How To Make Your Own Cookie Cutter

Cookies come prepackaged in boxes or they can be purchased in bakeries and grocery stores, but nothing beats the taste of homemade cookies. Crunchy, chewy, or buttery – people of all age, shapes and sizes enjoy bite after bite of delicious cookies. Additionally, cookies are more fun to eat when they come in fun shapes.

You can buy cookie cutters but if you want a fancier cookie cutter, it’s easy to make one yourself.

Materials are readily available in hardware stores and making them requires just a few simple steps.

Here are the materials that you will be needing:

-A roll of aluminum – be sure to use only food grade aluminum, as some types of aluminum contain chemicals that are not safe for use in food products. Check the gauge of the aluminum – the stronger the gauge, the harder it will be to bend the metal to the desired shape.

-The shape of your planned cookie cutter

-A ruler or straight-edge

-A pair of scissors – if you are using a heavy gauge aluminum you can use tin snips

-A knife

-Clips

-Adhesive – You should check to make sure they are safe for food

Follow these simple steps on how to make your own cookie cutter:

-Lay the photograph or the image you want to be the design of your cookie cutter. Get the twine and follow the lines of the image using the twine.

-To measure the length of the aluminum you can use the length of the twine as a gauge as well.

-Cut the aluminum depending on the width that you want.

-Bend the aluminum according to the shape of the desired cookie cutter (the image that you have).

-Place adhesive at the ends of the cutter.

-Use clips to hold the ends together as you allow it to dry.

You can use old soda cans so you don’t have to purchase aluminum (besides, soda cans are already safe for food use). And when you no longer want the same shape, you can simply discard it and create another one. Seems that as long as you have empty soda cans and a splash of creativity, you can easily create the cookie cutter of your dreams.

You can even ask kids to help you out for more fun and bonding time in the kitchen. Just make sure you make them wear gloves or anything that will protect their hands from any possible cut from the aluminum edges or the knife. Now you just need to whip up your favorite recipe and you’re on your way to some yummy cookie time.

Astrology of Commitment-Phobia

Planets in Aquarius:

Aquarius is the natural ruler of the 11th house, and is ruled by the planet Uranus. The characteristics of Aquarius are: unpredictability, instability, and freedom-loving. As such, people with planets in Aquarius tend to display these characteristics towards their mates, especially if the Sun, Moon, and/or Venus is in Aquarius. Aquarian men need tons of space and freedom, and feel “trapped” if they feel tied down. This is why this sign is known for commitment-phobia. Aquarius is also the rebel, so anything “traditional” when it comes to relationships just won’t do. Indeed, non-traditional relationships, such as long-distance relationships, work best for these guys.

Aquarius men are often stuck in their own worlds. They are constantly thinking and processing information, so it’s easy for them to forget to call or write. Also, Aquarius men shun neediness and clingy-ness, so if their partner shows major signs of co-dependency, they will distance themselves from the relationship. Aquas are also very independent, and need space to do their own thing. In addition, Aquarius people tend to see everyone as equals; they’re just as likely to help a stranger as they are likely to help a long-time friend. Because of this, they are less likely to give anyone “special treatment.” Finally, Aquas are known for their emotional detachment. They are often oblivious to the feelings of others, so he might find it difficult to understand that you have needs.

Aquarius men work best with partners who also have their own lives. If you’re in a relationship with an Aquarius person, don’t give up your life for him. Waiting by the phone for him to call, or nagging him constantly will get you nowhere in this relationship.

If an Aqua ignores you, ignore him back. Don’t be afraid to do this. You may think that by ignoring him, you’re pushing him away, but it’s actually quite the opposite: ignoring him will get his attention. There’s nothing more appealing to an Aqua man than an independent woman who has her own life and doesn’t necessarily need him.

Since Aquas are emotionally detached, gentle reminders to call you back or simply letting him know that you don’t appreciate his behavior can be beneficial. It’s important not to nag him about it; just gently express your feelings. Aquas don’t respond well to emotional scenes, so try to keep the conversation rational, as it will appeal to his intellect.

Prominent Uranus Aspects and Placements:

Prominent Uranus aspects include hard aspects to one’s Sun, Moon, Venus, Ascendant/Descendant axis, or Uranus in the fifth or seventh house.

People with prominent Uranus placements tend to have Aquarian traits, as Uranus is the ruler of Aquarius. People with prominent Uranus in their charts are independent, freedom-loving folk who hate to be tied down.

