History of the Computer – Memory Error Correction Codes Part 1 of 2

We have mentioned before, in the history of the computer series, that various forms of error correction are used, in cases where the medium is unreliable. This applies mainly to magnetic tape and disks. The magnetic coating on the recording surfaces is subject to wear, various codes such as CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) have been developed. Data transmission now also uses error correction, previously error detection would cause a re-transmission.

The need for error correction in memories became more pressing when semiconductor, or chip memories were introduced in the 1970s. Although they promised much larger capacity in much less space, for a better cost, the early chips were susceptible to failures.

The early introduction of these memory types in mainframes saw the re-introduction of the Hamming code. Richard Hamming, a mathematician who had worked on the Manhattan Project in WWII, worked on early computers, and devised the code in 1950.

The code was used in chip memories to improve the performance of the computers so that they could be used without too many failures! It was able to correct a single bit error (SBE). Thus, if one of the bits in a word read out of memory was a 1 instead of a 0, it could be changed back to a 0, on the fly. This operation was transparent to the user. It could also detect, but not correct Multiple Bit Errors (MBE), also known as MUE (Multiple Uncorrectable Errors).

Multiple bit errors caused a recovery process to be initiated, causing lost time, a situation frowned upon in computer circles! It was therefore important for the engineers to keep a watchful eye on the error logs.

A repeat occurrence of a particular bit in error indicated a potential failure of multiple bits, as another bit failure at the same address, at the same time would cause problems. For this reason a chip showing a single bit error would be replaced at the next maintenance session.

How does the Hamming code work? It can be seen as an extension of a simple parity code, which we have mentioned before. Odd parity counts the number of 1 bits in a character, or word, and sets to 1 or 0 to make the total count odd. For example 1011010 has an even number of bits, so a parity bit of 1 would be added to the data written to memory – 11011010. Now we can check the data read out of memory to see if the total number of bits is odd or even. If it is even there is an error.

P101 1010 = even # of bits

1101 1010 = odd # of bits with a parity bit.

We now go to the next step, and devise a code which will identify the location of a failing bit. The way we do this is to consider a series of sets of bits so that the checks overlap. We choose these sets in accordance with the binary bit values, or powers, 1,2,4,8 etc. taking as many bits as we need to cover the word length. These check bits are inserted in the word written to memory in the appropriate bit positions.

D7-D6-D5 C8-D4-D3-D2 C4-D1-C2-C1

D1 to D7 are the original data bits in sequence

C1 to C4 are the check bits in the decimal value positions.

In Part 2 we will use an example of a bit failure to illustrate the operation.

SSL Certificate: The Protocol for Web Site Security

The SSL certificate is a cryptographic protocol which provides communication security over the internet. When a sender sends information over the internet, SSL helps to protect such information with robust encryption. Therefore, outsiders or hackers cannot intercept the information and user’s data remains safe and secure over the internet. Many certificate authorities issue the SSL certificate that is equipped with up to 256-bit encryption and 2048-bit RSA key. Since the SSL came into existence, the size of the encryption is increasing periodically like 40-bit, 56-bit, 128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit encryption. The CAB forum (certificate authority bureau) changes the algorithm of SSL standards occasionally.

What happens when a Web browser connects to an SSL-secure Web site?

· The first step is that the browser attempts to connect to the website.

· The browser demands the Web server to confirm whether the website is equipped with SSL security or not.

· The server of the site transmits a copy of the SSL certificate for the visitor’s web browser confirmation.

· The next step is confirmation of the SSL security certificate.

· The browser assures that the certificate sent by the SSL web server is trustworthy.

· If the certificate is confirmed, it transmits a message to the web server.

· However, if it fails, the browser makes a warning and stimulates the user to authorize or deny the legitimacy of the web server certificate.

There are different types of SSL certificates; for example, domain validation, organization validation, EV certificate, SGC certificate, and Code Signing Certificate. Each certificate is used for different purpose.

Domain Validation: Domain Validation is a primary domain certificate that comes with easy installation process. It is a cost saving certificate and available at low-cost in the market.

Organization Validation: The Certificate authority issues business validation certificate after the verification of business documents. It boosts confidence of customers and proves web site’s legitimacy.

EV Certificate: EV certificate also called “Green Bar Certificate” that turns your address bar into a green bar and provides protection against phishing and online attacks. Many companies and institutions prefer an EV certificate for their website security.

SGC Certificate: If you have an old browser version which is not capable of handling 256-bit encryption then SGC Certificate helps to offer strength to your old browser version.

Code Signing Certificate: Code Signing helps software developers in signing software code. It assures that software code is legitimate and not altered.

