Cuisinart Grind & Brew Coffeepot Won’t Grind?

Cuisinart offers highly innovative grind & brew coffeepots. Their coffee machines are considered the best by many consumers which is why they are selling machines like lemonades. But then, these machines can be prone to machine failures too.

One common problem is a grinder that won’t work. The grinder usually works seamless and then suddenly it has stopped functioning. What to do?

If you have not been cleaning your grinder properly, this can be the cause of the problem. Washing it just will not cut it. Some of the essential oils and coffee grounds can be left behind and they will harden up after some time. Not only that, they tend to go rancid so it messes up with the real taste of the coffee grounds.

What you can do is to try to find out if there really is something stuck. Usually, you can find the problem in the space between the grinder basket and the filter basket. If some coffee grounds are there, clean it.

Mix clean water with vinegar and dip a clean towel in it. Use it to clean that area. It will help dissolve the sediments and the coffee essential oils that have clung to the slot. If this is already clean, move on to the grinder motor.

Usually, Cuisinart provides a cleaning brush. Use this to clean the motor and remove any visible ground coffee that may have stuck there. Once you have cleaned this area already, it should work nicely again. Try grinding and it should work seamlessly.

Some people have trouble cleaning their coffee grinder because they cannot remove the grinder basket. It seems to be stuck in the machine. There are quite a number of people who have experienced this problem. Using force to remove the basket can break the whole thing and you might end up with an even worse problem.

What you can do is to remove the filter basket first. This is usually located close to the basket grinder. This way, you can have better access to the grinder. The slot area I was talking about earlier can be pried loose using a screw driver. Slowly pry it loose using a jiggling motion so it can come off easily. Support the bottom of the grinder so it will not crack. Try to do this and it should come off easily.

Now that you have solved your Cuisinart Grind & Brew coffeepot problem, you should be able to enjoy a good coffee experience.

Is a Coffee Shop Profitable Business in Uganda?

What should be considered before investing in this sector?

Besides the infrastructural related challenges of investing in Uganda, such as frequent power cuts which could significantly affect your business, unless you invest in backup solutions, there are a few key PROS and CONS before investing in this sector.

PROS

As I highlighted in the article summary, the opportunity to invest in a coffee shop business in Uganda is driven by 3 key factors, and hence PROS:

1) The growing middle class in Uganda.

The middle class of any country is important for a “life style” kind of business like a coffee shop. In Uganda this class is growing. In 2010, it was estimated to be 32.6%, up from 28.7% in 2006. Assuming constant growth, I estimate it to be 36% in 2013.

The demand for this business is expected to continue to grow. This is consistent with trends in other countries, such as Brazil where the growth of the middle class resulted in coffee consumption to increase over 350% from 2004 to 2012.

2) Uganda is Africa’s 3rd largest producer of coffee.

About 6% of Uganda’ population relies on coffee directly for a livelihood and so as a result, not counting the indirect value chain including exporters and processors.

I believe that owing to our heavy reliance on coffee, where it is Uganda’s largest export, it should be possible to develop a coffee drinking culture, as is the case with Brazil, the world’s leading producer and also the 2nd largest consumer of coffee (after the USA).

3) Growth of internet usage

A significant part of the coffee shop culture is to give customers Free internet via WiFi.

This is now increasingly possible as internet access, and hence usage in Uganda has increased rapidly from only 2.5% in 2006 to 17% in 2012. The increase of telecom providers who offer internet data bundles has helped make internet access more affordable and so I believe this is a key factor in further developing this industry.

CONS

1. Public perception.

Coffee shops in Uganda have been typically associated as being a “Muzungu” (white person) thing. This perception can be easily countered through offering testing campaigns to say the coffee producing farmers. It is also changing with the population dynamics of Uganda. 78% of Uganda’s population is under 30. This generation has grown up watching TV and movies (including Hollywood movies). They are also more affluent than their parents and many have travelled the world.

I believe that therefore sufficient demand from Ugandans themselves and not just foreigners.

