Building a High-Performance Work Force

The quality of work life can be measured in part by the amount of time spent on the job and the flexibility of that time. If the income goal of workers has always been more, the counterpart goal for hours worked has always been less. Thus, the mark of improvement in worker welfare is reflected not only by higher real wages but by a shorter workweek as well.

Where more than one shift is employed, the part of the day to be worked has also been a matter of concern. The inconvenience of working nights has long been offset by premium pay, as has the inconvenience of working weekends and holidays.

Today, as a result of the enormous gains made in shortening work hours, there is increasing interest in the pattern of time worked. The employee interest in working fewer hours has not disappeared, but in popular debate it has been overshadowed in the 1970s by the interest, first, in the four-day week and, more recently, in flexible time.

Management has taken the initiative in experimenting with these different time patterns primarily in an effort to determine whether a more flexible approach to the hours of work would payoff in lower absenteeism, higher worker morale, and more efficient use of plant and equipment-with a resultant payoff in higher productivity

Proponents of the four-day week expected that it would take hold and spread rapidly, but available evidence suggests that although there was a rapid increase from 1970 to 1973, there was little growth in succeeding years. To what extent small changes in this trend may be due to short-run economic conditions rather than to longer run changes in preferences and habits is uncertain. But at least there is no evidence yet to indicate a great swing to the four days week. Additional firms have taken it up, but it has been estimated that up to 15 percent of the firms that tried it have dropped the experiment.

Fewer than 2 percent of full-time employees work a shorter than five-day week, with 1.1 percent working a four-day week.

From a managerial standpoint, what factors are likely to be important in determining whether a shift to a four-day week is desirable?

• In some industries there is a saving in startup and close time, which becomes a smaller portion of total time. There may also be other efficiencies in scheduling.

• Where absenteeism is higher than average, the three-day weekend may be sufficiently attractive to workers to reduce the unscheduled absences. The evidence on this is not conclusive, however.

• Since the four-day schedule offers a 20-percent reduction in commuter time and commuting costs, lunches, and other work-related expenses as well as a 50-percent increase in the length of the weekend, the short workweek can be used as an incentive to obtain worker cooperation on other issues or merely as a boost to worker morale.

• From a public relations standpoint, the shift to a four-day week may help a firms local image as a progressive employer. It can appear not only as sensitive to the needs of employees, but as concern for saving energy and reducing congestion.

A shift to a four-day workweek is not without its risks however, not the least of which is the possibility of some disruption in work and the eventual failure of the effort. These risks are largely the converse of the statements favoring the shorter week. Worker fatigue may increase, and with it the absenteeism rate may stay the same or increase; quality may decline and the rate of output lags. The lure of greater productivity may prove to be illusory. Furthermore, some management spokesmen have worried that the acceptance of a four-day week, even if initially it is 40 hours, may speed up the trend toward a four-day week of 8 hours a day.

Early evidence suggests some gain in productivity. However, what is less certain is the significance of these gains. Are they attributable to temporary advantages in recruiting and holding experienced workers who are attracted by the savings in commuting and the gain of a longer weekend? If so, are they subject to competitive pressures that may make them short-lived? Are they attributable to the altered work schedule itself, to a Hawthorne effect, or mere novelty?

As yet it is too early to assess the effect of the four-day week on the firm because there have not been enough experiments; they have not been distributed widely enough by industry and location; and they have not been in effect long enough to enable analysts to differentiate short-run effects from lasting ones.

Flexible working time introduces a far more dramatic element into the workplace. Its appeal is its attack on rigidity which is as much a factor in the four-day week as in the five-day week. What flexible time offers workers is an opportunity to set their schedules in accord with their needs-to take care of personal business and their personal preferences so long as they work an agreed number of hours a month or, in some instances, each week. In some work situations there is generally a prescribed core time, usually in the morning and early afternoon, when all workers are required to be present. But in the most advanced forms of flexible time, pioneered in Europe, workers have considerable latitude in determining on which days as well as which hours to work.

The managerial rationale for flexible time is higher productivity. Two types of efficiency are sought. One is a reflection of individual differences. If, as some experts believe, workers perform differently at different times of the day, the freedom they are given to select their work times will result in higher performance on the job. The other type of efficiency is the reduction in unintentional tardiness resulting from delays in getting to work, longer lunch hours to take care of personal business, and so on-minor infractions that may not merit disciplinary actions but which overall could result in a substantial loss for a firm-what has been called time lost from erosion rather than formal agreement. In addition, there is the expectation that the greater autonomy given workers to regulate their own working lives will payoff in better morale and higher productivity. Such changes in morale and productivity may be achieved through, for example, the elimination of one of management prerogatives and a potential source of friction management’s ability to decide its own work schedule.

