Old School Tattoo Removal Methods

Today’s methods for removing tattoos are far more advanced compared to those of yesteryears. 10 and 15 years ago there were very few methods for removing tattoos, which means you only had a few options to choose from. Well, within the past 5 to 10 years we have made some very useful advances in this arena.

The new advances in tattoo removal technology have made removing a tattoo so much easier and less painful compared to what people used to have to go through. It is funny to think about but it is true that about 10 years ago cryosurgery, dermabrasion, and excision were the most popular and well known methods for tattoo removal.

Cryosurgery was a method that was not very comfortable at all. This process was very old school and required your skin to be frozen so that during the removal of ink, you couldn’t really feel any pain. Well, the problem with that is when your skin finally unfroze you felt lots of pain. Anyone who has ever had this done would probably not suggest it to anyone else regardless of the results.

Dermabrasion was the most commonly used method and is still used today by those who do not want to undergo laser removal. Dermabrasion is just that, abrasing the skin. This is aka from sanding down the skin to remove the top layers. You can imagine how painful this process could be if not done correctly. Back 10 ad 15 years ago, it was not. People were sanding there skin way too heavily causing things like bleeding, scarring, scabbing etc. This can be an effective method of tattoo removal but it has to be done over a period of time.

Excision is easily the dumbest and most painful way to remove a tattoo. Literally, some doctor would use a knife of some sort to cut our and remove the tattoo. That says enough right there but for informational purposes, there is more. After the tattoo was cut out, the doctor or his/her staff would stitch together the skin, which always every single time left a bad scar. If you were unlucky and dumb enough to use this method and had a large tattoo you probably ended up getting numerous skin grafts to close the open wound. Why not just live with the tattoo.

How ABA Therapy Readies Children For School

As many parents of autistic children know, children with autism spectrum disorders learn differently than other children. While a significant number of children with ASD are capable of learning and functioning well enough to keep up in public schools, many children need therapy to help them prepare for school. Many lessons, such as social skills, vocabulary and communication skills, and simple reasoning need to be taught before placing the child in a structured classroom environment in order for education to be successful.

For many children Applied Behavior Analysis therapy offers the answer. ABA therapy is a scientifically proven method of treating autism that can result in children functioning at their maximum potential, with many children reaching normal levels of functioning. While not a cure for autism spectrum disorders, the therapy can result in recovery from autism for many children. ABA therapy teaches children basic and necessary skills through the use of repeated commands and patterns designed to teach core principles and ideas. These repetitive tasks help to literally rewire the mechanisms inside the brain, effectively teaching children how to learn. Applied Behavior Analysis helps to prepare children for school by preparing them to learn and understand complex ideas and concepts. While many children learn from what they see occurring around them, autistic children must be taught basic ideas and principles in order to understand how they work. As ABA therapy is applied, children learn how to understand new concepts and begin to learn from their environment. Whether taught in a clinical environment or by a devoted and committed parent, ABA is a very successful preparation for helping autistic children succeed in school.

Applied Behavior Analysis also teaches children social skills by rewarding positive behavior and responses and ignoring inappropriate responses. This discourages self-injurious behavior as well as anti-social behavior and helps prepare children for life in classrooms, on buses, and in public. The skills developed through Applied Behavior Analysis therapy are lifelong and life altering. Many parents credit ABA therapy with enabling their child to enter and succeed in school. This method prepares children for the social interaction and learning environment they will encounter when entering a standard school and often helps them to develop fully enough that they become indistinguishable from other children in regards to their abilities. This therapy is by far the most recommended treatment for autism spectrum disorders and with the percentage of successful outcomes, there is little doubt as to the effectiveness of the therapy.

Back To School – Beware of Head Lice

It’s Back to School time! And that also means back to the possibility of head lice. Yuck!

Head lice happen when people gather in confined spaces. Schools are the perfect location for infestations and here we are at the beginning of a long school year! A few reasons head lice are bad in schools…

Reason #1: Children’s jackets and back packs are jammed together on little pegs or in piles giving lice a perfect path to new victims.

