Learning to Read: Word By Word – Punch By Punch to Victory!

“Good things come to those who work every day of their lives and never quits.”-Kyle Winton

Look at how kids have done great efforts to learn reading. At first they have had difficulties in sounding out letters, then blending them so as to pronounce them correctly. Their efforts should be appreciated, that is, if teachers/parents want to give them a boost of confidence. Yes, there are always appreciative adults to a kid’s learning quest. Without adults to support them, they would never have a chance to enjoy learning the way it is. Much difficulty they would experience until they stop reading, then ignore the importance of reading into their lives, and eventually be ignorant of things around them later.

Like my challenged readers in class, I would always coax them to try, try and try until their reading becomes natural like that of the air they breathe. Yes, effort like this must be present to a child’s quest to learning to read, and other learning endeavors as well.

Since reading is basic to learning, the more they should master the skills in decoding, fluency and comprehension.

Sportsmen have trainings everyday so as to ensure victory in their competitions. They won’t relent in getting their skills at par with their competitors, even their confidence should be above their own limitations.

Like Manny Pacquiao, who did not make it to win against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in their “Fight of the Century.” boxing bout in Las Vegas.

Manny did his best though, just like his previous winning fights. However, there are always reasons why he lose but, such could not put him from pursuing his other dreams in life.

I always told my challenged readers then to go on, no matter what. Every punch to an unfamiliar word becomes a punch to victory the next day for they would surely recognize them in the next passage, poem or what. Yes, for every day is a new day getting closer to your goal-that is, to become readers –and, lead others, too in the future-in their quest to reading fluency and comprehension. I knew then that my desire would be attained through my constant prodding to them to read, and read and read.

It’s so hard, teacher! one of them would tell me. Yes, but you can make reading easy. I would say. How? One of them would ask. By reading everyday until they (difficult words) become friendly companions in your reading spree. I would tell them in a jest.

Giving up too early is a sign of cowardice. Efforts done should be considered before thinking of the wasted time and all, when the journey seems unbearable. Yes, pain and failure are parts of the process of getting desired results. And going every day, no matter what hardships encountered along the way, would definitely be a meaningful journey towards victory.

And today, several of them have already gained the skills–and the rest, still punching their way to mastery. Word by word.

Yes, till they can read this article of mine sooner than expected.