Evidence on the success of flexible time is subject to the same caveats as those stated above for the four-day workweek. Evidence is limited in scope and time. But the tentative results do seem more conclusive. Hours worked / hours paid for has increased, largely because of a reduction in tardiness and unrecorded leave and sick leave; absenteeism has declined. There is evidence, too, that workers tend to leave when work is slack and to stay and work longer when the work load is heavy.

Flexible time , on the other hand, does place additional burdens on workers and management. Record keeping, for example, becomes a bigger problem. Extended hours of daily operation may be required in some firms, thus contributing to higher operating and maintenance costs.

Annual vacations are about half as long on the average in the United States as in Europe-two weeks as compared with four weeks in France, for example. Such variability may someday extend to work patterns over a lifetime. The sabbatical academic life are being tried in some industrial settings and government employment. Early retirement has opened opportunities for second careers to some employees.

Thus, workers may be attracted to part-time work or work of a different character that offers greater satisfactions-or at least a trade of old frustrations for new ones. New patterns of education and training also fit into this more flexible approach because of the need for retraining occasioned by rapid changes in productive processes and administrative organization. The old pattern of learn first and work later may be less dominant as a pattern of life in industrial society.

In any event, tomorrow managers will have to take a broader view of time patterns in the workplace than the traditional one associated with the five-day, 40-hour week, two-week vacation pattern that has simplified life in so many work settings.

Source of Life – Gives Hope in Adversity?

As we know, social disorder and personal problems exist in human society and in our individual circumstances. We could end up immersing ourselves in negativity about this if we are not careful. Keeping ourselves awake at night with worry. Cursing fate for our plight. We might doubt whether there is any source of goodness around.

Spiritual awareness is rather a vague phrase but nevertheless it can lighten our load. We perceive a deeper side to reality when for example we notice a life force that makes things grow and flourish, whether it be in nature or in one’s personal life. Or when we feel in tune with a higher inspiration for our creative work. Or when we see evidence of a design within the order of the universe.

In whatever way we think of it, we can see reality as something greater than ourselves: as something beyond what is physical. It transcends our bodily experience and material concerns.

Religion

Religious cultures over history have venerated a similar idea envisioned in various supernatural guises.

Today, in western Europe, the churches are declining. However, many non-churchgoers designate themselves as ‘spiritual but not religious’. You may not be committed to a taught faith but do try to figure out what’s true, and what’s good, and then to start living a better life.

Western religion has a word in different languages meaning God. Some people, likewise use a capital for the first letter of their word for what they feel to be beyond themselves. Words used are Being, the Source, the All, the Divine, the Infinite, the Absolute etc. These words may be used slightly differently.

The Source

As I understand it, ‘the Source’ means there is a source of spiritual light and love.

“I am not aligned with a religious belief system but I do have a faith in something bigger, a divinity of some sort. I choose to call it ‘source’.” (Helen Leathers, personal development teacher)

We may sometimes feel separate from this Source. Nevertheless, we may believe we have a continuous connection with it. It is seen as a part of us as we seek wisdom, guidance, intuition, or inspiration. People sometimes say that a focus on this higher energy allows us to remember our mission, our vision, and our reason for being.

If the Source is real and not a figment of the imagination, a question arises. To what extent can we rely on it when times are hard? When we face what is bad in life?

The All of everything

Some speak of the higher reality in terms of ‘the All’, meaning the all of everything. The focus is on the all of life, the all of love, the all of goodness, the all of wisdom. This is a wonderful idea about what can enthuse and move us. However, I notice that the term ‘the All of everything’ also seems to imply the all of disease, the all of selfish desires, and the all of folly.

We are aware of the Holocaust, Stalin’s Gulag, Pol Pot’s Killing Fields. I would argue that we are so horrified by despicable events, as genocide, terrorist killings, and serial murder, that it is insufficient to refer to such atrocities as ‘bad’ or even ‘very bad’. We need to invoke a more basic idea of the ‘evil’ of some actions and of the delusional ideas that attempt to justify them.

The chaos caused by natural disaster, suffering of disease and evil of man’s inhumanity to man, have a very troubling influence on life as we know it.

