American 60’s "Muscle Cars" – Shelby Equals Cobra

Just mention the car racer’s name “Carroll Shelby” and the one word “Cobra” to any automobile enthusiast and you will get a smile. It’s as anyone who knows anything about cars and automobiles knows that “Shelby equals Cobra”. Carroll Shelby however has two other claims to automobile fame – being the “Tiger” and the Shelby GT350 as well as Shelby GT500 classic muscle car models. It can be held that the Shelbies are “the Muscle Cars” of the 1960’s.

The story really began with the A.C. Car Company’s AC Ace and Aceca models. These were small beautifully proportioned sport cars, the Ace being an open model, and the Aceca the closed coupe version. In the beginning they were powered by the company’s own 1926 designed six cylinder engine with overhead camshafts. It was not long before the demands of racing saw the AC engine replaced as an optional extra by the 105 barrel horsepower straight six cylinder unit. The AC was produced in small quantities in the famed Thames Ditton works , and at no time did anyone have any idea that this pleasant little car would become a fire breathing Muscle Car for the American market, and as well go on to form the basis for a world championship GT auto machine.

At that time the AC were quietly building the Ace and Aceca models, a Texan racing driver named Carroll Shelby was knocking on the doors of Detroit’s then “Big Three”, trying to get them to listen to his ideas about making an American super-fast automobile that could serve its owner as a street car Monday -Friday, then with very little work allow him to go racing on the weekend. Carroll’s ideas ran to a European or Japanese-made chassis equipped with an American small-block V-8 engine and transmission.

It seemed that the mighty General Motors were only interested in their own Corvette, which took up all of their development time and money, so they were not interested in listening to Shelby. Chrysler was not interested “sporty “cars at the time. In fact they were having enough trouble selling their own cars and other products at the time to be bothered with any new automotive products or any new car model or automotive lines specifications. Ford it seemed was vaguely stimulated but needed to be “sold” on the idea. Shelby had heard about the new Ford V-8 motor, the 221C! Small block motor, and saw in it the way to really get the ear and attention of the Ford Motor Company. Shelby pulled off the deal by what might be called “one of the oldest tricks in the book”. He told AC that he could interest Ford by using their chassis and he told Ford that he could interest their AC in using their V-8 engine. Most importantly he told both these tales at the same time. Both Ford and AC liked the sound of this idea.

AC next delivered to Shelby’s workshop an engineless AC Ace. In only eight hours Shelby and his fine crew had installed the Ford V-8 into it. It did run, but it was more than obvious to the sports car aficionados that there was more than a fair share of work to be done before it was a finished product ready to be shown to both principles and the auto shows and race tracks as well. Using the expertise and input of an experienced California based British racing /test driver effort and expertise were expounded on the project until the point that a polished product was coaxed along.

Finally the question is asked – where did the name “Cobra” comes from. Legend has it that Shelby Carroll kept a notepad at ready by his bedstead. Legend is that one morning Mr. Carroll awoke after a most deep and productive slumber with this mythical name on his lips ready to be written down on that very notepad. Whether this origin of the dream name of the classic American muscle car is true, or the automotive product name came as a result of years of expertise in the automotive and automotive racing community and marketing “brainstorming” is not clearly known. However what is more than true is that the Muscle Car trade name “Cobra” fit the image, speed and power of the car implying sleek acceleration , deadly acceleration, speed and more than outstanding good looks.

Mechanical Equilibrium

Mechanical Equilibrium is a very important factor in physics and our everyday life. Newton’s First Law states that ” Mechanical equilibrium is just a different look at this law.

Mechanical Equilibrium is achieved when the net force of something is equal to zero. With the net force being zero, this allows the object to be balanced evenly and stop motion thus having no change. If the object were to be put off balanced and no longer equal zero, it would no longer maintain mechanical equilibrium and the object would continue on in which ever direction the larger force was coming from. Mechanical Equilibrium also leads to the overall equilibrium rule. The Equilibrium Rule is EF = 0.

