengthy and complex but well-indexed and very explicit. It can be purchased online from a variety of sources and is available at most university bookstores. Brief guides may also be purchased and found online through your favorite search engine using keywords ‘APA formatting’.

Investing in your future by hiring an editor who is an expert in APA formatting as well as in the correct use of the English language can turn an average thesis into an excellent thesis. It pays to ensure that what many people consider to be one of the most important writings of their lives is of the highest quality possible.

Considering a Property For Sale in the Coromandel?

If you want to live in an area of New Zealand known not only for its beaches, native bush and outdoor beauty, but also for its people and sense of community then looking for property for sale in the Coromandel is an excellent place to begin.

This area of the North Island is well known as a strong creative hub with many artists, sculptors and potters taking up residence, inspired by the natural abundance of inspiration all around them. Barry Brickell, a well known potter loves the area so much he’s built a railway through the native bush! He’s just one of the many well respected creatives in the area.

It’s also a place of history. In this part of the North Island you’ll find the earliest evidence of the first settlements in New Zealand. Captain Cook and his voyage are responsible for some of the place names found in the Coromandel. The first of the European visitors were also responsible for mining the gold, and removing a lot of the beautiful Kauri and other native timbers, and taking the gum, the remainder of which is now protected for future generations.

The area is now best known for its farming, horticulture, tourism, creative and fishing industries. Many people who are passionate about the environment have moved into the area, which is considered one of the “greenie” capitals of New Zealand. In addition to these permanent residents are a large number of holiday home owners who love the peace and quiet offered, which offers a huge change from their often frantic and noisy urban lives. Aucklander’s in particular enjoy holidaying in this district as it is a relatively short distance from the city, but at the same time is far removed from city life.

If you are looking for property for sale in the Coromandel, there are many towns of differing size to explore as possibilities. Each town or small settlement is connected together by good roads. Selecting the right place for you will depend on whether you need a larger town with schools and businesses close by and no commute, or a small settlement with school bus services and a daily commute to work. If you are seeking a holiday home, of course these factors are not as essential (though a shop nearby for bread, milk and papers will be!)

Selecting the right property for sale in the Coromandel is all about working out what area of the community fits your lifestyle best. Do you have a creative passion and like to be near town centres to explore local exhibitions and galleries? Or, is a doorway to the great outdoors, beaches, peace and quiet more to your liking? No matter your property and lifestyle preference, the Coromandel has something unique and special just for you.

Growing Roses in a Dry Mediterranean Climate – Is it Compatible With Water Conserving Gardening?

Roses, for the most part are very demanding in their water needs. With the exception of a number of species roses of Mediterranean and steppe-climate origin (i.e. Central Asia), the cultivated varieties known to the gardener consume, to perform at their best, 3-4 times more than drought resistant landscaping shrubs.

For instance, famous hybrid tea roses like Chrysler Imperial, Queen Elizabeth, or Peace, will require some 700mm (30in) of additional irrigation per year, in a dry Mediterranean climate that receives 250-450mm of winter rainfall. Compared to that, shrubs and bushes such as Viburnum, Pistachio, Melaleuca, or Grevillea can get by perfectly well on 100-200mm a year, and even less. The question is, how can roses be grown within the water limitations of a dry climate?

Before answering, let us remind ourselves just how uniquely special a great rose bush can be. What compares to a mass of fiery red floribundas by a whitewashed wall? Or the beauty and fragrance of so many of the fabulous Hybrid teas? There is a place for roses in most Mediterranean style gardens, if a way can be found to keep the water use down.

Defined Rose Beds

The first step, obviously, is to restrict the area that rose bushes cover, and to concentrate them in just one small part of the garden. Admittedly, this small part will need a lot of water, but you can offset their high consumption by planting drought resistant shrubs in the rest of the garden.

As well as some of the species just mentioned, you can add to the list plants like Junipers, Leocophyllum, Pittosporum, and Carissa, to name but a few. By happy coincidence, focusing the roses in one spot makes good design sense.

Irrigation – A Separate Line for the Rose Bed

Efficient water use demands that the roses need an irrigation regime separate from the other landscape bushes in the garden. It is not possible to save water if the water conserving plants are on the same line as the thirsty plants like roses.

Neither is it always wise to have the roses on the same line as other groups of high consumers such as topical plants nor annual flowers, because although the quantities required may be similar, the desired frequency between watering is often quite different. Despite being water guzzlers, roses are also sensitive to a lack of air in the root zone, so the high frequency regime appropriate for flowers could be very unsuitable for roses. Where possible then, give the roses their own, separate irrigation schedule.

