The Silver Bullet

Three months after I graduated from college, and one month before I began flight training to become a US Naval Aviator, I bought a slightly used Datsun 280Z sports car. My father thought that I had lost my mind when I told him that I traded a three-year-old Dodge Dart that sported the famed "slant six" engine for a coupe with no trunk. I did not tell him that the loss of the tricked out stereo system (centered on an 8 track tape player) in the Dodge had bothered me the most. I gave the auto dealer my entire collection of fifty 8 track tapes with the trade in because the 280Z featured a new (at the time) cassette tape deck with the stereo system.

I named my 280Z ( sterling silver in color) "The Silver Bullet." I became "The Lone Ranger," not so much because of the name of my car, but because my "almost engaged with me" college girlfriend began to question her life as a future Navy wife. She had two years of college in front of her, and I was no longer with her in Charleston, SC. Suitors told her that if she married me she would become "a sea widow" when I deployed with my ship for many months at a time. Guess what? Apparently the car does make the man. The Silver Bullet became a head turner and soon I dropped the irrelevant Lone Ranger title for me.

The Silver Bullet moved like the wind itself! I especially loved to race it on I-10 (East-West Interstate Highway 10) on weekend nights when I traveled between Naval Air Station Whiting Field and Pensacola, to "Trader's Johns" (famous Naval Aviator dance and dinner club). On several occasions, the police stopped me for speeding. Lucky for me, each time, the officer wanted to check out The Silver Bullet. I showed officers how I could raise and lower the radio antenna by flipping a switch in the cockpit. Who would write a traffic ticket after seeing that?

One year after I bought the 280Z I engaged to marry a Pensacola girl. Then, I faced the grim prospect of supporting both a wife and a sports car. I negotiated with my credit union to extend the loan for the car. The loan officer told me that the credit union would only do that in an emergency situation. "I am getting married," I revealed, which qualified as an emergency. I got the girl and I kept the car! Six months after marriage, I received the Wings of Gold and a designation as a Naval Aviator. My new wife, a guinea pig in a cage, and I drove away in The Silver Bullet on a bright summer morning, to begin the adventure that the Navy promised and delivered to us.

In Living Color (Season 3) DVD Review

Nominated for 17 Emmys in its short four-year stint, In Living Color is widely considered the best skit comedy show since SNL. Created by the multitalented star Keenen Ivory Wayans (the eldest child from a large and talented family), the 30-minute TV show became an instant hit for emerging big network competitor FOX in the spring of 1990. Showcasing the talents of the Wayans family (especially blockbuster talent Damon Wayans), along with initial cast members David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, Kim Coles, T’keyah “Crystal” Keymah, Kelly Coffield, and Jim Carrey (who would use the show as a springboard to smash hit movie career that would begin with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994), In Living Color quickly achieved the status of TV cult icon…

Along with clever, cutting-edge writing, In Living Color featured a plethora of talented cast members who would move on to enormously successful Hollywood careers. The show’s dance troop, The Fly Girls, hired an ambitious dancer named Jennifer Lopez for the show’s final season, and Season 2 of the show involved the hire of Oscar Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx (of Collateral and Ray). For its final season, In Living Color also featured notable appearances by comedian Chris Rock. Along the way, the series would create a number of legendary recurring characters such as Homey D. Clown (Damon Wayans), Fire Marshall Bill (Jim Carrey), and Men on Film (Damon Wayans & David Alan Grier)…

In Living Color (Season 3) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Homey the Sellout: Part 2” which features comedy sketches “Pee Wee’s Adult Adventure,” “Misery II,” and the Homey D. Archangel Metatron – The Supreme Angel of Death, Is Awakening

This is a trance-channelling by Archangel Azrael:- The Angel of Death, through my wife, Jill.

Jill (My wife and Spiritual Avatara) was asking her spiritual guide for some answers on the true meanings of ‘trust’ and ‘truth’. This is what she wrote, which was partly from her spiritual guide and partly from her own thoughts:

Jill: Trust is ‘reliance on’ and ‘confidence in’ the truth. Truth is the quality of being true; genuine; actual. When people put their trust in religion, they’re accepting the religious statements as being ‘the truth’. Yet in reality, religion is merely a concept, or a system of concepts, written, or passed on, by mankind; regarded as representing some aspect of the world or universe.

Why do so many people take these faiths and accept them; without bothering to check whether these faiths are in alignment with their own feelings and thoughts? It’s a scientific fact that no two things can occupy the same space and time; so if you doubt God, then you don’t believe; and to you, God doesn’t exist.

It was interesting watching a Catholic Nun protesting on National T.V. yesterday saying, “If I get to heaven, and if I get to meet God, I’ll… ” Isn’t it strange that a Catholic Nun would say “If”?

Surely a woman who’s giving her life to serving God would believe that she’s already made the ‘goody list’ and will get her VIP ticket to heaven? Does she feel unworthy? Does she feel that heaven might not exist?

How many people have been born and programmed into a religion, without questioning if it’s the ‘right’ religion for them? How many people have taken the time to learn about other religions, to learn about the values and beliefs of others? Until we do; we won’t (in my opinion) find the truth.

It was at this time that spirit interjected Jill’s thoughts and her channelling with her guide, and Archangel Azrael (The Angel of Death) spoke to Jill:

Archangel Azrael: Until you understand your brothers and sisters, you can’t hope to comprehend living in union. You all possess the Divine Spirit. It’s your mission to expand your mental and spiritual horizons, until you can attain the 5 levels of human consciousness. Then, and only then, can you ascend to the next dimension.

The journey of the soul is to absorb information and experiences; and apply it to that particular incarnation (to be of the flesh); to see what works and what doesn’t work for you. Hence why there is so much variety available of religious and non-religious beliefs; yet you all experience the same pain; and still you do not bear each other more compassion.

