Here is a simple tip for the beginner pianist who wants to learn to transpose music. This will help you easily memorize your notes, and learn your keys and chords more quickly! Let’s start off with a simple song like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
All you need to do when you are looking at your music, instead of reading it in the key of C, read it like it is written in the key of D. You just visualize the notes in the key of D, i.e., C=D, D=E, E=F#, F=G, G=A, A=B, B=C. Use this example for any key you want to change the song into. Just look at your music and think of what the notes look like in the higher or lower key just above the key it is written in. For example, the song is written in the key of C. I am going to write out the notes for you to show you how easy it is to transpose music.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
C C, G G A A G, F F E E D D C.
Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.
G G F F E E D, G G F F E E D.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
C C, G G A A G, F F E E D D C.
To transpose this song into the key of D, all you would do is play it in the next key up. So instead of the song starting in C, it would start in D.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
D D, A A B B A, G G F# F# E E D.
Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.
A A G G F# F# E A A G G F# F# E.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
D D, A A B B A, G G F# F# E E D.
To transpose the song down a key to the key of Bb, you would start the song in Bb instead of C.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
Bb Bb, F F G G F, Eb Eb D D C C Bb.
Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.
F F Eb Eb D D C, F F Eb Eb D D C.
Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.
Bb Bb, F F G G F, Eb Eb D D C C Bb.
This is just a simple way to learn how to transpose your music. The more you practice, the easier it will become, and soon you’ll be playing any song in any key you want!