The question about reliance on the spiritual Source when we face what is bad is a challenging one. What hope and trust can we place in the Source of goodness when we encounter evil? Here are some suggested answers.

Purpose of love

Just as there is a design in the orderliness of nature, so is there not also a creative plan for humanity? An intention within the higher reality to bring about stability and beauty in our lives? If it is love that is the cause of all of what is good, then I would say the Source of love intends our growth and fulfilment.

According to this view there is a purpose of higher reality to bring about human happiness for the sake of love. Love wants the best for who is loved.

“The essence of love is loving others… , wishing to be one with them and devoting oneself to their happiness.” (Emanuel Swedenborg, spiritual philosopher)

This loving purpose might be in the background when we bring on suffering to ourselves. I would say nothing happens by chance. We suffer when we lose our friends, our job, and the good regard of our loved ones. Where is a loving purpose within our unhappiness? Is it not to do with a self-compassion that allows us to learn from our mistakes? Obliging us to face up to the reasons for our loss – perhaps complacency, laziness, and self-centredness.

Power of love

I believe we are all potential channels for the power of love. When we connect wholeheartedly with the Source, love can win if we are faced with scorn, malice or contempt. Its power of healing, through our behaviour can give comfort to those who inwardly suffer from a myriad of various problems. Its power of understanding, through our words can inspire good sense and enlightenment no matter what irrational fears are being experienced.

Evil as no independent force

Another way, to have confidence in the Source, is to not exaggerate any power of evil. I favour the idea that evil, although real enough in its effects if given reign, does not really exist in its own right. In other words, social injustice, pain, misery have never been inevitable. What is chaotic and disorderly comes about because people at times have chosen to stand good on its head. I see the evil of suffering, and hatred as the tragic rejection and thus absence of orderliness, contentment and compassion. In fact, the inversion of all that is good.

I would like to suggest that the cause of chaos and disorder is not an evil power that some religions have sometimes, and mistakenly in my view, referred to as the Devil. Instead, an atmosphere of evil originates in the way humans sometimes have freely chosen to behave.

“It is human spiritual disorders like lust, vengeance, cruelty and oppression that incubate disease and misfortune.” (Bruce Henderson, Swedenborgian writer)

I happen to hold the view that disease and natural disasters are due to the negative side of this spiritual environment around us. Let us then all try to not feed its influence. We could instead turn towards the spirit of love. This is shown by the outpouring of service and kindness in the wake of disasters. Seeing others suffer can help us to be more sensitive and merciful.

Conclusion

We all have the potential to be a vehicle for both good and evil. In very trying times, putting one’s hope in the Source of love is not easy. But we all have a part to play in turning back towards Love Itself and helping with its plan to bring happiness in the world.

Marketing Techniques for Mobile Apps

You’ve put in the hours of work to create something wonderful. First of all, congratulations! It wasn’t easy, no doubt. Now all you need is an audience, right? Therein lies the problem, though. That coveted audience can be hard to find. Very hard, in fact. Your app can easily be buried in the slush pile that is the self-published markets, dismissed as not being worth the time, or worst of all: not seen at all! If you’re certain your only problem is that you lack an audience-that your product is perfect-then this guide to free marketing will, no doubt, be of some help.

If you’ve ever taken more than a peek at the mobile game marketplaces (Google Play, App Store, Windows Store) then you’ve seen the clones that occupy it. Each title is a synonym for Clash, Legend, Runner, or has a bird or an animal of some kind in it; the icons are usually a screaming person, a close up of food, or a rehashed classic in neon colors. While it would be wise to avoid these clichés, the takeaway here is that it’ll be difficult to stand out. So, to begin with your marketing campaign, start local. Build a base there; then expand.

Of course, tell your family and friends. Then-

Print out flyers with rip tabs at the bottom. Each tab should have the URL of your app printed on them. Interested consumers can pull off these tabs to help remind them to download it later. You can find free bulletin boards to post your flyers at most Laundromats and a lot of grocery stores. University campuses also typically have quite a few bulletin boards. Word of mouth is a good start, so think of each tab pulled as a new speaker, who’ll then tell friends around the world, who might in turn spread the word even further. Plus, consumers will often be kinder and more likely to write a positive review if they believe it’ll be helping someone in their circle-even if that circle happens to be the entire town. Loyalty works for sports teams; it can work for your app.