Like Aquarius folk, they have a tremendous need for space and independence, so relationships can be tricky for them. Relationships usually start and end quickly for Uranian people. They are attracted to the “newness” of relationships, which is hard to maintain in the long run. Their relationships are marked by an on-off energy; when their partners get too close, the Uranian person distances himself, but when the partner is nowhere to be found, the Uranian person gains interest again. Instability and unpredictability are the hallmarks of Uranian relationships. These people tend to also be attracted to non-traditional relationships (i.e. long-distance), and are attracted to non-traditional partners (i.e. people from different localities, backgrounds, cultures, etc.).

So, how do you deal with a Uranian man, when it comes to relationships? Again, having your own life and giving him plenty of space is key to making this work. People with prominent Uranus in their charts tend to do well with other Uranian people; they each give each other plenty of space and understand each other’s need for freedom.

Demosthenes – Great Athenian Orator and Statesman

Demosthenes (384-322 BC) was the greatest orator in Athens, Ancient Greece.

He was also an Athenian statesman, whose life’s major theme was his support of Athenian liberty and opposition to the rising imperial power of kingdom of Macedon, a state just to the north of Athens.

Demosthenes lived in the golden age of Athens and was a contemporary of Plato and Aristotle.

His father died when Demosthenes was just seven years and left him a good inheritance, but the boy’s guardians squandered most of the sum due to him. He is said to have undertaken his first studies in rhetoric and law as a preparation for suing the guardians for the lost money.

According to the ancient biographer, Plutarch, Demosthenes had an underground study where he could exercise his voice. Plutarch also reported that Demosthenes had a lisp (“an inarticulate and stammering pronunciation”) that he treated by practicising declamation while running or by speaking with pebbles in his mouth.

Demosthenes’ first important speeches, the Philippics (351, 341 BC) and the Olynthiacs (349 BC), were directed against Philip II, the ruler of Macedon, the danger that Philip and Macedon posed for Athens and the need for military preparedness on the part of Athens.

According to Plutarch, the subjects of Demosthenes’ speeches never varied for the decades that he was in politics: “The object which he chose for himself in the commonwealth was noble and just, the defense of the Grecians against Philip.”

Goaded on by Demosthenes, the Athenians finally clashed militarily with Philip on behalf of their fellow Greek state which had appealed to Athens for help. However, the Athenians were defeated.

Demosthenes had an enemy, an Athenian orator named Aeschines. Demosthenes suspected Aeschines being too soft on Philip of Macedon when negotiating with him. He indicted Aeschines for betraying Athens. Demosthenes’ brilliant speeches in this case have survived to this day (published as “The False Legation”). Aeschines narrowly escaped conviction.

In 340 BC, war broke out again between Athens and Macedon. It ended in the total defeat of Athens and her allies in the Battle of Chaeronea (338).

A proposal made to present Demosthenes with a golden crown was opposed by Aeschines and his pro-Macedon supporters. A trial was held with the underlying aim of discrediting Demosthenes. Instead, Demosthenes declaimed his oratorical masterpiece, On the Crown, in which he totally vindicated himself against the accusations of Aeschines.

In 336, Philip of Macedon was assassinated and was succeeded by his son, Alexander the Great. Alexander turned out to be more than an implacable foe to Athens and her allies than his father had been.

In 324, Demosthenes was accused of embezzlement. He was convicted and exiled.

With the death of Alexander in 323 BC, Demosthenes was recalled to Athens, where he made a final effort to end the threat of Macedon. Unfortunately, Macedon (under its new ruler, Antipater) again crushed Athens and her allies. Demosthenes was said to have fled the field of battle and was sentenced to death. He escaped but, seeing Antipater’s soldiers coming to arrest him, committed suicide.

Demosthenes was both a great statesman and a great orator. As a statesman, he rallied the often fickle Athenian citizenry to oppose the the military power of Macedon. As an orator, he wrote speeches of genius, whose rhetorical techniques have been studied by every generation since his death.

The Importance Of A Sewing Accessory

For many people, the art of sewing is a long gone skill that is no longer necessary. As we head to the many retail stores that offer the clothes and other materials that we need, we find that there is no longer a need to sit down with our needle and thread – or at our sewing machine – and create a piece that we can easily purchase in a fraction of the time. But for others, sewing is a skill and hobby they will never relinquish as it allows them to save money and infuse their own personal style and creativity into every piece they make. And for these people, having the proper sewing accessory at hand at all times is necessary for success and enjoyment.

