ACLS and the Super Bowl

Only moments into the second quarter and already the first knee injury cast a dark pallor over the team roster during the Super Bowl. Commentators frequently tossed the acronym “torn ACL” about as they discussed the injured player’s status while spectators watched as he was nearly carried off the field and out of the game.

So what is with the constant barrage of acronyms used in the medical profession (and what do they all mean), you may ask? These are letters symbolizing lengthy medical terms frequently Latin in origin and most certainly difficult to pronounce. For example, ACL is ‘short’ for anterior cruciate ligament, aka the outside connective tissue of the knee. A torn ACL is very painful and, as those of us watching the game witnessed, will pull even the strongest out of the biggest national football game of the year.

Yet, the title of this article contains an additional letter within its acronym leading one to believe that ACL (the outside ligament of the knee) is different than ACLS in the title. That assumption is correct! ACLS is another acronym utilized by medical professionals to identify an advanced training and skill set for providing life support to victims of sudden cardiac injury or death. To be ACLS certified means that medical professional has been trained and possesses the lifesaving skills necessary to intervene on an advanced level. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is not the standard Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) program taught to the general public. Medical professionals are trained in ACLS protocols for pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergencies. These skills save lives and are mandatory to provide this type of advanced care. It is with confidence, that as the patient, you can rest assured you will be in good hands should the unexpected emergency arise.

So let’s say “goodbye” to this football season and wish those players who suffered a torn ACL a very speedy, successful recovery. As the leaves change color and a new season of games are played out, another host of football fanatics will be glued to the their TV sets as next season’s Super Bowl gathers fans to witness the ravages of the game. Smile a little on the inside knowing, as you hear ‘torn ACL’ announced over the TV, that the stadium medics will be treating an injured knee and not delivering advanced BLS or CPR aka advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

New Book Reveals Untold Story of First Rose Bowl at 100-Year Anniversary

Chance for Glory is the kind of book from which great sports movies are made. It has everything in it that a true sports fan or just the lover of a good story desires, from a compelling plot to interesting characters, a blend of history, a lot of action, and a fair dose of humor. And it’s being released just in time to celebrate the one-hundred-year anniversary of the first Rose Bowl game played by Washington State College against Brown University in 1916.

Since author Darin Watkins is an alumnus of what is now Washington State University, his focus, of course, is on the Washington team, and he begins the story by depicting for us a young school struggling to survive against its larger rival, the University of Washington, which wanted to limit what its sister school could teach.

The opening chapter depicts a fascinating early football game from 1912 played at West Point-a game that would have among its players the Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe and future general and U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower. One of the coaches at that game was “Pop” Warner, the man who was coach to William Dietz and recommended him as coach to Washington State College when it badly needed a good coach.

Washington State had a long history of losing its football games, but Coach Dietz quickly turned that around. I’ll let readers explore his methods for themselves, but I will say he was very innovative. All the more remarkable was that he was Native American at a time when racism was predominant. In 1915, when he became coach of the Washington State Cougars, it was only twenty-five years since the massacre at Wounded Knee. But it wasn’t long before Dietz won over his players’ trust and he had them believing they could succeed not only as a team but as a powerful rival to other teams throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The events that follow are like a running film montage of one successive win after another, and yet, Watkins takes the time to describe each game and each major play, and he brings these historical people to life, investing feelings and emotions into them, making this book read like good historical fiction, yet be full of facts. Each of the players becomes an individual to us, and we get to know them both on and off the football field, including, in some cases, which ladies they dated. The amount of research Watkins did to pull together all these pieces and get insight into his characters is amazing, and he documents it all, yet the book reads smoothly like a novel more than a history.

As the Cougars stack up win after win, they begin to gain national attention, and before long, they are invited to participate in the first Rose Bowl Tournament. Of course, the Rose Bowl is a big deal today, but in 1915, no one was sure it would even succeed. Watkins depicts the struggles of the committee to get attention and sell tickets, the first Tournament of Roses parade, the publicity, and the overall results that transformed the tournament into an American institution.

One fascinating aspect of the Rose Bowl was that the Cougars, since they were going to Pasadena anyway, were invited to be in a Hollywood film-Tom Brown Goes to Harvard-part of a popular silent film series of the day, which included a football game. Watkins’ presentation of this glimpse at early movie-making is fascinating and humorous.

