Shopify: The Disadvantages

In the competitive world of Ecommerce, Shopify tends to rank high amongst its competitors. Even so Shopify has its own weakness;

Non-Standard Coding – “liquid” codes. It seems that Shopify is engineered for novice in Ecommerce. If you are a newbie in the world of blogshop, you will definitely benefit much in using Shopify because it is very user friendly and does not have complex processes. The only complex thing with Shopify is its programming language. The platform makes use of “liquid” codes that are used to enhance or modify the appearance of a website. Those who are expert or have competitive knowledge in HTML and CSS would definitely find their skills irrelevant when using Shopify. With this, shop owners (who do not know liquid or do not have time to study liquid codes) will be tamed to the themes that the platform offers.

Lack of Features Shopify seems to lack a number of important features such contact forms, a section intended for recommended products, a section for email products to a friend and saving wish lists. Given this, one would be forced to outsource needed tools or maybe, hire another competent Ecommerce solution provider. When outsourcing tools, communication problems may exist because Shopify uses different program codes.

Release of New Features. Another thing is that Shopify takes some time to release new features. It is fine if the features are not essential but the problem is that they are! This simply reflects that Shopify is a hosted solution. While waiting for their latest feature to be released, you will be forced to move around the small options that the platform provide. You cannot do extreme modifications such as purchasing a cart system and installing it on your own. Worst is that Shopify do not inform their clients for the upcoming tools or features that they will be releasing. It is somewhat frustrating for their users to wait and be stucked up on their closed system. Maybe, in some ways, it would be more acceptable if Shopify evolves to be an open source Ecommerce solution.

Costly. When talking about price, platform problems aside, Shopify seems to be very expensive. Aside from the monthly plan that the users should pay, Shopify also asks for a transaction fee that is highly dependent on the monthly sales of its users (1%-2% from the monthly sale). So, the more sales, the higher the monthly bill would be. This policy is revoked when using the “Unlimited” plan- which is also pricey.