Create business cards to hand out whenever your app ever comes up in conversation. A custom bumper sticker or car magnets are a good way to make every drive you take an advertisement excursion. Avoid placing flyers under windshield wipers as this is more likely to annoy than cultivate interest. A custom made T-shirt with your app name, imagery, and where to download it is another good way to passively advertise while walking around large local events (balloon races, rib cook-offs, farmer’s markets).

After you’ve marketed locally, move on to the internet. Here you’ll obviously find a much larger potential audience. To start, make blog posts on your personal website(s) about your app or game. Also, create a YouTube game play video and video trailer to showcase your work. Also, as you’ll be sending out some emails, create an automatic signature with your name and links to your app or game.

Forums are a good place to find an audience. SlideDB, ModDB, IndieDB, and Penny Arcade allow you to submit a post about your game, as well as updates. Reddit is a hugely popular website with subreddits (smaller groups of particular interest) that welcome posts about indie games. /r/IndieGaming and/r/freegames are two such subreddits with a lot of followers, but a simple search can lead you to many more. The development software used to create the game also has related company forums, in which you may share your game. Beyond this, utilize social media. Post to Twitter, being sure to use hashtags such as #indiedev #gamedev and those more specific to your app or game, in order to get views beyond your followers. Tweet at indie game reviewers with your app information. Post to Facebook to connect with family and friends and keep them updated; and Instagram as well as Pinterest, again using tags to reach new markets. You can create a press release and submit it to press release websites in hopes of journalists picking it up to write a story, or submit the press release directly to local newspapers or magazines.

Consider publishing to platforms outside the mainstream ones such as GooglePlay. Other such publishing platforms include: SlideME, GameJolt, and NewGrounds. Video Reviewers are also a good idea to help create buzz. ArcadeGo is one such promoter, but countless others can be found by searching for ‘gameplay videos’ and following the game reviewers back to their account pages where you may find and contact them by email requesting a review.

Free App Reviews websites are another way to get seen. Submit your app to all the app reviewers you can find and a good number of them should accept your game or app if it’s of high quality. App reviewers include: The Great Apps, Indie Game Dev, AppsZoom, AppBrain, AppZoom, Indie Game Hunt, and Super Game Droid.

If all this sounds like a lot of work, that’s because it is. Finishing your app or game is only half the battle. The other half is finding an interested audience. Putting in the work and reaching out to these reviewers, forums, and your local community; however, will help ensure you get more attention than doing nothing.

Fiji Travel Guide: Restaurants

Fiji restaurants usually serve continental cuisine as many chefs that work in these places come from Australia and New Zealand. Resorts and hotels generally have themed menu focusing on certain cuisine on a certain night.

There are a number of restaurants in island resorts, hotels, and coffee shops that serve Japanese, Chinese, and Indian cuisines. Most restaurants offer steaks and seafood while there are also those that serve a wide array of Fijian food.

Chefs The Restaurant

The specialty of the house include the pakapaka, charcoal-grilled king prawns, rack of lamb, and grilled beef tenderloin. Established by chef Eugene Gomes, the place is considered as one of Fiji’s leading restaurants because of its attentive service and well presented-cuisine. The food may vary each season except for the rack of lamb and grilled beef tenderloin, which are a hit to Australian and New Zealand customers. It also serves breakfast while lunch offers fish and chips, burgers, and salads.

Bullacino

Opened in 2007, it is known for its rich coffee and freshly baked pastries. Its lunch menu includes roasted chicken and mesclun greens salad. Customers are impressed with its vegetarian ratatouille, yellowfin tuna, and grilled swordfish. The place is air-conditioned and has ceiling fans giving customers comfort while overlooking the Nadi River.

Coconut Grove Restaurant

This oceanfront restaurant allows guests to dine in their own private verandah or by the beach on candlelight. The place is set on a spot overlooking the ocean where in some nights people come to play their ukuleles and perform some local songs. People come and try their fish and seafood, organic vegetables, and homemade pastas. It also serves curries and Fijian food and it is a great place to try New Zealand’s finest beef.

Indigo

Started by chef Eugene Gomes, this restaurant offers outdoor dining experience. It serves authentic Indian menu including mangrove crab masala, Goan pork curry, and buttered chicken. It also features Asian dishes such as Thai crab and Rendang curry as well as a list of vegetarian dishes.

Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant

Opened in late 2007, this place is set in a small wooden cottage and serves traditional cuisine such as kokoda and kovu walu. It serves miti, crunchy shoots from a wood fern, which tastes good when served with coconut milk. A nice place to try a few Fijian dishes, where they are spiced to accommodate varied tastes and it is also a good dining spot to get some good curry.