Before selecting a proper SSL security, the website owner has to decide the type of SSL Certificate, cost, after service, money back guarantee, authenticity of SSL provider authority.

Horse Tack Explained

Horse tack is the equipment of various kinds worn by horses whenever people use them for riding and shows. Horse tack is made up of saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, bits, harness, and martingales. A horse also uses a horse blanket.

Saddle – the seat placed on the back of the horse. The saddle is attached to the horse by a girth or cinch which is a wide strap. Saddles come two main categories, the English saddle and the Western saddle.

The English saddle is used in every Olympic equestrian discipline. This has no horn and its panels are pairs of pads which are attached to the side. These pads can be filled with foam, air or even wool. The Western saddle is designed for Western riding and is also known as the cowboy saddle. Unlike other saddles, this doesn’t have pads of its own so it is used with a saddle blanket or separate pad to allow a safer and more comfortable fit for riders.

Parts of the saddle – the tree- base where everything is attached; the seat for riders; the pommel or swell (the slightly raised section at the front ); the cantle or back of the saddle; the stirrups in the feet of the rider are placed for leverage and support; the leather or fender (leather straps connecting the stirrups to the tree, and the D-ring ( the D shaped ring at the front of the saddle where other pieces of the horse tack are attached).

The breastplates and breastcollars are additional devices used to keep saddles from sliding back. These are used for faster-paced sports.

Bridle – an arrangement of straps around the head of the horse mainly used for communication by the rider with the horse. The bridle holds the bit attached to the reins. The bridle is used for riding, controlling the horse.

The bridle, also called the headstall, consists of: crownpiece, cheek piece, throatlatch, browband, noseband, cavesson and reins.

Halter – an arrangement of straps used as a headgear/headcollar to guide the horse. It fits over the back of the horses neck and around the mouth. When the rider pulls on the halter, the head of the horse turns towards the rider.

Unlike the bridle, the halter doesn’t have a bit placed on the mouth of the horse.

The bit and hackamore are placed at the head of the horse. Like the bridle, these are used for control and communication. The bit is placed at the mouth of the horse while the hackamore goes around the nose of the horse.

The basic types of bit are the curb bit, snaffle bit and the Pelham bit. Different bits offer different levels of control and pressure to the horse by the rider. The bit is designed to fit the needs and condition of the horse so as to serve its purpose properly.

The hackamore is made of rope, leather, cable or plastic and is used if the horse has dental or tongue problems and also in winter to avoid hurting or freezing the mouth of the horse.

Harness – a complicated arrangement of straps that attaches a horse to a cart or sleigh. Depending on the type of vehicle or load the horse is intended to draw, there are different kinds of harnesses.

Martingale – a strap that keeps the horse from putting its head above the point of control and keeps the horse from tossing its head in a way which puts the rider’s safety at risk. The martingale has various types such as the running martingale, standing martingale and the Irish martingale.

Horse blanket – warmth and comfort for the horse and to protect it from other elements. This is made especially to fit the body of the horse. It has straps crossing underneath the horse so that it stays in place when the horse moves. There is a hole in the appropriate place to accommodate the horse’s tail.

In nature the long hair of the horse keeps it warm in winter. But horses are preferred with short hair and it is believed that a horse blanket keeps it short. For shows it’s important that horses have short hair.

Broadcast Audio Processing – The "Black-Art" of Broadcasting!

All broadcast transmission chains have at least a rudimentary degree of broadcast audio processing to reduce the dynamic range of the programme material. Now “reducing the dynamic range” might sound bad in a hi-fi sense, but don’t let that put you off. In the real world most your listeners are not hi-fi buffs, and besides hardly any are listening in hi-fi environments. Most will be listening to you as they get on with their daily lives in the kitchen, in offices, factories, driving in the car etc. These environments are “hostile” in audio terms, so you need something to help your station cut-through the background noise to make it listenable.

At its simplest an audio processor is just an audio limiter that keeps your transmissions legal by preventing them from being too loud (the technical term is “over-deviating”). This is OK to keep you legal, but does not sound nice when the limiter operates. You could just set your audio levels low enough so it never limits, but then your broadcasts would sound very quiet.

The answer is multi-band audio processing. Practically all public service and commercial stations use this. The primary advantage is that it boosts the loudness of the broadcast, while preventing over-deviation. There are also some additional benefits, however there can be pitfalls too – Broadcast audio processors have many, many adjustments available, and when set-up incorrectly they can make broadcasts tiring to listen to, or just plain “horrible”! That’s where the “black-artistry” comes in – when correctly adjusted broadcast audio processors can make the whole station sound better and more professional – we are not exaggerating!