Reason #2: Younger students lounge on the floor or in bean bags during Story Time. These little monsters either crawl from head to head or lie in waiting for the next Story Time targets.

Reason #3: Older kids play sports and share head gear, helmets, and equipment. Yes, middle schools are now rife with head lice!

Reason #4: Selfies. Yes, Selfies – where kids put their heads together to snap a photo. It’s like a head lice superhighway! Seriously, teenagers are the fastest growing segment of the population with infestations because of Selfies.

Parents dread them and it’s no wonder. The amount of work involved in dealing with them and the sheer volume of laundry sends any sane parent to the verge of tears if they receive the call from school… “Your child has head lice.”

So, what do you do? Get some safe and effective products specifically used to treat head lice. For less than $10, you can treat your child and terminate all the adult bugs immediately. Place a shower cap on your child’s head for 4 hours to overnight and you’ve decimated the eggs or ‘nits’ so that they’ll never hatch and continue the nightmare. Simple, easy and effective.

So, who thought of the word ‘nits’ anyway? They are eggs but then again, they are more than your average egg. They are super sticky and are stuck on a hair shaft like cement glue. It used to be that all nits had to be combed out which is beyond a doubt, one of the most tedious, aggravating, irritating exercises in patience. Imagine, combing every single strand on an entire head. But not with all products! “HOORAY!” yelled all mothers collectively!

And as an added educational bonus, the term ‘nitpicking’, which is associated with irritating, aggravating, and overly critical behavior, stems directly from the wretched process of removing head lice nits from hair. Yes, combing nits out is the worst. Another “Hooray” from the chorus of parents since you don’t have to do that unless you opt for traditional pesticides.

If you fear head lice (or know there are some in your child’s classroom and don’t want to get them), apply a light spray of your safe and effective product on your child’s hair and belongings before school. It will keep these parasites at bay.

And keep you sane!

Choosing Schools for Children

Choosing the best school for your child is not only a personal but time consuming decision. Some parents are content with a public school and others would rather have their children in a private school. However, it is important to exhaust all possible options before arriving at a decision.

When choosing schools, it is essential to focus on your child’s characteristics. If you keep their personality, strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, and interests in mind you will be able to find the best possible school to fit their disposition. There are private schools that are geared towards children with special needs with typically developing peers in class. There are schools that guide parents on good home school routines for their children. There are also schools that follow unique teaching philosophies, for instance, there are schools that follow a Waldorf curriculum. This kind of curriculum focuses on the social development of students where creative expression and imagination are at the heart of learning. Students are not evaluated against a numerical grading system, but rather through qualitative assessment methods.

Aside from considering your child’s disposition, it is important to factor in the facilities of each school to ensure that it supports your child’s learning experience. Visit the school and check whether the school has a library, playgrounds, spacious classrooms and communal areas. A school that strives for a strong teacher, parent bond can make a huge difference in your child’s education. This is because you are much more likely to hear feedback on how your child is doing in a particular area, especially if your child is struggling.

Further, considering the teacher-student ratio of the school is crucial. Every child learns at different rates and with different techniques. Some children learn fast, while others need further guidance from their teachers in order for them to understand. When teacher-student ratios are small, your child is much less likely to be left behind and they will likely get the extra attention they need to succeed. When teachers handle a manageable number of students all at the same time, all of her students will remain on the same page whatever the current class discussion is.

When touring schools for your child it is wise to ask about the extracurricular activities available for students. Schools that offer after-school activities such as dance, music, sports, culinary, and photography clubs can enhance your child’s creativity. After school activities not only help your child find passion in particular subjects but it also helps with socializing.

If you are the kind of parent who wants to be involved with their child’s school activities, you can also ask the schools administrators about parent and family involvements that the school has. Schools that have a lot of opportunities for parental involvement such as parent teacher conferences and family days can make you appreciate the school even more.

