What You Must Know About Pewter Wine Goblets

When people buy wine goblets they’ll tend to go straight for either glass or crystal, never bothering to look at the more traditional alternatives such as clay, pewter or wood.

Pewter is a metal alloy which if smoothed and varnished looks very similar to silver which a shiny metallic appearance. They’re a very traditional drinking goblet and when glass and crystal were highly rare luxuries they were more often present at a noble’s table.

They offer a different flavor of drinking than glass goblets because they infuse a slight metallic tang to the wine. Some people will obviously see this as a flaw as opposed to an advantage, but most others see it as an acquired taste. Just as beer is considered rarely a tasty beverage to many when they first start to drink it, over time they come to adore the taste. The same is true from drinking from pewter because the change in the taste of wine is acquired and for many improves the taste.

It has other advantages of course, a practical one being that they’re very difficult to break and can be dropped on the floor all day with little damage taken. They’re also somewhat different and unique because most households admittedly don’t have pewter wine goblets so if standing out is what you want to do then presenting these at a dinner will surely do the trick.

One downside however is the price, because they’re definitely most expensive than either glass or crystal by usually around fifty dollars at least.

Problems With House Training Your Dog? Try These Tips

Some dogs are easier to house train than others. House training really starts in the litter with the mother. A clean mother will pick up her pups and take them out of the sleeping area to relieve themselves.

If this does not happen the puppy can be difficult to house train. Puppies that come from pet stores can also be very difficult to house train. Pet stores keep puppies in cages where they eat, sleep, urinate and defecate right in the cage.

This makes house training difficult. A lot of dogs that I see in shelters are very hard to house train and I always strongly suspect that is why they are in the shelter.

If your dog is giving you a hard time and seems impossible to house train here are some tips for you.

1. Get your dog on a schedule. Don’t wait for your dog to give you a sign. Take your dog outside before he has the opportunity to make a mistake. For very difficult dogs start on an hourly basis.

2. Teach your dog a signal. The easiest signal is to hang a bell on your door. Put a little peanut butter on the bell. When your dog touches the bell say, “Good dog” and take her outside. Every time you go out the door have your dog touch the bell. In a short time your dog will understand that touching the bell means outside.

3. Proper clean up. Don’t clean up with any products made out of ammonia. Ammonia smells like urine to your dog. Using any product that has ammonia will smell like a strange dog has come into your house and urinated over your dog’s spot.

4. Go with your dog when your dog goes outside. You have to be there to reward your dog for going in the right area. If you tie out your dog or have a fenced in yard you won’t be there to let your dog know that they have gone in the right area. This is a very important tip to remember.

5. The final tip I can give you is to not severely punish your dog when they have an accident. A lot of dogs that have been strongly punished learn to hold it when the owner is around. I have worked with a lot of dogs that would not do anything in front of the owner. The were too nervous. Harsh punishment can backfire your training efforts.

By following these tips you should get some results with your dogs house training. Remember that this is really not a behavior problem. It’s a location problem. You just need to help your dog learn the right location. Good luck.

How To Have An Iron Body Through Tai Chi Practice

We’ve all seen movies where in the middle of a fight a hero’s enemies land what would ordinarily be devastating blows. The hero might stumble for a moment or two, but is ultimately able to withstand the hits and go on fighting and land overwhelming blows. Although these movie fights are just fiction, there are real ways to train to be able to have a body that, to an attacker, feels like iron.

There are two basic types of iron body training. The first of these is external iron body training. This basically involves pounding the body with heavier and heavier blows so that it gets used to taking these huge shocks to the system. This method can work. However it has major drawbacks. It is very hard on the person being trained and can seriously wear on the body later in life. Because its harmfulness, this method is not recommended.

Fortunately, there is a healthier way to achieve an iron body: internal training. In the past, only external methods of training were really available for martial arts students because internal methods were kept secret by those who practiced them. But today these methods are more openly taught.

Internal iron body involves several goals. The first goal is called Golden Bell Covered. Golden Bell Covered allows practitioners to withstand harder and harder hits. However, more importantly, Golden Bell Covered enables those who use it to disperse the energy from these hits so that the don’t do any damage to the recipient.

