The highlight of my most recent trip to Barbados was a most memorable Sunday morning hike through the countryside sponsored by the Barbados National Trust, a government organization that promotes the indigenous culture, art and natural history of this small island nation. The hike was approximately 4 hours in duration and by all means it was “no cakewalk”. There were about 100 participants in the hike, which was divided up into three groups based on ability and experience – fast, moderate and slow.

There is nowhere else in the Caribbean (and few places in the world) where such organized nature hikes take place on a regular basis. Furthermore, in the Caribbean, nature hikes are usually just a tourist activity – in Barbados, the nature hikes are geared more towards the native population and is an activity that promotes national pride and environmental awareness. About 80 % of the participants were Bajans (natives) and about 20% were visitors. Too bad other Caribbean counties have not instituted an activity like this.

Being a novice, I joined the slow hikers group, which was led by Colin Blackwell, a well respected Doctor and Educator who works for the Barbados National Trust. The hike itself, took us through a heavily forested gulley, a dark cave populated by bats and through a sugarcane field. Who would have imagined Barbados as having such a wild side? I truly enjoyed myself and met a lot interesting people including some visiting Jamaicans who used to live in the San Francisco Area

Murchison Falls National Park is the largest national park in Uganda. It covers three thousand eight hundred forty square kilometers stretching over the two districts of Masindi and Amuru.

It is Uganda’s safari jewel renowned for its diverse game viewing and the glamorous Murchison Falls from which it gets its name. The park is home to a range of African wild animals including four of the “big five” namely buffaloes, lions, elephants, and leopards. The rhinos existed in the park but by 1983 they had been fazed out by rampant poaching and guerrilla wars that rocked the country in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Other animals in the park include among others hippos, giraffes, crocodile, antelope, Uganda kob, Hartebeest, Oribis. Primates such as chimpanzees and monkeys are common in Rabongo Forest and Caniyo Pabidi forest. The park is a host to a variety of birds including the rare shoebill, white thighed hornbill, ducks, kingfisher, fish eagles, herons, and the yellow footed fly-catcher.

The two sections of Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is bisected by the mighty River Nile from east to west for a distance of seventy one miles. The river divides the park into the north and southern sections. This division played a huge role in preserving the northern section from poachers. The river made it difficult for poachers that were predominantly from the south to access the other part of the park. Because of this the northern section is endowed with more game compared to the southern which had faced a lot of poaching. However the Uganda Wildlife Authority has since stepped up efforts to protect the park from poachers and hunters.

Activities in Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is available for a number of adventure activities. They include among others.

Game Drives

Game drives in the part are mostly done in the northern section of the park for it is endowed with more game than the south. A ferry crossing is available for safari vehicles to the other section of the park. A satisfactory game drive lasts for about four to five hours to traverse the main game trails. An early morning game drive starting at about 6 to7am is preferred as most animals are still sleepy and less shy. The hunters like the lions and the leopards have not yet gone hunting and are occasionally encountered sleeping along the game trails.

Boat cruise

This is probably the highlight of a Murchison Falls National Park tour. It is a relaxing cruise of about three hours. During this cruise you see lots hippos, Nile crocodiles, buffaloes, waterbucks, lots of birds and lots of other typical African wildlife immersed in a spectacular savanna landscape. This boat ride goes up to the base of the Murchison Falls. The preferred time for this ride is at about 2.30pm when lots of animals come to the river to cool off the heat, eat fresh grass and drink in the river.

Top of the Falls Hike

One can hike to the top of the cliff close to the narrow gorge through which mighty Nile squeezes to cause a violent tempest below. It is really amazing to watch.

Chimpanzee tracking and bird watching in Kaniyo Pabidi

Kaniyo Pabidi is an untouched area of natural forest within Budongo Forest Reserve. The area is host to a range of wildlife including lots of chimps and birds. It is a great alternative to the traditional game drives and boat rides. You can track chimpanzees and watch lots of birds as you walk beneath mature mahogany and ironwood trees.

Sport Fishing

The Enchanted Forest is unlike any forest you’ll ever see anywhere else on the planet. Not because it’s filled with evil queens or magical creatures, but because of its unique gnarled trees found only in this former German Colony. Locals believed them to be thrown from Paradise since they look as if they’ve landed upside down.

If that isn’t reason enough to add Etosha to your Bucket List, how about if I told you about the Black Rhinos? This is but one of the 150 mammals living within this 22-thousand square kilometer wildlife sanctuary. If you want to see elephant, lion, zebra, impala, and oryx all in one place–you’ve found it.