Instead you eye each other with suspicion, jealousy and hatred.

Archangel Metatron bids you hello. He is watching you both closely and will shortly oversee your journey of evolution.

Jill: Why is Archangel Metatron here?

Archangel Azrael: Metatron is the Supreme Angel of Death and the teacher of all prematurely dead children. And by this we don’t just mean unborn or early born children. This includes children whose lives were cut short one way or another.

(Glenn’s thoughts: This will be why Luciana, one of my four guides, is with me always, and has brought so many children who have passed over, with her, to communicate with me. Luciana is Hispanic for ‘light’ and she is the beacon of light for all children who died a premature death.)

Metatron will help you fulfil your Divine purpose. It is the children we are so concerned with; for their pathways are being blocked in so many ways.

Hence Glenn’s writing. Through his writings, he will be able to touch the hearts of many parents and authorities; which will eventually change our children’s lives now; and those yet to come.

Archangel Metatron can teach you many things, but through the next coming years you will meet many entities, and not just me; that will each bring you lessons. However, it is important at this time, that I stress to you both, the importance of meditation and relaxation. But I talk not of just watching T.V.

There are many things to be done, so we need you to be relaxed, so your energies can attune themselves to the lessons being given. At this time, it is also important to mention your friend and your ‘tester’: Christopher. He will not like being called this, but he has many truths; and also many questions; yet he fails to listen to answers.

He too must trust in God as he would call his spiritual pathway and meditate. For it is only in meditation that we can truly access the soul. He will find his own answers in time. Together you would find them much quicker. Yes?

Now time grows short. We do not intend to take over. We wish to enhance your search for enlightenment and the truth. It does not help you when you drink such good wine. (Azrael is laughing here, whilst Jill is drinking a very large glass of red Shiraz wine.) When I work with you we need a level head. Yes?

Good! All in fun; but remember: too much allows negative energies to be drawn to you. Assalamualaikum!

Jill: What’s that? Spell it for me please. And at that Azrael did; and he left. We had no idea what these letters meant, or even if it was more than one word; that is until we searched it on the ‘net’. Assalamualaikum is a very common Arabic greeting or parting phrase for, “May peace be with you.”

Archangel Azrael laughs at the names and caricatures he has been given by people who don’t know him. He is well aware he is called The Grim Reaper. What we have learned is that Archangel Azrael records all deaths and helps everyone cross over into the spirit world. So that people are unafraid, he tells us he wears a white full-length robe with a white sash, and appears as an old man with long shoulder-length white hair, yet bald on top, having a warm smily face. He tells us he manifests that shape because it is the most friendly, welcoming, non-threatening figure, that people feel safe about when they pass over.

We learnt later that Archangel Azrael works in a grid over Europe and the Middle East. When he talks through Jill, he has an old slightly Germanic accent.

We have learned that all Archangels are apportioned grids over planet Earth to apportion watching over us. For example, Archangel Michael is at Mount Shasta in California, to look over the USA and Archangel Gabriel is over Canada.

Archangel Azrael is one of the oldest Archangels and when Jill channels him through her, he buckles up his body (in Jill) and stoops like a very old man, and his voice sounds very old. Yet… the energy he emits is so warm and friendly and loving.

An Astrological Look at Stephen King’s Natal Chart

Every day, I like to look at celebrity birthdays and post a few on Facebook and Twitter. We all love to look for aspects of ourselves in the personality of a celebrity who shares our birthday, don’t we? Today, September 21st, I happened to note a trend of excellence in thinking and communication skills. Next, I pulled one of my favorite books off the shelf, Love Cards by Robert Camp, and looked up the card for September 21st. Camp assigns a title to each card, which I’ve found to be uncannily accurate in summarizing the personality for each card. I had to chuckle when I saw that September 21st is the three of clubs – the card Camp calls “The Writer’s Card.”

A wildly popular and successful writer who happens to be born today is an excellent example of the three of clubs. In Camp’s Destiny Card system, the threes are highly creative and imaginative and clubs rule communication. Stephen King is truly a king in his chosen field. I must admit that although I am a voracious reader, I have only read a small slice of his prolific literary offerings because his writing makes me bite my nails and sit on the edge of my seat. It can take me a few days to shake off the unease that reading his novels creates in me. When I looked at his birth chart today, many things jumped out at me immediately that made me think, “Oh, of course,” and I’ll share a few with you. So much jumps out to indicate his unique talent and notable career that it is hard to know where to begin!

Writing ability and a fertile imagination that can spin a good story can often be found in a busy third house within the natal chart. The Sun, Venus, and Neptune are all in King’s third house, indicating he takes to writing and enjoys it as naturally as a duck takes to water. Neptune in the third is conjunct Mercury, the planet of communication, in his fourth house of home. The fourth house is also the seat of the soul and the psychological foundation of a person. His Mercury is in Libra, the air sign that contemplates the polarities of self versus other and examines the myriad aspects of human interaction. Venus, Neptune, Mercury are all in Libra, but his Sun is in a late degree of Virgo. The earth influence and detail-oriented nature of a Virgo Sun helps him gather the many thoughts and impressions the Libra influences generate and distill them into a cohesive story. The Libra energy can also help him lead the reader in one direction and then another. Appearances can definitely be deceiving and things aren’t what you think they are is another way of translating King’s Mercury/Neptune conjunction.