2. Seasonal business.

This is a seasonal business, first in respect of the dry and rainy seasons of Uganda and secondly during the various times of the day. In order to counter this, the investor needs to consider loyalty programmes that are heavily skewed to rewarding customers during down times, such as at lunch, or in hot weather.

3. Competition

I expect that in addition to the ever mushrooming independent coffee shops, there is potentially the threat of global franchises like Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Costa Coffee and the like entering the Uganda market and thus leading to the demise of the local or independent coffee shops.

The investor’s option is to either consider early on being a local franchise partner for these brands or focus on heavy differentiation to maintain customer loyalty.

How profitable is the sector?

From a model I have developed, I estimate that the Return on Investment (ROI) for a Coffee shop in Uganda is as follows:

  • Startup capital of Shs. 81 million (A)
  • Annual revenue of about Shs. 121.5 million (B)
  • Net profit of about Shs. 26 million per year (C)
  • Return on Investment (ROI) of 3.1 years. (D= A/C)

The basics to get right before investing

1. Organisation skills. The margins in this sector can be fairly tight and so you need to have excellent organisation skills. As a start you should consider formal barista training for your team. In addition, your bookkeeping should also be regularly done.

2. Marketing. Like many consumer products in the food industry, it is critical to get your marketing right to reward customers. The coffee industry generally follows the 80/20 rule which is that 80% of your business is going to come from 20% of your customers. This means the bulk of your customers are expected to be loyal and repeat customers. You should therefore invest in a customer loyalty scheme.

Final word

The coffee culture is exploding in Uganda. We expect that there will be an increase in the number of coffee shops, not counting the possibility of global franchises entering the market.

With such a competitive market, it’s important to rise above the competition. In order to set up a successful coffee shop, it’s crucial to have superb management skills.

Tea – Coffee – Rest – A Great Game For Your Music Lessons

You can easily brighten up your classroom Music Lesson with this simple game that children will ask for again and again! It’s easy to set up, you can do it successfully with no musical equipment at all and it teaches rhythm and musical confidence while everyone has fun! Add it to your lesson plans!

Preparation:

Arrange chairs in a big circle. Set aside one chair for yourself. If you have enough drums for the whole class, put one in front of each chair. The children will be using their hands to play the drums. You, the teacher, should ideally have a cowbell and a beater.

If you don’t have enough drums, you can alternate drums and other percussion instruments – such as tambourines, castanets etc – around the circle. You can get everyone to move around after each round of the game, so the instrument distribution will be fair. If you don’t have any instruments at all, just clap the rhythms!

Begin by demonstrating the main rhythm: crotchet, two quavers, crotchet (quarter note, two eighth notes, quarter note). The time signature is ¾.

Actually say “Tea, coffee, rest; tea, coffee, rest;” and get the whole class to repeat it several times. Then get them all to play the rhythm together on their instruments.

Next, substitute a “rest” for the third beat – in other words, the rhythm becomes crotchet, two quavers, crotchet rest (quarter note, two eighth notes, nothing). When they can all do this together, you’ll be ready to start the game. Explain that everyone has to abide by your rules and that your decisions will be final.

How to play Tea Coffee rest – training version

Get the children to put down their instruments for this version. Start quite slowly. Count aloud “one, two, three” and look straight at the child who is to start, to eliminate any doubt. You keep the pulse going with your cowbell.

The first child says “tea” on the first beat, the second child says “coffee” on the second beat and the third child says nothing at all. The fourth child says “tea” and so on. Insist that “coffee” is two even quavers (eighth notes) in strict rhythm. Keep going round the circle until everyone understands.

How to play Tea Coffee rest – real live version

The children take up their drums and percussion. Explain that this time they will be playing the same tea, coffee, rest rhythm on their instruments, one at a time. If anyone makes a mistake they will be “out” and will have to sit on the floor, leaving their instrument on the chair.