There are a great many fabric stores today that offer all that you need to complete your latest sewing project – miles and miles of fabric and every tool imaginable. Of course, the added benefit of these stores is the helpful and knowledgeable employees who will assist you in finding everything you need. In order to begin and successfully complete your project however, you must know what sewing accessory is integral in the process.

For those who sew by hand, the sewing accessory that is needed is very different than if they were to sew by machine. In addition to material, hand sewn items require a needle and a variety of thread colors that match your fabric. Additionally, fabric scissors, a ruler, and a thimble are all worthwhile tools. For those who sew by machine, the needle is still a necessary sewing accessory. Of course thread, scissors, and a ruler are also needed.

In either case, for most people, a pattern is, by far, the most important sewing accessory needed to get the job done right. A pattern will act as a template to help you design and complete the project. A well-chosen sewing accessory will put you well on your way to a beautiful outcome.

History of Madurai

Madurai is one of the largest cities in Tamil Nadu. It is located on the banks of the River Vaigai. The settlements at Madurai started two thousand years ago and Madurai is considered as one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It was called by various names as Koodal, Koodal Nagaram, Naanmada Koodal, Thiruvalaivai and Aalavai. It is said that the name Madurai should have originated from the word Madhura meaning sweetness. Also it is said that the landscape on the banks of the River Vaigai was called Marutham and Madurai was the mutation of that name.

The original city was called Then Madurai and this was destroyed by great Tsunami in Kumari Kandam. The different names of the place were quoted in the 17th century writings by Paranjothi Munivar named Thiruvilayaadal Puraanam. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva showered his blessings on the land and so it was called Madhurapuri which means The City of Divine Nectar.

The history of Madurai starts with 300 B.C. when the Greek ambassador Megasthenes visited the place. He had recorded the name of the city as Methora in his works. There was a mention about the city in Arthashastra written by Kautilya, the Greek geographer Strabo and the works of the Roman historians Pliny and Ptolemy. Sangam literature flourished here during the reign of Pandya rulers. The great epic Silapathikaram was written during the 2nd century A.D.

Initially, Kalabhras were ruling this territory. They were considered as evil kings and were not benevolent. In 550 A.D. Pandyas drove them and came to power. They ruled the place for more than 3 centuries. In the 9th century, Chola dynasty held supremacy over the region. They held sway for next four years until the Pandyan Empire was again established in 13th century. Kulasekhara Pandiyan was the last Pandiyan ruler. After this, Delhi Sultanate captured the place and brought it under its control. However, Madurai Sultanate was established and this served as an independent kingdom.

In 1378, Vijayanagar rulers captured Madurai and ruled the place. The Nayaks of Madurai defeated the Vijayanagar king in 1559 and brought Madurai under their control. The rule of Nayaks lasted for nearly 200 years. In 1736 Madurai changed hands. Many rulers like Chanda Sahib, Arcot Nawab and Maruthanayagam had the control of the place after that. They ruled over this place until the beginning of 19th century.

In 1801, the city of Madurai came under the direct control of the British East India Company. The city saw huge developments after that. It became a municipality in 1866. During the struggle for independence many personalities from Madurai namely Mohammed Ismail Sahib, Meer Niyamatullah Ibrahim Sahib and N.M.R. Subbaraman took part in it. After the independence of India, Madurai grew to become the third largest city in Tamil Nadu state.

Madurai is famous for its Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. It was built during the regime of Kulasekara Pandyan. The Madurai photos and Madurai videos show this majestic temple standing in the middle of the city. This ancient historic place is really worth visiting.

A Book Review Of George Orwell’s "Animal Farm"

Animal Farm is a savage satire on communist revolution written by George Orwell. Set on an English Farm named Manor Farm, this fable-like story concerns the misery that the animals faced in the hands of human beings. The story opens with Mr. Jones, a capable farmer, stumbling into bed after a night of excessive whisky drinking. Old Major, a reverential, time-honored pig, called all the animals together for a meeting which took place after Mr. Jones had gone to bed. They gathered outside the big barn on the farm. Old Major told them his extraordinary dream in which he saw his approaching death, and pointed out that their lives as farm animals were miserable, laborious, and short. They were forced to work like slaves up to the last atom of their strength, and once their usefulness had come to an end, they were slaughtered. Moreover, Old Major said that there is no animal in England that was free, and none of them should escape the cruel knife in the end. Old Major affirmed that the root cause of the farm animals’ infelicitous existence was the tyranny of man.