Another house to examine for signs of creative ability is the fifth. Here, King’s Moon in adventurous Sagittarius is sextile Mercury. He literally loves to write. Writing is an emotional release for him and possibly more an escape than a work task. His Moon in the fifth also opposes Uranus in the eleventh house of friends and groups. The eleventh house is his audience and Uranus is a planet with electrical and erratic influence. King shocks his audience with his genius ability to generate disturbing emotions as his stories unfold. Some, like myself, may find the emotions his work stirs up to be too uncomfortable. There are other aspects, though, that allow him to be well received and to get away with pushing limits. One of these is the Moon in the fifth trine Saturn/Pluto in dramatic Leo in the first house of self. Saturn rules mortality, longevity, pain, suffering, and sorrow. Some Saturn archetypes are Father Time and The Grim Reaper. Pluto can be power, fear, death and transformation, resurrection, Hades, Hell, all that is dark, disturbing, taboo, hidden and suppressed. Leo rules the fifth house of creativity where King’s Moon sits, so the supportive flow of lunar energy to Saturn/Pluto in the first makes him a dramatic presenter of exciting and disturbing emotions having to do with fear, pain, and death. King also has Jupiter in the fruitful water sign of Scorpio in the fifth, semi-sextile his Sun in the third, indicating his creativity and writing can be prolific and profitable. With Jupiter in square aspect to Saturn/Pluto in the first, success may not have come easily, though. Persistence, persistence, and plain old hard work got him to where he is now. Scorpio rules the metaphysical, paranormal, and supernatural. Another aspect that makes his work appeal to many is King’s Jupiter in Scorpio in the fifth trine Mars in sensitive Cancer in the twelfth house of the subconscious and the collective of society. I suspect King can feel the fear in his body as he creates it in his writing. I wonder – does his hair stand up, does he get goosebumps, must he walk away from his writing and pace a bit before he can return to crafting the perfect words that will make his reader’s skin crawl? He may get some of his ideas from actual nightmares and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn some of his best writing takes place in the wee hours when thoughts naturally turn toward what’s lurking in the closet or under the bed. Mostly, he understands the part of us that likes to be scared and reaches out to that part like a sympathetic good buddy. We must like how Stephen King scares us because we buy a LOT of his books!

To top off his chart, King has the initiative fire sign of Aries on his midheaven. He is a trailblazer in his genre and stands out and above others in his field. I have read novels based solely on the fact that I saw a Stephen King endorsement on the cover. His reputation and fame as a writer are such that he has a following of devoted readers, and deservedly so. Stephen King’s life path as indicated by his Lunar North Node in Taurus in the eleventh house of his natal chart is to bring something material and tangible to the masses. King lacks a strong enough influence in the ninth house of publishing to guarantee his books would make it into print, but his plodding, stubborn Lunar North Node in Taurus combined with his powerfully determined Saturn/Pluto in royal Leo refuses to be ignored. His attitude toward getting his first stories published may well have been, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” His Lunar North Node in Taurus in his eleventh house and his Jupiter in Scorpio in the fifth house are both feminine and fruitful, assisting King in producing a large body of work for his appreciative readers.

Important Message for Baby Boomers, "Don’t Retire Yet … Refocus"

As an early “Baby Boomer” ie, one of those human beings born in the period after World War II and until the early 1960s, I’ve been giving a lot of thought during the last few years about how much longer I will work and what I’ll do after I retire. It could be a dilemma; on the one hand, after 46 years at work, I’ve had enough working for an employer 8am to 5pm every day except Saturday and Sunday. On the other hand, I’m in good health and don’t want to give work away just to spend the remainder of my days pottering about in the garden. So what’s the solution?

First, I’ve changed my mind about the idea of retirement. To me retirement is a dirty word. It means leaving work and hanging around waiting to die. After all, isn’t that what people do? They leave work and after a few years pottering about, die. The certainty of death is very good at creating focus. It’s not that we morbidly focus on it all the time, but that we know it’s getting closer and need to make the most of what time we have left. I’m thinking more and more each day of “refocusing” instead of “retiring”.

My idea in refocusing is to give my employer the flick and then do something I enjoy that will keep me active, alert, and perhaps bring in some supplementary income. Rather than refocus on one activity, which is rather like leaving one job for another, I’m working on diversifying my activities. I believe a balance of perhaps charity work – giving back something to society, running a small Internet business, and some short-term, part-time work will suit me. I want to choose how much time I devote to anything I do.

If you are a Baby Boomer like me, why not think about refocusing instead of retiring?

Here are some suggestions for a balanced refocusing:

Do some gardening: Gardening can be relaxing if you enjoy being outdoors. It also gives a sense of pleasure and achievement seeing a prize rose blossom into a beautiful work of art, sculpted by the hands of an unknown master designer. Your house will look special as your efforts start to pay off. Choose a time of day that is suitable to you to avoid excessive heat or cold, sunburn or being run over by peak hour traffic. Maybe start off with half hour per day and increase it if you want to.

Work for a charity: Find a charitable organisation that suits you and volunteer to deliver books to older people, deliver Meals on Wheels, do some menial tasks about the houses of the elderly, or find someone who’d like you to read to them once or twice per week. This will get you out of your house, away from your spouse (if you have one), and enable you to feel good about helping someone who needs and appreciates your help. Remember that one day you may need someone to help you.

Do some part-time paid work: This need not be in the area in which you have spent your life’s work. If you were a rocket scientist, get a job as a doorman at a hotel or club, you’ll meet hundreds of interesting people and perhaps enjoy the socialisation. If you were a taxi driver, perhaps get a job registering vehicles for a car dealer on a commission basis. Whatever you do, find something you enjoy and do as many or as few hours as you wish or your employer will allow. My Uncle was almost 80 and washed dishes at a Chinese cafe a couple of lunch times per week. A friend is in his mid-sixties and does occasional driving jobs for visiting celebrities. Another in his sixties works one day per week taking bets for a bookmaker.