Count “one, two, three” as before and keep the pulse going with your cowbell (yes, even on the rests). The first child strikes his/her drum once on the first beat, the second child plays two quavers (eighth notes), the third does nothing, the fourth child plays once, the fifth plays two quavers (eighth notes), the sixth does nothing, and so on round the circle.

Whenever anyone makes a mistake they are “out”. They immediately put down their instrument (on the chair) and sit on the floor, without any argument! You restart with the same count-in, looking at the next child in the circle.

As the number of active players decreases, you can up the tempo. If you’re left with three (or six) good players who don’t make a mistake, just stop and restart (on a different child) quickly so that they are taken off guard. Or reverse the direction. When you’re down to two players, even you will be confused!

You can help the children by looking earnestly at each player when it’s their turn – or tease them by looking earnestly at another child so that they play at the wrong time.

Give the winner a Smartie or sticker or whatever currency they value, then get everyone to move around (by one chair) before sitting on the chairs again. Start again straight away and keep the pace up. Four rounds of the game are probably enough, even though the children would happily play it for hours. The next time you play you won’t have to do any explaining.

A note of caution: this game will make you seriously popular, but the downside is that children may tell their parents that they just play games in their music lessons. Be prepared to defend the activity and explain how it teaches children to count in time, to come in independently, to listen and fit in with others, to perform in a group and to recognise note values!

Thanks to Ros Shaw for telling me about this and many other great games.

15 Coffee Shops in San Francisco You Need to Visit Before You Die

Coffee shops are a dime-a-dozen in San Francisco.

Seriously, there are over 300 coffee shops throughout the City – that’s about 6 per square mile!

Why are there so many? SF is a global leader in the progressive, third-wave coffee movement – a movement that aims to produce high-quality coffee as an artisanal product, like craft beer or wine.

This is great news for us, as San Franciscans love their coffee. We narrowed down our list to the best, and then the best of the best to bring you this list of coffee shops you have to visit before you die.

Réveille Coffee/Cafe Réveille

Réveille Coffee began in 2010 when brothers Thomas and Christopher Newbury began selling coffee out of a repurposed delivery truck. Six years and four locations later, Réveille serving up some of San Francisco’s tastiest coffee and espresso drinks. After moving into Mission Bay just six weeks ago, Cafe Réveille is already generating tons of buzz on Yelp and social media. With bright colors combined with modest, artsy decor, Cafe Réveille is a great spot to grab coffee, breakfast/lunch or spend a little bit of time telecommuting. (Note: Cafe Réveille is also open for dinner and drinks every night.) All beans are roasted in-house, and their mocha is one of the most popular items on the menu. Réveille Coffee has other locations in Jackson Square, The Castro and North Beach.

Ritual Coffee Roasters

Ritual Coffee Roasters sparked a coffee renaissance in San Francisco after opening in 2005. Based out of The Mission, Ritual has expanded to include four locations including Bayview’s Flora Grubb Gardens and Napa’s Oxbow Public Market. Our favorite is the outpost at Hayes Valley’s PROXY – a modified shipping container that’s positively hipsteriffic. Get caffeinated with their delicious Gibraltar Coffee, San Francisco’s version of a Cortado, and head over to Chantal Guillon to pick up a sweet pairing.

Ritual Coffee at PROXY – 432b Octavia Street, San Francisco, CA

Philz Coffee

No listicle of San Francisco coffee shops would be complete without Philz Coffee. Scratch that. San Francisco wouldn’t be complete without Philz! Phil Jaber was the owner of a mini supermarket in The Mission District and wanted to leave behind a greater legacy for his son, Jacob. In his quest to create the perfect coffee, it took seven years to get his first coffee blend, Tesoro, just right. Philz is a San Francisco staple with 14 locations in the City and 15 others throughout the Bay Area. (Philz has also expanded to Los Angeles, and he has his eyes set on Washington, DC – we’d say he’s going to leave behind a great legacy.) This shop specializes in pour-over coffee.