Avoid Under Planting

Roses tend to struggle when they have to compete for water and nutrients with neighboring plants. Included in this category are prostrate plants grown to improve the visual effect of the ground plane. Under planting the roses inevitably leads to a need for adding more water, in order to compensate for the uptake by the low growing plants.

Instead of under planting then, it is far better from a water saving point of view, to spread a layer of organic mulch between the rose bushes. Aesthetically speaking, you can turn it to your advantage by using decorative wood chippings as a mulching medium. In addition, the roses will benefit from the cooler temperature of the topsoil and from less competition from weeds.

Best Growing Tomatoes – Do Determinate and Indeterminate Tomatoes Differ and Which Tastes Better?

If you are trying to produce the tastiest and best growing tomatoes possible, you may have wondered what the difference is between a determinate and indeterminate tomato. Not only does each have distinctive qualities, but, many gardeners agree that there is a definite taste difference between the two.

It is helpful to know how determinant and indeterminate tomatoes differ. The distinctions below can assist in helping you produce the best growing tomatoes you can and enjoy the bounty each plant brings.

Characteristics of the indeterminate tomato plants:

1) have the ability to grow 6 – 10 feet tall

2) are generally sturdier and produce more tomatoes than the determinants

3) fruit is set on nearly every node and continues producing until frost

4) needs room to spread out and will require firm stakes

Characteristics of the determinant tomato plants:

1) also known as “bush tomatoes,” these grow up to 6 feet tall before extending to the side instead of upward

2) tomatoes mature faster – average of 60 days

3) tomatoes generally ripen all at once, and are therefore good for canning, freezing, or drying

4) pruning or staking is not needed

5) fruit is set on only a single node

Because they are less costly and easier to grow on a commercial scale, at least 80% of store bought tomatoes are from determinate plants. It is believed that determinants have less flavor due to all the fruit developing at once, and therefore less sugar and nutrients are available for each fruit.

Some examples of indeterminate tomatoes are:

1) heirloom

2) Big Beef (most of the beefsteak types)

3) Supersonic

4) Early Girl

5) Big Boy

Some examples of determinant tomatoes are:

1) Pik-Red

2) Peacevine

3) Super Bush

4) Celebrity

5) Roma

6) Sprite

Because each variety has its’ own pros and cons, you have to look at you own unique situation to decide which tomato plant is the best for your circumstances. If you have limited space, the determinant may be a better option as these varieties can easily be grown on a patio.

All You Need to Know About HVAC System

Have you ever wondered how you would feel if after coming back home from a day’s work you find that the environment and temperature of your house does not soothe your tiredness, but rather aggravates it? Yes, this is exactly where the HVAC system can render its valuable service. This system must comprise an essential part of the infrastructure of your home and workplace, as it is a determining factor to increase the livability of your house. Having a HVAC unit suggests that the temperature of your home can be kept within your comfort level without burning a hole in your pocket, whereas having no HVAC system means that the comfort level of your house will be low and you would jump in shock at the end of the month to see the hefty sum you must pay as the electric bill.

The acronym HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning; it implies that this single unit is capable of providing you all the three services. It is generally installed by the HVAC professionals. The orientation of the idea of HVAC went hand in hand with the Industrial Revolution and its concept is based on the inventions made by Micheal Faraday, Willis Carrier, Reuben Trane, William Rankine and many others. The three major functions of heating, ventilating and air conditioning are closely linked with each other and act as a composite when it comes to keep the temperature and moisture of a place under control and to keep the cost of installation, operation and maintenance within budget.

Components of HVAC system:

Although the components of the HVAC unit can vary depending on the need they are to serve, but there are some basic components that remain constant.

1. The furnace: The furnace helps to generate heat in order to provide warmth to your home during the winter. It can be run on natural gas, oil, propane or electricity depending on your house set-up and the nature of the furnace.

2. The air conditioning unit: This particular unit keeps your house cool during summer. It is placed outside your house but delivers cool air with the aid of a motor that enters your home through ducts and spreads all over the place.

3. Ducts: They are the tubes which helps cool air to spread all over the house.

4. Vents: Vents permit the air to blow out into the house and also provides the return of the air which has turned too hot or cold. They should be placed intelligently for facilitating the return of air at the proper places and also should have the option to close it when a certain room does not require conditioning.

Benefits of HVAC system:

1. Energy efficient: It is a single unit that provides you with both heat and cool air according to the demand of the weather, so it is cost-effective as well. It is also eco-friendly, as this unit can be run on solar or wind energy.

