Is the New Period Stopping Pill Safe Enough to Prevent Acne & Pregnancies?

No tampons, no super-sized maxi pads, no cramps… Any Pamprin-pressed woman could rant off endless positives of a period-stopping birth control pill. But is this new menstruation vanishing drug safe and can it still provide acne protection?

What is “period-stopping”

Well, first the period ending contraceptive called Lybrel does not actually stop the period. As the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals points out, birth control induced period stopping is really “menstrual suppression”. The body’s response to the seven day absence of birth control hormones after the typical 21-day birth control cycle triggers withdrawal bleeding, not a true period.

Regardless of what it’s called, this week’s Food and Drug Administration approval of the period skipping contraceptive spawned enough unanswered questions about safeness to fill a month of morning talk shows.

Lybrel

Period suppressing Lybrel comes in a 28 day-pill pack. The pills contain 90 micrograms of a progestin, levonorgestrel, and 20 micrograms of an estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. These active ingredients are similar to and work like other FDA approved contraceptives. Except, you skip the placebos.

Levonorgestrel stops the body’s monthly release of an egg from the ovary and thickens cervical mucus which makes it harder for sperm to fertilize an egg.

Lybrel and acne control

Yet, ironically, possible side-effects of levonorgestrel include oily skin and acne. If you do experience acne while using an contraceptive containing levonorgestrel, inform your doctor, because commonly prescribed acne antibiotics like tetracycline can make levonorgestrel less effective.

Further study on menstrual suppression needed

While the words “stop your period” may sound melodious to millions of women, to University of New Hampshire professor of the sociology of gender and medical sociology

Jean Elson, they sound more like the prelude to a horror movie.

Elson feels, “Employing hormones to curtail normal menstruation strikes me as a very odd mix of feminism and medical authority – women are offered the opportunity to control their own bodies, but what are the real implications?”

Moreover, Elson finds that menstruation has transformed from a biological issue into a social matter and proposes that women, “… might not find their periods so inconvenient if schools and workplaces provided opportunities for people to rest.”

Like Elson, Margaret Freda a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, has doubts about menstrual suppression.

This past August, Freda told the American Journal of Nursing, “The jury is still out on total menstrual suppression,” until long-term studies of its safety are done.

A study published in Contraception tested the safeness of continuous daily usage of Lybrel on over 2,000 healthy women who had normal menstrual cycles. Among the participants, Lybrel side-effects were comparable to those reported for 21-days on and 7-days off oral contraceptive regimens.

However, Dr. Camelia Davtyan, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, did notice one problem with the study. Davtyan told HealthDay News that, “… the rate of uterine bleeding-related complications is quite high.”

Granted some woman have practiced menstrual suppression for years, it could take five to twenty years before medical studies ultimately concur on the overall safeness of this practice. In the meantime, women will once again need to rely on their intuition and personal health needs to decide what is the best way to prevent pimples and pregnancies.

What Is Acne? Management and Treatment of Acne

Acne, for some people, is something that can be a lifelong battle, long after the teenage years have gone by. If you are someone who is plagued by acne, especially in your adult years, rest assured that you are not alone. Did you know that acne affects over 70 million people and 90% of all teens? It is one of the most common skin problems, that is an on-going condition, characterized by periodic flare-ups. There really is no “cure” for acne. The trick is to learn to “control” it. What is acne? There are three main types of acne, usually fueled by the P. Acnes bacteria:

  • Comedenal Acne: low bacterial activity, mostly plugged pores, often seen as small bumps under the skin
  • Papulopustular Acne: more bacterial activity with pimples, often with a whitehead and red surrounding the pimple area.
  • Cystic Acne: higher bacterial activity, with large bumps (like a marble under the skin) with or without whiteheads, and may be a systemic problem (meaning that treatment may be more than just topical).