Internal iron body also involves the quality of steel wrapped in cotton that many of the Tai Chi classics talk about. This means that a Tai Chi martial artist can lightly tap an attacker and yet the blow will feel to the opponent like they are being hit with a steel rod wrapped in a thin layer of cotton about the thickness of a sock. These kinds of blows can be highly damaging.

At a higher level these skills can allow a practitioner to send the energy of a blow directly back to the opponent doing immediate damage such as breaking the wrist or the elbow or actually dislocating the shoulder of the striker.

Internal iron body does not come from simply hitting the body the way that external iron body is built. Instead, it comes through developing a set of skills and abilities that, at first, seem quite a ways away from what would seem to build this kind of ability. Among other things, internal iron body requires that practitioners be able to sense and manipulate the flow of energy through their bodies. This alone requires a number of abilities. Students must be able use sung relaxation as well as being able to achieve peng where the body is internally connected. For sensing and manipulating energy practitioners must also have a deep level of rootedness as well as knowledge about a number of rooting techniques. Practitioners must also be able to work with two primary kinds of energy as well: heaven energy and earth energy. It is important to understand and work with these two basic kinds of energy forms both separately and together.

Internal iron body cannot be picked up instantaneously, but then on the other hand, it is not something that only a few people can learn in a lifetime. With training, even an average person can learn these skills.

Upper Body Strength For Ladies – The Best Upper Body Workout For Women in a Single Lift!

Upper body strength training for women has to focus on the improvement of core strength. As a strength and conditioning professional there is no better way to do this than by implementing the use of the overhead kettlebell press. This single exercise is done by you pressing the kettlebell overhead, but it doesn’t really involve the muscles you would think about using with such a lift.

First of all, pressing a kettlebell is a completely different ball game than pressing a dumbell. The design of the bell is unique and this makes just holding it a challenge. To properly press the kettlebell or any weight overhead for that matter involves the technique of utilizing your lats and overall core strength. To properly press the kettlebell overhead you have to start by having a good solid clean lift. Once you have a proper clean lift then your press will immediately improve. To start, clean and get the bell properly racked at your chest just off-centered of your midline before attempting the press. Once stationary holding the kettlebell you must press it in a circular motion in order to get it above your head. To do this simply circle or “angle out” your arm as you start to move the bell overhead. Once the bell is overhead you must then lock it out by locking your elbow joint and sucking your shoulder into the socket to secure the load overhead. You can do this with either a single kettlebell or a pair of bells. The key to doing this though involves the power of your breathing. As you press the bell you must learn how to breathe in such a way so that you tense up your core and abdomen. You want to do this as if you were bracing your body for some sort of impact. This added core tension is what is going to help you stabilize the load and successfully execute the lift. Learn to breathe without relaxing. Make sure that you lower the bell back to the rack position in the same exact way as you pressed it.

Once you master this technique with the press your upper body strength and fitness will drastically improve. This upper body lifting exercise will take your personal program to a whole new level leaving everything else in the dust! Take the time to learn more on kettlebell training by accessing the rest of my articles on the matter for free. Remember ladies that anyone can train hard, but only the best train smart!

Muscle Building With 1 Exercise!

I want you to imagine your workouts as they are now. Now after you have thought about it for a second I want you to think about what types of exercises dialed up the intensity of your workouts and got you into the best shape in your training experience. I guarantee you probably thought about times that you did a great deal of exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and maybe even cleans if you had experience with olympic style lifting. These are all great examples of multi-joint lifts that will get your body to develop the lean muscle mass quick. This is why I have included a great lift below to help you “dial up” the intensity of your workouts on a regular basis.

Muscle Building With 1 Exercise

If you are wanting to build muscle in a hurry then you have got to incorporate the multi-joint lifts and variations of the ones that I mentioned above. One great lift to help you to do this are kettlebell thrusters. By now you may be familiar with the ancient kettlebell and realize that this device has quite the reputation for building some superior muscle mass. Kettlebell thrusters involve the execution of a couple of movements. You see to begin this exercise you will want to have the availability of at least a single bell of moderate resistance. Begin by standing with your feet about shoulder width distance apart. Place the bell on the ground between your feet. From here simply perform the clean and rack to get the bell to your chest. Once you have the bell secure at your chest then you will want to perform a front squat while maintaining the position of the bell in front of your body. As you squat try to lower yourself to a depth so that your elbow touches the insides of your knee. This will ensure a good depth for your squat. As you ascend up out of the squat then simply lock out and perform an overhead press to get the bell overhead. Once pressed then simply lower the bell back to the racked position to start into the next squat.