Most of the activity within Etosha takes place around its 33 watering holes. All sorts of other African animals come here to drink, eat, and lounge around. Most of them congregate around the Okaukuejo, so good thing there are a number of chalets to spend the night after a long day of game viewing.

Namutoni on the eastern side of the Etosha has some Bush Chalets, built atop an old German Fort, offering outside showers (private, of course) and swimming. The Onkoshi Camp is small, just 15 units, with thatched roofs and decks to take in all the local vegetation and animals.

Right in the middle of it all is Halali, where leopard and elephant wandering around is just an average day. Night drives through here are exceptional, and the nature walks are really educational.

Just remember that Etosha’s summer (January to March) is hot & wet with rainy season starting in November; and winter night temperatures can drop below freezing–but the daytime temps average 18-25C (64-77F). That’s quite comfortable, and the best time to go game viewing at the watering holes.

You don’t have to stick to just the water to find some other unique and exotic animals of Namibia. It can be a lot of fun trying to identify the hundreds of bird species who live here. Those Lucky Ducks. Oops, no pun intended there. Oh, look! It’s a White-tailed Shrike, Rufous-cheeked Nightjar, and a Bare-cheeked Babbler. The flamingos, however, love the 5000 square kilometers of the salt pans. I’m sorry you’re jealous, Florida–you don’t have the monopoly on the spindly-legged, pink birds.

With everything that you’ll find within the Etosha National Park, it’s a surprise this doesn’t top everyone’s Bucket List. Trust me, you’ll love it.

A pirate wench has always been a favorite costume, and the recent success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has made dressing up like a pirate wench even more popular. Putting together a woman’s pirate costume is relatively simple, or you can purchase a complete outfit with all the pieces you need. A pirate lady costume can be worn again and again to any costume party or Halloween event. It’s the type of costume you can put on whenever you need a touch of fantasy in your life.

For a feminine pirate costume, begin with a skirt. It can be long or short. Pirate lady’s skirts are usually black, red or striped. A peasant skirt with a full petticoat can be used for a pirate wench costume. If you want, you can cut fringes into the hem to make the skirt look worn and tattered. To the northwest of the Mekong River are the provincial areas of Rattanakari and Mondulkiri, The Banlung area of Rattanakari has a growing reputation as the base for trekking around the crater lakes and the many waterfalls around the district. The waterfalls can be viewed flowing all year round. The area also has a National Park to the north and the Kumphat Wildlife Sanctuary to the South of Banlung.

Moving from the jungle areas of Rattanakiri to the more hilly areas of Mondulkiri offers a tougher adventure schedule to the visitor. Choices include three day elephant treks though the densely forested hills, visits to the ethnic tribes in hillside villages, and catching the spectacular views of the waterfalls. The Bou Sraa Waterfall is the most famous in Cambodia.

Moving to the South of the country the coastline area is developing an aquatic adventure following. Besides the very safe swimming beaches there are a number of authorised PADI dive centres based in Sihanoukville. Plan your river rafting trip carefully, keeping in mind the time you need for training before landing to the rushing streams and the various stoppages where you can trek and camp, if you are on a long rafting tour of about 5-6 days. The Garhwal and Kumaon hills situated at the foothills of the Himalayas provide some of the best white water rafting in India. The waters here are graded and classified to cater to the both amateurs and professionals.

It is important to note that all foreign nationals will need permits for their expeditions, which may weeks or months to obtain from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). Mountain climbing in J&K will also need special clearances and some regions might be restricted as this area borders Pakistan. All mountaineers must have an X Mountaineering Visa endorsed on their Indian visa by the Indian Embassy.

This is the best and easiest place to get a few of your adrenaline rushes all in one go. Elephant safaris to find tigers, crocodiles and some friendlier beasties like deer and birds. Then you can bungee jump, rock climb and cross rivers.

Get Up Close and Personal with an Elephant

There are many ways of seeing this magnificent animal in India, you can ride up to Amber (Amer) Fort from the road, take a tiger spotting safari on Elephant-back, or even see them wild at a special Elephant reserve. But you can also spot them occasionally in large cities walking on the roads collecting bananas that passers-by give them, with an occasional coin for his mahout. An aside, if you happen to be driving behind an Elephant in traffic, keep your distance. I once read about an unfortunate person who died when an Elephant got tired and sat down…on their car.

You can even help a Mahout wash his Elephant at a South Indian Elephant Temple. If you’re really good, you might be given the responsibility to scrub him with the coconut-husk loofah.