And then it’s on to the Rose Bowl. Watkins fills us in on every play, every cheer, every worry, and eventually, the great triumph. Through the written word, Watkins provides a very visual story of an event that would make history.

Few American stories of overcoming adversity are as thrilling and enjoyable to read as Chance for Glory. Watkins’ ability to bring history alive places this book beside other great history storytelling examples like Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City about the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, and its triumphant message is worthy of a feel-good Disney film.

How wonderful that Watkins has timed this book to appear at the hundredth anniversary of the Rose Bowl. The Washington State Cougars’ efforts give new life and meaning to the game of football by reminding us that anyone with some courage and a dream can succeed, whether at sports or anything else.

Who Spiked the Costa Rica Property Punch Bowl?

After 2005, the property market here in Costa Rica went in to stagnation. Unable to handle the serious decline in interest in real estate, many agencies closed their doors.

During the peak of the world recession, realtors really began to struggle with how to counter the current economic climate. Sure foreclosure properties were common place but without buyers it’s inconsequential. A few savvy investors did seize the opportunity but over the whole, the average home investor looking for either a vacation or retirement home, were nowhere to be found.

Essentially the Costa Rica property market was as quiet as a morgue and like any recession, this gave opportunity to a select few.

We are now seeing much more co-operation amongst realtors and even the formation of a Costa Rica MLS. Realtors quickly realized that they are stronger in formation and alliance with one another rather than a non-cooperative competitive environment that has dominated here for so many years. Sometimes change is better.

Then the crazy uncle walked in the party and spiked the punch…

These days we are witnessing a shift in attitude towards investing in Costa Rica property and other Latin American countries. It would be difficult to not surf around the WWW and not come across some form of advertising for real estate in the big three… Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.

A keen investor mind will tell you that there is great potential in investing in tropical countries especially a country as democratically stable, eco-friendly and all around relaxed as Costa Rica. Investment in real estate is a relatively simple process and in most regards, easier than purchasing property in Canada or the US.

Average beach properties being sold are between $300-$400,000 USD while inland properties being sold are still relatively low at $50-$150,000 USD.

With plenty of media coverage, Costa Rica is more and more popular every day. The tourism industry in 2009, allocated millions to target the US market. Dubbed “CR Plus”, this marketing campaign was designed to appeal to the frugal traveller looking for an escape vacation but at the same time not losing their shirt.

This campaign continues today as the tourism board realizes that in order to improve tourism numbers, they need to place the country in front of the people that matter most. Ideally the correct target market.

Heading in to the future, it would appear the market is on the rise yet again. We don’t believe we will see the same conditions of the early 2000 market any time soon but at the very least, we are on the rebound.

Wood Turning Tools – Turning A Fruit Bowl

Article 2 discussed the wood turning project, securing your fruit bowl to the lathe, safety, proper tool use and where to locate information for tool use and different techniques. The side walls of the bowl and bottom are at the thickness that you want and you have made some allowance in the thickness for sanding the bowl. With all that work completed lets finish the bowl.

Sanding, start with 60 grit sand paper and finish at 250 grit; these are approximate; different types of wood, type of finish you going to use and your experience all effect the finishing process. Sand until all tool marks are gone. The 60 to 250 grit is what I generally use; some times I will go to 320 for final sanding. All this depends on the type of wood and the finish you are going to use.

You can hand sand the bowl. The downfall to sanding by hand; is the sanding is slow and tedious and it is very hard to sand out the concentric rings that will appear in the bottom of the bowl. The main cause for this is sanding speed. I use power tools to do the sanding, a 45º variable speed angle drill with an RPM of at least 2500. You can also use a pneumatic sander; the high speed will give a very smooth finish. The 3″ sanding disks seem to be generally the best size. Go slow until you get the feel of the sanding the heavy grit tends to be grabby when it is new; a few bruised knuckles, you’ll understand.

To finish the bottom of the bowl; knock off the waste block, use a wood chisel and carefully drive it between the bowl and waste block in several places, careful not to gouge the bowl. Bottom can be sanded flat with a belt sander or there are a number of large chucks that can hold the bowl so you can finish the bottom. This is referred to as reverse turning because you are turning the bowl over and finishing the bottom.