Work from home: There are literally thousands of jobs you can do from home including earning money on the Internet as an affiliate, drop-shipper or eBay seller. You could run a book exchange or look after the homes of people who are on holidays or out of town. You could walk someone’s dog, water their plants, feed their animals, pick up their dry cleaning. There are really endless opportunities to make money. And if you are doing it more to keep active than to put food on your table, it can be fun.

Research a topic of interest: If you have always wanted to know something about the Norwegian pink-tailed swan, do some research and perhaps put your findings into an ebook for sale on the Internet. Or just enjoy the research and keep your knowledge to yourself.

Take a trip: Among all of your other activities, take time to take a trip somewhere you have always wanted to visit. You don’t have to go for two years, you can go for a few weeks and go more often. Travel provides a good break from your routine and is good for self renewal if you are feeling as if you are in a rut.

Do nothing: That’s right, do nothing for at least part of your week. Sit in a chair and listen to some nice music. Dream some pleasant dreams, read a good book, watch a television show, or simply doze off and have a good rest. Or perhaps have a half bottle of red wine and then doze off, it will be much easier!

Whatever you do, don’t retire and sit around waiting for the Grim Reaper. The more you wait, the quicker he will arrive. Make a decision now to refocus and plan to do a range of tasks that will keep you physically well, mentally healthy, and if possible, add to your income. For all we know, we only have one life … don’t waste a single minute of it.

Make every minute count!

How to Protect Your Electronics From Heat

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In our modern society, we have become very dependent upon our electronic gadgets and appliances. Most households (in the U.S) have Personal Computers with an Internet Connection. If we solely looked at the Personal Computer, we do a lot of thing with this product.

  • We communicate with our friends, family members and business associates.
  • We conduct financial transactions (e.g., buy or sell products on line)
  • We create all kinds of documents (which are very important to our personal and business finances/operations)
  • We store and play music (in the form of *.mp3 files)
  • We (increasingly) store pictures that have sentimental value (and could be tough to replace if lost).

For many people, anytime their “computer dies”, it becomes a major inconvenience in their lives. If you were to look at some other electronic systems that we typically have in our homes, such as

  • DVD Players
  • Gaming Systems (e.g., Playstation, X-Box, Nintendo, Wii, etc.)
  • Audio Entertainment Equipment
  • Video Recording Equipment (for you people that like to post videos on YouTube.
  • Appliances (such as Central Air Conditioning Systems, Heat Pumps, Microwave Ovens, etc.)
  • HDTVs (e.g., LCD or Plasma)

All of these items entertain us, enlighten us and provide us with comfort. These products each require a considerable amount of money to purchase. Further, repairing and/or replacing these products is also quite expensive. Hence, I am quite amazed that people do not do more to protect their investment (in these electronic systems) and do whatever they can to extend the operating life time of these products.

In general, there are three (3) different destructive mechanisms that will either destroy or greatly reduce the operational life-time of your electronics. These three destructive mechanisms are

  • Heat
  • Electrical Surge/Spike Events, and
  • Electrical Noise

In this article, we are going to talk about HEAT. As we discuss Heat, we will cover the following topics.

  • How is Heat destructive to your electronics?
  • What can we do about heat – How to Protect Your Electronics from Heat and Extend the Operating Life of our Electronics?

2.0 HOW IS HEAT DESTRUCTIVE TO YOUR ELECTRONICS

Heat is an artifact of electronics. All electronic systems generate heat. Electronic systems accept electrical power (current and voltage) from the power line (via the electrical outlet). The electronic system uses a portion of this electrical power to perform work (e.g., the function that you want it to perform, e.g., play a DVD, cook a bag of popcorn, etc). The remaining portion of this electrical power is converted into heat.

However, heat is also an enemy of electronic systems. Few things are more effective in reducing the operating life-time of an electronic system, than raising the operating temperature of the electronic circuitry within your electronic system. If you were to speak with an Electronics Device Reliability expert, he/she would tell you that for every 10 degrees (Celsius) that you raise the operating temperature of an electrical device; you reduce the operating lifetime of that device by 50%. The impact of heat (in shortening the operating life) of your electronics is “huge”.

3.0 WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT HEAT?

As I mentioned earlier, all electronics generates heat. There is no way to prevent electronics from generating the very thing that can destroy it. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to prevent this heat from doing so much damage.

1. You can work to remove this heat from the electronics (as quickly as it generates it), or

2. You can do things to try to help the electronics to not generate so much heat in the first place.

I will address each of these approaches below.

3.1. REMOVING HEAT FROM THE ELECTRONICS

Many consumer electronic systems were designed with “Heat Removal” in mind. Some of these electronic systems (like desktop computers) contain “internal fans”. These fans were designed into these systems so that they could blow air through the area in which the system electronics resides. The intent behind having these fans to is blow the heat away from these electronics and to help keep them cool.

Other electronic systems contain “vents” (in their outer case) to provide an “escape path” for heat. Many of these vents are located at the top or in the “back-end” of the electrical system. On this basis, I have the following recommendations to permit the removal of heat from your electronics.

Make sure and keep papers, books, dust and other items from “blocking” the vents of these systems.

Leaving these items on top of your (DVD Player for example) will block the vents, and will not allow for heat to escape from your DVD Player. This will cause the temperature (surrounding the electronics) within your DVD player to rise; which will (in-turn) reduce the operating lifetime of your DVD player.

Make sure that the “back-end” of the electronic system is not “butt-up” against the wall or an entertainment cabinet.

It is important to make sure that there is sufficient air/ventilation space between the vents (in the back end) and the wall/cabinet to allow for Heat Removal.

Make sure and have your appliances (like your Central Air Conditioning system or Heat Pump) serviced.