Educating you child today is essential to their future; therefore it is best to look into every option for your child’s education.

When College is Threatened With Closure

Nowadays there are many colleges that are threatened with closure. The most important reason of this is that these places lack money. I hope you will take the following suggestions into consideration so as to avoid the closure of your favourite school.

Firstly, I suggest a small tuition fee for each student. Only students from poor or broken families could be excluded from having to pay it. Some more money could be raised by organising charity events like sales of home-made cakes and cookies as well as preparing Christmas and Easter cards and the sale of works of art by our most talented pupils. This would make the school more self-sufficient.

Secondly, there seems to be a solution to the problem of current repairs. Many of parents own firms which deal with household repairs so they could do the repair work for your school free of charge. The name of these sponsors would be mentioned in the School Chronicle and the school could save a substantial amount of money.

Thirdly, may I suggest that your school could rent out its sport facilities after school hours, like the gym, the fitness club and the playing-field. If your school is new one and still in good condition, it could become popular among your community members as a place to exercise their bodies and minds. In this way, the place would become a social meeting place for most of them. What is more, some of your classrooms could be rented to language schools to organise various language courses.

Finally, I think that it is a government’s duty to provide the school with enough money to assist. The future of our country depends on the education of today’s youth. Besides, young people ought to get education they are entitled to. In conclusion, it can be seen that there are a few ways for your school to avoid being closed, should my suggestions be acted upon. Not only could this institution serve educational purposes but it could also serve all the members of our community and be part of it.

High School Wrestling: Peaking for the End of the Season

During my senior season of high school wrestling, I “peaked” at precisely the right time. I was conference champion, sectional champion, and district champion. By winning the district tournament, I qualified for the state tournament. I was beaten in the first round 5-2 and never had the opportunity for a wrestle-back. Nonetheless, I had improved over the previous seasons. During my sophomore year, I placed 4th in the conference and placed 3rd at sectionals. During my junior year, I placed 2nd in the conference and placed 3rd at districts. I always ran out of steam and motivation toward the end of the season and never qualified for the state tournament. What was the change during my senior season?

First, I had much better control of my diet during my senior season. I counted calories and lost weight slowly. I never went a day without eating. I was never starved or dehydrated. I didn’t feel weak toward the end of the season. I just kept getting stronger. Therefore, my attitude was different as well. I was confident and I had a true desire to qualify for the state tournament. The two prior seasons I was feeling weak and just didn’t want it badly enough.

How can a wrestler peak for the end of the season? Let’s examine things a bit.

Periodization

Periodization simply involves planning your training for the season or even the entire year. The season is broken down into different phases. Tudor Bompa states, “Normally, a peak performance is planned to be reached during the competitive phase and cannot be maintained forever.” Similarly, Mark Ginther states, “Peak condition is impossible to retain for more than a couple of weeks at the longest.” Of course, you want to win every match. In addition, you want to be in excellent condition. However, you cannot be in top condition all season. Therefore, your coach probably will have you doing a higher volume of work early in the season. Toward the end of the season, you’ll probably do a lower volume of work but at a higher intensity. Your ultimate goal is to peak for the post-season tournaments like sectionals, districts, and state.

Conditioning

As I mentioned, your volume of work should go down when you want to peak toward the end of the season. However, your workouts may be more intense. Intensity and brevity is the key. Toward the end of the season, you may begin to think more about match strategy. You may begin to practice “situations” that could arise in a match. What will you do if you’re ahead by one point in the bottom position with only ten seconds left in the match? You should do a stand up most likely. You obviously don’t want to do a granby roll and try to pin your opponent. You need to be smart and hold on to that one point lead.

Technique

Drilling is important to peaking. If you drill your moves religiously during the season, they will become second nature. Winning those post-season competitions will be easier if your technique is flawless and comes naturally.