Broadcast Audio Processors typically have three main stages:

  • AGC – Automatic Gain Control – this section acts a bit like a technical operator sitting in the studio. If the programming (or guest) is a bit quiet, it slowly and gently boosts the audio level. If things are getting a bit loud it turns it down slowly. Just this function alone is incredibly useful in Community Radio where many presenters are inexperienced and have poor control of their audio levels
  • Multi-band compressor or limiter – this section is the clever bit. It splits the audio into several frequency bands (often 5 or more) so that bass sounds, mids and trebles are processed separately. This prevents most/all of the problems of the basic single-band limiters mentioned above. Each band is compressed in dynamic range – ie: the quiet bits boosted and the loud bits reduced. This is similar to the AGC above, but done much more quickly. It is in this area where the “sound-signature” is created as it can drastically alter the tonal nature of the audio
  • Final limiter – this is a very fast-acting limiter that cuts any remaining signal peaks to ensure that your transmissions stay legal and you do not over-deviate. Non-broadcast audio processors made by some of the cheaper makes do not have this stage.

So that’s it in a nutshell. Broadcast audio processing is really important to your station. You can go for hardware broadcast audio processing units such as the Orban Optmod (in your dreams!), Omnia or the more affordable DSPX, or there are various software solutions as well. On our website we have an audio demonstration of the impact of broadcast audio processing. Check it out here: http://a-bc.co.uk/audio-processing/

Pierced Ears And Earrings – Add A Bit Of Sex Appeal

If you are trying to add a bit of sex appeal with a piercing, you may not have thought of an ear piercing. However, yes, earrings can add some sex appeal. Why do you think that women have been wearing earrings for hundreds of years now? Earrings just seem to have a very sensuous and sexy appeal to them, and you can use them to make you look great in a variety of different ways.

Draw Attention to Your Neck

When it comes to ear piercings, you can wear certain types of earrings to draw attention to your neck. The neck on a woman is a very sensuous part of the body that people overlook, but wearing the right earrings, such as chandelier earrings can really draw attention to the curve on the neck. Also, not only do they highlight your neck, but they beautifully frame your face as well, really adding to your charm.

Accent Your Face with the Right Earrings

No matter what face shape you may have, you can use the right earrings to accent your particular face shape. If you have an angular face, then use some round earrings to soften it up. Also, if you happen to have a rounder face, longer earrings are going to look great and they’ll help to lengthen and slim your face as well.

Achieve a Free Spirited Look

The right earrings can also help you to achieve a free spirited look as well. All you need is some big hoop earrings and you’ll get a very carefree and spirited look that is reminiscent of a gypsy. Even with just a pair of jeans and a plain top, you can use the right earrings to look really amazing.

Show You’re a Woman to Be Admired

Wearing beautiful earrings in your ear piercings is a great way to show that you are a woman that should be admired. You can add some glitz and glamour with diamond earrings, or you may want to show a softer side with pearls in your ears as well. If you want to go for a very elegant and glamorous look, then chandelier earrings are a perfect choice as well. So, go ahead and show your sexy side and wear beautiful earrings that highlight your sex appeal.

For Travelers – A Little Bit Of Guam Lifestyle

If you enjoy eating, scuba diving and relaxing the island of Guam is for you. The people from Guam are notoriously famous for their Fiestas. Especially when it comes to Wednesday evenings at the Chamorro village of Agana. While you enjoy the local cuisine you can watch the dancing spectacles, whether the Salsa or traditional Chamorro. The barbecued chicken, finadene, kelaguen, and red rice are the staple foods of the island and although they’re not the healthiest food to eat they are most definitely delicious. Anybody and everybody is invited. Fresh seafood is in abundance from the assortment of restaurants to choose.

Adding on to the fiestas, Guam travel has option like skydiving, para sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, shell collecting, deep sea fishing, hiking to waterfalls, beach combing or just enjoying the beautiful sunsets of Tumon Bay where the colors of the sky radiate colors from an exotic painting.

If you’re new on the island you will need transportation to attend all these different activities. Public transportation is available however it really is unreliable. Taxi service is also available however it is quite expensive for a short ride. Although Guam is only approximately 200 square miles bicycling is somewhat dangerous due to the lack of curbs on the roads and the general local drivers are a little uncaring.

The best option really is to rent a car that will get you to where you want to go with safety and efficiency. The Guam car rental industry is quite competitive so you can get pretty good rates although they are a little higher than the US. Maybe about an average of $42/day depending on the quality of the car rental company.