Fog Lifter Cafe – 1901 Ocean Avenue, San Francisco, CA

Trouble Coffee Company

Trouble Coffee Co. is the little coffee shop that could. With its original location based out of a tiny shop in the far reaches of the Outer Sunset, Trouble Coffee sparked San Francisco’s artisanal toast craze with $4.00 cinnamon-sugar toast on thick bread. (Hey, the name just started to make sense to us – because you’ll be in trouble with their bread – calorie-wise, and possibly financially, too.) Founded by Giulietta Carrelli, Trouble has expanded its little coffeehouse’s (and coconut club) reach with two new locations in Bayview and Oakland – along with its toast offerings.

Trouble Coffee Co. & Coconut Club – 4033 Judah Street, San Francisco, CA

Saint Frank Coffee

This hipster-chic cafe is located on upper Polk Street in Russian Hill. With soaring ceilings, abundant natural lighting, clean lines and minimalistic, white and oak interior, Saint Frank will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Copenhagen. As you might have guessed, Saint Frank is named after our beloved City. The menu is small, and the coffee is on the lighter side (in true Scandinavian form). Our favorite creation at Saint Frank is the Almond Macadamia Latte.

Saint Frank Coffee – 2340 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA

Stop Spilling Coffee

Do you know anybody who has never spilled a mug full of coffee on his or her clothes or technological gadgets? I am sure this is a situation that has happened to almost everybody and, sometimes, more than once! You, or the person you know, have probably had favorite clothes ruined and expensive gadgets destroyed. The more you drink coffee, the more likely you are to spilling a coffee mug, no matter how careful you are. There will be a moment when you are completely distracted multitasking and the coffee mug will be sitting right in the place between your laptop and those very important documents – a recipe for disaster!

Suffer no more! There is a product already in the market that can save you from those embarrassing moments. It is costless compared to how much you would spend for having coffee spilled over you laptop, phone, or tablet. It is costless compared to how much time you would lose trying to get rid of coffee stains. It is costless compared to all the trouble you would have for having lost those important documents. The product I have been taking everywhere I go since I bought it, it is, of course, a coffee mug!

However, this is a special type of mug. For starters, it is called the Mighty Mug and its slogan says “The mug that won’t fall over”. It is a thermal, cylindrical mug that comes in all different types of sizes and colors. The mug’s magic is related to its suction cup located on the bottom of the mug. The suction cup adheres to smooth surfaces and will only release itself from the surface if you grab it from the mug’s upper part. Once it is stuck to the surface of your office table, it will resist to the most violent arm and hand hits without causing a mess. In addition, if you are not into coffee or want a more sportive looking product, the mug’s manufacturer offers similar products for other types of drinks. This is a product that can also appeal to college students. Waking up early for classes can leave any person a little more clumsy than usual. Using this type of mug might save your from spilling coffee over your class assignments and might avoid that your receive a bad grade. There is, however, one drawback. The mug does not maintain the coffee hot for a long period. One average, you can expect to have a hot beverage between one, one and a half hour.

Your coworker’s birthday is coming up? The Secret Santa party has already been drawn? Think no more! This can be the ultimate, most surprising gift you can give anyone. I can guarantee that everyone will try to hit this mug at least once to prove its power and will be amazed to see that it works! Last but not least, the mug is also dishwasher safe. Therefore, you can use it as much as you want during the day and put it into your washing machine if you do not feel like doing the dishes.

French Coffee Press – How Best We Can Make Use of It

Coffee connoisseurs praise the special fine quality that manual French Press delivers to consumers. This custom coffee maker is designed and known to produce the finest of coffee flavors. It has the capacity to put together more of the coffee’s flavor & essential oils – so that every cup sipped is packed with full of benefits in its highest form.

To make your delicious home brewed coffee, tea, almond milk, frothed milk, fresh juices etc. with a French Press the following steps need to be followed

BOIL WATER

You have to first boil the water in the kettle.

After boiling, allow it to sit for 1-3 minutes.