Recovery

Recovery encompasses many things. Make sure to get enough rest. Ideally, you should be getting eight to ten hours of sleep each night. Some wrestlers find that contrast showers (alternating hot and cold water) are helpful after practice. A hot bath before bed can be soothing and may help you sleep better. In addition, don’t forget about nutrition.

Intense wrestling and conditioning depletes muscle glycogen and breaks down muscle tissue. Therefore, after practice be sure to consume some protein and carbohydrates. A shake made of whey protein and a fast digesting carbohydrate source can be beneficial after wrestling practice in regards to recovery.

Attitude

Are you excited and motivated or burned out from the long season? I hope that you are excited and motivated to win. How badly do you want to qualify for the state tournament? Those wrestlers with an extreme desire to win will most likely wrestle at their best. Winning or losing isn’t the end of the world. However, if you don’t care if you win or don’t have faith in your abilities then you will be at a disadvantage.

Anyone can be beaten. Dan Gable was beaten in his final college match. Rulon Gardner defeated Alexander Karelin who had gone unbeaten for thirteen years in international competition. A University of Iowa wrestler named Matt Egeland was seeded eighth in the 1985 NCAA Wrestling Tournament, but placed 2nd. He defeated the number one seeded wrestler along the way. I had a teammate in high school that was seeded last in the district tournament, but beat the first seed and qualified for the state tournament. Anything can happen in post-season tournaments. Be confident.

Tapering

Tapering involves cutting back on your total volume of training. This gives your body extra rest. You can still have brief intense workouts. You can still drill and focus on your skills and strategy. But, the total amount of wrestling and conditioning should be lowered preceding that big post-season tournament.

Dan Gable and the University of Iowa

In Mike Chapman’s book Wrestling Tough, he discusses Dan Gable and the University of Iowa wrestling program. Coach Gable would sometimes have his wrestlers practicing twice a day leading up to the NCAA championships. This seems to go against the idea of tapering, although I don’t know how long these practices lasted and how intense they were. Coach Gable even had Ed Banach do a third workout at 5 a.m. Ed Banach won the NCAA tournament that year largely because of that extra practice in which he drilled his takedown technique. Would you be willing to pay that price to reach the pinnacle of success? Do you remember what I wrote about drilling earlier? Drilling pays off.

The movie Hoosiers is very inspiring. Before the state finals, the coach tells his team, “Forget about the crowds, the size of their school, their fancy uniforms and remember what got us here. Focus on the fundamentals that we’ve gone over time and time again, and most important, don’t get caught up thinking about winning or losing this game. If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of this game, in my book, we’re gonna be winners!”

Earlier in the movie, the coach says, “There’s a condition in tournament play; do not talk about the next step until you’ve climbed the one in front of you.”

I think that is sound advice. Focus on your fundamentals in the post-season championship series. Take one match at a time and be determined to wrestle to your potential.

In conclusion, peaking can be complicated. Make sure you get enough rest. Drill your skills relentlessly. Do your higher volume workouts earlier in the season and shorter more intense workouts as the season nears its finish. Make sure that you are mentally focused and confident in your abilities.

With proper peaking, you will be fresh, rested, and ready to wrestle your best!

Back-To-School Budgeting

A few months ago we told you about how to stay financially on track while enjoying your summer, and it’s hard to believe but it’s already time to purchase school supplies and send your kids back to the classroom. As adults, we all remember the excitement of new clothes and reconnecting with friends after the summer, mixed with the dread of sitting in class all day for yet another school year. As classrooms become more technical students not only need new clothes and notebooks, for school but sometimes even higher priced tech supplies. With back to school costs ever rising, we recommend parents of school-aged children prepare budgets ahead of time for those first days of classes.

For a family with multiple children, the cost of back-to-school shopping can cost over $600 a year according to The National Retail Federation. If your students attend private school, it could be even more! Planning a budget ahead of time to cope with school spending will ease the overall expenditure. Create a budget that is realistic for the number and ages of your children and include clothes, items on their supply lists and even those extra costs that schools seem to write home about in the first weeks of school.