It is time to put a finishing compound on your bowl. You can finish it naturally or stain the wood this is entirely up to you. Just be sure and read the directions on each product make sure they are compatible. One of simplest and easiest finishes to use is a hand rubbed oil, the only draw back is this type of finish will showcase any blemishes or scratches left from sanding. You can mix your own finish; there are many recipes online or in the wood magazines. They all contain a solvent of some type, paint thinner to alcohol the reason I mention this is because the different solvents evaporate at different speeds, in cool weather you want to use a faster solvent and hot weather a slower solvent. One of my favorite finishes is made by Dailys called Profin, gloss. The gloss can be buffed to a satin or semi gloss and won’t darken the wood.

You now have a Fruit Bowl for your table that you can be proud of. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different species of wood, woodturning is fun.

You have turned your fruit bowl with woodturning tools. To finish you will need sandpaper and a finishing compound.

Bowling Games – From Six Pin Bowling to Crazy Bowl

You can find bowling alleys virtually everywhere in the US. But some people prefer to play other variations of the traditional ten pin bowling game. For example: using six pins there are simpler versions of bowling perfect for kids, as well as the 3-6-9 variation of the game of the ten point set up. When I was younger, especially in girl scouts, we used to do what is sometimes called “crazy bowl” – making up our own rules as we went along.

You can get kids’ six pin (or ten pin) games at many major toy stores. The six pin method is definitely suited especially for kids. Six pin bowling is usually designed to set up at home. There really are no strict rules, just the basics. In addition, there are no official tournaments, or even venues that provide this type of bowling for children’s entertainment. Often these toys can be great preparation for a child who might become very involved in competitive bowling later in life. Or you can purchase a bowling game for the purpose of just having some fun that your kids can enjoy – and no other, major goal.

The “crazy bowl” game I used to play in Girl Scouts is one of the goofiest kid’s games ever. If you decide to rent a lane or lanes to play this with a group of children – I seriously recommend that you get the gutter bumpers that are almost always available. If you have children or if you have ever worked with children, then you already know that goofy is good.

There are rules for crazy bowl – but you can make up whatever rules you want. Of course the rules should be made considering the safety of the kids, those bowling balls are heavy, right? And heavy can be dangerous, as you probably already know. For example: my Girl Scout troop went on little field trips to the bowling alley with double bumpers. We sat with our legs in a V position – almost on the lane and pushed the ball as hard as we could to see how many pins we could knock over (or how far the ball would roll. We rolled the balls backwards between our legs, swinging our bodies and the ball in both hands and rolling it behind us down the lane.

Back when I played crazy bowl we also enjoyed the carefree task of pushing the ball in teams of two, sitting on our knees on the lane. There were usually two girls pushing with both hands. One last example is the only one in which we were actually using the finger and thumb holes in the ball, but there was a catch – we had to do it blindfolded and a non-blindfolded partner would point the girl who was bowling in the right direction so that no one would get hurt accidentally.

When you are trying to find fun ways to entertain your family, consider bowling. There are many ways to make bowling a wonderful family hobby. Your kids may want to join a league, it can become a regular family activity, or you can just play around with bowling toys at home. Whether you do it for fun, profession, competition or for a simple family focus, bowling is a great sport that has lasted thousands upon thousands of years.

Bowling Tips – How to Bowl a Hook

Let’s Learn How To Bowl a Strike

If you’ve been thinking about learning how to bowl then you are going to want to stop what you’re doing and read this article.

In the next few minutes, we’re going to look at three crucial elements that you must consider before you start to bowl. First we’re going to talk about gripping the ball. Next we’re going to discuss factors on how to release the ball. Finally, we’re going to finish up by talking about putting a hook on the ball.

Releasing the ball is a crucial element in order to bowl a strike. The fact is, if you’re not in a good stance you will suck in bowling, but if you are in the correct stance you could be great. With that said, your stance will have to be aimed at the king pin. If you’re right handed step forward with right foot, if you’re left handed lead with left foot. Make sure your arms and shoulders are relaxed. Some people take four steps while doing a fluid backswing and forward release of the ball. Some take five steps, its up to you and your comfort zone. Power release is one way of delivering the ball. The most common delivering is the straight ball release when your palm is aimed toward the pin.