Whenever these appliances are serviced, the service professional will do various things (like clean out dust and debris from ventilation path), therefore maintaining an unobstructed path for heat to escape from these systems.

Make sure that the fan (inside some of your systems) is working.

If this fan stops working, then you need to get it repaired quickly. Failure to do this will result in your electronic system having an early meeting with the “grim reaper” or an electronic waste disposal site.

3.2 REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF HEAT THAT THE ELECTRONICS GENERATE IN THE FIRST PLACE

Another approach to protecting your electronics from heat is to take steps to try to prevent your electronics from generating excessive heat in the first place. The amount of heat that is generated within an electronic system is often referred to as being related to the following expression for resistive loss: I^2XR, where:

  • I represents the amount of current flowing through an electronic system and
  • R represents the load impedance (or resistance) within this electronic system; and
  • I^2 denotes ” I being raised to the 2nd Power, or “I-squared”

From this mathematical expression, you can see that if we were able to reduce the amount of current flowing through an electrical system, this would certainly help to reduce the amount of heat generated within this electrical system.

QUESTION: How can you reduce the current that an electrical system uses? Doesn’t it require a certain amount of current to do its job? The answer to this question is “Yes”, an electrical system does require a certain amount of current and voltage (electrical power) to do its job. However, it doesn’t need to use anymore current than that. Hence, we recommend that you use TVSS (Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors) components in order to reduce the current level (flowing into your electrical system).

Now, I know that some of you may be “scratching your heads” and wondering, “How in the world will this reduce the amount of current flowing into my electronic system” and (in turn reduce the amount of heat that it generates)? The answer is this: Anytime there is a large amount of electrical noise or spikes, or other forms of distortion in the electrical voltage and current in the power line, this also results in the flow of additional current into your electrical system. By using the TVSS components, you are eliminating this excessive current (due to noise, glitches, etc.) from the “power line” current, flowing into your electronic system.

In this case, you have now accomplished the following:

1. You have decreased the amount of current flowing into your electronic system, (which is the “I” in the expression “I^2 X R”) – which helps a lot to reduce the amount of heat that the system generates.

2. By reducing the heat that the electrical system generates, you are now lowering the ambient (or surrounding) temperature in which your electronics operates.

3. Lowering the ambient temperature will often times also reduce the load impedance/resistance in your electronic system (e.g., the “R” in this expression) as well.

QUESTION: How can you reduce the load impedance/resistance in an electronic system? Isn’t that a design feature of the electronic system? The answer to this question is “Yes it is”. You cannot change the load impedance/resistance by very much. But, the reason why lowering the ambient temperature will also reduce the load impedance/resistance is that many resistors have (what is called) a positive temperature coefficient. This means that as the ambient temperature goes up, does the resistor value of this particular resistor.

However, the converse is also true. If you were to lower the ambient (or surrounding) temperature, then you would also lower the resistor value as well.

SO LET’S RECAP THE BENEFITS OF USING TVSS COMPONENTS:

  • Using TVSS components lower the amount of current flowing through your electronic system.
  • Lowering this current reduces the amount of heat that the electronic system generates.
  • This lowers the ambient temperature for the system electronics.
  • Lowering the ambient temperature also lowers the load impedance/resistance (R) within the electronic system.

Both the reduction of current (and the resulting reduction of the load impedance) would serve to significantly reduce the amount of heat that the electronics system will generates.

5.0 CONCLUSIONS

In this article, we spoke about “heat” and how effective it is in reducing the operating life-time of your electronics. Heat is one of the three (3) destructive mechanisms that will either destroy or shorten the operational life-time of your electronics. The remaining two mechanisms are

  • Electrical Surge/Spike Events, and
  • Electrical Noise

We have also described some guidelines on how to protect your electronics from heat, and to extend the operating life-time of your electronics. In particular, we mentioned the following approaches:

1. Use (and do not thwart) the “Heat Removal” features of your electronic systems

  • Make sure that Internal Fans are working and
  • Make sure that vents are not blocks and that there is plenty of air space around the Electronic system to allow for the escape of heat.

Most films use patterns or specific objects as metaphors for a concept that the filmmaker is trying to convey. In horror movies, many such objects are used to intensify mood, identify character traits, emphasize themes and concepts (eg good vs. evil), and foreshadow events. Objects can be powerful symbols that add depth and meaning to a story.

Horror films try to capture our worst nightmares. As Carl G. Jung observed in his book Man and His Symbols (1979): "Commonplace objects or ideas can assume such powerful psychic significance in a dream that we may awake seriously disturbed, in spite of having dreamed of nothing worse than a locked room or a missed train "and" As a general rule, the unconscious aspect of any event is revealed to us in dreams, where it appears not as a rational thought but as a symbolic image. "

Some of the most common symbolic objects found in horror include:

1. Religious Symbols – Religion is very prevalent in horror, with themes of life and death, spirituality, man playing god, man fighting inner and outer demons, good versus evil, and so forth. Religious artifacts may be Christian, occult, satanic, voodoo, or about any other type of belief in something greater than humanity. In The Skeleton Key (2005), hospice worker Caroline Ellis is a skeptic and does not believe in the supernatural, even though hoodoo items and legends surround her in the swampy, primitive homestead where she cares for an elderly man, Ben. As Ben believes in the hoodoo magic, Caroline pieces together more and more about the lynching of a slave couple who performed hoodoo in the attic, and her belief system begins to shift. She learns about the jujus – spell-books and recorded conjurations she discovers in the attic – and begins to perform rituals herself. In the end, her fear makes her a believer and this is her downfall, as it is what the slaves, who have lived on in the bodies of others, needed to take over her body. She let the symbolic objects overpower her reasoning.