For Old Major, mankind is lazy and is the only real enemy of the animals. Mankind is the root cause of hunger and overwork, stealing the whole produce of animal labor and consumes without producing. Indeed, he is the tyrant who serves the interests of no one else except himself. Old Major described his vision of England where animals could live in peaceful and plentiful coexistence with each other, free from the despotic rule of man. He taught the animals “Beasts of England”, a song which became their revolutionary anthem.

Old Major exhorted the farm animals to band together to defeat their common enemy by carrying out a rebellion, which led them to the establishment of Animal Farm, their model community in which all animals were equal. Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, gained control of the farm when Old Major died a few days after he spoke to the assembly. Napoleon succeeded in ousting Snowball. He became the absolute ruler. The animals adjusted with the human system of labor due to economic necessity, and learned that under the tyrannical Napoleon, their state of lives was as bad as their first when Mr. Jones was still in control.

The plot of the story can be attributed to different political ideologies, one of which was Plato’s idea on tyranny. Plato’s description of a tyrant is clearly manifested in the government ruled by Napoleon. First, a tyrant appears to be pleasant and gracious at the initial stages of his dominance to get the sympathy of the people. He shows himself as refined and congenial. Napoleon, the fierce-looking Berkshire boar, was primarily silent, allowing Snowball to express his aims and ideas on social and societal improvements. Nonetheless, as time went on, he was seen as always in disagreement with Snowball, and eventually made the latter as his rival. They often debated and this resulted to misunderstanding in almost about everything. The two boars divided the farm animals into two camps of supporters. Napoleon disapproved of Snowball’s plan to build a windmill which would eliminate hard labor. He refuted everything and asserted that it would be better if they concentrated on increasing the food production and that harvest was more important than the building of a windmill.

Second, a tyrant is always at war with the good. He uses the art of making war or conflict upon his rivals. He destroys them either secretly or openly because he believes they stand in his way of power. In addition, he undermines associations and takes the lives of his friends and allies who contradict or oppose his ideas. Accordingly, Napoleon thought that Snowball was the obstacle in his path to power. On a debate, he called for ferocious dogs which he trained and drove Snowball off the farm. Napoleon succeeded in ousting his rival and became the single leader of the farm animals.

Third, a tyrant breeds mutual distrust. He destroys associations, isolates people, makes them strangers, and deprives them off of their arms. He humiliates his subjects and makes them incapable of action. Napoleon broke his association with Snowball by expelling him to be able to gain control of Animal Farm. Squealer, Napoleon’s spokesperson, was the one who informed the people about Napoleon’s ill-meaning plans. His orders were in a way sadistic. The farm animals were commanded to toil to and fro even if it was difficult for them. They worked like slaves and were led to believe that the fruits of their hard work would benefit themselves and not the human beings. Besides, Napoleon pronounced that genuine happiness was gained through hard work and earning frugally. The farm animals’ ignorance became his advantage, and convinced them that their efforts would benefit them in the end, even if it exceeded their capabilities. The farm animals had no power to initiate and were utterly enslaved. No one even dared to speak his mind. They became submissive to Napoleon who broke their spirit and made them subservient and inferior. Clover, the cart-horse, being unable to read, was effortlessly deluded by Napoleon’s commandments and obeyed false rules due to her illiteracy. It is one of the desires of a tyrant that his subjects should be incapable of action so that they will not realize his misdemeanor, for no one attempts what is impossible, and that they will not attempt to overthrow a tyrant, if they were powerless.

Fourth, a tyrant, once in power, isolates himself from the outside world. He provides for himself with sentinels. Frequently, when Napoleon was already reigning in Animal Farm, he rarely appeared in public. He spent most of his time in the farmhouse. He was protected by his fierce-looking dogs. He issued his orders through one of the other pigs, usually Squealer. Whenever Napoleon appeared in public, he was attended to by his entourage of vicious dogs. He had no regard for any public interest, except as conducive to his private ends. Napoleon aimed for pleasure and had all the vices. He also aimed for wealth for through this only can a tyrant maintain either his guards or his luxuries. Napoleon was engrossed in making pleasure for himself, and became desirous of riches. He was proud, yet his love for money cheated him when Frederick, the owner of Pinchfield Farm, paid him forged banknotes and even attacked his farm and destroyed the windmill.

