During the High Renaissance, Michelangelo Buonarroti created paintings used a technique common at that time. This approach produced what we call frescos, and this particular artist was to become a true master of it. The reputation which the artist built up from an early stage in his career meant that he was to receive some of the most prestigious projects in Italy at that time, some of which were technically very challenging and required someone with considerable confidence and skill to complete them successfully.
Despite being best known as a sculptor, Michelangelo Buonarroti took on several large scale commissions for painting projects, most notably in the Sistine Chapel. This key religious landmark first housed his series of fresco paintings upon the ceiling before a later work added The Last Judgement is alongside it.
The Creation of Adam was a specific fresco which sat in the center of the ceiling display, and this has become the most famous work of all those placed here. Michelangelo required help in order to complete such an intimidating project, though he retained strong influences on all those who assisted him.
Michelangelo Buonarroti was an artist who chose religious topics for most of his paintings, with some Greek Mythology also commonly used. Famous scenes from Christian scripture were also a good source of inspiration for him, with powerful emotions involved, plus the opportunity to add his own imagination to proceedings.
Art print reproductions of Michelangelo’s original frescos have become very popular in recent years for those who are unable to be able to see said originals in person. The worldwide appeal of the artist ensures this is a common problem, whilst others who are lucky enough to see some of his paintings might also want a print of them as a memento.
Michelangelo himself had a long and distinguished career that produced a huge amount of high quality frescos, sculptures and drawings across many decades. To summarise his best paintings here is hard to do without leaving out other notable works and so we would highly recommend that you take the time to research other paintings that we have not covered here. That said, the Sistine Chapel remains the best place to go for a chance to see some of the best original work from the artist, and several renovations have ensured that it’s preservation up to the present day has been to a very high standard.