The rules of the road are generally the same as US mainland laws as the island of Guam is an unincorporated Territory of the USA. However local drivers tend to drive through yellow lights (even red lights) so beware at the intersections. The highest legal speed limit in Guam is 45 mph although the general traffic drives about 5-10 mph faster. The police although relaxed generally demand respect if a situation begins to get out of hand.

Also be aware of the roads that are a light grey color (not asphalt). These roads were constructed with corral reef is part of the concrete mixture and so get quite slippery when it rains, almost ice like. If someone speeds sometimes local drivers follow the speeder and tell them to slow or just give them bad looks. Generally speaking though driving on Guam is a pleasant experience and not much different then the US. So as you traverse the island remember to be safe, respect the local people’s land and enjoy the beauty of a tropical paradise.

Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan: A Bit of a Cinderella Story

“The water. The minerals make it denser than the Dead Sea and that is the draw card. If it was fresh water we would be just like any other puddle-jumping lake on the prairies,” smiles Eric Upshall, the recently re-elected mayor of Manitou Village. He puffs up slightly, “And now we have bragging rights.”

The waters of Manitou – which means ‘god’ in the Cree language – have long been known for their healing powers. Without a lifeguard in sight, it is literally impossible to sink. The waters are rumoured to have cured everything from smallpox to acne to liver problems. And it is the only lake in Canada where you can read a book while you float around. If you don’t shower when you come out of the lake, the salt will dry and your skin will look as though you’d been lightly dusted with flour, ready for frying.

Some History

Manitou Beach hit the spotlight in the 1920s and 30s. It had everything the then vacationing public dreamed of and it co-stared with places like Banff and Jasper. At the height of its career it counted three dancehalls, two indoor pools, stores, hotels, ice-cream parlours, and a Y.W.C.A. And to balance that pristine images, bootleggers and brothels.

By the 1980s, however, the curtains were closing and the beach rivalled the geriatric stepmother: still breathing, but closing in on the death rattle. A ‘cabin at the beach’ meant hauling in a granary, cutting in a few more windows and slapping together an outhouse in the bush. The gravel pit – where the teenagers clustered to drink beer – was the most popular destination at the beach.

What infrastructure? The pothole littered roads were an obstacle course; buildings were in various stages of rot. Nobody was ever on the pebble stone beach. It was a wind-swept stage. And you could hear the last-breath coughing coming from the wings. The three ugly sisters – no budget, apathy and decay – had top billing. The buzzards were circling, waiting for the final curtain call.

Then, in October 1987, the Chalet Pool burned down.

And the Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa – which alternated between playing the roles of the fairy godmother and the pumpkin over the years – made an entrance.

Built on the cinders of the old pool it took a lot of wand-waving for the Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa to evolve into a year-round complex. The project started with a collaborative community effort – if you didn’t buy shares you weren’t allowed on coffee row – and a government grant. For the first few years the dividends were free swim vouchers, which most of the local shareholders didn’t bother to redeem. Dale Hayter – a local business operator who owned a major block of shares – bought and privatized the operation in 1998 and set it up as a family-run business.

Although it has had its stage entrances, exits and cast calls over the years, ‘the spa’ – as the locals refer to it – is holding its own. The salt – remember it is denser than the Dead Sea – is corrosive and makes for demanding upkeep. Think of what the salt on the highways does to cars and multiply it by 25 to calculate the rust factor.

Twenty-five years on, the Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa celebrated its anniversary in May 2012. Morphed into the full-time fairy godmother, it now employs 50 people. The hotel complex has 102 rooms. The complex also houses a pool-side café, a gift shop, and a massage service. And the view of the lake from Sam’s Steak House makes it a popular dining spot.

The Village Does Cinderella

Like the Cinderella rags to a ball gown, the granaries disappeared in a puff of smoke. And in their places aren’t cabins, but houses, some of which are big enough to have a ballroom. The golden slipper was that in 2005 the village passed a law stipulating that all properties had to be hooked up to running water and sewer. Although some of the residents pulled an ugly sisters act and tried to squish their ideas into the shoe, the Cinderella factor persevered. Running water spelled the death knoll of the honey-wagon business, but it upped the appeal and property value of the beach. In 2005 a reverse osmosis water treatment plant became operational. Like the pumpkin to stagecoach transformation, the village went upmarket.

Cinderella turned out to the girl-next-door and Manitou Beach has a rather “wholesome” air about it. Predictable even. So what sort of people go there? The two main categories are families and seniors. It is the sort of place you can take your great aunt Sue for a holiday and know there won’t be any surprises. In fact, it is so squeaky clean that you have to work at finding much trouble to get into. No bootleggers, no brothels. Pashing it up in the backseat of a car while watching a movie at the drive-in theatre is about as risqué as it gets.