Finally, a tyrant confuses his subjects by asking writers to compose poems and songs to pay tribute to his glory. This would conceal his transgressions, leading his subjects astray and making them think that their ruler is not ruthless at all. In the story, there were recitations of poems composed in Napoleon’s honor. “Comrade Napoleon” was a poetry composed by Minimus, expressing the magnificent reign of Napoleon and the superb feeling towards him on the farm.

Thomas Aquinas’s idea on the dangers of tyranny was expressed in the story. According to Aquinas, tyranny is the worst kind of government for the tyrant brings the community to peril through his unjust rule. The government of Napoleon was, indeed, in the form of tyranny. Napoleon paid no heed to the common good and sought his own private good. Yet, Aquinas declared that if the dictatorship is slight, it would be more advisable to tolerate it than for citizens to involve themselves into rebellion against the despot. None of the farm animals dared to go against Napoleon because they were terrified and ignorant, and they thought that if those who act against him were unable to triumph, they would be oppressed and the cruelty that they were experiencing would be graver.

Political ideologies by Niccolo Machiavelli are also apparent in Animal Farm. According to Machiavelli’s The Prince, in order to be complied with by his subjects, a ruler, which he specified as a prince, should not deviate from what is good, but be able to do evil if necessary in order to maintain authority. Napoleon even managed to kill his subjects who he considered as supporters of Squealer. Some of them committed suicide, yet the farm animals did not dare to rebel against Napoleon’s private actions for some were ignorant and others emphasized that Napoleon could do no wrong, and was thus, always right, which therefore helped him retain his power.

Machiavelli stated that it is very profitable for a prince to give some outstanding example of his greatness in the internal administration. He must endeavor in every action to obtain fame and to appear outstanding for being good and excellent. Nothing would cause a leader to be so much esteemed as having great projects and giving proof of prowess. Napoleon demonstrated himself as a brilliant administrator by wearing medals, most of which were awarded to him by himself. He was attended by his retinue of huge, vicious canines who frisked around him, growling and scaring the farm animals. Napoleon was referred in formal style as “Our Leader, Comrade Napoleon” and other dignifying, invented titles. His alter ego, Squealer, would talk in a speech, with tears rolling down his cheeks, about Napoleon’s wisdom, the righteousness of the latter’s heart, and the deep love that he showed to all the farm animals, even to those who they thought were discontented and still existed in ignorance and slavery. Every successful achievement and stroke of good fortune were credited to Napoleon. Farm animals were even heard as giving respects and praises to Napoleon, saying that they had profited from his administration.

Napoleon was able to contrive great things. He kept the farm animals’ minds uncertain, astonished and gripped in watching the results. These actions have arisen one out of the other, and left them no time to settle down and act against him. Napoleon fraudulently ordered the farm animals to work hard in order to attain their aspirations for a better life. They were immersed with hard labor, believing that its results would be to their advantage. Boxer, who was one of the most loyal workers on the farm, accepted and performed everything that his authorities commanded, despite his poor health, the long hours of labor and insufficient ration of food which were hard to shoulder. Furthermore, the desired ends were not directed to those who exerted efforts but to Napoleon. Machiavelli’s notion of a wise prince is one who seeks means by which his subjects will always and in every possible condition of things, have a need for government and that they would always be faithful and obedient to him. He is, indeed, powerful and courageous who will always overcome difficulties by raising the hopes of his subjects, advising them that the evils will not last long, and stressing the greatness of bringing the enemy to justice. Animal Farm showed Napoleon ordering the rebuilding of the windmill, underlining that Snowball, his prime suspect, should be taught a lesson and prove to him that he cannot undo their hard work easily. Thus, the farm animals, though some were in disbelief that Snowball could do such action, toiled hard and grew exhausted. Nevertheless, their hearts blindly continued to burst with pride when their masterpiece was done. It was put forth that alls well that ends well, that the discouragements and iron labor had been overcome.