Learning how to grip the ball is an important factor. You must learn how to grip the bowling ball in a way that’s comfortable and effective for you. There are many gripping techniques out there, you will have to learn which one is for you. A lot depends on how strong your fingers and wrist are, so take that into consideration. Allowing your fingertips to grip the ball will result in a much smoother roll and better control when executing a hook shot. So, I suggest you learn this technique it will help you out in a tremendous way.

Most people have trouble with hooking the ball to get a strike, but if you could master it you could become a better bowler. Its about twisting your wrist at the right moment and releasing the ball at the same time. There are different styles of hooking the ball so once you fine your style you will become a better bowler especially in hooking the ball. It also demands a strong wrist. If your wrist are weak you will have a hard time throwing a good hook.

Super Bowl Charters

When you think of airline travel you have two choices. You can either fly commercial or you can charter a plane to get you where you want to be. Both get you to your destination, but have wildly different takes on airline travel. If you are going on a business trip, chartering a jet can allow you to conduct meetings and work en route. But what about for a family vacation or a weekend away? Yes, you can charter to that, and what if you charter to football’s biggest game, the Super Bowl? If you don’t live near the stadium where the game is to be played, why not?

The Super Bowl is an annual event, played on the first Sunday in February and features the winners of the AFC against the winners of the NFC. Back in the day, the AFC and the NFL were rival leagues but they merged in 1970 to form what we know today as the NFL. While the merger was taking shape, they agreed that the winners of both leagues would play a championship game and the Super Bowl was born. The first edition of the ‘big game’ was played in 1967. To be fancy and to stand out, each game after was known by the Roman Numeral for its number, all except Super Bowl 50 which used the numeric in their logo. Another interesting fact about football’s biggest game is that in odd numbered games the winners of the NFC are granted the home team, while in even numbered games that nod goes to the winners of the AFC.

It is also a neat fact that no team has ever played a Super Bowl in their home stadium. In fact, there are four teams that have never played in that game at all. Detroit, Cleveland, Jacksonville and the Houston Texans have never got to that all exciting final game of the season. Teams that have seen success though include Pittsburgh with 6 wins and both Dallas and San Francisco who have 4 wins each.

So, if you don’t live in the designated Super Bowl city, charter your way there. You’ll be happy you did, as you can design a schedule, you will have plenty of leg, shoulder, head and elbow room and you can configure the cabin any way your heart desires. Throw in the lack of long security lines and we have a winner!

Segmented Bowl

People who love to craft designs from wood have made amazing art using this particular woodworking method. Some of patterns are quite spectacular and your project can be, too! Among the many masterpieces that I’ve seen online, my all-time favorite is a segmented bowl. The one that I saw was really beautiful and way the pattern spiraled into the bottom of the bowl gave it great depth. One day soon, I plan on making one for my own home.

You can start by deciding on the general shape and size of your project and the appearance of your final work. You also need to consider the color and design pattern you want. Consider the species of wood to use to contrast the different colors and final appearance.

The best way and most cost efficient way to make one of these bowl is to create a block of wood gluing strips of wood together of different thickness and colors. If you repeat the design on each side of the center you will have spiral design on each side to the bowl. The block should be between 2.5 inches and 3 inches thick when finished. You will then cut boards from the block you just glued up, you need four boards, and thickness is variable. You will need to need to cut rings from these boards. Use a compass to draw the rings so that they should nest inside one another. The rings can be cut out with a scroll saw or a band saw; if you use a band saw do not glue the center of the block; you can tape the boards together to draw the rings. The rings can be glued together later.

From large to small, each ring is slightly larger than the previous ring. It is critical that the surface of the rings be smooth and well sanded, any blemish will be highly visible in your finished work. The rings overlap each other by a half inch to three quarter inches, when gluing these rings together it is important that the rings be centered within each other and the stack as vertical as possible. The side walls of the finished bowl will be thin 1/4 to 3/8 inches, if there is excessive wobble or the stack is not vertical you will cut through one side and a lot of work will be wasted.

The stack of rings will not be perfect, but should be glued together as carefully as possible. Rotating the rings as you glue them together will create the spiral design.