Technically speaking, this is what causes acne: Often hormonally-related, acne occurs when there is an increase in the sebum or oil production in the face (also can affect the chest and back). The pore becomes obstructed and the P. Acnes bacteria begins to grow in the sebum. When the sebum escapes into the surrounding skin, inflammation occurs and that is how your pimple is formed. When treating acne there are three overall goals:

  • Prevention: Keeping the pores open through exfoliation and retinoids helps the skin function better. At-home exfoliating products and retinoids both promote skin turnover. Periodic professional exfoliating treatments also help to expedite cell turnover of the top layers of the skin.
  • Minimize Inflammation: Using a low-percentage of salicyclic acid on a regular basis helps to liquefy the sebum and can keep inflammation at bay.
  • Scar Prevention: Keeping acne under control is important to help prevent scarring and pitting that remains long after acne is gone.
  • Acne Treatment Tips
  • Keep the skin clean with good hygiene. Wash the face twice daily – any more than that may strip the skin and cause extra sebum production – with a gentle face wash, especially if you are using other products like salicyclic acid or retinoids.
  • Leave the pimple alone. Resist “picking” or “popping” any pimples. This actually may increase the life of the pimple, may make it redder or larger and/or increase the chance of scarring.
  • Use of mineral make-up is highly recommended over oil-based cosmetics. Many store make-up brands are petroleum based, which is similar to putting putty in your pores, clogging your pores over time.
  • Don’t sleep with make-up on!
  • Foods with a high iodine content (salty foods) tends to foster breakouts. Eat a “good diet” with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Learn to manage your stress. Outbreaks can definitely be stress (and hormone) related.

As mentioned earlier, there is no cure for acne. But there are effective treatments that can help to keep you in control of your acne. Below are general suggestions about how to treat acne, however please note that treatment varies depending on the specific case and getting a professional opinion on how to best manage your acne is recommended.

  • Retinoids, at-home exfoliants and amino fruit acids can be used astopical acne treatments.
  • Glycolic acid tends to be a very popular product promoted for acne-prone skin, but it can be one of the most irritating alpha hydroxy acids. Mandelic acid is not only less irritating but has an anti-bacterial function to decrease the P. Acnes bacteria.

The Western Diet – Get Off It Now

Thanks to the large population of the United States (I am one of these people that was born and is currently living here) the industrial revolution is wreaking havoc on millions of people every year. Processed foods and foods that are not grown organically are basically a disgrace to this country.

Injecting cows with growth hormones, antibiotics and more is producing more food. I understand that. But, this food is what contributes to the various diseases. Acne is one of them. Food that is not grown organically is less nutritious and some recognize it as being fake, or not true food. Stuffing chickens inside cages without any room to move around is flat out wrong.

Do not get me wrong here… I love chicken. I am a big eater of chicken and there eggs. But, only organically, free-range raised chicken. I now only buy eggs that are truly pastured. Eggs where the hens are free to roam around on large grass field farms, eating healthy grass and thus providing us with much more nutritious and cleaner protein and fat. And, 100% grass-fed beef is healthier, tastier, and more pleasant compared to conventionally raised beef.

Then their is processed foods. In fact, it is not food. Corn dogs, pizza, TV dinners (what a joke), cookies, pancake mixes, bread, and thousands of other food like substances is harmful to your health. You need to avoid processed foods starting today. Do it for your health!

This western diet causes rapid blood sugar fluctuations, hormone imbalances, liver problems, constipation, and a host of other problems. All leading to acne and other diseases that we created ourselves.

Okay… So What Should You Eat?

Food.

I recommend going back to how we first ate when we arrived on Earth. We were hunters and gathers. We ate loads of vegetables, fruits, animal foods, and nuts and seeds. It was all wild picked and naturally grown. To me, a paleo based diet, also known as primal, caveman, etc. makes the most sense as that is how we adapted.

Also, there was not much cooking back in the day. This is where a raw food diet has its place. I do not believe a 100% raw food diet is feasible for everyone, but eating about 75% raw foods is very ideal. Cook your chicken, beef, lamb, etc. Cook your fish if you wish but mix in some sushi. Eat all fruits raw and eat most of your vegetables raw. If you want them warm with your meal then lightly steam them.

Eat plenty of coconut. Coconut has miraculous healing powers. Hemp seeds are full of vitamins and minerals, are a quality source of protein, have a decent omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acid ratio, are very versatile, and are easy on the wallet when purchased in bulk.

In addition, avoid most, if not all grains. Avoid dairy at all costs as it has an absurd amount of links to acne. If you enjoy grains, then slowly eliminate them from your diet. I recommend avoiding all gluten grains first. I currently enjoy Irish steel cut oats 1-2 times a week. I do not eat any other grains on a regular basis.