This is a tremendous muscle building drill for your workout routine. Take the time to implement kettlebell thrusters into your workouts if you are serious about results. Remember that most anyone can train hard, but only the best train smart my friend!

Pet Jellyfish: Pacific & Atlantic Sea Nettles (Chrysaora Fuscescens & Quinquecirrha)

Sea Nettles are one of the most popular exhibits in public aquariums. Their movement looks like sheer poetry in motion. Sea nettles inhabit the Atlantic (Chrysaora fuscescens), Pacific Ocean (Chrysaora quinquecirrha). Depending on the species, they grow anywhere from 6 inches all the way up to three feet in diameter. Typically their trailing tentacles reach over twice that length. The Pacific is the larger of the two species. This jellyfish was successfully cultivated in Monterey California less than two decades ago. This was the first time they had ever been bred in captivity. Monterey was the first aquarium to exhibit jellyfish to the public.

A sea nettle’s sting in very often deadly to proportionately sized prey. Their sting is rated from moderate to severe in regards to human interaction. Their venom is not lethal unless it is the result of an allergic reaction. They will cause moderate discomfort levels in people that are not overly sensitive to jellyfish toxins. Toxicology reports on Japanese sea nettles (Chrysaora melanaster) indicate more serious reactions.

Sea nettle bells are semi-transparent. Pacific sea nettles can either be white and opaque in appearance or striped. Striped bells are typically reddish-brown adorned with small white dots. The species native to the Atlantic is generally a pale shade of pink or yellow and may also be striped. Long, flowing tentacles extend from the circumference of the bell generally stretching 2-3 times the bell’s diameter. Sea nettles have a single mouth opening on the underside of their bell. In addition to their mouth, they have a long, lace-like oral arm in the center of their bell that transports their food to their mouth opening.

Unlike most jellyfish, sea nettles are very good swimmers and swim continuously. They seem to prefer swimming against the current which is why they are so often seen swimming upside down in most pictures.

It should be noted that Pacific sea nettles are the larger of the two species. There are not any readily fabricated aquariums large enough to house them. They will require a custom built set up. You should also be aware that these jellies are indigenous to colder waters, from northern California to Alaska. They are accustomed to water temperatures in the mid-fifty degree range. Your jellyfish aquarium will require a water chiller to accommodate their environmental needs.

Travelling From Lake Bunyonyi to Kigali

Chris and I took a canoe out on Lake Bunyonyi for a couple of hours. It was so serene… until the thunderclouds rolled over. Plans for an afternoon hike disappeared as the rain came down.

Fortunately we awoke to clear skies (albeit still dark) the next morning as we set off before dawn to the meeting point for gorilla trekking. We climbed up to Ruhija, through the fog, watching the sun rise over the mountains. Tom and Chris trekked the Bitukura family of mountain gorillas, although saying “trekked” might be a bit of a stretch. The gorillas were only a few hundred metres from the road! Regardless of how long you trek though, it’s still an amazing experience to sit in such close proximity to these animals and observe their interactions with each other. You can really see how we are related to the gorillas and there is something profound about sitting in the forest with such close kin.

From Lake Bunyonyi we wound our way through the mountains into Rwanda, to Ruhengeri (or Musanze as it is also called). We spent half a day with John, a local guide who showed us the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo from the magnificent vantage point of Virunga Lodge. We enjoyed lunch on the lake shore, dreaming of buying land and having a holiday house in this stunning corner of the world.

Early the next morning Chris and I headed to the Parc National des Volcans to trek the Golden Monkeys. Like the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, the Volcanoes National Park is dense bush. And like the mountain gorillas in Bwindi, the Golden Monkeys do not care for paths to make it easy for us to get to them. But there’s a real feeling of adventure as you beat your way through what seems to be uncharted territory to find these rare creatures.