The Equilibrium rule shows how an object or group of objects can be at rest and have their forces equal zero. In our everyday life, most of the things we do consist of maintaining mechanical equilibrium. For example, placing a backpack on a table. The force of the backpack is a combination of gravity and the weight of the backpack, In order for the backpack to stay in balanced equilibrium, there has to be another force to even out the force of the backpack. An upward force against gravity is being exerted from the table to balance out and maintain a balanced equilibrium of zero.

There are multiple types of equilibrium. Static Equilibrium is when the state of an object is at rest. Dynamic Equilibrium is when an object is steadily heading in one direction in a straight line.When in static equilibrium, all acting forces will balance to zero. This means that the object is not moving, speeding up, slowing down, or changing it’s direction. When in dynamic equilibrium, all acting forces also balance to zero. However it is at a constant motion and does not change that constant motion. For example, a ball rolling in a straight line will continue to maintain a dynamic equilibrium until it is opposed by an outside force like a wall or being picked up by someone. If you set a ball down and it stays a rest and does not roll, it is in a state of static equilibrium since the net force of the ball is at zero.

Mechanical Equilibrium and the different types of equilibrium is one of the basics of physics and is shown throughout our everyday lives. It correlates with Newton’s First Law and the Law of Inertia which states that

Medicare Supplement Plans – How They Work

Medicare Supplement plans are plans that are designed to fill in the “gaps” in “original” Medicare. “Original” Medicare includes Medicare Part A (hospital inpatient) and Part B (outpatient/doctor). Today, we are truly a international economy. Through the Internet, we can connect with and do business with anyone in the world. This makes it a level playing field when it comes to income, especially for someone with a disability. Therefore, when someone has issues with using a computer and technology, they are being left behind when it comes to the ability to earn an income.

There are opportunities for employment, but not the old traditional ones the older generation is used to that’s the real reason for high unemployment. Until the government addresses these issues, or until the older generations leave the workforce for good, there will be no change in the employment problem.

People with disabilities find it easier to adapt to the new workplace because they find it easier to incorporate technology into their lifestyle.

Do Men Still Objectify Women? Don’t Call Me Babe

“You’ve come a long way, baby…” the television ad would say. Back in the 70’s, women were told we could have it all, do it all, be it all. We were told that we could climb the corporate ladder, be a mother, have a successful marriage and earn dollar for dollar as much as a man could. We now had “women’s rights.”

Along with those rights came the Pill. Sexual freedom. Now we could have sex without as much fear of pregnancy. Indeed, we were equal to men. Right? Or did we just make it easier for them to get laid without putting out any effort?

Along with those rights, we learned phrases like “Male Chauvinist Pig” and set out to educate men that they could no longer objectify us as women. Singer Helen Reddy belted out “I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar.”

We stopped letting men open our doors, pay for our drinks and dinner and insisted we could bring home the bacon AND fry it up in the pan. Along with being “equal” we insisted that men look at us NOT as women…but as equals. But are we equals, really? And how equal do we want to be? Personally, I am not interested in being one of the boys. I like being a female. I like being feminine. I like when a man is a real man.

Biologically, we are not the same as men. Men are still snipes and snails and puppy dog’s tails, trucks, guns and testosterone, and women are still sugar, spice, everything nice, lip liner and lunch with the girls. Thank God we are not the same. I believe in women’s rights and I also believe women have a right to be treated with basic human consideration and respect. Men deserve respect too, but personally I can’t respect a man who does not respect me. Is it any wonder why so many women complain to me and each other they don’t feel respected by men?

How far have we really come since the ’70’s? Let’s see….

Women still earn less than a man doing the same amount of work. We now work outside the home, come home exhausted and work inside the home taking care of kids and hubby. If a husband and wife divorce, her lifestyle decreases by 45% and his increases by 15%.

The men of the “future”, i.e. TODAY were supposed to be caring guys who were products of “an enlightened era” sensitized to our plight as women. Men who, although no longer opened our doors, paid our way, respected us as women, revered us as mothers and wives and girlfriends were still expected to NOT OBJECTIFY AND DISRESPECT US.

