Many speakers want to leave a lasting impression in the minds of their audience and that is what many refer to as the wow factor. There is no singular act that causes you the speaker to bond fast with the members of every audience since each case has to be evaluated based on its peculiarities. It is common with speakers to stage a singular act, which spices up the presentation and makes it an unforgettable moment that leaves the audience wanting more and more. Now, the next question would be how to add some spice to your presentation so that it goes from being drab to super.
Here are a few tips that might help you in your quest to be the super speaker you want to be. All of these are from personal experience and the experiences of other professional speakers.
Humour – I would like to start by saying that you can never go wrong with humour. A humorous speaker is a better option that a boring speaker any day, this is so especially when the presentation on its own is one that has the innate tendency of being serious, a good example is a technical paper at conference. The bottom line is that the infusion of humour in your presentations is a good habit that you may want to practice with to make you the speaker of choice. You owe yourself a duty to recognise the style of humour that best fits you and to hone your skills to make the overall package a better one. The advice here would be to make sure they understand you are not a stand up comedian hence the need not to overdo things.
Reservoir of knowledge – A sure way to make your presentation one to remember is to enhance greatly the content and to make sure that you do a good job of informing your audience. The simple logic is this: the more you tell people what they do not know and probably what they did not view from a certain hitherto unknown perspective, the higher you will rank on the scale of performance. When you quote other sources and statistics and generally tell people, what they do now know, you unconsciously pass yourself off as being knowledgeable and that increases your believability level. I have personally seen this work for many speakers most of whom had no huge amounts of personal charisma and charm working in their favour. You must be a reservoir of knowledge as that is one sure way to earn the respect of your audience.
Delivery – The golden rule here is that it is not what you say but how you say it, which is just as important. Remember what you are not saying but which others can perceive is just as important if not more important than the actual thing you are saying. Here you should employ positive body language, modulate your voice and maintain a good posture.