Fiji restaurants are great places to take a break, recharge, and try the country’s exotic food after a long day shopping and exploring the islands.

Want Long Life, Prosperity And Honor?

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO LIFE? Most people would have to admit if pressed, that divining the mystery of life and discovering what they were here for, would be the most prized (and elusive) thing, simply because it seems unattainable. I recall a television program called “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and the answer to the “Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything” was simply 42-of course, then they had to find out what the “Ultimate Question” was!! Nothing’s ever easy when trying to work out the meaning of life.

Ask most people and there will be varied responses for the meaning of life-what we’re actually “here” for. Some will say, ‘to have a good time’, others might say, ‘to live and learn’, and still others, ‘to make money and enjoy spending it’. Ask me, and my answer is relatively clear: “I’m here to grow in wisdom.” I want to grow in my seven virtues: live the way of diligence and prudence; seek to create and sustain shalom and balance; live in a way that nurtures trust and upholds respect, and finally, settle for nothing less than wisdom.

Wisdom: There’s no goal quite like it. The ancients held her up as the jewel of the crown of life-she is to be esteemed beyond any earthly treasure. Why is it there are so many over the course of time in history who’ve fallen in love with her? Let’s explore.

The main point here is the “effect” of wisdom. What does wisdom really achieve for us? Because I have found wisdom of intense interest, I commenced my search some time ago. A bit like happiness, wisdom appears relatively elusive, but there are rewards for those who search for her.

Amongst the research I have done, I’ve found that wisdom provides three salient things in abundance-as a general rule. Test this out. See if it applies in the lives of whom you see as wise. First, wisdom promises long life. This is longevity of life, and it is also quality of life through the years. Have you ever noticed how some people age quite quickly and by the time they enter their sixties or seventies they’re a spent force, while others push through these barriers seemingly at ease and are spritely at 90? The latter people are probably the ones who lived wisely, looking after their bodies and minds, achieving balance in life, living diligently and prudently, not foolishly. They lived at peace with their peers and weren’t swallowed up by worry and cancer from the so-called stresses of living and dysfunctional relationships all around them.

Secondly, wisdom promises prosperity. This is shalom, the Jewish Hebrew word. It is everything truly good for us; wellbeing, wholeness, wealth (the right kind of wealth from the right way of living), peace, wellness, and an absence of agitation and discord. It is the feeling that you’ve cracked the code of life: you’ve achieved what you’ve been sent to do. Mission accomplished… that sort of thing. How many people actually sit back at 70, reflecting in their lives, and say “My whole life I’ve felt like that”? Not many I would suggest; yet, that’s exactly what our goal should be-to have not wasted our lives by simply living, but to make it count in some way, by working on leaving a legacy, having a purpose. It’s about seeking the right things in life. The effect is prosperity. It’s about teaching your children those same right things and guiding them day by day, and seeing them ‘crack the code’. What better outcome could there be than this sort of prosperity?

The third and final promise of wisdom is honor! I love something I read recently, again from theologian, Paul Koptak, “Nothing earns honor more than working for goals higher than praise.” We all seek praise and honor in life. Yet, Wisdom turns this on its head and simply says, Forget about seeking honor itself and seek ME first and I will give you the honor at the right time-what’s more, I will give it in ways and in amounts that you will feel completely grateful for-but don’t work for honor alone. Work to attain ME instead.

Nothing satisfies quite like a good name-a good reputation. Don’t work for praise and honor alone, just do the right, just, and fair things and honorable things will come to you by themselves. Forget about competing with and comparing with others. Focus on doing the right thing.

Of course, to attain wisdom really means to attain God-to be at peace with him. As God is love, so God is wisdom.

Seek wisdom; get wisdom; clamber for it, search for it, and never give up. You will never regret it as you achieve the true treasure of life: long life, prosperity, and honor. Not only will you achieve the treasure, you will also come much closer to knowing with faithful certainty, the true meaning of life.

Finding The Right Card Printer Is Not A Mystery!

Card printers have definitely come to stay in the corporate world. They are really popular office gadgets that play a very important role not only in large international corporations but also in medium sized companies, small business organizations, retail stores, hospitals, clubs, libraries and education facilities.