Well, guess what? Many of the men who are supposed to be products of the moms and dads of the 70’s…the so called “enlightened men” are still objectifying women.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I get a text or an email from a guy I do not know and have never met who calls me “babe.”

Following is a small example of the kinds of emails I get from total strangers:

“Hey, babe. Hit me up and let’s talk.” “Hey, sexy. Wanna talk, babe?” “Hey, babe. Let me know if you want to hook up. OK, babe?”

Hello? I have a name. And it is NOT BABE. I loved the movie but I am not a talking pig, or a famous baseball player or a multi sports female phenomenon (although I used to play some decent football and basketball).I don’t know you. We have not met. Please don’t think you can be THAT familiar with me. Let me say this to all the guys who call me “Babe”… “Hey, babe. When you can email me and have something to say that is a better ice breaker than ‘want to hook up with me and see what happens?’ then let me know. If you are so spoiled, lazy or too cheap to spring for a cup of coffee or have so few social skills that you think I am going to fall all over myself getting back to you based on your one sentence courtship of me, you have another thing coming. If you think ‘want to chat?’ is your best A game, move on.

I am not playing in that game with you. I am NOT low hanging fruit. I am a confident woman with a lot to give someone, and I don’t just mean sexually. I am not an aging, desperate, stupid, gullible woman who mistakes objectification with respectful and genuine interest. I have been around enough to know when I am being disrespected. I am not desperate for sex, but I BET YOU ARE and that is why you are sending out 60 emails at a time to women hoping that playing the numbers game will pay off. I am not a set of tits. I am not a pair of legs. I am not YOUR hot babe.

I am a mature, well read, well educated, self respecting woman with high self esteem and high self regard who isn’t going to spend an ounce of my effort on ANY man who objectifies and talks to me like I am a ho for free. I have helped people die and been in the room when they passed on. I have been through hurricanes. I have perspective in life you won’t get for another 20-30 years IF THAT. I will not allow anyone to trivialize my existence by calling me ‘Babe’ and texting me a booty call when you and I have never even spoken on the phone, met face to face, or broken bread together…Let me repeat this so I am clear: I am not low hanging fruit for you to walk by, scoop up off the ground, use and discard.”

So, do men still objectify women? From what I am reading on the Internet in recent studies, yes. (April 1, 2009 LifeSiteNews.com) — Researchers in psychology at Stanford and Princeton universities have found that semi-nude images of women can cause men to view them as objects. A lead researcher in the project said, “What the brain scans show is that they are reacting to this photograph as people react to objects. It is as if they are not fully human.”

Why does this continue in 2009 with nearly 40 years of “equality” between men and women? Well, one reason is because women allow it. We let men get away with it. Maybe we don’t value ourselves, so why should we expect a man to value us? Maybe we overlook this familiar term because it’s not worth getting upset over. And maybe after the 1,000th time of hearing it, we get to a breaking point and finally decide to draw a line, because it signals the beginning of a downhill slide with a man. One reason is because with porn so readily available on the Internet, men look at 2 dimensional representations of women and sexualize what they see. They transfer this sexualization onto real 3 dimensional women and treat them accordingly. One reason is because while their moms were out climbing the corporate ladder, there was no one at home TEACHING these young boys how to respect women. One reason is due to divorce, dad no longer lives at home and maybe dad berates mom in front of the male child(ren).

If you think just cause you are young and hot and that’s enough, God bless you. If you don’t change that thinking, then you will grow into the very older man that we women are sick of meeting and dating.

How to Approach Math Word Problems on the Pharmacy Tech Exams

The Big Secret: Don’t think about the problem until you write down all of the factors.

Sounds too easy, right? But it’s where everyone gets stuck. Start by carefully reading over the entire question from start to finish and decode the important factors. Then, go back and slowly read it again, writing down only the necessary factors. Factors aren’t just numbers, but also things like days, percent signs, p.m., or whatever will help keep things straight for you. Also, neatly write numbers below or above numbers that will be added or subtracted and set-up any fractions.