We decided to change our itinerary a bit and head to Lake Kivu instead of spending an extra night in Ruhengeri. The main tourist town on the lake is called Gisenyi and comes highly recommended. However it is right on the Congolese border with Goma only a few kilometres away and that very day, M23 rebels marched into Goma and seized it. On learning the rebels were nearly on Goma, we decided to avoid Gisenyi (it was just a bit too close for comfort) and instead went to Kibuye. To get to Kibuye, the most direct route again would be to go to Gisenyi and head south along the lake shore. But we felt safer taking a different route and ended up travelling through the most beautiful landscapes imaginable, well worth the detour. Our guesthouse, Hotel de Sainte Bethanie, was set right on the lake shore and our rooms looked out over the water.

We took a boat ride on the lake in the morning, landing on Napoleon Island for what we were told was to be a bird watching walk. Not a bird to be seen, but thousands and thousands of bats circling overhead. The island was actually a rather tall mountain jutting out of the lake, and we hiked to the top. From the top we could look out over the lake to the Democratic Republic of Congo in one direction and (in closer proximity) Rwanda in the other, as well as all the small islands dotting Lake Kivu.

Kigali was our last stop, where we visited the Genocide Memorial. It is a powerful exhibition, but challenging to comment further without sounding trite or waffling for pages. Our final dinner was at Hotel des Mille Collines, with pre-dinner cocktails by the pool before heading upstairs to the Panorama fine-dining restaurant. What a way to cap off a fantastic trip. Thank you Tom and Chris for being such awesome travel buddies, and great first clients!

10 University of Georgia Quirks, Facts and Traditions

o “The Arch,” an iron gate found on everything from the UGA logo to t-shirts is representative of the Arch on campus which was an original gateway to the school. Legend has it that if a freshman walks under The Arch during his first year, he will never graduate.

o When the UGA Bulldogs have won a home football game, the school’s Chapel Bell traditionally rings until midnight. Except when Georgia beats Georgia Tech, one of their biggest rivals- then the bell rings the entire night! In the old days, it was the job of freshmen to do the hard work of ringing the bell- today, fans, students, and alumni all take turns.

o During the 2007 Season, the bell was ringing after UGA’s defeat over the University of Florida, when the 877 pound bell fell. It has since been returned to the platform.

o The Bulldogs like to get their opponents ‘Between the Hedges.’ This is a reference to the hedges that grow all the way around the playing field of Sanford Stadium, and dates back to the 30’s, when a sports writer made the reference.

o In 1939, Coach Wally Butts decided silver pants would pair well with red jerseys- thus began the start of the Bulldog’s ‘silver britches.’ Although Coach Vince Dooley changed the pants to white for several years, the silver britches were brought back in 1980, and were worn during the school’s National Championship season.

o UGA has a student ID card and travels in his own dog house- with air conditioning! Because bulldogs are susceptible to heat stroke, he spends football games perched on bags of ice. If opposing teams get to close to his precious ice, he growls ferociously. He’s a tough pup, who wears a jersey with a Varsity letter and a spiked collar.

o The costumed bulldog mascot is called ‘Hairy Dawg.’

o Football players go through the ‘Dog Walk,’ which features players walking through crowds of fans on their way into Stanford Stadium, led by the Redcoat Band.

o Georgia’s original colors included ‘old gold,’ until the intense rivalry between Georgia Tech and Georgia resulted in a skirmish over colors- Georgia students declared yellow an unfit color for the Georgia Bulldogs, deeming it a cowardly color, and yellow was removed- and Crimson (also referred to as ‘Good old Georgia Red) and black have been the official colors ever since.

o College Football was nearly outlawed in 1987, after UGA Quarterback Richard Gammon was injured so severely in a game against the University of Virginia, he died as a result. In those days, players did not wear helmets. Football was immediately disbanded in schools across Georgia, and just as the Georgia Legislature was gearing up to formally outlaw college football, Richard’s mother wrote a letter, published in newspapers, asking the legislature to save football, saying it was her son’s most cherished object.” The ban was defeated, and college football in Georgia survived! Today, visitors to Rome, Georgia, Gammon’s hometown, can stop and pay tribute at the family graves, complete with plaques detailing the sad death and a mother’s great plea to rescue the sport so beloved by her son.