2. Symbols of Death – Death is naturally pervasive in horror and there are countless representative objects, such as coffins, gravestones, skeletons, angels of death, and so forth. In Psycho (1960), the taxidermy birds are representative of the dead mother in the home and Bates' s chizophrenic attempts to keep her alive after death. In horror, there can be confusion between life and death, such as ghosts, zombies, and the supernatural, so objects can help symbolize who is on which side. Toward the beginning of Jacob's Ladder (1990), Jacob gets trapped in an underground tunnel, which is symbolic of being trapped between life and death. The rushing train which barely misses him on the track is filled with disfigured faces, lost souls like him. As he suffers increasing hallucinations and his life spins out of control, the only comfort he finds is with his chiropractor Louis, who he describes as an overgrown cherub. We later discover he is in fact an angel. Louis tells Jacob the truth about his situation, though Jacob cannot comprehend its real meaning at the time. The fire that Jacob ignites at an Army headquarters (Jacob believes the hallucination were from army experiments) represents his need to burn away his attachments and memories of life. Fire symbolically recurs many times in the film and Jacob is literally consumed by it before being able to finally leave his hellish purgatory.

3. Colors – Many films use color to symbolize themes and the powers of good and evil. Red is often associated with evil, blood, lust, and violence, for example the Red Queen in Resident Evil (2002). Black is also naturally associated with evil while light, neutral colors or earth tones are associated with good or the general populace.

4. Light – Light can symbolize many things, such as hope, transition, escape, and even death (eg Poltergeist's "Don't go into the light!") Sunlight normally provides a sense of comfort so the incongruity of sunlight and horror can be especially unnerving, such as in the famous graveyard scene in Night of the Living Dead (1968). Candles, lanterns, and flashlights are common sources of light in horror, as this light can only be cast so far while the surrounding darkness is rife with shadows. In this early scene from Hellraiser (1987) the dangling light bulbs in the torture room instantly sets the tone.

INT. TORTURE ROOM NIGHT

The bare bulbs in the room we've entered swing violently, disorienting us. There are chains – dozens of them – disappearing with the darkness of the ceiling: all are swinging back and forth. Some end in hooks, with pieces of skin and sinew adhering; some are serrated, others simply drip blood.

In the claustrophobic British horror film The Descent (2005), a group of female friends on a caving expedition become hunted by inhuman creatures. The women are trapped in virtual darkness underground and light is their only friend as the creatures are blind. Light and dark are often used thematically to represent good and evil, hence the horror of the night and the hope of a new dawn if you have managed to survive.

5. Weapons – A majority of horror films involve the use of weapons, from machine guns to saws. Weapons have phallic symbolism that suggests masculine power and the woman that outsmarts the villain essentially castrates him. Leatherface's weapon in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is the ultimate phallic symbol of raging power. Weapons are most symbolically powerful when they reflect character; Leatherface lives on and on for this very reason.

6. Fabric – Fabric appears in many forms in horror, such as drapes, tapestries, and furniture dust coverings. Because fabric can disguise, it intensifies suspense as it suggests the presence of something behind it. The protagonist can also hide behind fabric, but of course is not protected by it. In The Others (2001), the mother hears voices in the home and enters a room where all the stored items are covered with dust cloths. As the voices intensify, she begins pulling down the cloths to try to reveal the source. In this film, fabric is used as a metaphor for covering the dark truth the mother refuses to accept, that she murdered her own children. The curtains that are always closed in the home also emphasize this. Once the mother accepts the truth, there is no need for curtains and they can live in the light.

7. Keys / Locks – Keys and locks symbolize secrets, confinement, and hidden objects or places. In The Skeleton Key, Caroline is trying to solve her patient Ben's paralyzed condition. Her skeleton key works in every room in the house except one in the attic. She manages to get inside the room and discovers a host of disturbing secrets that will lead to her own demise. In The Others, the mother must constantly lock and unlock doors to prevent light from reaching her children who have a rare condition and will die if exposed to sunlight. In this film, the keys and locks represent her confined thinking as well as her physical confinement in purgatory. Only when she accepts the truth can all the doors be left unlocked, as the curtains can come down.

8. Doors and Windows – Doors and windows (or any portal) have many symbolic meanings. Often, they help symbolize characterization. With windows, a person has a limited perspective and is like a spectator, not part of the outside world. The person looking through the window may be frightened of the world outside or physically unable to be part of it. In The Others, the mother is often by the window looking out, trapped in her home because of her children and a dense, pervasive fog. At the end, she and her children stand by the window looking out at a world they no longer belong to. On the other hand, doors can be symbolic of opportunity. In horror, however, doors and windows are typically a means of entrapment or escape. They are also highly utilized for building suspense … is something behind the slightly open door or lurking outside the window in the dark? In Night of the Living Dead, doors and windows are dangerous openings that the zombies can infiltrate, despite efforts to block them up. Some of the most frightening scenes are when zombie hands reach in through spaces between the wooden boards. Windows can also personify a haunted house as eyes, such as the always glowing, quarter-round windows in Amityville Horror.

9. Labyrinths / Mazes – Mazes and labyrinths have often appeared in horror to heighten the protagonist's lack of control. From the hedge maze in The Shining to the complex labyrinth of the underground Hive in Resident Evil, they offer many opportunities for sudden surprises around the corner, trap doors, circular action, and a sense of improbability for escape.