  • Now add the coffee grounds into the French Coffee Press.
  • Go on and add some of the hot water (say about 1/3 quantity) – to help infuse the grounds. Your timer should be on now for proper timing. Begin to blend the coffee grounds together with the poured water evenly. This should be done in 5 seconds. Now cover the French Press and allow it to sit for 30 seconds more.
  • You can now add the remaining volume of hot water, and keep stirring gently. Now raise the plunger & allow 3 minutes.
  • Now push the plunger down.

Remember that coffee is always best served fresh hot or warm. At this stage, you can now pour the brewed coffee into your serving coffee cup. Put some cream & sugar as may be desired and then go on to enjoy your freshly brewed French Press homemade coffee.

In case you won’t be serving all of the coffee immediately, you should transfer the rest into a separate serving jug to avoid further brewing or bitterness.

With the aforementioned steps – please note that you can still apply some flexibility. Studies have been carried out on several techniques to provide a good starting point, and what any coffee lover should anticipate if they wander well outside of the regular proportions. With that said, everyone has their individual preferences when it has to do with brewing coffee that fit-in to each person’s taste.

To explore several results, you can experiment on your own, and utilize the trial & error system – till you can generate your desired coffee brew on a constant basis. Simply learn to alter some variable at a time and watch how it plays out.

Lastly – please remember to ensure your 8 Cup French Coffee Press is well cleaned before starting the brewing process. This is because any form of old coffee grounds stuck within the filter might spoil your coffee with a really bitter flavor.

In most of the cases, we take coffee as a stimulant beverage, but we are never eager to learn about its other benefits. The stimulating ingredient in the coffee is caffeine, and other than caffeine, many other elements in the coffee are useful to the human body. Such elements include potassium, magnesium and other minerals that boost weight loss indirectly.

Some of the benefits of coffee include the following:

  • “Cancer.” the name itself is scary. Isn’t it? But, researchers have proven that it reduces the risk of getting into the clutches of this fatal disease. According to these researches conducted in different countries of the world, it has been highlighted that the beverage contains a very high percentage of antioxidants that makes its intake safe. They claim that it reduces the risk of developing specific types of cancerous illnesses like prostate cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and skin cancer. The anti-oxidants do protect your body too by fighting free radicals in the body which might be harmful.
  • It also acts as a stimulant mood booster. The caffeine is probably the most important element in the coffee as it enhances the level of adrenaline in the body, offers you energy and make you more alert and focused. These functions are add-ons that highlight the positive effects of caffeine in the human body.
  • It also lowers the risk of acquiring diabetes. Caffeine impairs glucose tolerance by decreasing the sensitivity of insulin in your body in case insulin is not at the recommended levels. Researchers also published some findings in The American Journal of Epidemiology on how coffee lovers are less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases. The people who were used to carry out most coffee researches were given an average of four cups of coffee per day with a reduced amount of milk. They also concluded that more the amount of coffee, the greater are the benefits. In fact, the consumption of black coffee is recommended for deriving maximum results.

Coffee as a Weight Loss Ingredient

Coffee is also an important beverage for weight loss. It contains polyphenols that contribute to outgrow a certain species of bacteria called bacteroidetes in the body which is found in the gut. This bacteria is associated with thinness. The researchers say that you can only increase this type of bacteria by feeding it and not in any other way. Coffee is responsible for feeding this bacteria. Therefore, more coffee means more bacteroidetes and eventually a slimmer body.

Magnesium and potassium in coffee regulate the level of blood sugar in the body by allowing it to make use of insulin and reduce your craving for sugary snacks responsible for causing weight gain.

Caffeine is vital in increasing our resting metabolism rate. It means that it will increase the speed of metabolism that takes place even when you are resting, and your body will always be burning fat due to the increased metabolism. You, therefore, don’t have to worry too much as you can still eat well without gaining weight. The caffeine effect of stimulating your body and making it more active helps in burning down of fat to release energy to the blood.

Coffee fat loss demands time and commitment and it is recommended to incorporate workout in your daily routine for generating faster results. A little exercise does no harm, but help you stay energetic throughout the day.