In the end, the farm animals remained hopeful for a society free from hunger and the whip, all equal, each working according to his capacity. They seemed contented to work like slaves towards the objectives of their tyrannical ruler who eventually aspired equality with humans. The farm animals were satisfied with the fact that the fruits of their labor benefited their fellow animals and not the human beings which they initially considered as the tyrant.

Tyranny would have not continued to control the Manor Farm if the farm animals would have been wise enough to choose their new leader after Old Major died. Since during his reign, they have practiced democracy under the governance of Mr. Jones, the farm animals should have continued their democratic practice, especially in choosing or the election of a new leader. Instead, they just accepted the new government under Snowball and Napoleon, and were made to believe that pigs were clever enough to rule. Napoleon, who was initially a wolf in a sheep’s clothing, would not have taken over if the farm animals would have been mindful and sensible enough to elect a governor who is unlikely to become a tyrant. The farm animals should not have shown the white feather and become submissive. The new administration must have been established that the possibility to tyrannize was eliminated. Their new leader’s power should have been regulated and that the citizens should have strived to maintain their right to be heard. The power of the single ruler should have been moderated if their government had other branches that would make stipulations if ever their new leader would lead to tyranny. There should have been a marshal to monitor the ruler’s conduct. The farm animals, moreover, should have been informed about their ruler’s undertakings and asked if they are in agreement or contrary to his plans.

A democratic set-up could have managed the farm animals’ situation well. The modern democratic administration employs the success of the ruler is merely not for himself, but also for the majority. The rule of the majority of the farm animals should have prevailed. They should not have left themselves duped by their ruler’s wrongdoings and fought for their right to swear in a capable, transparent, and humane administrator. Snowball manifested an optimistic and skillful leader. The farm animals, knowing that he was competent enough to lead their society into the majority’s ideal form, should have fought for his rule right at the start, albeit massive destruction would have happened because if they really wanted a new society under a fair government, they would not have left themselves suffering and badly yearning for better conditions, because by hook or by crook, they would have fought for their rights and aspirations.

Bible and Women – Women in 1 Timothy 2:11-13

1 Timothy  2:11-13 is usually mistranslated into English, “Let the woman learn in silence in all subjection. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man but to be silent. For Adam was formed first then Eve.” The correct translation of the passage is, “A woman must learn and she is to learn without causing a fuss and be supportive in everything. I most certainly do not grant authority to a woman to teach that she is the originator of a man – rather, she is not to cause a fuss – for Adam was formed first, then Eve.

Authenteo, originator,  is a rare Greek word that occurs once in the New Testament. The verb and noun occurred a mere twenty times in the classical Greek authors. Apart from the one instance in Euripides’ Suppliants, the word occurred nineteen times with the meaning “murderer/killer.” However, it should be noted that in the fifth speech of Antiphon, the word is used in the sense of originator, perpetrator of the murder.

The remaining classical example is from Euripides’ Suppliants. It is usually rendered, “Again, where people are absolute masters over the land…” but a correct translation is, “Where democracy springs from the earth…”

Let us turn to the papyri. The word occurs over twenty times in the papyri in the meaning “original,” “originator of.” It eventually does take on the meaning “master,” “mastery (over)” but not until many centuries after New Testament times. This is however disputed in two papyrus examples. The first is P.Leid.W. 6.46, in the vocative case where the sun is addressed, “…the archangel of those under the world, O authenta sun!” It has been assumed that the meaning is “O ruling sun!” as those in Western European culture assumed that ancients saw the sun as a ruler. However, the papyrus was Mithraic. Mithras was connected with the sun’s life-giving powers, and Mithras was believed to cause plants to spring from the earth. There was no hint of the sun being ruler; rather, the sun was considered to be the source, the originator, of life.

The other papyrus example is BGU 4.1208, which lexicons have cited for the meaning “authority, mastery over.” However, the real meaning is apparent from a reading of the Greek text, which states that the sea captain should have adhered to the original agreement. The whole context supports the meaning “original” as do specific parallel words in the text.

The adjective occurs on one inscription, Aus Lydien, no. 46, an inscription recording parts of two rescripts from the proconsul Maximilianus to the Asiarch Dominus Rufus. The text reads, “I deposited a copy of the commands…the original (authentike) command which was written….”

The vocabulary of 1 Timothy alludes to various magical practices of Ephesus and to the problem of Gnosticism. The focus of the pastoral epistles is the problem of teachings contrary to those of Christianity.