10. Dolls – Dolls have appeared often in horror storytelling. The incongruity of a child's toy and danger can make it unnerving, as dolls normally represent happiness, innocence, and nurturing. Yet their distorted human qualities, such as oversized heads, unblinking eyes or exaggerated features, can make them especially eerie. Doll appearances can be subtle, such as the marionette in The Others. The doll on a string represents a figure that is not in control of its movements or destiny, much like the mother despite her efforts. It is also a moment when she shockingly connects to 'the other side' and her lifelong definitions of reality are completely rattled. Dolls can also take a leading role, such as in the evil Chucky series. The same unnerving effect has been used with clowns, though they have been so overused as to have lost much of their effect. Dolls, on the other hand, come in so many forms, from voodoo to Barbie dolls and battered antique to contemporary ones, that they offer vast opportunities for symbolic use. A doll's symbolism, which may be expressed through children's play or other means, might include sexuality, lack of control, death, desire, regret, families, aging, and much more.

11. Masks – from the Phantom of the Opera to slasher classics, masks are most often used to disguise evil. Masks are devoid of movement, except for the eyes that peer through them, which makes them like doll faces. In The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Leatherface wears three different masks (made from human skin) that reflect his mood or victim. And who will ever forget hockey-masked Jason or white-faced Michael Myers? On occasion, the villain behind the mask may be a woman. The Japanese film, Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman (2007), is based on an urban legend that claims a suburban town was terrorized by the spirit of a woman whose beautiful face had been horribly disfigured. She would roam the streets wearing a long coat and surgical mask. She would approach her young victims and, while removing the mask, ask them if she was pretty. Their response would inevitably lead to a violent demise.

12. Mirrors – Mirrors, or a mirror effect such as reflections in glass or water, can have many symbolic meanings though typically represent the multiple dualities of characters. Broken mirrors have obvious connotations of shattered lives and personalities. Mirrors can also represent voyeuristic, vanity, and sexual themes – we display our bodies and beautify ours faces in front of them in private. Mirrors can also reflect dangers. The following scene from Halloween: H20 (1998) is a good example of how effective this can be as a sudden scare tactic:

Linda swipes her palm across the fogged-up mirror, wiping away the steam … ON the MIRROR. In its reflection we see Molly and Linda … then – THE SHAPE appears from the cloud of steam behind them!

The mirror has been the subject of many films, including Alexandre Aja's 2008 film Mirrors, which is based on the 2003 Korean film Into the Mirror. In these films, the mirror is a gateway between good and evil, its symbolism similar to doors, gates, and windows.

13. Rope – Rope has many symbolic meanings, from bondage, flogging, and death (the noose) to a means of escape or survival. In horror, ropes are most often used as a form of bondage. This symbolism has been used since the dawn of cinema and has symbolic importance today. In the opening of James Whale's Frankenstein (1931), one of the first shots is a pair of hands pulling on a rope; hands lowering a coffin before grave robbers Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant pull it back up in front of a statue of the Grim Reaper. Later in the opening sequence, they cut a condemned man down from the rope of a gallows but are disappointed that they will need a different brain as his neck was severed.

Symbolism can be very powerful and is an important tool for enhancing theme and character. Everyday objects can be used to effectively alter mood. Even a paper doll can be salaciously scary if in the right hands!

Can The Generation That Invented The "Youth Culture," Ever Give It Up?

Hey fellow ‘Baby Boomers’ have you taken a look at the calendar lately and then a quick glance in the mirror at … you?

I did the other day and I don’t recommend it.

All I could think of was, “Who is that old guy with the grey hair and who looks like he swallowed a basketball?”

I could go on, but I won’t. Way too painful.

Tell me, where was it written back in 1967 when my hair was long and curly and … brown, and my stomach was as flat as the concert field where I went to see the Rolling Stones, that this gig that I had signed on for that we call life, also included a hidden catch that we were going to get … older.

Was there some sinister metaphysical deal or ‘Faustian’ contract that I unwittingly signed all those decades ago? That fine print that I obviously blew by in my rush to plunge headfirst into all the best that inexhaustible youth had to offer. Don’t you think that I have a great case for one of those lawyers you see advertising on TV? You know, the ones who say, “if you’ve been injured in an accident …” Well I have! Run over. Smacked flatter than a pancake by that run-away 18-wheeler Semi called – aging.

I mean I don’t want to sound like sour grapes after having cashed in many years carefree romps with my younger self, but haven’t I, me – you, we – all been a victim of the cruelest kind of ‘bait and switch’? Assuming as we did for all these years that just because we acted like teenagers, we’d look like one – forever! Well come-on, it seems to have worked for the Rolling Stones.

And come to think of it Mick Jagger doesn’t look too bad for a sexagenarian. Nor does Keith Richards for someone who was embalmed three or four decades ago.

Oh all right – yes the ‘sour grapes’ are kicking in again. But I mean really … Yes, I drank way too much and Yes, I partied way too hard, but really – put next to the Stones – I was a ‘freaking’ choir boy! So how come they look OK (well outside of Keith Richards internment and subsequent mummification back in the 70’s) and I look like 40 miles of bad road?

All right. This time I promise – no more self-flagellating, aging ungracefully, self-pity. Even if I am pouting and mentally giving the ‘bird’ to every attractive, youth oozing twenty-something I see.

For all of my fellow Boomers who haven’t yet achieved that dubious distinction – crossing over the Sixty mark is about as much fun as the first time you ever went to a chug-a-lug contest and awoke the next morning to a hangover and asking yourself the age old question… “Did I really do that?”

No – I take that back. At least with the youthful hangover, you knew that by the time the sun went down you’d be ready to party again. With aging, you’re not gonna be ready for anything by nightfall except for maybe a little Jay Leno and falling asleep in the Lazy Boy.

Arrrrrugh !!!

OK ….. That’s it – no more feeling sorry for myself !

I have read that 60 is the new 40. And 40 is the new 20. And … (hey, if this keeps up I’m gonna have to start buying Clearasil again).