We recommend using the 50/30/20 budget rule for your home and here is how we think about those back to school expenses:

50% is for necessary expense – this includes your home bills such as a mortgage, groceries, utilities and any tuition you pay today.

30% is for personal expense – this is where your back to school budget should be placed such as notebooks, calculators and new school clothes.

20% is for personal investment – this should include saving for college tuition, retirement and maybe the short-term savings for that new computer someone will need next year.

Back-to-school shopping is also a great way to teach children about handling money and how important it is to stay inside the family budget. Plan a family meeting to share this year’s budget allocation and discuss what items should be included. Once your children are old enough to search online, they can help choose the items they care about, price them into your budget and even find low-cost places to shop. When shopping for clothes, consider giving your teenage-aged children a prepaid debit card to purchase items but limit it to what’s on the card. This will teach them to evaluate how much they spend on items and to see how much specific brands cost.

No matter the budget you set for you and your family, keeping your children involved will keep you all in check and teach your children a valuable lesson. The back-to-school season is a $24 billion industry so setting a plan in advance will help you get the most for your money. If you start to notice your budget getting tight just evaluate where to cut into your 30% expense section such as eating out to give you more wiggle room. You can also start planning for next year now to be better prepared for the expense.

Why Do Teenagers Lose Interest in School?

Do you have a teenager who has lost all interest in school and seems to be on the verge of dropping out? If so, you have probably  found yourself dealing with other issues as well that can also include anger, defiant behavior, aggressiveness and disrespect. Much of those behaviors could be a direct response to something that is out of their control.

Dropping out of school can be one of the worst mistakes your child can make. As a parent, you will want to try and identify the reasons WHY your child is no longer interested in school, and then come up with a plan to help them choose to stay in school. Identifying what is causing the problem may even help to alleviate some of the other behaviors that are causing a problem. If not, then additional help will be required. But for now, start with step 1 – identifying the underlying problem.

Here is a list of the most common reasons teenagers lose interest in school:

  • Struggling socially
  • Depression (they are probably losing interest in other things as well)
  • Struggling academically, or has a learning disability
  • Facing a problem with other kids at school (being bullied)
  • Substance Abuse (drugs or alcohol)
  • A family situation has distracted them from caring about school
  • A boyfriend or girlfriend that are distracting them
  • Peer Pressure
  • An overall lack of interest

As a parent, you will want to sit down with this list and talk with your teenager. You do not have to share the list with them, but rather use it as a guide to help you uncover what the problem or problems may be.   I would choose a neutral, casual place that is not threatening to them in anyway. Your goal is to have an honest and open communication with your teenager that does not result in them feeling defensive or attacked. This is an information seeking time, without anger, judgment or penalties coming to the surface.

Casually begin chatting with your teen, finding out about what is going on in their day-to-day life. Ask them open-ended questions, and then simply listen. This is not the time to point out problems or things you would like to see change. Rather, it is a time to really listen to your teen and show them that you care.

During the conversation, your goal is to see if you can identify one of the above reasons as to why they are no longer interested in school.   Once you have identified the problem, you can then move towards a solution to dealing with that problem. Until this step has been reached, you won’t make any progress in helping your child find a reason to stay in school. Start at the beginning and take it step by step. If you can identify the underlying problem, then you will most likely be able to help them choose to stay in school. Overall behavior should improve as well. If it doesn’t, further help will most likely be needed.

Choosing The Best Hockey Prep School For Your Career

When it comes to building the foundation for your academic education and preparing for a career as a professional hockey player, choosing the right prep school is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.

Prep schools offer outstanding academic education and training, while providing students with the tools and resources they need to develop and improve their skills, giving them the opportunity to reach their fullest potential both academically, and athletically.

Not all prep schools are created equal, and it’s important that you fully evaluate the resources and programs available at different schools and colleges, so that you are familiar with both the curriculum, as well as what level of training you’ll receive.