1 Timothy 2:12-13 is to be translated as follows: “I most certainly do not grant authority to a woman to teach that she is the originator of a man: rather, she is not to cause a fuss. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.”

Why would a woman teach that she is the originator of a man? At the time 1 Timothy was written, Gnosticism was in its early stages. The Gnostic literature states that Eve was formed first, then she enlisted the help of a goddess to help her form Adam. Thus at the time 1 Timothy was written, early Gnostics were stating that women were the originators of men.. In 1945 the Nag Hammadi Library discovered a collection of thirteen ancient codices containing over fifty Gnostic texts in upper Egypt. On the Origin of the World was among the Nag Hammadi texts. The creation account in On the Origin of the World is as follows: “After the day of rest Sophia sent her daughter Zoe, being called Eve, as an instructor in order that she might make Adam, who had no soul, arise so that those whom he should engender might become containers of light. When Eve saw her male counterpart prostrate she had pity upon him, and she said, ‘Adam! Become alive! Arise upon the earth!’ Immediately her word became accomplished fact. For Adam, having arisen, suddenly opened his eyes. When he saw her he said, ‘You shall be called “Mother of the Living.” For it is you who have given me life.”

This is why the author of 1 Timothy continues, “for Adam was formed first, then Eve.” 1 Timothy 2:13-15 makes sense in light of the threat to Christianity of the teachings of Gnosticism.

I should also point out that the word usually mistranslated “silence ” here is hesukhia. This word does not in fact mean “silence”. It means to cause less fuss, to become quiet in behavior. The same word occurs in Acts 22:2 in the meaning that the crowd caused less fuss, not in a meaning that they became more verbally silent (which, of course, would be an absurd expression).

Iraq and the Near Ascent of the End Times King?

Grover Cleveland experienced a meteoric rise to power when he went from being a moderately successful Buffalo lawyer in 1881 to being elected president of the United States in just three years! One of Cleveland’s biographers, Horace Samuel Merrill, explained his political rise in this way: “He was lucky-almost unbelievably lucky!”

It may have seemed that he was “unbelievably lucky,” but the Bible declares that luck has nothing to do with anything-including a rise from seeming obscurity to great power. Instead, the only real explanation for anything of that sort is that God provided for it to happen. In fact, in comparing Daniel 2:21; John 3:27; 19:11; and 1 Corinthians 4:7, we can see that any authority possessed by anyone is due to God granting it.

However, Grover Cleveland’s amazing rise from obscurity to power will seem as nothing compared to the rise of a man from the seeming obscurity of a Middle Eastern country to become ruler over the world. Certainly, luck will have nothing to do with that rise, as the Bible tells us that Satan will be behind it. Yet, the same prophet of God who declared that God “removes kings and raises up kings” (Daniel 2:21), and who prophesies of this future king, indicates that his rise will be part of God’s plan for the world.

The Bible declares that this future leader is Assyrian by background (see Isaiah 14:25 and Micah 5:6). In addition, Scripture also shows that he will arise from the area that is common to three empires-the Assyrian Empire; the Seleucid Empire; and the Roman Empire. The region common to all three empires falls within northern Iraq. Interestingly, the largest group of Assyrians in the world exists in northwest Iraq (in Kurdistan), around the place where the ancient Assyrian capital, Nineveh, existed.

The book of Daniel (11:36-45) describes this future ruler as the king of the North and reveals he will conquer the Middle East and northern Africa before entering into Jerusalem. It will be from this city of God that he will begin his three-and-a-half-year rule over the world.

If his rise to power is in the near future, we might expect God to be preparing the way for his ascension even now. There may be some clues that God has already begun that preparation.

There is a sense in which God began that preparation by providing for the U.S. to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Under Hussein, the Assyrians, though Christians, were protected by this neo-Nebuchadnezzar; for he respected the fact that they were the educated of Iraq-the doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc. When Hussein was removed, America not only readied the king of the North’s ascent by destabilizing the country, but the U.S. removed protection of the Assyrians from persecution.

As a result, the Assyrians have become the most persecuted people group in the world without their own nation, dropping from an estimated Iraqi population under Saddam Hussein of 1.2 million to under 400,000 today. At this rate, there will be no Assyrians left in Iraq in about four years, which is why the rise of the king of the North will likely occur within the next few years. It seems that this future king will begin his ascent in power when he steps in to protect his people. He will, of course, be attacked when he does, which is indicated in Daniel 11:40; but his response to being attack will result in his conquest of the region.