But recent unpleasant birthday angst aside, I am beginning to see a trend as the generation that indelibly stamped youth onto not only our, but the collective consciousness of the world, approaches their fifties and sixties.

From where I sit (poised on the edge of my ‘Lazy Boy’) it does not appear that we have any intention of going ‘gently into that good night.’

In fact I’m willing to make a bet here and now that the Boomers are going to make history yet again by becoming the first generation ever to ‘flip off’ the Grim Reaper and make a serious stab at staying young … Forever !

Don’t laugh – I think we just may do it. Come on, wouldn’t you like to show all those teachers and parents and every well meaning adult who ever warned us, “just wait until you turn sixty – or fifty – forty. Then you’ll be sorry that you … (you can fill in your own blank here).

But are we? Sorry I mean. – that we burned that candle at both ends. And maybe got our fingers singed along the way?

Yeah, there might be a few things you’d change, but all in all would you really want to trade in all those fun, wild times for a fully functioning liver and a good set of eardrums that haven’t been blasted out by too much music played way too loud (just like mama warned). Would you?

Nah. I didn’t think so. Me neither.

And buck up guys. I was watching good old Jay Leno the other night between popping my pills for high blood pressure and a bad back. (yeah, too many cheese dogs and nights spent sleeping in a VW Microbus) and he had on two great icons from our generation, Dianne Keaton and Sally Fields.

Wow – Woody Allen’s sweet, cute, ditzy chick (no pun intended for the Dixie Chicks) and the girl who played both Gidget and the Flying Nun! I mean how cool is that!

And you know what? They both looked damn good!

And hey – what with all that we know about nutritious diets, exercise, tossing away the smokes, cutting out the booze and ‘other substances’ (well at least cutting down on them) and our generations answering to sagging libidos – Viagra – well who knows; we just might make it…. Forever!

Weight Loss Pros & Cons – Mostly Cons

Why so many are taken in by weight loss promises.

Desperation, frustration, anxiety over health etc, lots of normal human reasons, but these reasons can render you vulnerable to dodgy products. Don’t despair, there is a real solution. How many advertisements have you seen for weight loss? The special exercise device that promises amazing results- Big Lie. If you read the small print, you will see it needs to be used in conjunction with a 800 a day calorie diet.

Of course you lose weight, its called starvation, loss of muscle mass, completely unsafe and unsustainable. What about the magic diet pills that work wonders according to the testimonials? Most of these pills do one of two things.

1. They block fat absorption in the small intestine. In theory this is OK, but! They also block the essential fatty acids; they are called essential because we need them to sustain life. They also block fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, D, E & K. Again life sustaining nutrients.

2. They are said to burn fat fast, blast the fat off! What they refer to is trying to increase your metabolic rate, i.e. they speed at which your liver processes fats.

Again this is OK in theory, but! The process of stimulating liver function is not fast, nor is it simple, and is very much dependent on the state of toxicity in the gut and the cells, and the extra cellular matrix, i.e. the space between cells.

Exercise, increases your metabolism, but you have to be patient, as it can take up to 8 -12 weeks before this metabolic change occurs. So don’t give up too quickly. Most people quit before they reap the rewards of their exercise.

I can eat what ever I like and still lose weight. Lose all the weight you want without exercise. 2 more great big lies.

Think about for just a few minutes, and you will realize the folly of these stupid claims.

What about the amazing herbal teas. Maybe they have some validity, but most only remain on the market for the duration of an advertising blitz, and a couple of famous conmen have been jailed over their weight loss tea scams.

But you say, all those people who have lost weight, it must be true, I saw it on TV.

Some years ago I attended a marketing boot camp as I wanted to learn how best to promote a health programme. On stage I was told I should get a TV celebrity to endorse it.

I was naive and said I did not know any. The panel laughed and said .You don’t need to know them, you just buy them! A few thousand for a faded star and many thousands for a current star, depending on pulling power.

I was shocked, and felt it would be dishonest to have someone promote my programme who had not benefited from it. It was obvious to all I was never going to make it big in that game!!

Expensive protein drinks as meal replacements. Firstly they should not be expensive; these amino acids are not expensive additives. They are mostly soy or whey protein.

Secondly I do see an important role for these drinks, as a means of preventing muscle loss, during weight loss. But remember if you rely on these for more than one meal per day, what will happen when you stop taking them.

A good routine is a shake for breakfast, a light healthy lunch, shake in the afternoon, too keep your energy up and prevent the late afternoon low blood sugar, eating blitz, and another light healthy meal for dinner. You can replace a shake with a protein bar if you are out and about.

The best time for a protein bar is when you are tempted to buy a chocolate or some cake with coffee. When travelling I find it best to have the bar before I arrive at the gas station, so that I’m not hungry, and therefore won’t buy junk food.

My last beef is no sugar diet food. Bottom line is, it doesn’t work, it has been shown to cause food cravings, and above all else it is toxic to your health. Sugar alternatives have historically proven to be a hazard for health. This dose not include the natural plant derived sweeteners.

After all that I feel like the grim reaper of weight loss!

OK, so enough of the negative stuff! So what does work? Firstly detox your liver and digestion. This is important stuff. Next, you have to exercise, it may not be what you want to hear, but it is essential. You must eat fewer carbohydrates, and increase protein, with reduced fat. Not rocket science but it’s true.

Certain supplements are important, such as a good quality multi, to ensure good nutrition, a quality omega 3 fish oil supplement and then some of the metabolism boosters, which may include:

Ginger, green coffee bean, green tea, L Carotene, Conjugated Linoleic acid, which comes from coconut oil, which by the way is important for weight loss.

Most importantly is the right mental attitude.

Have fun don’t stress over your weight, but do take as many positive actions as possible.