2. Purifies air: This system helps to purify air by stripping the air of all the germs and harmful particles, so that you can breathe a pollution free air. So it provides a healthy home environment for you.

3. Keeps a check on moisture: People living in the areas where climate remains the same or changes very rapidly, controlling moisture poses a big problem. Since the air of such regions are damp, so mildew forms under floors and inside walls. This can be prevented by sending cool and dry air inside the house with the help of HVAC unit.

On the final note it can be added that HVAC has the power to award you with an enhanced comfort level by providing you with a favorable atmosphere, whether at your home or work place. It should be installed by the professionals and must be inspected regularly. In that way you can be assured to get a long-lasting service from your HVAC system.

Native American Blueberries, Rubel, Sunshine Blue, Jersey and Ozarkblue

Introduction

Many botanists believe blueberry predecessor plants could be the most ancient fruit plants on earth. Put some in your cereal bowl for a 13,000 years old healthy treat. The extended blueberry family includes countless permutations throughout the world. From land cover varieties that grow close to the ground to vigorously growing upright plants. Every growing zone and climate has its own native species. The bilberries, whortleberries and hurtleberries are a vast global family although the true blueberry is actually native only to the Americas. Many modern varieties have been hybridized from the wild American varieties and have become a popular healthy fruit. The United States in 2006 accounted for 90 percent of the world’s commercial crop. They are now being grown and marketed all over the world.

The Native American Indian held blueberries in high regard. They harvested them and considered them a gift from God to be preserved and used throughout the year. Native American Indians enjoyed this fruit fresh, dried, smoked, and pounded into venison to make an early version of blueberry flavored jerky called sautauthig. They also made tea from the blueberry leaves used it as what they thought was a purifier of blood.

Varieties of blueberries in general

There are three basic types of true blueberry plants grown in America highbush, lowbush, and rabbiteye. Highbush as the name implies grow tall and erect, lowbush are ground hugging crawlers, and rabbiteyes are also erect bushes.

One of the main factors as defined by its seasonal home is the plants seasonal requirement cool dormancy time between 32 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Their growing zones in an over simplistic way can be divided as follows:

The lowbush are adapted from Canada through Maine.

The highbush types from new England down to the Carolinas and

The rabbiteyes from the Carolinas down through Florida.

Pollination requirements

High bush are self pollinating and require no other plant for cross-fertilization. Although they produce better when cross-pollinated. Rabbiteye and lowbush both are not self pollinating and require cross-pollination to set fruit.

A new hybrid which is a cross between the highbush and the rabbiteye has been developed called the southern highbush. It differs from the northern highbush in requiring much lees chilling time. It generally needs cross-pollination.

Specific varieties to consider growing

Rubel.

I will now recommend to you an heirloom variety of northern variety discovered in 1911 called the Rubel. It is self fruiting and adaptable to growing in zones 4 through 7. It has one of the highest antioxidant levels of any blueberry. Because of its flavor and suitability to be used in pastries it is still a very popular variety. It has been used as a parent of some of the popular commercial varieties that have been developed. Rubel is truthfully the reigning “emperor” of health foods, Rubel is an outstanding consistent producer. HARDINESS ZONE – 4 to 7

Jersey – This is a northern high-bush plant with a mid-season ripening time. This plant is self-pollinating, The berries are small, but known for having the best flavor of all. These berries have a long shelf life. Jersey is the most popular variety in Michigan and other northern states. HARDINESS ZONE – 4 to 8

Sunshine blue

Sunshine blue leads the list of southern varieties with outstanding attributes. It is a semi-dwarf plant that grows 3 o 4 feet tall. It is semi evergreen with extremely vivacious hot pink flowers and can produce up to 10 pounds of blueberries each season. It is a perfect plant to grow in a container on the patio or in the landscape. It has a low chilling requirement of only 300 hours and is more tolerant of elevated pH than most varieties. It grows in zones 5 to 10.

Ozarkblue – This is a Central-southern High bush type with Late Mid Season ripening time, Chilling requirements will be approximately 400 hours. Yields are consistently high at 15 pounds per plant, Quality of fruit is excellent and the Shelf life of the fruits is superior; Flavor is sweet to sub acid, which means high flavor. The cultivar escapes late freeze damage unlike other low chill high-bush cultivars. Only partially self-fertile, for highest yields rows should be alternated with another variety HARDINESS ZONE 5 to 9.

Purchase your plants from a reputable nursery

Choose blueberries that were grown without pesticides to avoid the possibility of getting blueberries that may contain pesticides and ingesting pesticides. You can grow your own in your yard or in containers on your patio to insure your blueberries are pesticide free. You can freeze blueberries you grow and have them for year around use. In addition growing your own can be enjoyable as well as rewarding. You can purchase your plants free of pesticides from a reputable nursery.