There is a wide variety of card printer models available in the market and it can seem quite an impossible task for the untrained individual to choose which type is the most appropriate for each business organization. However, the truth is that finding the right card printing instrument is not a mystery. The key lies in knowing what are the business organization´s needs and expectations, which uses it plans to give to the device and what it expects of its ID badges.

Needless to say, card printers are tailored suit to print identification cards. But business owners and managers can use them to produce plain name badges that keep their employees properly identified and clearly distinguished from visitors, guests and strangers; more sophisticated ID badges that are more difficult to copy or forge; access control cards so that each staff member can be given a specific clearance level so that only authorized staff members have access to otherwise restricted areas; and to provide its customers and guests with loyalty cards, gift cards or discount cards to enhance the brand awareness and increase the sales rates.

Therefore, one of the first things that any business owner or manager interested in adding a card printer to its office devices should think about is which kind of ID card he is looking for as every different model will allow it to produce a different kind of badge. The more sophisticated the card is, the more complex and expensive the printing instrument will be too.

Once this aspect is clear, the business owner or manager should take some time to evaluate the aesthetic aspects he wants the cards to have. Plain name badges can be monochrome and printed on only one side of the card, but more complex ID cards that include the employee´s picture or the business organization´s logo look definitely much better in full color. In addition, if a lot of information will be incorporated to the card, then a double sided card printer would be much useful.

It is also important not to forget about which safety features need to be added to the ID card so that it cannot be copied, forged or tampered. There are multiple options available in the market and even the simplest card printer models come with attractive in built security alternatives that are ready to use.

What Causes Prostate Cancer and What Can You Do About It?

Do you know what causes prostate cancer? Even more important, is there anything you can do to avoid it? The truth is that the cause is still unknown. There are certain risk factors that make it more likely. New research is also looking at our personal environment–where we work and live. Right now, your diet is the most important thing you can change to improve your odds. Let’s take a closer look at current thinking on what causes this type of cancer.

In this day of research and knowledge, it is hard to accept that the cause of this type of cancer remains unknown. In fact, all we really understand is the different risk factors that make cancer more likely. Age is a significant risk factor. As men age, they become more likely to develop prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is more likely in some ethnic groups. Heredity is another strong risk factor – if your family has a history of cancer prostate, you are more likely to develop it as well.

The latest research into what causes this type of cancer is taking a closer look at environmental factors. The idea is that prostate cancer may be linked to things that you encounter where you live or work. For example, farmers who are exposed to chemicals in fertilizers and pesticides seem to be more likely to develop prostate cancer. Miners are also exposed to various chemicals and substances that increase their risk for cancer.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do about your age, race or heritage. And you may have limited choices when it comes to the work you do or the area in which you live. Is there anything you can actually do to lower your risk of prostate cancer? As it turns out, making changes to your diet can improve your chances of staying prostate cancer free. Foods you should avoid or reduce include red meat, dairy products and any processed foods. What should you eat instead? Fruits, vegetables and any foods with antioxidants are excellent choices.

It is a problem that medical research will one day discover what causes this type of cancer. However, the answer remains a mystery for now. Being older and having a family history puts you at greater risk. Working in farming or mining is also a factor. But you can make a difference by making modifications to your daily diet. That should help you stay healthy until we have a better idea about what causes prostate cancer.

How to Branch Your Business

If you’re thinking of growing your business (or increasing its revenue), focus on your business structure first. I’m not referring to your internal business organization (e.g., marketing, sales, administration, development, customer service, etc.) – I’m referring to your external business conversations.

Businesses converse with (at most) five different target groups, each of whom have different needs:

  • customers (people who give you money in exchange for your offering)
  • investors (people who give you money in exchange for ownership)
  • the public (teaching people about your offering – but not with the primary goal of turning them into customers – perhaps to share information to make their lives better)
  • advocates (try to affect rules and regulations in society)
  • prospective employees (are people who want to give you their time and knowledge in exchange for a salary)

You need to market your company to each of these groups differently, because each group has different needs/concerns.

  • customers want to know why they should buy from you. What specific problems do they have that you can solve?
  • investors (or donors, for non-profit businesses) want to know how their money will help your business and how will they benefit.
  • the public want to know why they should trust your information and how it will make their lives better.
  • advocates want to know what in society should change, why, and who will benefit (and who won’t).
  • prospective employeeswant to know that your business is healthy, their contributions will be valued, and that your company values are in alignment with their personal values.

Before trying to grow your business, make sure you send the right message, to the right group of people, at the right time.