Many of the elite schools across North America provide students with a personalized training program, that allows for enhanced training and individual, one-on-one training and guidance, however when choosing a hockey prep school, there are other things worth taking into consideration as well, including:

– Does the school foster personal growth by developing community-based programs tailored for each student?

– Does the school provide a solid foundation for academic training that will prepare athletes for life after hockey?

– What is the average class size and capacity? It’s important that class sizes are kept small as to provide personalized training, ensuring well-structured classes and study times.

You want to excel in your academic training while being given the opportunity to equally focus on furthering your hockey skills through regular training and competition-based events.

– Are teachers or professors available outside of regularly scheduled class time?

You want to choose a prep school that offers flexibility such as additional training, personal guidance, and private tutoring in the event your schedule changes, or you need to catch up on missed work.

– Does the school provide a hockey-specific developmental program that includes rigorous training regiment that is designed to provide you with the tools and training you need to reach your goals and meet your potential in the world of hockey?

– Does the prep school provide a solid foundation that nurtures academic excellence, while ensuring that all players are equipped with important life skills that are needed throughout and after your hockey career?

– Does the school offer advanced training and guidance that provides the elite hockey player with the opportunity to identify, recognize and explore all career options, and fulfill their goals both on and off the ice?

These are just a few things to consider when evaluating and choosing the right hockey prep school that will give you the competitive edge you need to become a professional hockey player.

Take your time in researching and evaluating all available options, and make an informed decision. Your future in professional hockey depends on it.

The Benefits

Hockey prep schools are often credited with being the key component in helping transform a new player into an elite professional, who is more than ready for the NHL or the Olympics.

Prep schools have an incredible impact on a player’s ability to increase performance on all levels, due to rigorous training, personal coaching, and regular practice, while competing against elite players throughout the school.

Furthermore, in the event you choose an alternate career path, a hockey prep school will provide you with the academic training and life skills you need to excel at any career you choose. It’s not uncommon for a hockey prep school student to later become a coach, or to specialize in other areas and avenues of hockey.

Tips for Going Back to School on Crutches

As the new school year begins, many parents are worried about the same things as usual. They need to get their children’s school supplies and perhaps even some new clothing. This year, however, you might have a different obstacle on your mind. If your child injured himself over the summer break, he might be starting the year off on crutches. While starting a new grade can be hard for many reasons, going into the year on crutches can make everything that much harder. Here are a few tips to help you plan ahead so that your child can start the year off on one foot with as much ease as possible.

Tip#1 Prepare the School

The first thing you need to do to get ready for the school year is talk to your child’s school. Inform the school about your child’s injury so you can put the proper gears into motion. You might, for example, have to get medications to the school nurse so your child can get what he needs at the right time during the day. The school might also allow your child extra time to get from class to class. You might also ask if your child can have access to the school elevator if the school has stairs. You will also need to excuse your child from gym and get any other needed instructions to the school. If your child’s school is ready for your child, the transition to the school year will be much more smooth.

Tip#2 Prepare Your Child

When the school year starts, your child might be ready to go full steam ahead. You will need to prepare him or what he is about to face. Remind him to listen to his body so he knows when he needs to rest or ask for extra help. Tell him of the things he might have to face in school that could be hard like carrying books, going up and down stairs, and sitting for long periods of time. Help him to find ways to get around these obstacles like by asking friends to carry things for him. If your child knows what to expect, he will get through the first few days more easily and adjust to the new situation, even on crutches.

Tip#3 Look into Alternatives to Crutches

As you may have noticed, everything is harder for your child when he is on crutches. When you think about sending him off to school, you might be scared for just how hard it is all going to be. One thing you could do is look into mobility devices other than crutches to help make his day easier in a number of ways. There are several great options on the market that can really help your child get around easier and faster.

Going back to school is never easy, but when your child is on crutches, it can be even harder. These tips can help you prepare both your child and his school in order to make the change from summer to school time as seamless as possible.