Write an Equal sign where it belongs

This is critical; the equal sign is like a trigger to our brains that we’ve been taught since 3rd grade. Now that the problem is written in terms with an equal sign in place, the light will generally go on and you’ll start working the problem. From here, the only hang-ups you may encounter are things like not knowing conversions or needing to convert to all like factors. Even if you write down the factors wrong the first time, you’ll likely see how to re-arrange them and get started.

Sloppy writing is not allowed in math:

Your success at math is contingent on writing all of the factors neatly and organized. When you come across a math word problem, the first thought that should come into your head is to grab for a piece of paper to write it out. As you jot it down, write neatly and leave yourself some space between lines.Beware: Exam writers prey on your bad habits.

When I create practice math word problems for the free practice exams, I have to think up three dummy answers. How do I do it? It may sound sadistic, but I try to consider what answers would come up if someone was sloppy. I think about things like if a factor was left out, or if someone did the equation in a rush, or their head. Exam writers who write for official exams do the same thing. After all, the exams are used to weed out unqualified applicants. If you want to pass the exam, get in the practice of writing things down completely, neatly and organized.

When you get to a question that’s a math word problem.

First, relax and know that all of the facts are in there for you to solve it. Then take a deep breath and follow these steps: Don’t try to rush or use a short-cut

A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of second order. A quadratic equation has two roots. The roots can also be equal and identical. Let us write the quadratic equation in two forms

AX * X + BX + C = 0 an example of a quadratic equation would be 5X*X + 3 *X + 2 = 0

Let us rewrite the quadratic equation as ( X-R1) * (X-R2) = 0. The above step is termed as factoring.

Let us also rewrite the original generalized equation of the quadratic as X*X + B/A * X + C/A = 0

The factored equation can be rewritten as X * X -X( R1 + R2) + R1R2 = 0.

Comparing Similar terms we can see that -(R1 + R2) = B/A

R1R2 = C/A

(R1 + R2) = -B/A

Let us investigate B* B – 4 * A * C

B = -A ( r1 + r2)

C = AR1R2; 4*A*C = 4 * A* A* R1 * R2

B*B = A*A(R1 + R2) * (R1 + R2)

DISCRIMINANT = A*A(R1 + R2) * (R1 + R2) – 4*A*A*R1*R2

= A*A ( (R1+R2)((R1+R2) – 4R1R2)

= A*A ( R1 – R2) * (R1 – R2).

Notice that this is a perfect square of A(R1-R2). So if the discrimant becomes negative it means that the quadratic equation does not have real roots as squares of real numbers are also perfect squares.

Let us add A( R1-R2) to -B which is A( R1 + R2), and the sum is 2AR1. Dividing this by 2A would yield R1.

Similarly let us subtract A( R1-R2) from -B ie., A( R1 + R2) – A (R1-R2)

which is equal to A(2R2) or 2AR2. Dividing this by 2A would yield R2.

So R1 is (-B + squareroot( discriminant) ) / 2A and R2 is (-B – squareoot( discriminant) / 2A

Let us take some common factoring problems that you would encounter

say x * x + 5*x + 6 = 0.

First step evaluate the discriminant which is equal to the SQUAREROOT(25 – 24) = 1, which means that there are real roots.

The roots of the equation are (- 5 + 1)/ 2 is equal to -2 and ( -5 -1)/2 equal to -3.

The equation can be factored as (X+2)(X+3) = 0.

Let us take another example

3 * x * x + 9 * x + 6 = 0, rewriting this as x * x + 3*x + 2 = 0.

discriminant = sqrt(9-8) = 1

R1 = -1 and R2 is -2. So the factored form of the same equation is

(x + 1)( x+ 2) = 0.

A quadratic equation can also be plotted on a graph. When plotted it will yield the equation of a parabola.