Mike’s Beach Bar – with regular volleyball games out back on Thursday night – just doesn’t cut it as a pick-up spot. Danceland – which claims to be ‘world famous’ because of the coils of horsehair under the hardwood floor – attracts people who want to polka or square dance. Those slinky, bodies-rubbing-together tango types will have to go elsewhere. And, really, does it get much more ‘respectable’ than leaving money in the honour cash box if you do a round at Murray’s Disc Golf?

With so many small Canadian places disappearing from the map it is refreshing to know that some can, in fact, have a bit of cosmetic surgery and resume their place on the stage. And the Cinderella transformation of Manitou Beach leads the pack.

A Jump Rope Workout to Lose That Last Bit of Stubborn Body Fat

Most People Have Never Attempted a Jump Rope Workout.

When was the last time you jumped rope? For most people the answer would be back in Elementary School or possibly Junior High. It’s actually too bad, because it is a very efficient form of exercise. Most people could easily walk for 15 minutes, but I would bet less than 1 percent of adults could jump rope for 15 minutes straight. Very few people, besides boxers, have ever seriously used the jump rope to achieve top condition.

What Muscle Groups are Worked?

Jumping rope will seriously work every muscle in the body. I’m convinced that it will expose your weak links. Honestly, I think my entire body was sore. I was especially sore in my calf muscles as well as my abs. As a side note I will say that jumping rope will help you in your quest to get super-ripped abs. Your core really gets worked hard since you have to use your abs to stabilize your entire body to help you propel your body through the air.

How Jumping Rope Helps Your Body Release Fat Burning Hormones.

HGH is a natural hormone that your body releases to burn body fat. You have probably seen many ads for pills that will help increase your natural levels of HGH. This was really popular about 5 years ago, but you don’t hear too much about HGH anymore. A high level of HGH in your body is the quickest route to burning body fat! Unfortunately, low intensity cardio won’t help your body release HGH. The best way to increase HGH is performing high intensity cardio for 30-60 seconds or so, followed by a minute or two of walking or low intensity cardio. This is called High Intensity Interval Training.

What Type To Purchase?

I recommend getting a “speed rope”… these run around $15 at most sporting good stores. They are plastic ropes without the beads. You also don’t want to buy the weighted ropes. Get a jump rope that is adjustable. You are going to want to adjust the rope to an optimum level to jump quickly without hitting your head. If it is too long, you won’t be able to jump at a fast rate.

How To Adjust to the Correct Height:

  • Set your rope on the ground
  • Stand on the midpoint of the rope (an equal distance between the handles)
  • Grab the handles and pull them up to your chest while standing on the rope
  • If the top of the handles reach above your collar bone the rope is too long
  • If the top of the handles reach your upper abs or lower, the rope is too short
  • I like to adjust the rope so the handles hit about 6 inches below my collar bone
  • If in doubt, go a bit too long and shorten the rope a bit as you get more experienced

Your First Two Weeks of the Program, Take Time to Learn the Skill

Most beginners “double bounce” in between rotations. This actually allows them to rest their core a bit as well as their calf muscles in between rotations and means that they have a low level of core fitness. You will want to jump cleanly in between each rotation and keep the abs and core tight.

Your arms should barely move when you jump rope. The rotation of the rope should come from wrist movement. If you want to increase the speed of the rotations, simply increase the tightness of the circles that your wrist is making (this will make more sense when you start jumping rope). The goal of your first two weeks of jumping rope is to eventually work up to a point where you can jump rope for 5 minutes solid without having to stop and start again. This means that if you have to stop because the rope hits your feet, you have to start again from zero. You also want to be able to jump rope alternating feet, so it looks like you are running.

A Great 15 Minute Workout that You Can Customize to Your Liking

  • Stand in front of a clock or timer of some sort
  • Jump Rope for 3 minutes to warm up
  • Rest for 30 seconds
  • Jump rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds
  • Rest for 30 seconds
  • Jump Rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds
  • Rest for 30 seconds
  • Repeat this alternating pattern for 15-20 minutes

Note: For the 60 second sprint, you can do it in running fashion, you can learn how to rotate the rope twice for every one jump, etc. As you get more advanced, you will be able to make the 60 second sprint extremely intense. Also, if you want to take advantage of the fast heart rate and burn even more body fat, hit a treadmill or exercise bike for 20-30 minutes after your jump rope workout. Oh yeah… you might need a towel… you should be sweating like crazy!

Hit this routine hard and you will begin to see definition over your entire body!