Rainforest Plants – Castor Bean

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Genus: Ricinus

Species: communis

Common names: castor bean, palm of Christ, mole bush

General Description: The bean is native to the tropics of Africa and Asia, but is cultivated as a garden and landscape plant throughout the world. This shrub (or small tree) is large and evergreen, growing in zones 10 and 11. In cooler regions, Castor bean is grown as an annual. It is considered an ornamental, and may be planted indoors as well as out. It is herbaceous, but when it matures, it becomes woody.

Uses: The bean is a member of the Euphorbia (Spurge) family. Like most Euphorbias, the sap is highly caustic and is considered a poison. The pollen is an allergenic. However, appropriately processed there are a number of valuable uses for this plant. Castor oil is derived from this beans; it is used extensively in medicine, and in various applications in the industrial world (varnishes, paints, polyurethane coatings, plastics, transport, cosmetics, textiles, leathers, lubricants and lamp oil) as well as numerous other industrial and manufacturing processes. Castor Oil Pomace is a substance that results from crushing the bean; the Pomace is used as a high-nitrogen fertilizer. In medicine, Castor Oil is a cathartic and been used for many years to induce labor.

The leaves of the Castor bean are big and star-shaped-a very attractive plant. It has been referred to as the ‘mole bush’ because of its natural ability to repel moles. Castor bean is grown widely in the southern United States, where it was introduced and naturalized several decades ago. Florida’s Nursery Grower’s Association Board of Directors voted to no longer propagate, sell or use Castor bean in Florida. This is one of 34 species upon which such action was taken in 2001. Because Castor bean flowers throughout the year, it is difficult to control and has become invasive in fields and along roadsides in disturbed areas below 1000 feet.

FHA Reform May Change It’s True Purpose

Expanding American Homeownership Act of 2007 has been passed by the House and will most likely be passed by the Senate and signed by the President after a few minor adjustments. This is the biggest change to FHA that has occurred since it inception. If the House has it’s way, this would actually change the initial purpose of FHA from being an agency formed to help low income households to an agency that helps almost all Americans to be able to own and keep their homes.

Increasing FHA Loan Limits

Why am I saying this? FHA has always been geared toward helping low income, poor areas, to be able to afford buying houses. The new bill that is now before the senate proposes to increase the loan limits from $200,000-$350,000 to as high as $700,000 in areas with high median house prices. I personally don’t know any low income people that own $700k houses, except for those individuals that lied on their loan applications and “stated” that they made $10,000 per month as a janitor at Wal Mart and actually got the loan. Fortunately, Bush has stated that he will not allow this to happen. He intends to keep FHA’s purpose intact. I believe the Senate will do the same. Bush plans on keeping the FHA loan limit at $417,000 or below. We should see very soon.

Elimination of Audited Financials Requirement for Brokers

This is the second largest change to FHA. If this is passed by the House, it would open the door to about 90% of the nations mortgage brokers that were previously restricted from becoming an FHA Approved Broker (Loan Correspondent) due to the cost barrier. Most people don’t realize it, but audited financials can cost between $2,000 to $20,000 for the average small broker to obtain. The audited financials required by FHA must be completed by a CPA that has gone through a peer review and the minimum net worth must be $50,000 according to FHA’s stringent net worth calculation guidelines. Now, the 90% of brokers that did not have the time, money, and resources to put together audited financials, can put forth a surety bond in lieu of the audited financials. A surety bond is obtained through insurance companies and covers the consumer or third parties in a transaction and is payable by the mortgage company if drawn on by the state to pay a consumer or third party. The new bill proposes a bond between $50,000 and $100,000. Most analysts would agree that something similar to this will be in the amended bill when passed by the Senate.

What will be the affect of this Bill

Whether the FHA loan limit is increased to $700,000 in some areas or $417,000, the bill will change FHA’s purpose dramatically. Many people will be looking to FHA as a place to obtain a loan that conventional lenders are not able to provide. This is possible through FHA’s upfront mortgage insurance that is able to reduce the risk of higher debt-to-income and loan-to-value ratios. We will also see a huge surge of advertising for FHA when the majority of mortgage brokers are given access to be approved FHA brokers. Unfortunately, the House tends to think that this will be the solution to the current market problems. This is a great start, but I think it will take much more than this to bring an adjustment to all of the lies and deception that occurred in the last 5 years in the mortgage industry.
