I2C Protocol Subtleties, Part 4: Unexpected STOP

This is the 4th in a series of articles on the more subtle aspects of the I2C protocol (which cover TWI and SMBus implementations as well). In the previous article, we discussed why there’s really no such thing as a ‘missing’ STOP on the I2C bus. Now it’s time to look at the potential issues around STOP, namely an “Unexpected” STOP as well as some bus errors around STOP. This deeper understanding of all potential bus errors can aid the engineer to craft a more robust system that tolerates and even recovers from these errors.

STOP is used to end a single- or multi-byte transfer, and relinquish control of the bus in a multi-master configuration. A Repeated START can accomplish roughly the same thing, but without relinquishing control in a multi-master environment.

STOP is always generated by the Master, never by the Slave. Since generating a STOP requires the Master to have control over both SCL and SDA, it is not guaranteed that it can do so at any time whatsoever. If the Slave is currently transmitting a ‘0’ data bit, the Master cannot issue a STOP. Of course, since the Master controls SCL, even in a software-based implementation it could theoretically monitor every data bit in a Slave-transmitted byte and issue a STOP at any time a Slave is sending a ‘1’.

Rather than showing up in the middle of a data byte, it is more likely that an implementation error would result in a STOP occurring at other specific points in the bus state flow. The following paragraphs detail these state flow patterns.

STOP after ACK:

In normal operation, a STOP will follow a NAK, whereas if an ACK is received the Transmitter will continue the operation with additional byte transfers. Therefore, receiving a STOP after a valid ACK can be termed ‘unexpected’, but might not be classified as an error per-se.

STOP without a preceding ACK/NAK:

In this case, the ACK/NAK bit is not seen at all, as the STOP is being issued prematurely. This is clearly a bus error, as the ACK/NAK bit is intended to be sent for every byte, under all conditions. However, it is more likely to be reported by a protocol analyzer as a ‘missing ACK bit’ than as an unexpected STOP bit.

STOP initiated from a bus idle condition (no preceding START or data or ACK):

It is possible to generate a STOP from an Idle bus state, by initially dropping SCL (thereby avoiding a START), then dropping SDA, then raising SCL, and finally raising SDA. Although a START was not present, a given Slave implementation might react in unexpected ways to the sudden appearance of what appears to be mid-byte clocking of the SCL line, and potentially a misbehaving slave device might try to output a Low on SDA once SCL has gone low. This condition is clearly also a bus error. A protocol analyzer would likely first report an unexpected Clock or data bit, followed by the unexpected STOP.

Again, it is theoretically possible for a Master to initiate a STOP even in the middle of a data byte, although this would not be viewed as ‘normal’.

During multi-master arbitration, it should be noted that it is not legal, per the I2C bus specification, to issue a STOP from one Master at a point where a data bit is being sent.

Finally, it should be noted that using the 10-bit addressing mode, versus the 7-bit mode, imputes no difference in the behavior or operation of the STOP condition.

As a special caution, all Master and/or Slave software-based implementations should be capable of recognizing a STOP (or a START for that matter) at any point in a bus transaction and reacting correctly, in order to prevent cascading errors. A STOP should force all devices to relinquish the bus and reset their internal states to the Idle condition.

This completes the discussion of STOP. Next, we’ll delve into the wonderful world of Repeated START. This topic didn’t receive a lot of direct attention in the I2C bus specification, so the discussion is certainly warranted. Thanks for reading!

Connecting with loved ones who are no longer with us is a vital part of healing and adapting to grief and loss in our life. * A rocky outcrop looking out to the ocean – I walk along the beach often. There is just something about being near the ocean, which I find incredibly beautiful and peaceful. Sometimes, I’ll sit on a boulder and just look out to the fathomless sea. Being there automatically puts me into a more gentle space.

Distractions are few and when I look up at the sky, I consider what it is to be here and then gone. My loved ones become uppermost in my thoughts. I have given my mind space the quietness to reflect, to allow, to connect. That time in nature means I can also benefit from the healing powers of such an environment. I can inhale all it offers to me freely. Allowing its space to truly touch me in a number of different ways.