This land from which he will arise has become even more unstable due to the vacuum created by the drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq. As a result, the concern is evident that Iraq is moving into the orbit of Iran. One recent example of this seems to be Iraq’s moral and financial support of the Syrian regime.

However, it appears Iran will not be able to fill this vacuum. Instead, because Iraqis see Iran as the enemy, a whole host of countries, such as Turkey, China, Lebanon, and Kuwait, are making the biggest inroads into Iraq. The dividing of the power there creates a perfect environment for the powerful rise of the future king.

One such division in power has served to create its own region within Iraq. That region is Kurdistan. As noted above, it is that area in which the greatest number of Assyrians dwell. And, interestingly, there are similarities between the Kurds, who are a stateless, persecuted people, and the Assyrians, who are also a stateless, persecuted people-similarities which appear to go beyond coincidence. Might God be using one people group for the other to align with end-times prophecy?

Consider that both the Kurds and the Assyrians are persecuted in the same areas of the Middle East-particularly in Turkey and in Iraq. However, because the Kurds are Muslims, Iraq has permitted them to have their own region-in the northwest area of Iraq that is now called Kurdistan. Interestingly, the Assyrians, which are even more persecuted than are the Kurds in Iraq because they are Christians, reside mostly in Kurdistan. It appears God has provided for them to gather there because the Kurds can identify with their suffering; thus, they have a bit more help there, as a result.

This help includes the presence of an Assyrian in the government in Kurdistan-Sarkis Aghajan Mamendo, the finance minister. That position has enabled Mamendo to provide help to his fellow Assyrians who have been beset by attacks of persecution. Mamendo has been able to use his position to help Assyrians rebuild homes and churches destroyed by Muslims who have set fire to them.

This, like the gathering of the Assyrians in the area located near the ancient Assyrian capital, Nineveh, appears to be providential. Mamendo’s financial help enables the Assyrians to hang in there until God’s providential timing of the rise of the king of the North. When it comes, it will be far more meteoric than that of Grover Cleveland. In the meantime, we can see the hand of God preparing for it.

How Ancient Islamic Jewellery Developed Over the Years

Islam is a religion which has prevailed over the world for over 1400 years now and is spread out all across the globe. Initially the advent of Islam was in the Arab region, but over time, it spread in other Middle Eastern, Asian and European countries as well. As it proliferated in different regions slight changes were noticed in the forms of Islamic jewellery, dressing, art and architecture. It evolved to incorporate the various local customs and traditions from the areas that were added to the Islamic empire.

Ancient Islamic jewellery can be segmented according to the ruler eras. The most popular of these include:

• Ancient Arab and Persian Jewellery: This includes the designs and styles worn at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the Arab and Persian regions.

• Ancient Ummayyad and Abbasaid jewellery: The changes that were seen in the Arab jewellery articles during the reigns of these two Muslim rulers make up the ancient pieces of these eras.

• Ottoman Empire jewellery: The Ottoman Empire extended from Southeastern Europe to Western Asia and Northern Africa. Therefore there was a lot of diversity in the traditions of these regions, which were all incorporated into the jewellery popular during the Ottoman reign.

• Artuqid and Turkish Islamic Jewellery: Although Turkey is a part of the Ottoman Empire, the Turkish jewellery evolved once the empire no longer existed. The changes that emerged are what symbolize the jewellery from this era.

The ancient articles mostly comprised of solid gold and silver coins inscribed with verses from the Holy Quran. These coins were mostly worn as necklaces or occasionally turned into rings and bracelets. The ancient Islamic jewellery was simple in nature and did not incorporate intricate designs and gemstones. The higher quality of gold or silver the better it was considered.

Ancient Islamic jewellery evolved into the present day articles available as the rulers conquered various regions. The use of gemstones and other alloys was initiated after quite some time. However, it is important to know that during the Prophet Muhammad’s time, women were permitted to adorn themselves with all types of jewellery articles within the boundaries set forth for decency and modesty in Islam, but men were discouraged to wear any gold on their bodies. Silver was and is permissible for Muslim men to wear, but it should not be too gaudy or showy.

The modern day jewellery articles worn by the Muslims across the globe all have certain features that have carried over from the ancient Islamic Jewellery designs and some are still as popular as before.