* My home sanctuary – This could be a room which is peaceful or tranquil and feels good to be in. It could also be a special table or bench for you to display mementos of your loved one. A place of remembrance and connection. Photos, flowers, candles, angels, favourite toys, personal items, spiritual texts…many many items or very few.

Just recently I had the honour of sharing another’s grief and to be invited into their homes. Without exception they had a special area where they could go and remember and connect with their loved one. Each was displayed with special mementos recognizing what that person meant to them.

I have them too, one in my office where I am every day and a different one on my bedside. It can be a comforting place that which is with us in our everyday world.

* The quietness of a cathedral – I have always found walking into a beautiful old church or cathedral a truly calming and peaceful experience. There is something about the feel, the smell and the majesty of the huge vaulted ceilings in these places which immediately connects me to some spiritual feeling within myself. Being there transports me to somewhere other than the everday. Somewhere I can open my heart and allow the sensation of connection with those I have lost, to become greater in my soul.

Many times, I have wanted to sit in stillness in a cathedral or church and soak up all it could give me, in a vault of silence and peace. Even now, in passing I will enter a church and sit, for a few minutes or longer and connect with myself and my beautiful others, as I did recently in Sydney.

* Paths with heart – Labyrinths – I have always been fascinated with the symbolism of labyrinths and was delighted when I found a local stone labyrinth in a natural bush garden close to my home. I used to visit it often and walk the meandering path which guided me to its centre and back out again. It was incredibly peaceful.

In recent times when I have walked it has been truly amazing. It’s a very hard thing to explain but when I was there, it was as if Stuart was too, there was no separation. After walking the path, I would sit and write and still have those writings of a time when he seemed to be walking with me.

The popularity of labyrinths is growing, if you can find one near you, try it. They have been described as ancient paths of wisdom and peace. My experience with them has been profound.

* Place of memorial – I recently spent a few days back in the region where my daughter placed a roadside cross. Over the years it has changed. New growth has sprung up around the tree and the cross itself has become tarnished and worn from the elements. It is in a remote location, where the wind rustles through the trees in the stillness. It is a powerful experience for me to be there. It immediately provides a sense of connection but also one of remembrance, love and sharing.

Visiting the place where your loved one has died or they are memorialised can be a very sacred place to connect.

Centuries ago there would have been only cemeteries, and whilst there still are, there is now much more. Niche walls, roadside memorials, mass memorial walls and sculptures of remembrance. There are many of us who establish an online memorial site or a Facebook page dedicated to our loved ones. The importance of connecting and remembering is something that allows us to grieve and to heal. Visiting a memorial place allows us to do this in a tangible way.

Microprocessors and Microcontrollers

There is no strict border between microprocessors and microcontrollers because certain chips can access external code and/or data memory (microprocessor mode) and are equipped with particular peripheral components. Some microcontrollers have an internal RC oscillator and do not need an external component. However, an external quartz or ceramic resonator or RC network is frequently connected to the built-in, active element of the clock generator. Clock frequency varies from 32 kHz (extra low power) up to 75 MHz. Another auxiliary circuit generates the reset signal for an appropriate period after a supply is turned on. Watchdog circuits generate chip reset when a periodic retriggering signal does not come in time due to a program problem.

Almost every microcontroller family has members that are provided with an A/D converter and a multiplexer of single-ended inputs. Input range is usually unipolar and equal to supply voltage or rarely to the on-chip voltage reference. The conversion time is given by the successive approximation principle of ADC, and the effective number of bits (ENOB) usually does not reach the nominal resolution 8, 10, or 12 bits.

There are other special interface circuits, such as field programmable gate array (FPGA), that can be configured as an arbitrary digital circuit. Microcontroller firmware is usually programmed in an assembly language or in C language. Many software tools, including chip simulators, are available on websites of chip manufacturers or third-party companies free of charge.
